Wesley Taylor (one of this podcast's earliest guests!) is a multi-talented artist who's taking the entertainment industry by storm and has recently debuted as a writer AND director in his new movie, “Summoning Sylvia”. Wesley talks about creating "Summoning Sylvia" with his friend, Alex Wyse, how the idea for it started, the casting process, and making sure it's not just another typical gay movie. Working alongside Meryl Streep in the hit Hulu series "Only Murders in the Building" is a dream come true for Wesley. He shares the difference between working with actors with theatre experience versus people who've only done tv and films, and why he prefers to disassociate during set. Wesley reflects on his early days as a writer, learning to take himself seriously, and finding Alex which, to him, felt like finding his other half in terms of creativity. Having been in the industry for years, he shares some tips to keep getting interested and inspired, such as asking favors, strategically acquiring what you need to acquire, looking at auditions as an opportunity to show off, and getting motivated by laughter. Wesley Taylor is an actor who has won a Theatre World Award and Chita Rivera Award and was an Outer Critics Circle nominee. He made his Broadway debut in the original cast of “Rock of Ages” before starring opposite Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in the original cast of Broadway's “The Addams Family”. He also originated the role of Sheldon J. Plankton in “Spongebob Squarepants” before it was filmed for Nickelodeon as “The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!”. Wesley's additional tv and film credits include “The Good Wife”, “The Tomorrow People”, and “Smash”. He co-created and starred in three original digital series, including the latest Emmy-nominated “Indoor Boys” with Alex Wyse. He will also appear in the 3rd season of “Only Murders in the Building” with Alex. Recently, he and Alex made their feature film debut as writers and directors in “Summoning Sylvia”, a new movie out now for a limited theatrical release and now available to stream. Bringing cartoon characters to life on stage is no easy feat. After Ethan Slater took on the role of a lifetime playing SpongeBob in the Broadway musical, he was given one key piece of advice from the original SpongeBob Tom Kenny: “Never wear yellow. You can sometimes wear a red tie.” Wesley Taylor first approached his equally daunting role as Plankton by adding an ankle-burning bounce to every step. The behind-the-stage stories from the infamous SpongeBob musical seem endless — from wacky auditions to hilarious first aid emergencies, Wesley and Ethan give us a glimpse into what it took to make Broadway's best show ever, “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Understudy” premiered on April 9th, 2012. It was written by Jerome Hairston, and directed by Adam Dernstein. The viewership dipped yet again from the previous week, premiering to an audience of 5.99 million viewers. Songs this week featured one cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” and two original songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman: a sort of reprise of Marilyn’s very first song in the series, but this time Katherine McPhee singing “Never Give All the Heart,” and a new song featuring stand-in Christian Borle called “Don’t Say Yes Until I Finish Talking.” The episode opens with a room of cast, creatives and investors waiting to start a reading of the Bombshell script. Waiting, that is, on Hollywood star Rebecca Duvall - who misses playing Marilyn in the reading because she’s stuck in Cuba. In Rebecca’s absence, Tom, Julia and Derek come to Karen telling her that “they want her to understudy Marilyn.” Many of her ensemblist cohorts giggle with Karen excitedly, but Bobby and Sam note that “she’s never going to hack it - especially after Ivy breaks her kneecaps.” Ivy is furious that Karen has been given the job, even when Derek tells her that her outburst at Heaven on Earth means he can’t “even hire her for the chorus.” Derek verbally assaults Karen in rehearsal, which causes Bobby and Jessica and place bets on whether Karen will cry. Later at her apartment, Ivy shows a moment of kindness and advises Derek that “the only directors that were ever successful with Marilyn were the ones who babied her.” She continues her rebranding campaign, joining Karen and the ensemblists of Bombshell for appletinis after rehearsal and bringing her once-rival a pair of Monroe-inspired sunglasses. Back in rehearsal, Derek calls the cast to run “the Zanuck number” about Darryl R. Zanuck, producer of All About Eve and The Grapes of Wrath. When Derek asks “Where is Zanuck?,” Tom replies “You don’t want to know, but I’m standing in today.” The steam room-inspired number is performed full out by Manuel Herrera, Curtis Holbrook, Keith Kuhl, Spencer Liff, Leslie Odom, Jr., J. Manuel Santos, Phillip Spaeth and Wesley Taylor, One run through seems to be good enough, as Derek gives no notes and quickly moves on to Karen to guide her with kindness. When Rebecca Duvall’s return is imminent, Derek shows up at Karen’s apartment to thank her for her good work. Not only that - he apologizes to Karen for his behavior back in the pilot episode. When Karen’s boyfriend Dev sees Derek walking out of their building, the two men get into a sidewalk fist fight. Dev floats the idea that she quit the show to avoid Derek. She argues back, telling Dev “Marilyn is everything I came to this city to do - everything that I want to be.” She goes to rehearsal the next day, covering the role of Marilyn until Rebecca Duvall shows (played by real life star Uma Thurman!) I met Alex Wyse 3 or 4 years ago after an event and we became quick friends. Aside from being hilarious, he has such a wealth of experience and the perspective he's gained from all the work he's done is so informative and, I think, helpful for anyone who's trying to figure out how to navigate a career in entertainment. He's worked on and off-broadway, in television, film, as a producer and most recently he and his writing partner, Wesley Taylor, released the third season of their award winning web series INDOOR BOYS. I thought this would be a perfect time to sit down and reflect with Alex on where he's at. He was pretty insistent with me that this not be a rundown of his resume, which I was thrilled to hear. I wasn't quite sure where the conversation would take us, but we found ourselves talking about self-worth, the definition of success, creating your own path, mothers and sons, and much much more. Wether you know Alex or not, I think you're really going to come to appreciate what's he's got to share. On television, Wyse has appeared in multiple roles since 2010 including Bored to Death, Switched at Birth, The Bold and the Beautiful, Marvel's Iron Fist, and Masters of Sex. On film, he appeared opposite America Ferrera in X/Y. With Wesley Taylor, he co-created, wrote, directed, and starred in the web series Indoor Boys. To date, it has been nominated for eighteen Indie Series Awards and won six, including Best Web Series – Comedy, Best Writing – Comedy, and Best Lead Actor – Comedy for Wyse. In theater, he performed in various regional productions before making his Broadway debut in Lysistrata Jones, which ran at the Walter Kerr Theatre from 2011 to 2012. Also on Broadway, he played schoolboy Georg Zirschnitz in the Deaf West Theatre's production of Spring Awakening, and in 2018, he joined the musical Waitress, as Ogie. Off-Broadway, he has been seen in Lysistrata Jones, Triassic Parq, Bare, and Ride the Cyclone. In 2013–2014, he toured with the national company of Wicked, playing the role of Boq. And in 2015, he appeared opposite Evan Rachel Wood and Rumer Willis in For the Record: Dear John Hughes in Los Angeles. He also co-produced the Broadway transfer of Heidi Schreck's play What the Constitution Means to Me, which opened at the Helen Hayes Theater on March 31, 2019. The Come Up is a podcast that holds space for honest conversations about the reality of being a growing artist in the entertainment industry today. The myth of "making it" tells us that our happiness and fulfillment is dependent on a specific outcome when the truth is that there is no moment of arrival - the journey is never ending. This podcast will serve as an archive of individual perspectives and a source of inspiration for anyone navigating their own creative path. It's an opportunity to reflect on where we've been, where we're at, and where we're going. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist, whistleblower, and former Anonymous associate Barrett Brown joins us to discuss misconduct by police and press in Brown's hometown of Dallas, Texas. Dallas police have come under heavy scrutiny since the shooting death of Botham Jean, in his own apartment, by police officer Amber Guyger. Guyger lived in the same building and says she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment thinking it was her own. According to Guyger she believed that Jean was an intruder and fatally shot the 26-year old Harding University alumnus and PricewaterhouseCoopers accountant. Guyger has since been convicted for Jean's murder and sentenced to a 10-yea prison sentence. Barrett Brown Brown, a recipient of the National Magazine Award during his time with The Intercept, covered the murder of Botham Jean for the local press outlet D Magazine. While covering Botham Jean's murder he has been critical not only of the Dallas Police Department, but also the city's local press. Since then a Facebook account going by the name "Wesley Taylor, Jr." made a bomb threat directed towards D Magazine for publishing Brown's columns. Moreover, this person has harassed Brown's girlfriends and made threats directed at U.S. Democratic Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke. In the following conversation Brown discusses all of this and Dallas PD's response to the bomb threat. Trey Garrison aka alt right personality Spectre Additionally, Brown and I discuss how journalist Trey Garrison (real name: Norman Asa Garrison III) wrote for major city publications while living a double-life as the alt right personality "Spectre". Under this alias, Garrison became a notorious Twitter troll and host of the white nationalist podcast Third Rail. As Spectre, Garrison promoted #DayOftheBrick which encouraged harassment and physical violence against journalist. Under his Garrison byline, he wrote a column for the Dallas News entitled "Why I Don't Want Diversity in My Neighborhood" that was republished by the alt right outlet American Renaissance. Dallas Morning News Coverage of the Guyger Trial Brown argues that, all of these things, taken together display misconduct and lack of reflection on the part of both the Dallas police department and the city press. Moreover, he believes that these issues in Dallas represent a microcosm of a broader national issue that points towards an urgent need to reform media and police institutions in America. Barrett Brown and Julian Assange At the beginning of the show, Brown addresses his recent Twitter ban and the controversial comments he has made concerning Julian Assange. Barret and I have a frank discussion about his approach to criticizing Julian Assange and how his anger towards Assange has often manifested in admittedly outlandish statements on his part.
