A really fun episode to put together this week! First we visit Chicago, Illinois, what a great town! I love that place and don't get there nearly often enough. We learn a bit about history and culture of Chicago. Then, we hear about how one person used social media to have a positive affect on one person's life--probably even saving her life. I'm a sucker for a good movie monster, and we look at what the website Vulture calls the best of all time. Perfectly fitting for Halloween. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed putting it together! If you'd like to support the Rick's Rambles podcast, the best thing you can do this week is simply share it on your own social media, and let folks know what you are listening to! I appreciate you taking the time to listen, and we'll see you next week! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ricksrambles/message
CLICK LINK FOR YOUR OWN COPY Historical accounts of the undead who returned from the grave to drink human blood! From the cobblestone streets of medieval Europe, across the vastness of Asia and the jungles of Africa, to the haunted forests of New England in the 20th century, the author brings his researches to life in over fifty narratives and case histories. Have you ever wondered whether or not vampires actually exist? Whether they are merely folk tales or real creatures that walk the same world we do? Donald F. Glut's classic survey of the historical record provides food for thought and fascinating insights into the sanguinary world of True Vampires of History. Donald F. Glut is a world-recognized authority on monsters. His books The Dinosaur Dictionary and Dinosaurs: The Encyclopedia were included by the American Library Association in their lists of best reference books of the year. And his The Dracula Book and The Frankenstein Catalog were both recipients of the annual Ann Radcliffe Award from the Count Dracula Society. In addition to hundreds of articles on monsters real and fictive, Glut's other books include Classic Movie Monsters, Jurassic Classics: A Collection of Saurian Essays and Mesozoic Musings, The Frankenstein Legend, True Vampires of History, and True Werewolves of History. He has also written three vampire novels, directed and executive-produced three feature-length movies featuring Dracula and regularly writes stories for Vampiress Carmilla magazine. He is probably best known for his novelization of the movie The Empire Strikes Back.

Here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year: Bad TV Couples, Classic Movie Monsters, and the Perfect Summer Soundtrack. First up, from Episode 384: we’re discussing bad TV couples. Anyone who loves television has a favorite couple, or even several favorites. But have you ever loved a show and two characters getting together just ruined it for you? Are there shows where you just dread any potential romantic couplings – like it just doesn’t belong? We will be discussing all of this and giving our top 3 worst TV couples we’ve experienced. Next, we head to Episode 386: we’re discussing those movie monster classics such as Mummy (1932), Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Dracula, Invisible Man, Creature of the Black Lagoon, etc. These classic horror movies are the beginning drivers for what we know horror movies and horror characters to be today and their visionary masters still reside in the horror hall of fame. We decided – with the upcoming release of The Invisible Man – we need to discuss these classic monsters: how they scared us, our favorites, and why we love them despite being less of a razzle-dazzle than horror movies now. Finally, we head to Episode 395: What are the best songs or themes from movies to crank up once Summer hits? Instead of dwelling on it all, let’s just make our perfect playlist. We each get 10 songs – they can be themes, songs from a movie soundtrack, or just synonymous with a movie – and make our own perfect summer movie soundtrack! That means you could see yourself, windows down, hair flowing, driving or jogging or whatever to our Spotify playlist, The Hollywood Outsider Perfect Summer Movie Soundtrack. Bonus points if you know the chorus… Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast: (0:00 – 33:47) Opening | Bad TV Couples (33:48 – 59:54) Classic Movie Monsters (59:55 – 1:42:42) The Perfect Summer Movie Soundtrack Please support The Hollywood Outsider and gain immediate access to exclusive bonus content, including a BONUS monthly episode and Bad Movie Night, by visiting Patreon.com/ TheHollywoodOutsider Be sure to join our Facebook Group Join our Fantasy Movie League! Derek attended the 2014 World Horror Convention in Portland, Oregon, last weekend. The convention was a horror writer's paradise, and Derek spoke with fellow podcaster Desmond Reddick (from the Dread Media podcast) about his experiences at the convention, and even plays a round of the MKR Classic Five. While most of the panels and content at the WHC were focused on current horror fiction, but Monster Kid Radio listeners would still have found something to do at the convention as one of the special guests was Victoria Price, the daughter of the legendary . Not only did she deliver an amazing presentation about her father (which listeners will hear in Episode #98 of Monster Kid Radio), but she chatted with Derek in the dealer's room as well. At last weekend's , before Derek and the rest of the audience leaned back in their seats for the original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda), two men took the stage to introduce the film. Kyle Yount is the producer and host of the Kaijucast, the world's premier Godzilla-related podcast, and August Ragone has been called the best Japanese fantasy film historian working in English today. (Mr. Ragone's new book was just released, and it looks GORGEOUS!) Kyle and August presented the background of the movie - how it was conceived, its influences, the primary players in the creation of the Godzilla franchise, etc. Also, Derek completes his look at the the recent Sony blu-ray 2-disc Godzilla movie releases - and . The original Godzilla (dir. Ishirô Honda) is in the middle of a limited theatrical run, and Monster Kid Radio crashed a screening at Portland's Hollywood Theatre. Derek was there, and was joined by MKR regulars Ray Jelinek and Chris McMillan. Chris and Derek previous talked about Godzilla last year on Episodes and , but this was a first-time viewing of the film for Ray. Also, Derek takes a look at the recent blu-ray double-disc releases of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah & Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II & Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. Ray Jelinek continues his Infra-Man stint on Monster Kid Radio as he and Derek thunder fist punch their way into the nitty gritty of this 1975 Shan Hua-directed film. Ray's life was changed the day he saw this film as a child, and Derek wishes he had that same formative experience. In addition to Derek and Ray wrapping up their discussion of Infra-Man, Derek learns about Ray's childhood horror host. When Derek first started talking with his friends about about launching Monster Kid Radio, Ray Jelinek started talking about a movie he remembered seeing when he was a kid. That movie was 1975's Infra-Man (dir. Shan Hua), and while it wasn't a movie that would normally find a home in the Monster Kid Radio wheelhouse, Ray's enthusiasm and outright glee when talking about this movie makes Infra-Man something we DEFINITELY need to talk about on the podcast.
