Royal Insider Deep Crown observed, “I've been observing Prince Harry's public appearances and demeanor closely over the past few years, and I can't help but notice a distinct pattern emerging. When he's at these carefully staged events with Meghan, whether it's a red carpet gala or a charity function, there's a certain stiffness to him. A sense of unease, like he's not quite sure how to navigate this new world he finds himself in. The smile doesn't quite reach his eyes, the laughter seems a bit forced. It's as if he's playing a role, one that doesn't come naturally to him.But then, every once in a while, we catch a glimpse of the old Harry. The cheeky, irreverent prince who wore his heart on his sleeve and never took himself too seriously. It's usually when he's out with his old friends, the ones who knew him long before he became the Duke of Sussex. There's a lightness to him in those moments, a sense of ease and camaraderie that's been missing from his public persona of late.Meghan is rarely, if ever, present during those candid moments. It's as if Harry can only truly be himself when he's away from the pressures and expectations of his new life. When he's just 'one of the lads,' free to let loose and enjoy himself without worrying about how it will be perceived by the media or the public. It's a telling dichotomy, and one that speaks volumes about the challenges Harry has faced in adapting to his new reality. He's a man torn between two worlds, struggling to find his place and his purpose. On the one hand, he's committed to his wife and the life they've built together, but on the other, there's a part of him that yearns for the simplicity and freedom of his old existence.Perhaps in time, Harry will find a way to reconcile these two aspects of himself. To be the devoted husband and father, the compassionate activist and philanthropist, while also holding onto the essence of who he's always been - the fun-loving, mischievous prince who captured the hearts of so many. But for now, it seems he's still grappling with that duality, and it's a struggle that plays out in the public eye, for all the world to see.Meghan recently announced her new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, on social media. However, The Independent discovered that the UK website domain for the brand surprisingly leads to a foodbank instead of the expected lifestyle website. The '.com' website leads to a stylized page introducing Meghan's brand and features a waiting list for interested individuals to join.Curiously, the '.uk' domain for American Riviera Orchard directs visitors to a landing page for the Trussell Trust, a foodbank charity, and subsequently to a fundraiser. This unexpected redirection has raised questions about the brand's UK website and its connection to the charity. Harry has officially changed his country of residence from the United Kingdom to the United States in paperwork related toTravalyst. For the past four years, Harry had continued to list his country of residence as the U.K. in the documentation confirming his status as a "person with significant control" over Travalyst, holding 75 percent or more of the shares and voting rights. However, a recent filing at Britain's Companies House, seen by Newsweek, stated: "New Country/State Usually Resident: UNITED STATES."The change was made on June 29, 2023, the same day Buckingham Palace publicly confirmed that Harry and Meghan had officially moved out of Frogmore Cottage. The eviction notice was sent to the couple in January 2023, just days after the publication of Prince Harry's memoir, "Spare," which made numerous allegations against the royal family. Meghan and Harry recently experienced an "awkward" moment on camera during an event in Miami. The incident occurred when Meghan presented Harry with an award and then posed for a photo shoot with the Duke and others, which was captured by the couple's Netflix cameras for an upcoming show.

In Part I of our two-part conversation about influence, we began to uncover just how broadly and how deeply the power of influence runs. In our world today, influence has taken on a new - and in some ways even more significant meaning - than ever before. Now because we have social media, we have created a space for influencers to arise within our midst. Sometimes these individuals appear on the scene from very unlikely backgrounds. The vast majority of the most popular of these influencers have been given our attention because they are famous. Curiously, much of their influence is not based on the expertise that was required to master their craft. Because influence happens all of the time at all different levels, our big question now is, how can we become more effective influencers in our everyday lives?

In the first half, Dr. Eric Haseltine, a former Director of Research at the NSA, and Chris Gilbert, an MD with a PhD in Physiology, discussed their new study of the science of UFOs. "My belief is that we aren't looking at one phenomenon," said Haseltine. Some of the sightings may involve secret military craft, others could be hobbyists with drones, and people trying to fake things for their own purposes, he mused, and yet he acknowledged that some UAPs appear to be completely inexplicable and represent a kind of physics or technology beyond current scientific understanding. In their work on the subject, Haseltine and Gilbert asked different questions about UFO technology, such as what if the objects had little or no mass, which would then take very little force to move. The US Navy actually has a patent on something similar, a laser holographic projector that creates plasmas in the air in various shapes, he noted.Gilbert looked at the issue through a focus on astrobiology and the intersection of medicine and UFOs. She pointed out that there are organisms that live in extreme environments and withstand such things as the vacuum of space, high radiation, and ultra-low or ultra-high temperatures, and this may be what we find with ET life forms. In fact, she continued, extraterrestrials may just consist of one cell, and could live in our body. She also cited how some people who have come into physical contact with a UFO have abnormal white patches that show up on MRIs of their brain that are similar to patients with multiple sclerosis. Haseltine talked about how certain metal compounds like bismuth, in combination with a strong magnetic field, demonstrate levitation properties and how bismuth is said to be one of the properties in allegedly recovered UFO material.----------Author, lecturer, and Fortean researcher Justin Bamforth has been investigating paranormal and high strangeness for over 20 years. In the latter half, he shared strange cases of Men in Black (MIB), doppelgangers, phantom photographers, and unexplained interactions. He believes that a degree of stress or a particular mindset can sometimes trigger the encounters that individuals report. The MIBs are sometimes described as exhibiting odd movements and robotic-sounding voice patterns. He recalled the account of Gary in the UK, who was doing physical training in a mountainous area, and saw a man moving at a very high speed yet showing no signs of exhaustion. Curiously, the man had no ears, just a completely smooth head and teardrop eyes.Bamforth recounted the tale of Andrew in Ontario from 1993, who had set up a video camera to record a meteor shower and instead caught a UFO. The next day, on a walk, he was approached by two men in dark suits and sunglasses, who had an unusual smell about them – "like rotten eggs sprinkled with cinnamon." One of the men brought up the video recording Andrew made the previous night, and said "What you saw was nothing. I advise you to get rid of the tape, and if you don't get rid of the tape, there's going to be some serious consequences." The men had an Asian appearance, with very tiny noses and lips, and their voices sounded slightly out-of-sync with a metallic timbre. Bamforth also detailed Tammy in Texas's missing time incident and how later she had an encounter with a similar-looking man to what Andrew described, who had a voice with an eerie reverberating quality. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

Even some non-believers are beginning to worry that the decline in religion may not be good for society, but does it also represent a new opportunity for the message of Christianity? Then, N.T. Wright is back to discuss his new book with co-author Michael Bird, “Jesus and the Powers.” While everyone knows mixing faith and politics can be dangerous, Wright says there's also a danger when we refuse to mix them. He talks to Skye about what the Bible says on matters of church and state, and why we should defend liberal democracy despite its many problems. Also this week: Is the sun alive? Passover- If a Small Piece of Hametz Fell Into Non-Hametz Food Before Pesah

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2024

Generally speaking, when a piece of forbidden food falls into permissible food, we apply the rule of "Battel Be'shishim," which means that we consider the forbidden food "nullified" if it constitutes one-sixtieth or less of the mixture. If the proportion of permissible food to forbidden food is 60:1, or more, we may consider the forbidden food null and void, such that the entire mixture becomes permissible for consumption. When it comes to Pesah, however, this is not the case. The Shulhan Aruch, following the position of the Rif (Rav Yishak Alfasi, Morocco, 1013-1103), rules that if a piece of Hametz falls into non-Hametz food on Pesah, the mixture becomes forbidden regardless of how small a proportion the Hametz constitutes. Hametz in even the smallest proportion – a "Mashehu" – renders the entire mixture forbidden for consumption on Pesah. This is why special care must be taken on Pesah to ensure that not even a crumb or tiny morsel of Hametz comes in contact with our food or utensils. However, this Halacha applies only when Hametz falls into food during Pesah. If a small amount of Hametz falls into food before Pesah, then we apply the standard rule of "Battel Be'shishim," and we consider the mixture free of Hametz as long as there is a proportion of 60:1 or higher of non-Hametz food to Hametz. Accordingly, the Shulhan Aruch rules (Orah Haim 477:4) that such a mixture is permissible for consumption on Pesah. Since the Hametz fell into the food before Pesah, and it was "Battel" ("nullified"), the mixture is permissible on Pesah, and we do not say that the small amount of Pesah is "reawakened" ("Hozer Ve'ne'ur") when the Hametz prohibition take effect on Ereb Pesah. Curiously, however, the Shulhan Aruch earlier (442:4) appears to contradict his own ruling in this regard. Discussing the status of medications containing Hametz, the Shulhan Aruch writes that if medicine was prepared with Hametz before Pesah, even if the Hametz constitutes just one-sixtieth or less of the mixture, the medicine may not be ingested on Pesah. Although one may keep the Hametz in his possession on Pesah in such a case, the medicine may not be ingested. This ruling appears to directly contradict the Shulhan Aruch's aforementioned ruling that the concept of "Battel Be'shishim" applies to Hametz that is mixed with non-Hametz before Pesah. According to that ruling, there seems to be no reason to forbid taking the medicine on Pesah, since the Hametz was "nullified" before Pesah and is not "reawakened" with the onset of the holiday. Several different approaches have been taken to resolve this seeming contradiction. The Peri Hadash (Rav Hizkiya Da Silva, 1659-1698) explains that in the case of medication, the Hametz was intentionally mixed with the non-Hametz ingredients. The Shulhan Aruch permits food that had been mixed with Hametz before Pesah only if the Hametz was mixed in unintentionally. But if one intentionally mixed Hametz with non-Hametz, even before Pesah, the mixture is forbidden for consumption on Pesah. The Tureh Zahab (Rav David Halevi Segal, 1586-1667) gives a different answer. He writes that in the case of medicine, the Hametz is the primary medicinal ingredient. As the Hametz substance is what gives the mixture its medicinal effect, it cannot be considered "negated," regardless of how small a proportion it constitutes. This resembles the case of a forbidden food used as a coagulating agent ("Dabar Ha'ma'amid"), which renders the product forbidden even if it comprises less than one-sixtieth of the mixture. Since the agent gives the food product its consistency, it cannot be considered "nullified." By the same token, a Hametz ingredient which produces a medicinal effect renders the medicine forbidden on Pesah even if the product was made before Pesah. Medications with Hametz may be permissible on Pesah for other reasons, as we will, please G-d, discuss in future editions of Daily Halacha, but for our purposes here, it suffices to note that, according to the Taz, the Shulhan Aruch's ruling concerning medications marks the exception to the rule. Hacham Ovadia Yosef, in his Yabia Omer (2:23), follows the Taz's approach. And thus, according to the Halacha, a mixture containing a small amount of Hametz is permissible on Pesah, as long as the mixture was prepared before Pesah, even if the Hametz was mixed in intentionally. Summary: If a piece of Hametz falls into non-Hametz food on Pesah, the entire mixture is forbidden for consumption regardless of how small a proportion the Hametz comprises. If the Hametz was mixed with the food before Pesah, then as long as the Hametz comprises no more than one-sixtieth of the mixture, the food is permissible on Pesah (with the possible exception of certain medications that contain Hametz, a subject which will be discussed in a separate context).

Hello Interactors,We are fully into spring and that means a shift toward cartography. I'll be exploring how abstract symbols, lines, and colors can both represent and misrepresent people, politics, and the physical environment. Maps are tools of power and persuasion, which can shape perceptions of space and reality, influence behavior, and maintain or challenge social norms and power structures.Today's post bridges Winter's focus on human behavior with the maps, plans, and politics of cities. In this case, Los Angeles and their attempts at curbing rising traffic related fatalities through safer forms of transportation infrastructure…but not without a fight from some unlikely foes.Let's go…CURBSIDE CASUALTIES LEAD TO ASPHALT ACTIVISMAngelinos recently passed a controversial measure intended to save lives. It won 63 percent in favor to 37 percent opposed. Maybe it wasn't so controversial after all. Why should helping save children from being violently killed be controversial in the first place? And why were firefighters leading the charge to kill a measure that saves lives.Car collisions were the leading cause of death for children in Los Angeles County in 2022. Drug overdose and homicide have been in competition with ‘motor vehicle collisions' for the top kid-killer spot over the last few years. Drowning, another preventable killer my wife is focused on eradicating, was the number three killer in 2021.In January, the hyperlocal newsletter Crosstown reported data from the Los Angeles Police Department that 2023 was the “deadliest year on the roads in at least a decade, with 337 fatalities.”More than half of these were pedestrians. In 2022, 160 pedestrians died from being struck by a motor vehicle. It's been getting worse for some time.If you're not already depressed, this might push you over the edge. Hit and runs are also climbing. In October of 2022, the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department published the “Leading Causes of Death and Mortality Rates (per 100,000) by Age Group” in Los Angeles County from January to June for 2019 to 2022. During these years, of those aged 0-17, 73 have been killed by motor vehicles. In 2022, it was the number one killer.Alarmed by the trend, former Mayor Eric Garcetti formulated a “Mobility Plan 2035” in 2015 that “incorporates ‘complete streets' principles and lays the policy foundation for how future generations of Angelenos interact with their streets.” This follows California state's 2008 Complete Streets Act (AB 1358), which requires local jurisdictions to “plan for a balanced, multimodal transportation network that meets the needs of all users of streets, roads, and highways, defined to include motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, children, persons with disabilities, seniors, movers of commercial goods, and users of public transportation, in a manner that is suitable to the rural, suburban or urban context.”The rise in traffic deaths reveals that the aspirational goals set in various levels of government often represent legal fictions—idealized plans that simplify complex issues, but don't always lead to action. These legal frameworks, while not intentionally misleading, can result in a disconnect between policy intentions and outcomes, promoting a status quo bias due to the complexities of change, systemic inertia, and established interests — including those of firefighters. But a group of citizen activists organized to bring action to the fiction and gain traction amidst the friction. They drew attention to the fact that although L.A. had laid out a progressive ‘complete streets' plan, they had only executed 5% since its inception nearly a decade ago. At that rate they calculated it would take 160 years to build a minimum network of safe streets. All the while hundreds upon thousands would die while the legal fiction would continued to paint a different picture. So, they devised Measure HLA, the Healthy Streets L.A. initiative, inspired by other cities to bring action to ‘complete streets' fiction. The measure states every time a street is resurfaced, any corresponding Network Mobility Plan improvements must be implemented. For example, if a street has been designated as a segment of a bike network and is due to be resurfaced, the city must install the protected bike lane (or other complete street infrastructure) needed to fulfill the city's Mobility Plan 2050. Common sense exceptions are included to ensure public works could still fix things like potholes, utility cuts, or emergency repairs. But installing 560 miles of pedestrian paths, 300 miles of enhanced transit lanes, 520 miles of bike lanes safe enough for an eight-year-old, 830 miles of neighborhood enhancements, and 800 miles of bike networks for all levels of cycling requires some sacrifices. Motorists will have to sacrifice space on roadways to accommodate these changes. In doing so many roads will be narrowed and speeds lowered thus sacrificing speed of vehicles. And this is where the firefighters come in. There's a common misperception among many firefighters and emergency responders that safe streets, that is slow streets, lead to slower response times resulting in people dying. The hundreds of people, including young people, they scrape off the pavement or extract from a car after being obliterated by a ton of metal charging at excessive speeds seem to be excluded from this calculus. It is true there was a time when speed bumps were added to slow speeding vehicles that also slowed first responders. But civil engineers and urban planners worked through these challenges and now speed cushions can be installed that permit fire trucks (and other large vehicles) to proceed through gaps in the speed bumps. There are also ways to design safe street networks in ways that allow speeding emergency vehicles to move quickly through road networks protected from or free of pedestrians and cyclists…and clogged traffic. In many cases, it's the same paths carved out of stalled traffic for buses.FIRST RESPONSE AND EMERGENCY OBJECTIONSThe Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) seemingly haven't gotten the memo from the Federal Highway Administration on how to calm traffic while not reducing response times. One LAFD Captain, Frank Lima, was quoted as saying “Firefighters are opposed to Measure HLA…[because] response times from 911 resources will increase…Every second in our profession means [life or death].” But Mr. Lima then exposes what is perhaps the true source of his opposition which is not related at all to his expertise or profession but likely a personal conviction.“It's going to hurt small businesses and it's going to take away parking spaces,” he said. “It's one of those projects that sounds good on paper, but when you put it in reality, it's going to have a negative impact.”He is right that legal fiction does sound good on paper, and on-street parking spaces may be taken away on some streets, but if done well other cities have shown small business improves as does property value. It turns out everybody wants to live on a safe and quiet street, expect maybe this LAFD Captain.Mr. Lima is also a member of the International Association of Firefighters and presumably the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City Local 112 (UFLAC) who claim they spent $100,000 fighting this measure. Their president, Freddy Escobar, said Measure HLA “is full of lies…all these confusing lanes, dangerous bike lanes, pedestrian medians, and all the chaos - and nobody is using 'em." If that was extreme enough in his attempt to scare voters, he added, “If we pass HLA we're going to see chaos all over the city.”Not to be out done, the president of the California Professional Firefighters, Brian Rice, also revealed his personal convictions while presumably speaking on behalf of all California firefighters stating,"I hate to tell you men and women, California - and Los Angeles in particular - this is a car community. You may not like it, but it is."He then took a shot at bus drivers and riders who are stuck in traffic today but will benefit from bus priority signaling and bus only lanes as part of the complete streets plan. He asked,"Do you really think you're going to see buses go faster than 12 miles an hour?"And then, he fully exposed his motivations for wanting to deny Angelinos safe streets. Dog whistling conservatives across L.A., he claimed the initiative came from “a small group of elite...Democratic Socialists.”It might seem unusual for firefighters to be so misaligned with most people they serve (the measure passed by a 2 to 1 margin) or for their personal convictions or biases to seemingly conflict with their egalitarian duty to serve all members of the community, but it's not.Firefighters are unique. They're the only profession that attracts people who need to be trained NOT to immediately run into a burning building. As one fire chief said to his trainees,“Risk a lot to save a lot. Risk a little to save a little. Risk nothing to save nothing. We're all here to help people... but you need to have your priorities straight: life safety first, incident stabilization second, and property conservation last.”These people must not only endure and survive extreme physical conditions, but they are also exposed to human pain and suffering, mutilations, and death. All of which require a healthy support network and relationships to maintain their mental health. This is why their training and work environment also includes indoctrination an institutional culture that instills comradeship, respect, and devotion to service — for each other and the communities they serve. But within any group of people each individual member shows up with their own implicit or explicit biases toward minority members of any community they may serve, be it class, race, ethnicity, gender, or apparently pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and those with opposing political views. How might these biases interfere with their duty to serve all community members?Much of our behavior is subtly influenced by unconscious biases, deep-seated preferences we're often unaware of. These hidden biases can significantly impact daily decisions and societal dynamics, especially in critical areas like healthcare, where they contribute to disparities in patient treatment and outcomes.Similarly, in the criminal justice system, implicit biases affect law enforcement actions, with studies indicating varying responses based on race. However, the connection between these unconscious biases and actual discriminatory behavior remains a topic of debate, with some research suggesting the link is weaker than previously thought, emphasizing the complexity of addressing such ingrained biases. One researcher embedded himself in a fire crew in a small town in the southern United States to explore these complex behaviors. To be accepted as ‘one of the guys' the researcher went through training and served on calls with the crew. It took weeks, but he eventually earned his insider status where he felt everyone was acting normally should he not be observing them. It wasn't pretty.AMIDST FLAMES OF PREJUDICE, A BROTHERHOOD IN THE BALANCEAs a member of a white crew serving a racially and ethnically diverse community, he indeed uncovered some alarming and explicit individual biases. In a banter of stories about various calls, he observed a trend in one-upmanship among story tellers. “Tall tales” is a form of bonding among groups of humans that have existed across time and culture. Each story becomes increasingly exaggerated and in the case of the culture of this group of firefighters, explicitly racist, sexist, and/or classist. One such crescendo culminated with this alarming tale (trigger warning, some nasty and disturbing language in here),“Green Village is the worst because you've got all those Mexicans who don't f*****g speak English. At least at Friendship Haven, you can say, ‘Listen, bro, I'm gonna call the f*****g cops,' and they scurry off. [He simulates running, while holding up pants] These f*****g Mexicans don't speak English, so they're a pain in the ass. Those Jose Cuervos think they are doctors. There was that one call at Green Village, where there was this woman. It was toned out [dispatched] as a cardiac arrest, but we got there and the woman was having a seizure.Anyway, it was me and Kelly and we pulled her out of the bed to this little spot on the floor between the bed and dresser and her two sons were like standing over her. One was flashing a light in her face, like a flashlight. And she was fat, obviously. And the other one was pulling her shirt down to cover up her fat, while yelling, “She dead. She dead.” The woman was fine. I walked out and called police on that f*****g Beaner. If I would have had a gun, I would have shot those two Speedy Gonzalezes.”In another story, a Black woman in a hijab arrived at a residence where the crew was cleaning up after a call. Laughing, one of the firefighters asked his crew, “Did you see what they were cooking? There were bones in that pot.” His colleague responded, “What was it? A cat? Rats? Hamsters?”Amidst the laughter another story was shared.“Remember we were at that fire last weekend, over in Africa, and that woman slapped the s**t out of that guy?” One of the Lieutenants replied how hilarious it was while stomping his foot performing a racist caricature and mimicking an African language saying “…she was yelling and really going off on him in Black.”Upon hearing this, the researcher reported, one of the firefighters laughed so hard he lost his breath. As the laughter subsided another firefighter said of the neighborhood they were serving, “Friendship Haven can burn down and I wouldn't give a f**k. F**k. That. Hellhole.”It's hard to read this and imagine why these bigoted firefighters bother even showing up to help these people. But according to the researcher, this is how a fraction of these “white, male, working-class firefighters cope with stress and forge solidarity” while most of the others passively laugh and follow along. He claims these individual beliefs don't interfere with their duty to serve because the one thing that would exclude a firefighter from the ‘brotherhood' is allowing a human to suffer or die — regardless of how they may personally feel about them. He said that while this Southern white “working-class, locally raised, politically conservative peer culture dominates the social space…prejudiced beliefs take a back seat to enacting excellence on the fireground.”He says because these extremely discriminatory words and actions are portrayed in private and only among other firefighters they entrust, and issued by those in command, there is little opportunity for disciplinary action. He also believes “it is a tall order to exorcise prejudice from individuals.”  The best remedy to counter these individual beliefs, the researcher writes, is to start by “educating staff about the populations they serve and teaching nonviolent approaches to conflict resolution.” He also believes “organizational incentives that encourage grassroots competition to provide optimal service or community engagement can stymie discriminatory behavior.”In the case of the LA firefighters, they are clearly more ethnically and racially diverse than those this researcher observed in the South, so attacks on minority races is unlikely happening in the open. And what discriminatory prejudices these L.A. firefighters do have are clearly not just private. After all, they just spent $100,000 to make them public.Should a social psychological researcher embed themselves in any number of these L.A. squads, I'm sure they'd reveal disparaging language there too. Their quasi-militaristic allegiance to the ‘brotherhood' is evidently forged in a shared disdain for ‘cyclists', ‘pedestrians', liberal ‘elite social democrats', and/or some ‘others' outside their tribe. As for those firefighters who may be partial to, or members of, these ‘other' tribes, and perhaps even chided for being one of ‘them', the group likely accepts them because even if they're a negatively branded a ‘liberal socialist' they'd still risk their life to save another crew member or community member.American firefighters are portrayed as heroes in America. Movies like Backdraft or television shows like 9-1-1 portray firefighters as tough, rugged, fearless public saviors. The heroic narrative can attract those seeking action, adventure, and camaraderie awash in a glamorous glow of danger. But perhaps society's hero worship can also insulate those with hateful and bigoted views from public scrutiny. They will perform heroic acts to society's benefit, but perhaps with a bit more education, less bravado, and more tolerance they could become better firefighters and heroes. One veteran of emergency services, fire marshal, and U.S. Marine Desert Storm war veteran, Daniel Byne, made a plea in 2007 to,“Take off the macho T-shirts. Take down the pictures and posters that paint our profession in an unrealistic light and encourage our firefighters to take unwarranted chances in the pursuit of living up to an unrealistic image.”He is echoing criticisms from a Swedish firefighter Dr. Stefan Svensson, a PhD in fire engineering. He says in many countries the ‘heroic deeds' many American firefighters are lauded for “would probably had led to inquiries, changes in training manuals, the dismissal of the fire fighter and probably even prosecution of the fire fighter for causing immediate danger to others.” Perhaps the bigoted attitudes may also. Curiously, some of these other countries happen to be social democracies like Sweden. After this country of nearly 10 million people instituted similar ‘complete streets' initiatives in 1997, their pedestrian deaths dropped from 134 in 1990 to 25 in 2020. Sweden and Norway have the smallest numbers of traffic related deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in the world, thanks to Vision Zero and ‘complete streets' initiatives.Sweden's Svensson's message for American firefighters is this: “Bravery and heroic deeds must result from knowledge, not from illusions.” Perhaps it's time more firefighters get educated on the negative effects of outwardly expressing hatred toward others, trust their fellow public service colleagues like city planners and engineers, and learn to operate their equipment on streets designed for all — even if that means learning it from people they disparage as ‘social democrats.' After all, as that fire chief in the South said, “We're all here to help people... but you need to have your priorities straight.” This is a public episode. Rumors regarding the whereabouts of Kate Middleton intensified with unconfirmed claims suggesting that the BBC has been instructed to be prepared for a significant announcement from the Royal Family in the near future. However, the broadcaster has not made any public statements to confirm such alerts.Viral posts on social media have fueled concerns about the royal family's well-being, particularly after some Twitter users erroneously pointed out a perceived change in the BBC's social media branding. The confusion stemmed from a tweet by user @FieldsLeaf, alleging that 'BBC UK' had altered its logo from red to black on Instagram, a change historically associated with significant events like the death of Queen Elizabeth II.However, it's important to note that the claim in the tweet is inaccurate. The BBC operates multiple social media accounts across various platforms, each with its distinct branding conventions. The main account, 'BBC,' typically features its logo on a black background, while its news accounts, such as 'BBC News,' use a red background—a standard branding practice maintained by the broadcaster for years.(new story)Kate Middleton appeared “happy and healthy” as she was spotted alongside Prince William doing some shopping near her Adelaide Cottage home, as per reports.Kate and WIlliam  were observed at one of their preferred farm shops on Saturday, located approximately a mile away from their residence within the Windsor Home Park grounds, according to an elated onlooker who spoke to The Sun.Curiously, there were no photos of thai reported sighting.  The Sun used images of Kate for their cover story but they were not from this appearance.A witness to the unphotographed sighting in an era where everyone has a cellphone told The Sun, “A witness at the farm shop in Windsor said: “After all the rumours that had been going round I was stunned to see them there.“Kate was out shopping with William and she looked happy and she looked well.“The kids weren't with them but it's such a good sign she was healthy enough to pop down to the shops.”Kate's floated return date is now April 17th, which is indeed “After Easter.”

Foundations of Amateur Radio So, the 19th of February 2024 came and went. As it was, my day started with the highest minimum that month, 27.5 degrees Celsius, that's the minimum overnight temperature. The maximum that day here in Perth, Western Australia was 42.3 degrees. The day before was the highest maximum for the month, 42.9. If you're not sure, that's over 109 in Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit's scale. That same day the Australian regulator, the ACMA, launched a new era in Amateur Radio. Moving from personal amateur licenses we legally became part of a class license regime. We have the option to hand our license back and get a refund, but the cautious side of me prevailed and I've not yet handed back my license, since it's currently the only proof that my callsign is valid, the one issued to me in December 2010. I contacted the ACMA to ask about this and was told that they were having display issues with their system and was sent an image showing both my callsigns and email address. I'm not saying that I don't trust the person sending this to me, but I'm fairly sure that "but your honour, it was in an email" isn't going to cut it if push comes to shove. Curiously my name appears to be missing, showing the word "Blank" instead. Their IT team has been working on displaying F-calls for weeks now. I mean, seriously, these were first issued in 2005. Do we really need to spell this out? The ACMA continues to actively encourage amateurs to hand in their license and points out that any delay in doing so will reduce the amount that may be due. It also points at Schedule 4, Part 2 subclause (7)(1)(d) of the Radiocommunications (Amateur Stations) Class Licence 2023, to assure me that my callsign is mine and mine alone, irrespective of what's in the register. It goes on to say that the letter they sent back in January, the one they had to resend, since they got my callsign details wrong, explained that I could hand back my license and that my ability to operate hinged on my qualification, not my callsign. Here's the rub. Let's say that I'm qualified and that the letter I have proves it. I am required to identify myself on-air, the regulations say so. This means that in order for me to claim that I am who I say I am, there needs to be a register with that callsign. Apparently I'm in the register, but nobody other than the regulator can prove that. One thing that appears to be missing is a solid understanding that the register of callsigns is used by the amateur community to determine if a callsign heard on-air is assigned or not. I mean, I could call myself VK6EEN and without the register who's to say that it's mine? It's not confidence inspiring to say the least. Then there's the register itself. There's an online component, which you can use to search for a callsign. As I said, mine isn't visible, neither is any other four letter F-call. As a test, I've been scrolling, one page at a time, for the past hour, to get to VK6F, starting at VK6A, to see if it shows up, but I'm not holding my breath. For some reason the developers who built this appear incapable of rendering a simple table in anything less than 36 seconds per page, so much so that Chrome thinks that the page has crashed and offers to kill it, every time. Funnily enough, if you extract the URL from within the page and copy it, you can download all 176 pages for VK6 callsigns in less time than it took me to write this sentence. Unsurprisingly, F-calls are not there. Did I mention that this software, released a month ago, is already using depreciated features in my current web browser, which came out a week before the new register went live? It gets better. If you actually want to manage your callsign, you need to create an account on the regulator's portal, called ACMA Assist. When you load the ACMA Assist URL and click the "Sign up or log in" button, 134 different URLs from all over the Internet are hit, across 34 different domains, including Facebook, Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Markmonitor, Monsido, several content, font, icon and javascript libraries, and plenty more. This is a Government website, requiring that I authenticate to it, and to do that, I'm required to provide more identity documents than the tax department needs and wait for it, authentication is outsourced to some random domain, so you're entering your details into a third-party service. You have the choice of using the Government identity provider, one that requires a mobile phone and an app, or use a Government owned company that prefers a mobile and a different app, but offers access via a website on yet another domain. Now it gets funky. If you pick "driver's license", you'll discover that everything that's on your license is information that the form wants. So anyone with a photo of your license can sign up and identify as you, like the chemist who required a photocopy of it so you could buy Sudafed for your debilitating hay fever, because instead, you might use it to create methamphetamine, or the nightclub that required it so you could enter the venue because of course they do, or the telecommunications company that provided access to your details during a recent hack. Just so we're clear here. I'm now required to validate my identity to access a callsign that is already in the database, already has my email address linked to it and is for an amateur license that I already have been in possession of and paid for since 2010. Never mind that I used to email the regulator to have them issue an invoice that I paid for via credit card, no authentication at all, and that was for a personal license, issued specifically to me. We'll also ignore that if you signed up with ACMA Assist a year ago, you don't need to validate, not then, not now. Speaking of email. The ACMA has just sent me one telling me that I can request and fill in a form and email or fax it to them to update my records instead. That's interesting, but what about the privacy implications of tracking by the worlds mega corporations on a Government site or even the security theatre for something that according to the regulator isn't even my permission to operate? I'm all for giving the regulator the benefit of doubt, but if this is the future of Amateur Radio Licensing in Australia, I'm beginning to wonder just which Wild West Orwellian landscape I stepped into and I'm asking myself is this the best that our limited tax payer dollars can achieve? If you want to see this for yourself, open up your browser, press F12 and have a look at the network connection tab while you visit the ACMA Assist portal. Finally, I have one question. Why are our so-called representative bodies, the WIA and RASA, not jumping up and down about this? Apparently, I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Introduction:  Dr Laura McHale (PsyD, CPsychol) is a consulting leadership psychologist, executive coach and writer specialising in Leader Development, Team Psychology, Communication and Organisational Culture, Laura is the author of the acclaimed book: Neuroscience for Organisational Communication:  A Guide for Communicators and Leaders. Podcast episode Summary:  This podcast explores and explains the impact of communication in organisational life employing the lens of Neuroscience and Psychology of Communication.  Topics covered include Gaslighting, Absentee Leaders, The use of Pronouns, Weasel Words and Communication Practices that undermine employees. Laura sheds a light on a discipline that is often unspoken. Points made across this Episode:  o    Laura can you share a bit about how you got to where you are today? Laura is now a Psychologist and in her mid-forties she made a radical decision to go back to school and take a doctorate in Leadership Psychology. Prior to this move Laura was working in major international investment banks as a Corporate Communications Specialist. In 2010 Deutse Bank moved her to Hong Kong to head up internal communications for the Asia Pacific Region. Laura loved her career working with International Banks & she was really curious about human behaviour at work and wanted to go deeper and in particular understand the mysterious process we call Leadership. o    There were a number of reasons that prompted Laura to study Psychology including several transformative experiences with psychotherapy,  She was curious about the way we frame and talk about work and the psychological injury experienced at work. o    What inspired you to write your book? The book happened organically. As part of Laura's Doctorate she had a required course on the Neuroscience of Leadership. Laura was fascinated by the discipline and had a sense it would become a big part of her intellectual life as well as her career. She noticed that nobody was talking about organisational communication and neuroscience and Laura wanted to close the gap with her book. o    What are the salient messages housed in your book that explain Neuroscience and Psychology at work? There is a natural interest in behavioural science. It is often hard to make the link about how the science can impact a leaders presence or choices in communication. There is a fundamental tension between the promotion strategies employed by internal communication teams and the prevention strategies they employ. In promotion strategies communicators are very assertive about the companies value proposition, what it offers and its unique differentiator's. A prevention strategy often results in very cautions communications, judicious and a little bit like politicians the communications are somewhat evasive. Whilst understandable it can be a slippery slope and sets off all kinds of triggers with employees. The tension between promotion strategies, a desire to be open & transparent and prevention strategies can be tricky to navigate. It is often a schizoid perspective where communicators are trying to toggle two different strategies. o    The Psychology of communication is also important for another reason. It is a very difficult time for communication specialists. The scope of the role in the last five years has changed dramatically. Corporate affairs, ESG and Government affairs are rolled up into the typical role of a communications department. This is leading to increased stress. If you add AI, chat gpt and other generative models can pose an existential threat to these groups and teams. The changing nature of the role of communication professionals is also one of the reasons Laura wrote her book to help make sense of the changing landscape. o    The Neuroscience or physiology of behaviour is a bit different. Insights into neuroscience can shed light on how and why we are showing up at work. Understanding rewards and threat centres in the brain, knowing how we use pronouns and its impact on others is fascinating and can be leveraged to be more effective in our communications. o    How do leaders and internal communications understand the paradigm from which they are operating? Important to understand the paradigm you are speaking or when you are moving too quickly between the two. Employees smell spin from a mile off. Internally it can be tricky for executives to  over relying on prevention strategies in their communication. There are a lot of traps Leaders can walk into, sometimes unintentionally or at least unconsciously. Knowing about human needs can really help leaders be effective communicators. o    What are some of those traps that Leaders walk into, maybe unintentionally? Some of it is structural. Pronoun use for example. I and We pronouns can signal more or less personal involvement in any given situation. Pronoun use can also reveal the many assumptions a leader is living. It can also give potent signals about who is in or out or who has a legitimate stake in an organisations success or failure. For example there are two different kinds of We, the inclusive or exclusive We. Senior Executives are often confused about which We they are in and how they are communicating exclusion or inclusion. This sends messages to the brain to trigger threat responses whether we are part of the in group or out group. If in the in group we get a dose of dopamine from the brain & if in the out group we can experience significant amounts of pain. I pronouns are also very interesting, some are cultural, and a really high proportion of I pronoun use can trigger a threat response in the brain. There is also an assumption in organisations that communication needs to be sanitised. This can infantilise employees and does an injustice to the complexities operating in an organisation. o    What is your advice to executives and leaders who erroneously practice sanitising their communications. One of the biggest pieces of advice Laura gives is to speak the truth. Laura references The Loughran-McDonald sentiment analysis research to explain why telling the truth can be so instructive. The two financial researchers used sentiment analysis or the use of positive versus negative sentiment and modal or weasel words. The research showed the lengths that organisations go to obfuscate the truth or to describe adverse events. In fact many of the negative words were couched in positive words that the messages were almost impossible to work out. Curiously the negative words used were very weak words or weasels like impairment, disappointing which suggested something was bad but it was never clear. The companies using negative words more creatively had negative stock performances. The researchers noted that companies use of words in their corporate communications could be used as a smart investment strategy.  o    How do Leaders manage the responsibility they hold to use language appropriately and not Gaslight or cause unintentional emotions at work? Organisations are like people using all sorts of defence mechanism sometimes very elaborate ones to avoid difficult and painful emotions. It important to understand why we are using these words, weasel words. It is because of an environment that lacks psychological safety, where we are not allowed to fail, or ask a question that might be interpreted as stupid. Is it an environment where people get punished for taking risks. Laura does not wish to come across as the language police she also uses weak modals and weasels in her communications too, because they have a purposeful use to indicate uncertainty. None of us can speak in with absolute clarity all of the time. o    The link to absentee leadership is for Laura an interesting link. She imagines that weak leaders, or those who are unable to fulfil the core functions of Leadership, would employ weasel words quite a bit more than strong leaders. o    In 2022 Laura read a “cracker jack” of an article by Robert Hogan who mentioned this phenomenon called absentee Leadership. Laura was struck by the idea that absentee leadership is an epidemic that nobody had ever named but that most of us have experienced in one form or another. It speaks to the idea of people who occupy an authority position of leadership and fail to fulfil its core functions. Laura refers to those functions as giving direction, protection, role orientation, conflict resolution and setting and establishing and protecting group norms. The interesting thing about absentee leadership is how common it is. It is reported 7 times more than any other destructive leadership behaviour. Because it is so common and can feel so mild it can go unnoticed and is experienced as neglect. o    Gaslighting surfaces when someone is at the mercy of an absent leader they can be blamed or they blame themselves for their inability to cope with whatever is occurring. One of the things that inspired Laura to write this article for the psychologist was because of her many conversations with coaching clients. Many of her clients were  being given feedback that they were having trouble managing ambiguity. Managing ambiguity is becoming a core competency. The issue with managing ambiguity is that almost everyone struggles with it. Laura knows this from Neuroscience, it is a known stress trigger. This is a universal biological phenomenon albeit some people can handle ambiguity better than others. Laura wanted to highlight the subjects of Gaslighting, Absentee Leadership and emotions at work in her article in the Psychologist, to shift attention from blaming people for their lack of this competency as a  subjective fault to an understanding of the human needs within all of us and our need for Leadership support. o    The fundamental attribution error is yet another trap that Leaders and executives can fall into. o    What are some of the Villains of Communication, Threats and Triggers you would like to see squashed? The rapid communication of bad news. Communicating bad news badly. If bad news is not communicated in an open and transparent manner it can infantilise an audience. This tendency is really prominent in politics where there seems to be a tolerance for misinformation and it is seeping into the fabric of organisations too. Laura is not trying to malign all politicians but recognises that politicians regularly protect themselves against the loss of power and influence and often engage in this form of communication. This perpetuates cynicism and mistrust that Laura hopes we do not want to dial that up in our organisations. o    The Corporate Communications Reset Workshop is a  new workshop and is really the greatest hits from her book. Her workshop helps corporate communications professional access more joy at work by reclaiming their mo-jo and about being  more strategic in their work, whilst being cognisant of the changing landscape and being able to fend off some of the threats posed by Chat GPT and other generative language models. A lot of comms people are closeted behavioural scientists and this workshop gives them a taste or a lot  taste for Psychology and Neuroscience understanding. Included in her workshop is the methodology called Structural Dynamics, the building blocks for how we communicate and don't. o    Structural Dynamics is a methodology created by David Kantor. It is David Kantor's theory of interpersonal communication dynamics. It is a very interesting theory to describe the patterns that emerge when teams are together. There are a few different levels to this theory and the ones that are most often used to explain team dynamics and patterns are what David describes as the action mode, the operating system and the communication domain. The least discussed is the last one called the Childhood Story, work made infamous now by Dr Sarah Hill and her work. o    Structural Dynamics at its essence gives people a vocabulary to describe  what's happening in a room & a roadmap for how to change those patterns to develop a more balanced behavioural repertoire.   Resources  a)       Neuroscience for Organisational Communication: A Guide for Communicators and Leaders by Dr. Laura McHale. b)        www.conduitconsultants.com c)       The Loughran-McDonald Master Dictionary Sentiment  Words list d)       David Kantor www.kantorinstruments.com e)       Ronald Heifetz, one of the world's foremost authorities on Leadership https://hbr.org/2002/06/a-survival-guide-for-leaders f)        Sarah Hill and her book Where did you learn to behave like that? g)       Corporate gaslighting, absentee leaders and the emotions of work – 07 November 2023, The British Psychological Society. h)       Robert Hogan: https://www.hoganassessments.com/research-project/absentee-leadership/

Mysterious “butterfly people” were seen by the residents of Joplin, Missouri during the 2011 F5 tornado that devastated the midwest. Curiously, these beings appeared at the perfect moment that some residents were sheltered from danger and miraculously survived. In this episode, Rob and John attempt to answer the questions: What happened in Joplin? Are the butterfly people real? What are the butterfly people? Did survivors of the Twister-esque tornado see butterfly people or angels during the storm? Was the massive, devastating tornado natural? Where did the tornado come from? With well over a hundred deaths and 1,000 injuries in Joplin, damage up to $7 billion, numerous homes destroyed, vehicles mangled, and commercial buildings flattened, the May storm was one of the largest tornado outbreaks on record. It affected the midwest and south, including Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, and more. In Joplin specifically, two thunderstorms merged to produce a “mega tornado.” Interestingly, the highest reports of people encountering “butterfly people” were from children. After an intense car accident, butterflies began appearing around 14-year-old Emily Huddleson. In the middle of a violent weather attack, 10-year-old Mason Lillard felt a hand placed on her shoulder—and it wasn't her cousin Lage, but a sight nobody would've believed if it weren't for all the other reports of “butterfly people” sightings going around town later. Rob Counts brings his investigative research into firsthand sightings and local legends. Then, John Vivanco shares his incredible remote viewing data that will shed light on the “butterfly people” phenomena and more. Strange, paranormal phenomena have been spotted before natural disasters struck in other cases, but this episode of Metaphysical reveals possibly the strangest one yet. I mean we do share a lot about our personal lives and past experiences, and we always try to be as authentic as possible, but if you're neurodivergent you're likely also very familiar with a little thing called “masking”. To coexist somewhat peaceably in a neurotypical world, many neurodivergents learn early on that they have to slip on a persona and play by certain rules, and over time those masks become almost second nature and it can even become difficult to remember where the mask ends and you begin. So for this episode we're doing something a little bit different. We want to show you our strange, little neurodivergent selves, as unmasked and unfiltered as possible; so instead of presenting you a typically structured episode where we'd instinctively mask, we've compiled a ton of clips with our more candid moments during the last two years that never made it into the episodes. Chapters 9-10 of 1 Samuel narrate the identification and inauguration of Israel's king Saul. Saul was a man of impressive height and charm, fulfilling the physical expectation of a monarch. But he was also a poor shepherd as he failed to find his father's lost animals. When he and his companion gave up on their search and turned for home, they -happen to- run into Samuel. Samuel was given the special revelation that Saul would be the man chosen to govern Israel. When he was alone with Saul, Samuel anointed him and shared a very specific prophecy of events that would lead to the Spirit of God coming upon Saul in power. Curiously in verse 9 of chapter 10 it says, -God gave him -Saul- another heart.- What are we to make of this statement-- Many jump to the conclusion that this means that the Lord regenerated Saul. What do you think-- Was Saul a child of God-- Why or why not-- How would you defend your claim-- Whatever change happened in Saul's life, in the end, his life was a complete disaster. How can one's doctrinal position regarding regeneration and perseverance cloud one's understanding of what God is doing in Saul's life----The events in this section reveal how God is sovereign over the details of our lives. He who notices the trail of the sparrow, ordains the direction of milk-cows, and causes donkeys to stray, has an even greater interest in His beloved children. In fact, our very steps are ordered by Him -Prov 16-9, 20-24-. There is no such thing as -happenstance-- we may not know where the next hour will carry us, but God knows the end from the beginning because He defines it- What a comfort to know that He holds our future-

Jennifer Brandel is a co-founder of Hearken, which she'll talk about extensively today, but she's also behind Zebra's Unite, Civic Exchange Chicago, Democracy SOS and WBEZ Chicago's Curious City. She joins Carrie Fox for a conversation on approaching the most challenging problems with an open and curious perspective in this rebroadcast from season 7. She is a serial entrepreneur and innovator who works between industries to address how to design better systems for listening, responding, and evolving with their stakeholders. She is a co-founder of Hearken, which she'll talk about extensively today, but she's also behind Zebra's Unite, Civic Exchange Chicago, Democracy SOS and WBEZ Chicago's Curious City. Now that we have her bona fides out of the way, here's the real reason Jennifer is special to us: there are so few people able to clearly create an environment that makes the complicated approachable, and the messiest of problems solvable. Even the problems we face today, problems many believe to be impossible.  “We're coming to a moment in which many more people are recognizing that collaborations and the interdependencies of sectors, of organizations, even departments within a company need to be in better and closer communication with one another. And the more we divide and silo ourselves and separate the work, it's at our peril. We're missing insights. We're missing opportunities to leverage one another's work. We're being less efficient. All of these things translate into the workplace of making our lives harder and also making us  keep doing things the same way over and over again, rather than evolving at the speed at which we could be.”How does she approach these intractable problems at Hearken? Curiously. She's an enthusiastic observer with inexhaustible energy to face hard things and try to make them better. If you've never heard of Jennifer or her work, we're thrilled and honored to be able to present her worldview to you on this show. Thank you to Jennifer for joining us on the show this week. Robert Connolly is one of Australia's great modern directors, having exploded onto the film scene some twenty years ago with The Bank, which was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the AFI awards, which he swiftly followed up with an impressive body of work that includes Paper Planes, The Turning, Balibo, Blueback, and the 2021 adaptation of Jane Harper's best seller, The Dry.That film, which featured Eric Bana as Detective Aaron Falk, set the box office afire in 2021 alongside High Ground and Penguin Bloom, with the trio making Australian film history as the first time that three Aussie flicks topped the local box office. Given the success of The Dry, it made sense that Connolly and Bana would return to Jane Harper's Falk series with the second novel, Force of Nature. Where The Dry focused on a murder mystery in the middle of nowhere, Force of Nature takes Detective Falk to the Grampians to try and find missing business woman Alice (Anna Torv). Alice did not return with her colleagues (Deborra-Lee Furness, Robin McLeavy, Sisi Stringer, Lucy Ansell) after a hiking retreat, raising suspicion and concern. With heavy rains on the way, time is of the essence to find Alice before it's too late. While Force of Nature operates in the thriller genre, with Connolly harkening back to The Bank with a subplot about manipulative financial institutions, it is better approached as a character study of people under pressure. Falk's return to the Grampians sees him recalling his youth when his mother also went missing in the same area, and it's here that Force of Nature lingers into an examination of what family means in difficult times. Eric Bana has found a character he can comfortably slip into with Detective Aaron Falk, a figure who sits alongside Detective Jay Swan and Jack Irish as a compelling investigator getting to the bottom of a mystery. It helps that Bana is comfortably supported by a reliable cast, including the always great Anna Torv who owns the film, the welcome presence of Robin McLeavy who gives a subdued and powerful performance, and solid performances from newcomers Sisi Stringer and Lucy Ansell.Curiously, even though I've been interviewing Australian filmmakers for almost a decade now, this is the first time I've had a chat with Robert Connolly. I'd previously aimed to catch up with him on the media trail for The Dry or Blueback, but circumstances meant that this was our first time chatting. As I joined the Zoom meeting, Robert immediately noticed the vast array of blurays and DVDs that sit behind me, pointing out the Agnes Varda Criterion Collection. Our conversation starts there, and ferrets through different avenues of discussion, weaving in and out about Robert's work as a filmmaker, what it means to support emerging talent in the way he does as an executive producer with films like Alena Lodkina's Petrol, Sari Braithwaite's Because We Have Each Other, and Jub Clerc's Sweet As, before we settle on discussing why Force of Nature is the hardest shoot he's embarked on yet.Force of Nature launches in Australian cinemas from 8 February 2024, and if there's one reason to see it on the big screen, it's to become overwhelmed by Andrew Commis' immersive cinematography. No doubt if this one does well that we'll see Robert adapting the third and final Falk book, Exiles, down the line.If you like what we do here at The Curb, then make sure to listen to other interviews at TheCurb.com.au, and help keep The Curb independent by joining our Patreon from as little as $1 a month at Patreon.com/thecurbau. St. Paul Tells Us: The Church is the Mystery of the Body of Christ. We are Members of His Body. What Does That Mean for Our Own Spirituality? Go out into the whole world. The first reading tells us of Saul going out in the world to capture Jews believing in Jesus. He is very aggressive in his work. He hunts down people belonging to this new way. We see Heaven send a warning to the heart of one who is trying to root out error. Curiously, we see Saul who is so concerned to protect the faith of Israel. However, he misses the point! It is the God who Saul follows Who ends up correcting him. Saul went out in the world on this mission. Much like the Apostles went out in the world on their mission. But their missions were indeed different. Hear more within the Homily! On this day, we celebrate the conversion of Saul. Saul forever changes on this day. He is struck down. The light overwhelms Saul. Struck down by light. Saul does not feel a blow. He is struck down be a light that is so beautiful, he cannot stand. He is overwhelmed. Saul becomes blind. Out of the light comes The Voice of the Lord. Saul tries to serve the Lord before this encounter. Yet, he does not recognize Him . . . he does not recognize the Lord. A heart, so faithful to the Lord, needs to learn the sound of the Lord's voice. Hear more about this lesson for us! I Am Jesus, Whom you persecute. Understand what happens! Jesus identifies Himself with His Church. Note! Saul is not out to chain Jesus! He is out to persecute His followers . . . the Church! Why is that important? Hear more in the Homily! St. Paul teaches us a lesson! In persecuting the Church, you persecute and reject Jesus. As intensive as Saul's relationship with Jesus is, it is not merely private. We must understand that for our own spirituality. Listen to more within the media. St. Paul Tells Us: The Church is the Mystery of the Body of Christ. We are Members of His Body. BEEHIVE STREET, NUMBER 7The garden of the house at Beehive Street Number 7 was surrounded by a wall and closed with a gate. One day the owners, with their two children, decided to coat the inside of the wall with biscuits, honey, and jam in layers, as if they were bricks and cement; some of it melted but, pressed down, the coating was done. What a strange idea! But it was spring and the bees sucked the sweet jam like pollen from the flowers. The honey dripping from the wall reached the flowers, transforming them into sweets, the small stones of the path became colorful confetti. Curiously, the rain couldn't reach the lawn because it remained suspended like strands of strawberry jelly. The homeowners, along with their two children, were amazed and didn't know what to think. It really seemed like magic, okay they were a bit strange, but this was truly a mystery, the mother with a very long braid to sweep the ground, the father with a pair of mustaches that looked like two wings to cut the air, and the children who went to school dressed so "ridiculously" that all the other kids made fun of them. The news about the candy garden had spread in the air and by now everyone was talking about it. The birds perched on the wall fed on sweets, the butterflies became sugar flowers themselves, and the lizards lay in the sun with full bellies. On a warm summer evening, the garden was filled with fluttering fireflies like fairies with luminous wands. A big party had begun, attracting all the children and young people of the village. Entering the garden, everything was incredibly surprising and so good to eat that they didn't stop until there wasn't a crumb of sweetness left. After that fantastic night no more sweets were found to eat, but the magic remained and so in the air a great joy lingered. The garden appeared greener and more lush than before, with butterflies of every color landing on the flowers. The following morning, upon waking, the young parents thought of removing the garden wall. So all the children and little animals could freely come in to play with their two children, who no longer appeared strange in their eyes, but very charming playmates."What a miracle!!!"__________________________________________________You can read or listen to this Story Under The Stars in: Italian — English — Spanish — French — Japanese — Chinese —Request your language and we will do our best to accommodate you!The translation from Italian (the original language) to other languages, and the reading of the stories in all these languages, is not magic but the work of Artificial Intelligence — which perhaps is a bit magical... The city of Ephesus was the third largest in the Roman Empire. It was a major commercial port on the Aegean Sea and home to many artisans, beautiful architecture, as well as the capital and religious center of Asia Minor. At the center of life in Ephesus was the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It brought in much wealth, tourism, and renown for Ephesus. After three years of ministry there, Paul was about to move on when a chaotic event happened. The Gospel was having such a profound affect on people's lives that the greater culture of Ephesus was feeling it. As people began following Jesus, they naturally became less interested in Artemis, and the craftsmen who profited from the sale of shrines and other goods surrounding the worship of Artemis began to feel the effects in their pocketbooks. This lead to a near riot that required the mayor of Ephesus (a city of 250,000 at the time) to step in and calm things down. Curiously, he knew the followers of Jesus not for their antagonism toward Artemis, but evidently for their love of Jesus. We're sent out with good news that truly changes lives and must be known by who we're for, not what we're against.

The School of Divine Mysteries - The Mahdi Has Appeared

In this episode we embark on a captivating journey into the heart of prayer, a universal form of communication with the Divine shared across all religions. As is our custom, we turn to the scriptures of Muslims, Christians, and Jews to uncover the authentic method and profound significance behind this sacred practice. While the outward expressions of prayer may vary, a common thread emerges—the act of prostration, of placing one's face upon the ground. This posture is not only found in different variations within all three faiths, but it is also mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. We encounter numerous passages where prophets humbly fall to their faces in prayer, whether before the Divine or in the presence of an angel. Curiously, many contemporary Muslims view prostration before a creation as inappropriate. Yet, delving into the stories within the Quran, we unearth the key to unraveling this enigma. One pivotal moment arises when God commands the angels to prostrate before Adam, an act that Iblis defiantly rejects in favor of his own form of worship. At this juncture, God makes it unequivocally clear that this is the manner in which He desires to be worshiped—through the being in whom He breathed His own spirit. Can we now reexamine Islamic prayer through this illuminating lens? Join us in this episode, where we traverse the intricate landscapes of prayer. Together, we contemplate the profound implications of this sacred practice across faiths and seek to deepen our understanding of its true essence. Stay tuned for an episode that promises to challenge perceptions and foster a deeper connection to the Divine.

Curiously, Cerasi had asked a different painter named Annibale Caracci to paint the altarpiece of the chapel, which is executed in stark contrast to Caravaggio's style.

Among the invitations I received to compose new pieces was one from clarinetist Keith Wilson, who was president of the College Band Directors National Association, for a work to be played at the organization's national convention.“I hesitated for a moment,” Copland continued, “but accepted when I was told that the piece would be bought sight unseen by at least two hundred bands!”Emblems premiered in Tempe, Arizona, on today's date in 1964, performed by the USC Band, conducted by William Schaefer. Michigan Court Throws Out 14th Amendment Case Keeping Trump on Ballot

In a recent development witnessed in Michigan, the state court of appeals has given its ruling on one of many ongoing cases relating to the potential candidacy of a past president in the upcoming 2024 ballot. The issue under scrutiny was an attempt to exclude this former president from the 2024 ballot—reasoning being his supposed involvement in the unsettling incident at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021. Critics argued this potentially made him unfit for candidacy as per the 'insurrection' clause of the 14th Amendment. Going against this, the Michigan court dismissed the challenge, affirming two prior lower court decisions. The court's ruling, a unanimous 3-0, came with the assertion that, under the Michigan state law, selections for primary ballot lie with the political parties and individual candidates themselves. Candidates' eligibility for inclusion in the state's presidential ballots is a matter beyond the court's jurisdiction, the panel of three judges clarified. It's important to underline that no official charges of 'insurrection' have been filed against the ex-president nor has any conviction been made. Historically, the 14th Amendment's specific clause has only been evoked several times—most of which occured in the period following the Civil War. It is anticipated that one from the group of lawsuits challenging his inclusion will eventually be elevated to U.S. Supreme Court for judgment. Curiously, the Supreme Court has yet to pass any ruling on cases regarding the insurrection clause.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

LONG PAUSE Take a deep breath and snuggle up so you're cozy and comfy. LONG PAUSE Now, just allow your body to let go, to completely melt into your bed in total relaxation. LONG PAUSE As you relax, your mind and body find that space where you can  just be… and it feels wonderful. LONG PAUSE Imagine standing  on the black and white  marble floor  of a mysterious  and magical library. PAUSE And in the library are countless books– floor after floor of books– as high as you can see. PAUSE Pockets of sun stream through the library, illuminating hidden collections of ancient books. The books pique your interest with their secrets of life and secrets of the past. PAUSE As you stroll through the shelves, titles of  thousands of  leather-bound  books reveal themselves, beckoning you to  take a closer look. PAUSE After a few moments of combing the stacks, an elevator with an iron door appears, and safely, you step into it.   PAUSE Inside the elevator you're struck by its beauty– all brass and white marble with no buttons to push for floors; the elevator just knows where to take you. PAUSE The elevator stops on a floor, and the doors open. Curiously, you exit and begin perusing the stacks, eager to learn what wisdom they hold.   PAUSE Walking through the shelves of books, a light energy buzzes in you, the energy of learning  fills your soul. PAUSE A thick, brown leather book with gold lettering  and yellow, dusty pages calls to you,  and as you reach for it, the book magically lifts off the shelf and opens on a table  where you can read it. PAUSE The yellowy pages hold elaborate calligraphy with vivid color images  of royalty and faeries and everyday men from the sixteenth century.. PAUSE Now, imagine the images spring from the pages and holographic characters begin talking in Olde English right in front of you. PAUSE Magically, you understand everything: two sets of lovers quarrel, a king complains about his daughter, and a group of everyday men try to put on a play that is so bad, you have to laugh. Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream comes to life before your eyes. PAUSE After a few moments,  the images dissolve  back into the book,  and another book flies off the shelf  to you. PAUSE Before your eyes, Galileo rises, telescope in hand, as he gazes at the stars. PAUSE Galileo is silent at first, looking deep into the cosmos that unfolds around you with twinkling stars and  swirling galaxies. PAUSE You see exactly what Galileo sees: the full moon shining, Venus aglow,  and Jupiter with its moons. They all light up before you. PAUSE Then, Galileo puts down his  telescope and feverishly  scribbles something in a notebook. PAUSE Fascinated by his every move, you try to read Galileo's notes and understand his calculations.  PAUSE Then something tells you sit back and breathe,  and while breathing, you absorb Galileo's knowledge naturally like you were given a new lens  to see the world. PAUSE The pages close,  and the astronomer disappears back into the magical book, leaving you with a joy from learning. PAUSE As you walk to the elevator, you feel your soul collecting the knowledge from all the texts, all the books in the library. PAUSE The downloads come  quickly and gently and stir within you a deep connection to the past. PAUSE

Where are we? and Why are we here? In so doing, it provides a much-needed ethical philosophy to guide mankind - and a personal methodology to improve our lives.BioI received Bachelor of Science and Master degrees in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. I spent 16 years designing and managing flight control systems, avionics and cockpits for The Boeing Company. I then joined the US Government's Senior Executive Service where I spent nine years in various director positions for the US Army and NASA research and development organizations. For the last 16 years of my business career I was the CEO of Cobham Defense Electronic Systems Corp, a company I founded and grew into the world's leading defense microwave corporation, which at my retirement had a billion dollars in annual sales and over 3500 employees. However, throughout my business career I spent my spare time seeking answers to questions like: who was I, where was I, and why was I here. I studied all the great religions in an attempt to learn the nature of their origin and their founding principles. Philosophy seemed like a fertile source of wisdom so I started in the West with the ancient Greeks like Plato and Pythagoras and worked my way up to Emerson. I then studied Eastern philosophies, which offered excellent insights. Curiously, it seemed the older the philosophy the more enlightened it was. Mainstream science was part of my education so I was exposed to those tenets early in life and often. But science focuses on the physical world and I figured if the source of the physical world is spiritual, then finding reality's truths without considering its spiritual aspects would be a futile effort. I concluded that if religion, science and philosophy could not construct a rational view of reality, then the answers needed to come from elsewhere. I found that for centuries psychics, mediums, channels, remote viewers, near-death experiencers, etc., had been offering a fascinating and consistent perspective on the spiritual world from first-hand experiences, and usually by highly reliable sources. But like any source, verifying the reliability of ESP reports was paramount. After sifting through reams of data, a consistent pattern of potential truth began to emerge that separated itself from the rest of the information. After retiring from the business world I wrote The Endless Journey and for two years I hosted The Common Sense Spirituality Show, which was a weekly Internet radio program, where I was exposed to a group of fascinating people. I also did a weekly podcast called Aspects of Spirituality, and hosted the Sanibel Metaphysical Meetup Group. After a lifetime of study not only did the multitude of disparate information begin to make sense, it turned out to be a truly good news story. I always had the feeling that truth would be positive, but the answers I found were far beyond my wildest dreams.Amazon link https://tinyurl.com/3rwvhfbehttps://davidgaggin.com/https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

Are you fully aware of just how vital speech in noise testing is in the hearing healthcare field? Let us unravel this topic in our latest episode featuring Dr. Douglas L. Beck. We shed light on the critical importance of determining a person's ability to understand speech amidst noise, an often overlooked aspect in audiology due to time limitations and reimbursement issues. Yet, these tests are pivotal for determining the effectiveness of aural rehabilitation and the fitting of hearing aids.Curiously, there's a prevalent challenge where patients' hearing is deemed 'normal,' yet they grapple with understanding speech in noisy environments. Dr. Beck and Dr. Delfino share their insights on this predicament, discussing the value of speech in noise scores as a measure of auditory ability. We propose the Beck-Benitez Two-Minute Speech in Noise Test, an accessible tool that can help in these scenarios. The conversation also ventures into the area of verification and validation measures in clinical practice. Despite their crucial role in successful hearing aid fittings, they often remain unimplemented due to lack of awareness. It's our plea to fellow professionals to prioritize speech in noise testing for better patient outcomes. Support the showConnect with the Hearing Matters Podcast TeamEmail: hearingmatterspodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @hearing_matters_podcast Twitter: @hearing_mattasFacebook: Hearing Matters Podcast

Attack the roles that are easy to get, make your name, and once you've made a mark, tell your agent, Hey, give me some opportunities that I can use to stretch myself creatively.Actor and Director Maximilian Carlo Martini was born in New York. His father was a Roman sculptor and Doctor of Philosophy and Phenomenology, and his mother was a law enforcement officer in Texas. Curiously enough, Max Martini's trajectory in Hollywood was strongly influenced by both parents, his father instilling curiosity for all things creative, and his mother inspiring him for law enforcement and military roles, in which he made his name on the big screen. A few frustrating experiences as a young actor got Max coming in and out of acting, so he decided to focus on his love for fine arts and attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where he received his BFA in painting and sculpture. After college, although he was working on movies and TV, he wasn't emotionally invested in becoming a successful actor. With that mindset, he disdainfully attended a casting and landed his first massive role in the movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, and James Wood, directed by Robert Zemeckis. Max starred in Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy, David Mamet's "Red Belt," Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim," and Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips," and the TV series "The Purge," to name some titles of his extensive career. He is also heavily involved in charitable work benefiting veterans and works closely with Warriors Heart Addiction and PTSD Treatment Center and the Special Operations Charity Network.Throughout this episode, you'll hear about Max's upbringing and relationship with acting, which initially had several ups and downs. You'll also hear how identifying his castability catapulted Max's career and his thoughts on self-tapes, AI, and negative feedback. In addition, Max shares valuable tips on how to own a room during auditions, how he would approach the industry if he were a young actor today, and much more.Tune in to Episode 93 of Hollywood Dream Maker and get Max's precious insight on how to make your mark in Hollywood. SEASON 2 EPISODE 68: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) BULLETIN: The District of Columbia Court of Appeals Friday afternoon halted Judge Chutkan's gag order against Trump for at least the next 17 days. Rather than deal with it on an emergency basis, it scheduled the first in-person hearing for NOVEMBER 20. The members of the three-judge panel consisting of two judges appointed by Obama and one appointed by Biden should be impeached and disbarred because they actually fell for not just a pathetically weak 1st Amendment excuse but also for a series of arguments based on the delusions-of-grandeur, megalomaniacal premise that this madman Trump believes a 100,000,000 Americans are somehow being deprived of their right to hear him because a judge had ruled no, Trump was not allowed to threaten the judge and the court officials and the prosecutors and not allowed to try to convince his cultists to try to kill them. He had already been given – BY the Judge who issued the gag order – the right to continue to insanely claim that the prosecution of his attempt to overthrow the government and foment violent revolution in this country and install an authoritarian regime with him as its permanent dictator was actually a political vendetta personally ordered by the President of the United States. All she wanted to stop was the continued attempt by Trump to use the social media site he OWNS and the propaganda video networks that make their only money by platforming him and the fascist rallies he stages to say it in just the right way to get somebody to KILL special counsel Jack Smith and to KILL judge Tanya Chutkan and to call in bomb threats to the court room and to doxx the jurors, the way he got hundreds of his cultists to attack the Capitol on January 6 and the way he doxxed Obama and one of his cultists went to Obama's neighborhood and hunted him, with the ultimate goal being obvious and evil: to institutionalize political violence and turn it into the determinative factor in how this country is not governered but RULED. Donald Trump is a terrorist. A. TERRORIST. And he has been using terrorism by proxy to destroy the laws and rules of this country, without interruption by the law or the courts for fully EIGHT years now. And when the justice system FINALLY stands up on its feet and the courts FINALLY stand up on their feet and recognize that after ALL of our other institutions have utterly failed and ALL of our leaders have failed to protect the nation against domestic terrorism in the form of Trump and his family and his enablers, when SOMEBODY finally BEGINS to do SOMETHING about it, this DC Appeals court say well, no, maybe the legal system of this country has been bending over backwards to protect the rights of this man who would destroy it and KILL anybody in it he doesn't like, but we don't see that in bending over backwards it has yet severed its own SPINE yet, so we're going to grant an “administrative stay” until at least November 20th to prove that we're great legal scholars and we're giving Trump every opportunity to get Jack Smith or Merrick Garland killed and why, yes, if there HAD been some sort of legal case against Osama Bin Laden before us in the summer of 2001 we would have delayed the injunction against him for two weeks because it's FAR more important to give people bent on destroying the United States every last ounce of their rights, than it is to protect the LAWS of this country or the JUDGES of this country or the REPRESENTATIVE FORM OF GOVERNMENT of this country itself. (17:48) The rest of this edition of the podcast is a repeat of Friday's 67th episode and if you've heard it there is no reason to listen again after this point.  SPECIAL COMMENT: Dementia J. Trump's lawyers last night filed a 35-page document to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, one or two paragraphs of which asks that court to BAR Judge Tanya Chutkan from reinstating the gag order on him. The rest of it is about how wonderful he is and how much he leads in the primary polls and it sounds like the dialogue they gave Rita Moreno in the last scene of the Jack Nicholson movie “Carnal Knowledge.”  From the first (!) page: “President Trump's uniquely powerful voice has been a fixtue of American political discourse for eight years, and central to the American fabric for decades.” Well, true, like car alarms. Or Herpes. From Item 4, on Page 11: "The Gag Order violates the rights of tens of millions of Americans to receive President Trump's speech: A restriction on President Trump's speech inflicts a reciprocal injury on the rights of over 100 million Americans who listen to him…" Listen to him bout how big and strong he is and how he is better, more beautiful, more powerful, more perfect, more strong, more masculine, more extraordinary, more virile, more domineering, more irresistible and more up in the air and I may have added a little something to the text there. More importantly, but less entertainingly, Judge Chutkan hits the gas, Judge Engoron hits the roof, Judge Cannon does NOT hit the pause button. Chutkan sent a not so subtle sign to the Trump Cult that the Subversion trial will start as planned 123 days from now, and Jack Smith let Cannon know that Trump was playing her like a two dollar banjo. Also, here in New York, the FBI searched the home of the Mayor's top campaign fundraiser and all of a sudden there is a money scandal involving her, him, a construction company, the nation of Turkey, donors who didn't donate, and don't blame me, I voted for the Garbage Commissioner Lady. And back in DC, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene and Chip Roy in a three-way… war of words. It began with a post by Roy, explaining why he moved to stop the vote to censure Representative Tlaib. Then Barney Rubble sub-tweeted him: “You voted to kick me out of the freedom caucus, but keep CNN wannabe Ken Buck and vaping groping Lauren Boebert…” to which Roy replied “Tell her to go-chase so-called Jewish space lasers if she wants to spend time on that sort of thing.” And Greene responded “Oh shut up Colonel Sanders” and predicted that this would all end with him reciting “powdered wig soliloquies as Americans are marched to the firing squads”and no, I don't get the reference either. Curiously silent through all this was Vaping Groping Lauren Boebert. Sources say she's simply sitting there quietly, trying to get a grip on the situation.  B-Block (40:19) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD (26:03) Dean Phillips, the Harlan Crow-funded "Democrat" challenging Biden, may have a bigger problem even than Crow. Fox is equally-opportunity hate: Jesse Watters gets suspended for threatening Arab Americans; Mark Levin lies about Wolf Blitzer's grandparents and denies they died in the holocaust. And after an ex-NHL player dies from taking a skate to his neck, how could an NHL team glorify one of their players nearly cutting another player with EACH of his skates? C-Block (49:21) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: There is boredom, there is paranoia, there is fantasy, there is detective fiction, there is self-satirization. This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Thursday, October 5th, 2023. Redballoon Not so long ago, the American dream was alive and well. Employees who worked hard were rewarded, and employers looked for people who could do the job, not for people who had the right political views. RedBalloon.work is a job site designed to get us back to what made American businesses successful: free speech, hard work, and having fun. If you are a free speech employer who wants to hire employees who focus on their work and not identity politics, then post a job on RedBalloon. If you are an employee who is being censored at work or is being forced to comply with the current zeitgeist, post your resume on RedBalloon and look for a new job. redballoon.work, the job site where free speech is still alive! www.redballoon.work https://www.breitbart.com/environment/2023/10/03/the-guardian-climate-change-has-made-rainstorms-20-wetter/ The Guardian: Climate Change Has Made Rainstorms ‘20% Wetter’ The UK-based Guardian newspaper has made the remarkable assertion that rainstorms are now 20 percent “wetter” than they used to be, thanks to climate change. New York City’s recent storm and accompanying flooding show the “unmistakable influence of the climate crisis,” the Guardian contended Monday, warning the city may not be “prepared for severe climate shocks.” The type of storm seen on Friday “is now 10-20% wetter than it would have been in the previous century, because of climate change,” the Guardian alleged, citing a new “rapid attribution study.” The Guardian said that such a pounding rainfall is “a symptom of a warming planet” because a hotter atmosphere is “able to hold more moisture.” Curiously, at this time last year, the Guardian declared that droughts are “at least 20 times more likely” than without “human-caused global heating.” In Monday’s article, the newspaper cited climate expert Tommaso Alberti, who said the rainstorm that hit New York was predictable and “aligns with climate change projections.” Human-driven climate change is the “primary driver” of major storms, which underscores “the urgent need for climate mitigation and adaptation efforts,” Alberti argued. Michael Mann, who invented the thoroughly debunked hockey stick graph and has falsely presented himself as a Nobel Prizewinner, agreed that the New York storm was clearly attributable to global warming. “New York is experiencing a very clear increase in these extreme – more than 2in per hour – rainfall events, and that’s clearly tied to a warming atmosphere,” he said. Rohit Aggarwala, the New York City commissioner of environmental protection, has also blamed the city’s reprehensible response to the storm on climate change, a convenient, if mendacious, dog-ate-my-homework excuse. “The sad reality is our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can respond,” he said. Daniel Zarrilli, the former chief climate policy adviser to New York City, uttered similar lamentations. “It’s clear that our cities and our aging infrastructure were built for a climate that no longer exists, particularly as a warmed atmosphere holds and releases more water,” he said. Reuters joined in the climate change blame game as well, suggesting that New York City’s flooding is just part of the “new normal” ushered in by global warming. https://thepostmillennial.com/trudeaus-internet-censorship-plan-kicks-off-with-government-operated-streaming-registry?utm_campaign=64487 Trudeau's internet censorship plan kicks off with government-operated streaming registry Friday's announcement from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) that online streaming services in Canada must register with the government agency has sent a chill throughout independent media. Critics say it is the beginning of a broad registry of all online news media, even if the CRTC is currently maintaining that a $10 million threshold exists for broadcasters before they must register. Previous CRTC vice-chairman and former editor of the Calgary Herald posted Monday on X: "Essentially and eventually, @crtceng intends to regulate everything on the Internet pretty much the way it regulates TV, radio and cable. Say g'bye to a free and open internet in Canada." Noted journalist Glenn Greenwald posted on X: "The Canadian government, armed with one of the world's most repressive online censorship schemes, announces that all "online streaming services that offer podcasts" must formally register with the government to permit regulatory controls." In a news release, the CRTC announced that it is setting out which online streaming services need to provide information about their activities in Canada. Online streaming services that operate in Canada, offer broadcasting content, and earn $10 million or more in annual revenues will need to complete a registration form by November 28, 2023." The declaration is part of the Trudeau government's Online Streaming Act, or Bill C-11, which was called a "dangerous first step towards government control of the internet" by Justice Centre for Constitution Freedoms President John Carpay, who wrote that "In the long run, the CRTC could end up regulating much of the content posted on major social media, even where the content is generated or uploaded by religious, political, and charitable non-profits." However, reading further down in the news release, the CRTC uses ambiguous language and apparently contradicts its own guidelines by stating, "online services that offer podcasts must register; however, individuals who use social media to share podcasts do not." The CRTC has previously stated that: "individuals that host podcasts on their own websites or make them available on a subscription service platform other than a social media service are not explicitly excluded from the Broadcasting Act under subsection 2(2.1)" University of Ottawa law professor Michael Geist was quick to comprehensively comment on the CRTC announcement in an essay. Geist suggested the government's plans are "not as bad as critics would suggest, but not nearly as benign as the CRTC would have you believe." But Geist says the real danger of the CRTC's announcement is that it is "the thin edge of the wedge with the registration requirement being the first step toward a far broader regulatory framework." "In fact, the rationale for the CRTC to include many of the services is that without such information it is not well positioned to regulate. This creates an obvious contradiction: the Commission claims that the registration requirement is de minimis requiring the disclosure of only limited information but then also argues that such information is important to future decision making on compliance with the Broadcasting Act objectives," he writes. The CRTC hints that a broad registry is in the works: that "exempting online undertakings that provide news services from the requirement to register would prevent the Commission from having an adequate understanding of the players providing such services. Without information about the online broadcasting undertakings involved in the Canadian broadcasting system, it would be much harder for the Commission to develop policies aimed at implementing the above-noted policy objectives of the Broadcasting Act and conform to the proposed direction." The CRTC says "[a] third consultation is ongoing. It considers contributions traditional broadcasters and online streaming services will need to make to support Canadian and Indigenous content. The CRTC will hold a three-week public proceeding starting on November 20, 2023, and will hear from 129 intervenors representing a broad range of interests." https://www.foxnews.com/world/swiss-writer-called-journalist-fat-lesbian-sentenced-60-days-prison-lgbtq-groups-applaud-decision Swiss writer who called journalist 'fat lesbian' sentenced to 60 days in prison, LGBTQ groups applaud decision A court in Switzerland sentenced a writer and commentator to 60 days in jail for calling a journalist a "fat lesbian," and the decision is being lauded by LGBTQ+ groups. On Monday, French-Swiss polemicist Alain Bonnet, who goes by Alain Soral, was sentenced by the Lausanne court for the crimes of defamation, discrimination and incitement to hatred after he criticized Catherine Macherel, a journalist for Swiss newspapers Tribune de Geneve and 24 Heures, in a Facebook video two years ago. "This court decision is an important moment for justice and rights of LGBTQI people in Switzerland," said Murial Waeger, co-director of a lesbian activist group. "The conviction of Alain Soral is a strong signal that homophobic hatred cannot be tolerated in our society." In addition to the prison time, Soral was subsequently ordered to pay legal fees and fines totaling thousands of Swiss francs. Soral’s sentencing came after he called Macherel a "fat lesbian," criticized her work as a "queer activist" and said she was "unhinged" in a social media video, according to Swiss public broadcaster RTS. Pascal Junod, a lawyer for Soral, mockingly blasted the conviction for a "crime of opinion" in an email to The Associated Press. He said the case aimed to probe whether a person had "sinned against the dogmas of single thought." Soral will appeal to Swiss federal court and "if necessary" to the European Court of Human Rights, his lawyer added. In 2020, Swiss voters approved a measure that made it illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual orientation. This conviction was not the first time Soral has gotten into trouble over his words as he was previously and repeatedly convicted in France for denying the Holocaust, which is a crime in France. He was sentenced to jail time in 2019 over the denials. https://dailycaller.com/2023/10/03/sports-governing-body-scraps-open-category-trans-athletes-no-one-signs-up/ Sports Governing Body Scraps ‘Open’ Category For Trans Athletes After No One Signs Up World Aquatics (WA), the international water sports governing body, announced in a press release Tuesday that it is getting rid of its transgender “open” category for the 2023 World Cup since no athletes had decided to sign up. WA said in August that it was opening a category for athletes to swim the 50-meter and 100-meter distances regardless of gender. After athletes failed to show, WA decided to scrap the category for the World Cup in Berlin, Germany, from Oct. 6 to Oct. 8 but noted that the “Open Category Working Group” would still consider reopening the division if demand increased in the future, according to the press release. “The World Aquatics Open Category Working Group will continue its work and engagement with the aquatics community on Open Category events,” the announcement reads. “Even if there is no current demand at the elite level, the working group is planning to look at the possibility of including Open Category races at Masters events in the future.” WA originally planned to debut the open category in July in Fukuoka, Japan, during its congressional meeting but later decided against it. The organization announced its new “gender inclusion policy” in 2022, which made it possible to create the “open category” for future competitions and required male athletes looking to compete in the female division to have transitioned and experienced no puberty symptoms before the age of 12, as well maintaining regular testosterone levels below 2.5 nanomoles per liter. “When World Aquatics instituted its Policy on Eligibility for the Men’s and Women’s Competition Categories, we committed to exploring the creation of an open category,” World Aquatics President Husain Al-Musallam said, according to the press release. “True to our word, a team of experts has diligently worked to make this a reality. I would like to thank all those who have helped World Aquatics to deliver this opportunity.” Other sport governing bodies have opted to not allow transgender athletes to compete in divisions outside of their biological sex, such as the International Cycling Union, which announced in July that males who had transitioned after puberty could not compete in the female category. The International Angling Sports Federation made a similar decision on Sept. 29 after England’s team said that it would boycott the world championship if men were allowed to compete with women.
