This Monday on KPFA Radio's Women's Magazine, Kim Anno and Lisa Dettmer talk to queer ecology activists who are courageously  fighting the climate crisis in Florida These inspiring and creative Queer activists  are represented in the new film “Cant Stop Change: Queer Climate Stories from the Florida Frontline”, that is now available to see online at Kinema for the month of July.   “Can't Stop Change” weaves together interviews with fourteen trans, queer, and Two-Spirit collaborators across Florida, bravely fighting for change in one of the most anti Queer states and a state  that has been battered by natural and political storms: climate gentrification and displacement. These activists target the  disproportionate affect natural disasters have  oppressed communities based on race, class, and gender and link the environmental disasters with the  political disasters of  anti-abortion and ani-trans bills,  permitless concealed carry laws; and white patriarchal corporate power that militarizes the police.  Unlike many mainstream environmental groups these Queer ecology activists recognizes that we need deep structural change that challenges Cis Heterosexual white Capitalist patriarchy and doesn't just treat symptoms.  In the face of all of this devastation, these queer and trans ecology activists in Florida are courageously imagining a better future and tackling the issues head-on through mutual aid, building queer communities, and standing up to corporations and bad politics. In this stirring  documentary they  follow  these inspirational activists as they tour the state, meet with mutual aid providers to uncover the challenges of each area, and learn about the passionate work being done to combat them.  We talk to Vanessa Raditz, the Co-Director of Can't Stop Change who is also a queer climate justice/queer ecology  activist in the Southeast and Bay Area  And we talk to Florida Native, Barbara Perez , who is PhD student at Florida Atlantic University where she  is doing her dissertation on climate gentrification    And lastly we talk to Rebecca Wood who is an  Environmental Educator and Miami resident who is currently involved in local climate activism/community disaster preparedness The post Queer Ecology in Florida- “Can't Stop Change” appeared first on KPFA.

Welcome to Beaver Creek Conservation Area. This area, which is about 15 minutes south of Saskatoon, is home to beautiful prairie landscapes, rare and threatened species at risk, and it's where you'll find Saskatoon's Kelton Braun most days.Since 2020, Kelton has been an Environmental Educator for the Meewasin Valley Authority out at Beaver Creek. He does incredible work with Saskatoon students teaching them about this beautiful and fragile ecosystem. Kelton also teaches the general public about the plants, wildlife and especially pollinators that call Beaver Creek home through specially designed hikes called Wildflower Walks. I met Kelton for the first time last summer when I signed up for one of these walks. His passion for nature and ability to connect people to the outside world is worth celebrating, and after spending a few hours with him last year hiking around Beaver Creek, it was clear he needed to be on the podcast. We met a few Fridays ago at Beaver Creek to learn more about the work he does teaching people about conservation and our prairie surroundings. I also wanted to discover where Kelton's passion for nature comes from. We also talk about what those of us living in Saskatoon can do to protect our prairie plants and the pollinators who have called our community homes for many years. It's so much fun hiking with him because he sees things that most of us would never pay attention to and then he's able to tell you all about those things in a way that will stick in your head. Myself, Kelton and photographer Chelsea Klette hit the Red Trail at Beaver Creek shortly after 9am. It was a bit windy and the air was crisp, but the sun was shining and Kelton was eager to hit the trail. Follow and listen to YXE Underground wherever you find your favourite podcasts including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. The Langur Project Penang (LPP), is a social enterprise in Penang that works for the conservation of primates, specifically to cultivate coexistence among humans and urban monkeys in Peninsular Malaysia. The team has been studying dusky langurs in urban Penang for several years and found that there is a need to help langurs and other treetop animals cross roads more safely. Artificial crossing structures like rope canopy bridges have been used in several countries, to reconnect separated forest patches or habitat fragments and to allow safe passage for small animals. In 2019, LPP made history by successfully setting up Malaysia's first urban canopy bridge in Teluk Bahang, Penang. The bridge has since been used by various wildlife to cross the busy road to this day, with zero primate roadkill at the site. Recently, the group successfully launched the first of three residential road canopy bridges in Penang UNESCO Biosphere Reserve's residential areas and we find out more from Dr. Yap Jo Leen (Head of Langur Project Penang (LPP), Wildlife Researcher and Environmental Educator), Lee Joey (Project Executive, Langur Project Penang) and Wong Hui Yi (Environmental Communicator, Langur Project Penang).Image credit: The Langur Project Penang (LPP)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thrive Outside Guest Shannon Rozea, Founder, Thrive Outside Today's kids are our future, however, denying them access to outdoor experiences deprives them of the learning needed to become better stewards of the planet. And, the fact is, many children are lacking opportunities to thrive outside, because many lack access to safe, beautiful, natural spaces. The Center for American progress recently reported that 70 percent of low-income communities across the country are located in nature-deprived areas. Beyond this, school days are planned to the minute, with little time for spontaneity. Recess periods have been cut short, and time outside for hands-on learning have come to be viewed as a luxury most teachers think they can ill afford. Ironically, research findings are showing that this nature-depravity is proving very costly to a child's natural process of healthy growth and development - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Guest Shannon Rozea (pronoounced Rosé) is an Environmental Educator and the Founding Director of Thrive Outside. She is also a Landscape Architect and a mother of five, dedicated to passing on a legacy of love and respect for our earth. Her organization helps schools provide their students with greater access to nature through hands-on outdoor learning and nature play. Shannon does this by designing and implementing dynamic "Outdoor Learning Zones" and supporting these zones with teacher professional development in outdoor learning. Getting kids back outside and back into nature requires some extremely creative outside-the-box thinking. Shannon and I share our stories, ideas, guidance and resources to help make this happen. Episode 164: Are you a fan of Raptors or birds of prey? Members of this large group of magnificent birds include hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls. For many of us, seeing raptors in cities and in the wilderness is awe-inspiring.  To learn more about these amazing birds, I am joined by Lisa Owens Viani and Allen Fish, co-founders of the nonprofit Raptors Are the Solution (RATS).  We begin by chatting about the wonders of raptors and why Lisa and Allen have devoted so much of their lives to helping these birds. We then discuss the impact that anticoagulant rodenticides is having on raptors and wildlife. Used worldwide, rodenticides (or rat poisons) affect not only rats, but also large numbers of non-target animals including raptors, bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, bears, and fish. Rodenticides enter the food chain when animals eat poisoned rodents and receive secondary exposure. Anticoagulant rodenticide ingestion can lead to immune suppression, rodenticide-induced mange, internal hemorrhaging, and death. The overgrowth of rats is caused partly by a lack of predators. We talk about how the poisons we use to control rats end up harming or killing the very predators that are efficient at keeping rodent populations in check.  This interview contains vital information about how we can be better caretakers of our shared environment. All of us can take action to protect raptors and wildlife from anticoagulant rodenticides. What can we do? Start with avoiding the use of toxic rat poisons. Don't make your yard a rat haven. Exclusion, sanitation, and trapping are effective nontoxic methods of rodent control. Visit the Raptors are the Solution website for tips on how to make your yard less attractive to rats, educational resources, an activist toolkit, and more at raptorsarethesolution.org  Guests: Lisa Owens Viani is a long time environmental writer and wildlife advocate. Lisa co-founded and directs Raptors Are The Solution- or RATS, a project of Earth Island Institute.  RATS educates about the ecological role of raptors and the enormous danger that they and all wildlife, as well as pets and children, face from the wide use and availability of anticoagulant rat poisons. RATS partners with other agencies, scientists, municipalities, and NGO's to work toward eliminating toxic rodenticides from the food web. RATS' multi-pronged approach includes public education as well as legislative and legal work to achieve better regulation of these products.  Lisa was honored as the Fund for Wild Nature's Grassroots Activist of 2021 and received a Special Achievement Award on behalf of raptors from the International Owl Center in 2018. Allen Fish is the Associate Director for Conservation and Community Science at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.  Allen is also the director of the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory since its founding in the mid 1980s. The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory is a four-decades-old community-science program of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in cooperation with the National Park Service. It's set up to monitor the largest migration site for birds of prey in the Pacific Flyway.   Allen was a Lecturer at UC Davis from 2003 to 2011 where he taught Raptor Biology. Allen has a long history of writing and public speaking on raptor biology and conservation, urban wildlife ecology, climate change impacts, and the power of community science. Allen was awarded Bay Nature's Environmental Educator of the Year Award in 2016 and Golden Gate Audubon honored Allen with the Elsie Roemer Award for Conservation in 2020.   In 2011, Allen assisted Lisa in founding Raptors are the Solution. Allen lives with his family in Berkeley, and has recently become obsessed by the lives and ecology of dragonflies. Note: I was inspired to pursue this topic when I noticed that I wasn't hearing as many owls at night in my neighborhood. When disoriented rats began stumbling around our yard during the day and several were found dead in our yard, I did some research and discovered that rat poisons or anticoagulant rodenticides were the likely culprit-not only responsible for the dying and dead rats, but also for the decreased owl numbers. I decided to write an article Silent Night- The Unintended  Consequences of Rodenticides and in doing my research, I discovered Raptors Are the Solution (RATS).
