What happens when you completely disagree with someone's beliefs but still choose to show them human dignity? In this episode of Spiritually Hungry we talk to Matthew Stevenson, a Jewish student who invited Derek Black, once a rising leader in the white nationalist movement, to his weekly Shabbat dinners. Instead of debating or condemning Derek, Matthew offered connection—an approach that, over time, played a crucial role in Derek questioning and ultimately rejecting white nationalism. Tune in to hear how a simple act of compassion helped transform a life. Further Reading:Rising Out of Hatred by Eli Saslow

Have you ever wondered how cultivating a personal relationship with God could influence your life? This episode explores this concept in depth, focusing on the teachings of Matthew 6 and how they encourage us to shift our gaze away from societal approval and towards God's approval. We dive into the allegory of "the stage versus the stable," exploring how our quest for validation often leads us astray and how a stable, grounded connection with the divine can bring about peace and fulfillment.Do you feel like you're constantly pushing beyond your capacity to provide for your needs? The episode enlightens listeners about the power of trusting God's provisions and understanding our own limitations. We also tap into the importance of discipline, inspired by Matthew Stevenson's sermon, and assert that discipline is indeed cheaper than regret. The episode also underlines the power of trusting God's plan and recognizing when our own strength falls short. Our commitment to faith and the church is also put under the lens as we discuss the importance of standing firm in faith despite the stigma attached to it. We challenge the notion of running away from our faith and encourage listeners to wear their faith proudly, understanding that failure is not an end but a beginning. This episode is a rich exploration of faith, discipline, and growth. Pastor Matthew Stevenson and Dr Matt Mouzakis Language of Complementarian See https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2015/03/02/revisionist-history-on-the-term-complementarian/ and https://www.cbeinternational.org/resource/genesis-confusion/ for a summary of the history of the language surrounding this issue. 1 Tim 2:11-14 Matt M. misspoke about the parsing of the greek tense of epitrepo (I do not permit). The tense is present active indicative. The reason behind the interpretation of “at this time” is due to the use of epitrepo in the rest of scripture where it is always in the context of a local situation. “At this time” is based on the context and this grammatical information. See https://margmowczko.com/1-timothy-212-and-1-corinthians-1434-epitrepo/. Scholars such as Philip Payne (Man and Women one in Christ), Craig Keener (IVP Bible Background Commentary, Paul and Women), Scot McKnight (Blue Parakeet), Andrew Bartlett (Men and Women in Christ), and more come to this same conclusion based on this grammatical construction, seeing it as a time bound event just for a certain period for the church in Ephesus. It is addressed to certain women in that church in the first century. 1 Tim 3 John Chrysostom Homily 11.1 on 1 Tim 3: “The women likewise”. Paul meant the [women] deacons [τας διακονους]. There are those who think he was talking about women in general. No, that is not the case. It would have made no sense to have inserted here something about women in general. He was referring to those having the dignity of the diaconate [της διακονιας]. “Let deacons be the husband of one wife.” This is also appropriately said of women deacons [γυναικων διακονων], for this [monogamy] is necessary, useful and proper to the highest degree in the Church. 1 Corinthians 11 Wayne Grudem makes arguments against the “source” interpretation and certain metaphorical meanings of head (kephele) saying it never meant source and has a meaning of authority. Many scholars have push back on his article on this in 1985 showing that a literal head or source are the most prominent interpretations and there is a possibility for “authority” being a gloss of this term, though a minority one. Yet, Philip Payne argues that “source” is the most used metaphor for kephele (see Payne, Man and Women: One in Christ, 113-139). See https://www.pbpayne.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/what-about-headship-ch7.pdf Here is a history of the debate: https://www.cbeinternational.org/resource/meta-study-debate-over-meaning-head-kephale-pauls-writings/ The interpretation of kephele (head) as “authority over” is based on a cherry-picking of Greek lexicons. Witt specifically calls out complementarian Wayne Grudem, who argues for this meaning based on six Greek lexicons, while Philip Payne provides nineteen Greek lexicons where “authority” is not listed as a meaning for kephale. (Witt, Icons of Christ, 128). See an overview of Witt's work on kephele in this article: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/fleshofmyflesh/2023/01/headship-in-1-corinthians-a-source-of-misunderstanding/ The Septuagint uses the Hebrew word for “head” (rosh), meaning a literal head, when the translators invariably translated rosh into kephalē. However in Hebrew, like in English, “head” can also mean a leader or ruler. In the instances where rosh meant a leader the translators did not use the word kephalē in their translation; instead, they typically used the Greek word archōn, which does mean ruler or leader. It seems that most of the translators of the LXX knew that kephalē does not usually mean leader, ruler, or person in authority. Ephesians 5:21-33 Originally there was no verb in Ephesians 5:22. The earliest manuscripts of Ephesians 5:22 do not include the verb “submit.” Jerome even writes that in Greek manuscripts verse 22 never repeats the verb “submit” from verse 21. Shalom. Yahweh in the name of Jesus Christ has me flowing in an Esther mode this evening-can't allow logic, reason, opinions or traditions of self or mankind to hinder or thwart my act of obedience in spirit and truth in this hour...and I'm just going to move in faith per the promptings I'm receiving from Holy Spirit.   With regard to the life and spirit of the living word found in the book of Esther, let us all recall to mind and heart the wisdom of Yahweh: Isaiah 55:8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. (biblehub.com); 1 Corinthians 1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. (biblehub.com); 1 Corinthians 1:28 Parallel: And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: (biblehub.com); 1 Corinthians 1:29 Parallel: That no flesh should glory in his presence. (biblehub.com)1 Corinthians 1:30 Parallel: But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: (biblehub.com); 1 Corinthians 1:31 Parallel: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. (biblehub.com); Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; (biblehub.com); Proverbs 3:6 in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. (biblehub.com); Proverbs 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. (biblehub.com); Alright.  Just like colors in scripture, we know numbers (scripturally based numbers) are also of great importance to Yahweh in the name of Jesus Christ. We are in the twelfth month per the Gregorian calendar, which, speaks to Yahweh and his governmental order, foundation, sovereignty: Meaning of the Number 12 in the Bible (biblestudy.org). According to the Hebrew calendar we are currently in the 10th month (Tevet) and biblically the number 10 signifies Yahweh's testimony & completion of order, glory to Jesus Meaning of the Number 10 in the Bible (biblestudy.org). I recently posted: In the Name of Jesus, Let Us Shama the Word of God, Jesus Now and Forevermore (podbean.com) December 19, 2021. Today, I received a bit of conviction from Holy Spirit and was reminded of the above post along with a post He'd brought back to my remembrance earlier this month of December that I'd published May 5, 2021.  Earlier this month of December, I received a prompting by Holy Spirit to republish my May 5, 2021 post; however, Holy Spirit graced me with the opportunity to process a few more things with him prior to republishing the post.  It's interesting because people of God, He led us to the Hebrew word, "shama" H8085 - šāmaʿ - Strong's Hebrew Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org) on 12/19 which speaks of obedience and hearing the voice of God. The title of my post from May 5, 2021 is, "Obedient in Everything: My Testimony by Faith." Also interesting praise Jesus, is the word Holy Spirit gave us, introduced us to for that post in May: "kyroo." G2964 - kyroō - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org) which absolutely is working in concert with so many of the confirmed logos and rhema I've received from Holy Spirit from 2018-present day in the name of Jesus Christ; specifically regarding the meaning to make valid because it speaks to our word of promise Strong's #616 - ἀποκυέω - Old & New Testament Greek Lexical Dictionary - StudyLight.org and Yahweh perfecting his ordained kingdom spouses for his ordained supernatural kingdom marriage unions in Jesus Christ; which by the way shall be covered by his Almighty hand, sustained, and protected for his glory and kingdom agenda for such a time as this and beyond in Jesus name. I'm prompted by Holy Spirit in this twelfth month of 2021 to kyroo this evening by faith through love in Jesus Christ...in partnership with his word, will, way, and leading in Jesus' name.  I didn't know in May 2021 when I published my faith testimony what I came to learn in September 2021and I had to take that back to Jesus and process a great deal of things... even tonight all I know people of God in spirit and truth is I need to do this here and now for such a time as this and by grace and faith, Holy Spirit is taking care of it all in the name of Jesus per his faithfulness, righteousness, goodness, mercy, compassion, grace, will, word, his love, holy covenant and promise in the name of Jesus that his kingdom come and will be done on earth as in heaven for such a time as this and beyond. It is written, Isaiah 55:11 so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it. (biblehub.com); which, reaffirms word given and confirmed-Ezekiel 47:8-12 posted November 25, 2021: Trusting The Faithfulness of Yahweh In Jesus Name (podbean.com) I've got Yahweh in heart and hearing glory to Jesus: Yahweh ft. Matthew Stevenson, Chandler Moore - All Nations Music (Lyrics) - YouTube :D Here's my post from May 5, 2021 and I declare and decree it now in the name of Jesus Christ on earth as in heaven in spirit and truth for his glory, will, and kingdom come:  Obedient In Everything: My Testimony By Faith  May 5, 2021 Shalom Fam It has happened again where Holy Spirit has led me in scripture to an unfamiliar passage with and unfamiliar word used in scripture.  Listening to LIVE Instrumental Worship Soaking In His Presence, Holy Spirit led me at precisely 12:55 a.m. 5/5/2021 to this passage below.  You see, I was looking to meditate on a different passage in the chapter 2 Corinthians 2:14-17; however, Holy Spirit drew my attention first to verse 5-11 of 2 Corinthians 2; which, is a passage I'm not well acquainted with and it brought me to tears because as much as Jesus has guarded and guided me through this entire process, I've questioned Him on how I am to proceed in faith concerning the brokenness of heart though I know and agree with Jesus that I am chosen according to his living Word, will, plan, and kingdom purpose.  People of God, there were times I entertained the prospect of being wrong about my ordained kingdom spouse.  There were times even when fully persuaded of His word (God's word & promise), I desired to let go and move on.  Yet, Jesus through His living word beckoned me to remain steadfast in his word-He is faithful, righteous, and holy in all of his ways.  The living Word of God is absolutely trustworthy and sovereign.  The warfare has been on the battlefield of the mind and heart people of God.  Scripture states it is God's desire for us to remain in His love and to live and walk by His Holy Spirit and the seed of faith He has given to us.  For it is written we walk by faith and not by sight.  We are advised not to lean on our own understanding, not to doubt or be double minded yet there were times I did all of those things and repented asking Him to help me with my unbelief and to forgive me for leaning on my own understanding or going ahead of him at times during this process.   I have inquired of Jesus for some time now to resolve the matter of heart aforementioned in this post.  This is the day and hour, He (Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Son of the Most High God) has chosen to answer my prayer concerning the matter.  He did so by the scripture 2 Corinthians 2:5-11.  I have not attempted to interact with or observe via social media my ordained kingdom spouse for several months to date nor do I anticipate doing so following this post.  I only want to remain in obedience to the leading of Holy Spirit despite my feelings or thoughts on the matter verse 7,8,9,10, and 11 of 2 Corinthians 2.  I trust God to heal my heart concerning the matter for it is written I am healed by his stripes Isaiah 53:5. Praise God, love bears all things people of God 1 Corinthians 13:7,13. So...in the life and spirit found in 2 Corinthians 2:7,8,9,10, & 11; I come into agreement with the living word of God in this passage and word Kyroo G2964 - kyroō - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org). I stake my claim (in and through the love of Jesus Christ my Lord, Savior, Husband, Redeemer, & Lord of Hosts) the love Jesus Christ has given me for my ordained kingdom spouse, I've chosen of my own free will to embrace and protect by the grace, mercy, and will of Jesus Christ within me.  I love my ordained kingdom spouse with an unfailing, unwavering, unconditional love.  I love, respect, and honor my ordained kingdom spouse in spirit and truth on earth as in heaven.  I love him as Christ loves the church: the bride, as Hosea loved Gomer, as the father loved his prodigal son.  I bless Jesus for forgiving me for all my sins and for granting me mercy, grace, and favor.  I forgive, love, and will soon by faith comfort my ordained kingdom spouse verse 7 of 2 Corinthians 2.   This same grace of God affords me the opportunity to publish this post for all to see out of obedience and via faith my Jesus my Lord and Savior be glorified. I pray Jesus be glorified in spirit and truth and my act of obedience please King Jesus concerning this matter. G2964 - kyroō - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org) 2 Corinthians 2:7-8 Shalom.

Many people talk about responding to threats or people they disagree with with empathy, compassion, treating everyone with respect. In practice, I see people doing the opposite. They don't feel, "I'm right, you're wrong." They feel "I understand reality, you don't. I have to teach you." or often they feel they have to force them.Likewise, on the environment, nearly all environments try to convince people who disagree with them through lecture, facts, figures, and charts. When that doesn't work, they resort to shame, guilt, eventually disengaging and trying to outpower them through legislation.Matthew Stevenson did the opposite. He practiced what many preach and it worked. In our first episode, which I recommend first, he shared how he worked and his mindset. The more I heard, the more fascinating I found it. More to the point, the more practical and effective I found it.The word convince, by the way, comes from the root -vince as in vanquish, to defeat. Attempts to convince generally provoke debate. After all the person was already right in their own mind before you talked to them. Maybe you're wrong. If you aren't open to it, why should they be? When was the last time someone defeated or vanquished you and you said, "Okay, now I agree with you and I'll follow you."I invited Matthew back because he shared how to do what many of us talk about and we know great historical figures practiced, but few of us know of people-on-the-street role models we can follow.Would I have predicted when starting this podcast, this effort to bring leadership to sustainability, that I would talk about a white nationalist website Storm Front with an orthodox Jew? I doubt it, but I find him one of the best role models for me. Most guests I think of as role models for listeners, experimenting sharing environmental values most of us don't, acting on them, doing what almost no one has yet so we can all learn from them. With Matthew, he's doing what I endeavor to. It's emotionally incredibly hard when I feel I know I'm right or that I understand reality but they don't to end up condescending or sounding self-righeous because I feel self-righteous, it's hard then to conjure up humility, empathize, listen, and get to a place where they're right and I'm wrong. So he's a role model for me. His strategy took a long time but it worked and the solution is enduring. Plus he laughs and jokes about it.He didn't convince, vanquish, or win. He made a friend. Matthew is friends with the guy who built the white nationalist online community, Stormfront. He is also an observant orthodox Jew. You may have heard about him because the pair made headlines and appeared on the Daily Show and shows like that.Matthew and Derek Black made headlines because Matthew invited Derek to Shabat dinner in college. They became friends. Derek eventually disavowed his earlier beliefs, in large part because of their friendship. In our conversation, Matthew shares his side of the story. Most interviews featured Derek, which will get more ratings, but I find Matthew's initiative in leading by engaging more inspiring, especially for those of us not raised as white nationalists. I compare how the mainstream approaches people they disagree with---"punch a Nazi" or saying the others don't care---with Matthew's approach. I don't think people realize Matthew's effectiveness.I could try to describe it, but Matthew has lived it, in particular in a situation with as diametrically opposed views you can imagine. Rarely do I find myself speechless to add to what the guest said. All I can say is I learned more than I expected and I expected to learn a lot.I expect to listen to this episode many times over the years. I'll keep in touch with Matthew too and bring him back. What I'm trying to work on in leading people I disagree with, he's done for longer with more personal at stake.Matthew on the On Being podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today, I am referencing Dr. Vivek Murthy's book, Together, to offer some added support for the larger conversation around institutional racism, oppression and social justice.  In this episode, Dr. Jessica Higgins discusses:  The right of human belonging and humanization. The role of disconnection, dehumanization, fear and distrust that plays into our experience. How do we build trust, repair and relationship together.  "The challenge of the remainder of our century is how are we as a global family going to attend to the basic fundamentals of creating the right of belonging?" John Paul Lederach in "Together" by Dr. Vivek Murthy Exploring the question..."how do we experience more connection collectively." How to engage in higher quality presence and connection when differences exist. "I have a fundamental belief that at the root of every person is a spark of the Creator. There's something that binds everyone. Even if they are behaving in ways I find reprehensible, we still share a common humanity. And that can't be erased. Even if someone is doing things that are really against me or harming me or society. I feel somewhat of a responsibility to that person."
