The new season of The Lonely Palette is achingly close to starting up on Wednesday, June 7, but in the meantime, this week and next we're giving our feed over to some fellow Hub & Spoke shows that might pique your eardrums. Hub & Spoke, as you know, is our mighty audio collective of proudly independent podcasts. We aim to expand minds, viewpoints, knowledge, understanding. We have zero corporate interests or expectations, which means we are offbeat, unexpected, formidable, and really poor, so please take a listen to our shows and, if you like what we do, join our mailing list and consider supporting the collective: www.hubspokeaudio.org Link to our live event in at the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock, VT on Thursday, June 15: https://normanwilliams.org/events/podcasts-a-listening-event/ *** Today's episode: "Rekindling Hope" by Out There Carolyn McDonald was struggling — hard. Hey there - it's Vanessa. There will be a new episode of Nocturne in your feed next week, but in the meantime, I want to share a story from another podcast that I think you'll really like. The show is called Out There, and it's one of our fellow podcasts in the Hub & Spoke audio collective. On the surface, Out There is about the outdoors. But just like the other Hub & Spoke shows, it's so much more than that. Their stories explore what it means to be human, and they use nature as a lens to help you make sense of the world. You can find Out There wherever you listen to podcasts and at outtherepodcast.com Story by Stepfanie Aguilar. Editing and sound design by Willow Belden. Music includes selections from Marc Merza and Blue Dot Sessions
In 2015, Out There host Willow Belden signed up for a 70-mile mountain bike race. She had always liked big athletic challenges, but this time, pushing her limits turned out to be a mistake. On this episode, she shares her story. It's about trying to prove yourself — and learning when to say no. Click here to see the full show notes for this episode. SUPPORT OUT THERE: Become a patron

“It's the simple things” – is what I thought about when I interviewed Willow Belden for our latest What's Your Why? episode. Her award-winning podcast “Out There” is not only about people who love nature but also about how people discover the outdoors even when they live in a cement jungle in the city. I think it's why the West has become so popular. People want to escape the hectic grind of the urban city life. Being outside and enjoying nature is for everyone – everywhere - people of all shapes, sizes and abilities. I hope you enjoy the podcast! And please leave a comment. Thanks Willow!
Sarah Dealy was not outdoorsy. But at age 20, during a severe bout of depression, she enrolled in a wilderness therapy program. By the end of the program, she wanted to become an “outdoor girl.”But becoming the outdoorswoman of her dreams didn't come naturally. Sarah was an indoor kid at heart. She disliked many of the activities she imagined her outdoorsy self doing. On the first episode of Out There Podcast's new season, Sarah takes us from the desert of Utah to the mountains of Colorado and explores what happens when the person you think you want to be doesn't mesh with the person you are.About Out ThereLaunched in 2015, Out There is a podcast that explores big questions through intimate stories outdoors. After quitting her job at NPR to thru-hike the Colorado Trail, Willow was filled with confidence and a desire to help tell stories of adventure to the world. The job at NPR wasn’t satisfying her desire to do something outside the box and the recent passing of her mother was enough for her to reset the path she was going down. To say the least, the 5-week thru-hike ultimately changed her life and after getting back she quickly began working on her new project, a podcast, Out There. Today we’re going to hear Willow’s story of reinvention and self-discovery that led her down a path less taken. Out There was recently listed as the #1 outdoor podcast in iTunes, has made appearances in media throughout the world and is considered one of the best outdoor and adventure podcasts out there... For 141 years since its first ascent, mountaineers from around the world traveled to climb la Meije in the Massif des Écrins of France. Meanwhile, the permafrost that held its stones together was melting. On August 7, 2018, rockfall destroyed much of the normal route. In this On Belay story from Alpinist 68 (Winter 2019-20), Benjamin Ribeyre and Erin Smart recount a search for a new way up the peak amid the uncertainties of the planet’s future. Trail magic is part serendipity, part heroism, part… well, magic. It's a helping hand when hikers need it most. Outlandish is partnering with the Out There podcast to bring you today's story. We'll meet Willow Belden, a radio-maker who's thru-hiked the Colorado Trail. She helps us answer the question of why trail angels are so kind. What makes an angel commit to offering repeated acts of altruism?
Willow produces the Out There Podcast and tells us all about the show, how she got into podcasting and her experience as an NPR host on Wyoming Public radio. Facebook Twitter Instagram The Outdoor Biz Podcast Please give us a rating and review HERE Show Notes First Exposure to the Outdoors Growing up I lived in New York City, which is not exactly outdoors-y right. But my family had this little cabin up in Maine. My grandfather had bought land on a lake up there were way back when it was dirt cheap and then they built this cabin. So I often spent most of the summer up there and we would kayak and swim and just kind of spend all day outside. I remember entire summers where I never wore shoes, except maybe if my mom made me. If we had to go to the grocery store or something. But that was always sort of my happy place Things we talked about Out There Podcast Northwoods Outfitters NPR Wyoming Public Radio The Colorado Trail Common Outdoor Ground Outdoor Activities Hiking Backpacking Mtn Biking Climbing Skiing Advice, tips I think a lot of us are hesitant to take a leap and try new things if we don't feel like we already have the skills to do them. I certainly was that way where it's like, wow, I don't already know how to do this so I obviously I can't do it. I think honestly hiking the Colorado trail was something where I didn't know how to do it, but I did a bunch of research and I figured it out and it worked. And because that worked, then I think that gave me the courage to launch Out There cause I was like, well, all right, I don't know how to do this either, but we're going to give it a try and figure it out and see. So I think it's important to just remember that it's okay to be a beginner at things and that if you want something enough, you can do the research you need and you can talk to the people who know how to do it and make it happen. I don't want to make it seem like anything you want to do as possible, but it is important to remember that you don't have to already know how to do everything in order to get started with something in order to thrive at it. Willow’s Wild Idea: To quit her job and go on a five-hundred-mile hike in Colorado. Then, to start a podcast that shares unique stories of people in the outdoors. Willow Belden is the host of Out There, a podcast that discusses big life questions in an outdoor setting. Willow talks to ultra-marathoners, Everest climbers, hikers, cyclist, skiers, and all kinds of adventurers about their journeys, giving listeners a chance to hear about the transformative powers of nature. Before she started her podcast, Willow worked at Wyoming Public Radio. You can tell by the way she edits her show and her soothing radio voice. It was a great job, but she decided to quit to hike the Colorado Trail, a thru-hike of about 500 miles. Willow and I talked about why she quit her job to go on a thru-hike, what she learned along the way, and why chocolate was so important on the trail. We also talk about the challenges of starting a podcast, what she’s learned from losing a parent, and what she has learned from her diverse guests, including great lessons about failure. Listen to this episode if: You love hiking and the outdoors. You listen to public radio or want to start a podcast. You’ve lost a parent. You want to try thru-hiking. You have ever been afraid to fail. For full show notes, including guest links and books mentioned during the episode, visit: http://wildideasworthliving.com/49

Can failure bring out the best in you? We're excited to share one of our favorite outdoor podcasts with you, "Out There Podcast." This week, we chat with host Willow Belden and share her award-winning episode, "High On Failure." Last spring, Jordan Wirfs-Brock attempted one of the toughest trail running races in existence: a 550-miler called Infinitus, which took place in the rugged mountains of Vermont. Jordan wasn't new to ultra running, but this race was more extreme than anything she'd done before. And it broke her: she failed to finish. Curiously, though, the failure didn't leave her feeling defeated. In fact, it turned out to be one of the best things that's ever happened to her. Thanks to our sponsor, Oru Kayak. 00:00:00 - Joe Batwinis, from our sister show Technically Speaking, joins us to discuss whether or not we should drop the S (for science) from STEM education as the hard work to earn the degree doesn't seem to be paying off for most graduates. 00:16:42 - Regardless of their major, many college students enjoy a drink. We're not in college anymore, but we do our best. Joe enjoys a Raspberry Brown from the Lost Coast Brewery but Patrick thinks his Rogue made Mocha Porter is superior. Ryan avoids the fray with a cocktail called the "Gentle Giraffe" invented by former guest of the show Willow Belden. To make one for yourself and a friend, simply combine in a shaker: 2 shots of good aged rum 1 shot Maraschino liqueur 6 ozpineapple juice 00:22:40 - You should never drink and drive. You can, however, drink and discuss movies about driving such as Rush which this week gets the Trailer Trash Talk treatment! 00:33:21 - Photographing lions is both risky and difficult. Two intrepid photographers build some robots to help them out, which makes both the tech and bio nerds quite happy. 00:46:05 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like modifying cameras, they're both likely to void your waranty. Joe begins with a voicemail from Danielle N. who wants to know, based on previous discussions of robotic cars, if removing humans from the equation will eliminate traffic jams. Ryan receives a delightful donation (Thanks!) from Michael M. along with an e-mail about 3D modelling of the complicated skulls of animals like crocodiles and fish for the purposes of research. Patrick suggests winning an award, and Ryan suggests following some relevant folks on Twitter. Patrick finishes the show with an e-mail from Jaroslav T. who has spotted some bigfoots (or is it bigfeets?) in the wilds of Louisiana, and thought we should know. We agree that this is indeed important information, but are more concerned with how to refer to the beasts in the plural form. Help us out in the comments!
