The Buddha's teaching on Wise Speech remains as important and necessary today as it did over 2,500 years ago. It may be even more important to be grounded in wisdom and clarity because there are so many more ways to interact with each other and we see the impact and harm of unwise speech around us on a daily basis. Mary talks about how we can make this part of our life.Recorded Jan. 17, 2026 in the virtual worldSend me a text with any questions or comments! This talk explores how every word we speak carries the power to create harmony or division, awakening or confusion. Drawing from the Buddha's teaching on Right Speech—truthful, kind, useful, and timely communication—you'll discover how mindfulness transforms the way we express ourselves and listen to others. Words become more than sound; they become expressions of presence, integrity, and care. Through stories, reflection, and a few moments of silence, we'll explore how conscious speech can become a profound practice of awakening in daily life. You'll learn how to pause before speaking, feel into your intention, and sense whether your words arise from love or from fear. You'll explore the liberating clarity of truthfulness, the warmth of kindness, the power of words that serve, and the wisdom of silence. These simple but radical principles—rooted in the Buddha's Eightfold Path—can transform your relationships, deepen your meditation, and turn everyday conversation into an expression of compassion and freedom.
Words are an integral part of daily life, but they have great power to lead us to life or death. Come examine 10 principles in Proverbs to help us to develop wise speech and avoid foolish speech.
"Stop, See, Soften, Serve" is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation about Wise Action. Actions tend to be greater than words, and this week's talk is about making the Dharma visible through what we do. We explored Wise Action's three threads of non-harming, not taking what isn't freely given, and honoring intimacy and consent as well as how they braid with Wise Speech to make our lives safer to be around. The practice is simple: Stop. See. Soften. Serve. This talk seemed very timely for our group, and I hope you find it useful in your life. Enjoy!https://bio.reverendgeorgebeecher.com
"Wise and Free" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha on the topic of Wise Speech. We often celebrate the idea of free speech (the right to say what we want, when we want). But the Buddha taught something deeper: wise speech.Wise speech isn't about restriction, it's about freedom. The kind that comes from words that heal instead of harm, and which connect instead of divide. This talk explores how our words can bind us in regret or set us free in compassion. Just because speech is free doesn't mean it's wise, but wise speech will always be freeing.https://bio.reverendgeorgebeecher.com

Wise Concentration, the final step of the Eightfold Path, integrates all preceding steps, guiding practitioners toward liberation and enlightenment. It involves steadying the mind to develop insight, clarity, and a deep state of presence.Wise Concentration builds on:Wise Understanding: Focusing on why we practice and what we need.Wise Intention: Setting a clear purpose for practice.Wise Speech, Action, and Livelihood: Cultivating ethical discipline and clarity in thought and behaviour.Wise Effort: Redirecting the mind to the present moment with perseverance.Wise Mindfulness: Maintaining non-judgmental awareness to support concentration. In yoga, concentration techniques include scheduling time, creating a focused space, steadying the gaze (Drishti), practicing Ujjayi breath, and using objects such as breath or sensation to anchor awareness. With consistent practice, distractions lessen, leading to deeper focus, inner stillness, and the joyful absorption of the present moment—paving the way to freedom and fulfilment. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. The third step of the Eightfold Path, Wise Speech, emphasises the importance of mindful, compassionate communication. It involves refraining from false speech, divisive speech, harsh words, and idle chatter, while cultivating truthful, meaningful, and purposeful communication. Wise Speech encourages us to speak with honesty, kindness, and empathy, promoting understanding and harmony.Active listening is also essential, allowing for deeper connection and skilful responses. The practice of mindful speech asks us to reflect on the impact of our words and ensure they are thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind.In addition, we practice Noble Silence, which enhances concentration and mindfulness, reduces distractions, and creates space for reflection. During Noble Silence, we observe our internal dialogue, recognising the stories and reactions that arise. This practice trains the mind to be more present and connected to the body. Today, we'll use pranayama techniques like OM and Bhramari to deepen this connection and foster contentment and freedom. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. The Eightfold Path is a central teaching in Buddhism, offering guidelines for a meaningful life. It consists of eight steps: Wise Understanding, Wise Intention, Wise Speech, Wise Action, Wise Livelihood, Wise Effort, Wise Mindfulness, and Wise Concentration. These steps are categorised into three groups: Wisdom (Wise Understanding, Wise Intention), Morality (Wise Speech, Wise Action, Wise Livelihood), and Concentration (Wise Effort, Wise Mindfulness, Wise Concentration). These categories are interdependent, supporting the development of wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental concentration.Wise Understanding involves a clear awareness of the Four Noble Truths, which explain suffering, its causes, its cessation, and the path to its end. It encourages mindfulness of one's body, mind, and energy, helping identify attachments and aversions. Practicing this wisdom in yoga and life helps clear distractions, leading to greater clarity, compassion, wisdom, and love, ultimately guiding us toward self-awareness, peace, and purpose. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. (Insight San Diego) Wise speech is an integral part of the traditional Buddhist path of awakening and a powerful way to energize our daily life practice, but is often underdeveloped in Western Buddhist practice. We'll look in a very practical way at three aspects of wise speech: (1) developing presence in the midst of communication; (2) working with the four guidelines for skillful speech developed by the Buddha; and (3) becoming more mindful of and skillful with thoughts and emotions occurring during communication. For each of the foundations, a number of ways of practicing are offered. The talk is followed by discussion.

The Buddha's teaching on Wise Speech serves us well in these days of great polarization. We have our sides and spew our rhetoric, often without thinking about how we communicate can make a bad situation worse. The invitation, as always, is pause and think about the truth, necessity and kindness of how we connect with others. It does not mean we shy away from difficult conversations or keep quiet in the face of injustice. Instead, it asks us to really be present in how we show up. (Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We first review four foundations of wise speech: (1) developing presence in the midst of communication; (2) working with the four guidelines for skillful speech developed by the Buddha; (3) bringing our mindfulness and skillful responses to our thoughts, emotions, and body states into our speech practice; and (4) empathy practice, tuning into others' and our own emotions and sense of "what matters." We then explore the importance of being with challenges and difficulties in our practice generally, and do two exercises exploring a difficult or challenging interaction with another, including working with an "empathy map." Discussion follows. (Materials on emotions [or feelings], needs, and an "empathy map" are given below, under "documents.")
