Breht listens to, reflects on, and critically engages with a public lecture by the late philosopher Michael Sugrue titled Marcus Aurelius' Meditations: The Stoic Ideal. He discusses the philosophy of Stoicism, its insights as well as its limitations, its commodification and bastardization under late capitalism, the dialectical inversion of the philosophy of a Roman Emperor for proletarian revolutionaries, Virtue Ethics, Mahayana Buddhism and The Four Brahmaviharas, the importance of courage and discipline and responsibility, Momento Mori, the Cardinal Virtues, equipping ourselves mentally and emotionally for a lifetime of class struggle, seeking the balance of the Middle Path, Marxist Dialectics, and much more! Professor Sugrue passed away last year, and Breht has always found his free, public lectures on philosophy to be helpful and really well done. In the spirit of free and open access to education, Breht offers his knowledge of philosophy alongside this offering by Professor Sugrue. The use of this lecture series falls under the protections of the Fair Use doctrine. Drawing on the immense wealth of research and logic in these three modalities my horses, my clients and I are sculpting a "Middle Path" of horse training which avoids extreme binaries. You know what binaries are: R+ versus R-. Classical versus Western. Etc. We avoid that and opt for a middle path that is inclusive of all. Creating unique training techniques that are simple to follow and kind to the horse. If you wish to use food reward, you can. If you don't, you don't have to. What we don't use is dominance or escalating pressure. The goal? A performance relationship with your horse that is effortless, inspiring and enjoyable. Emotional horsemanship serves private horse owners who wish to have life long bonds with their horses, versatile and adaptable equine athletes who enjoy tackling a variety of tasks. Recently, a lot of professionals have engaged in Emotional Horsemanship as they are curious about it and/or needed private support behind the scenes of their own equine professional activities. The pre-requisite? To be deeply caring and open minded. Momoko Uno is a doctor of integrative medicine in New York City. After many years of writing in the closet, she decided that if she could make it out of Australian hotel quarantine alive, she would take steps towards her dream of becoming a published author. At the moment of witnessing her mother's death and brushing up against her own mortality, she realized life is too short to live in fear. Throughout her stories, Momoko weaves in elements of healing from her work as a medical practitioner. Her own rich experience with shamanism, spiritual psychology and an upbringing steeped in Zen Buddhism and Anglicanism have added nuance to her world view.http://momokowrites.com/
Often the path requires us to embrace apparent contradictions. Some of our practice has to be understood from different perspectives, depending on how we're going to apply it. Training ourselves to stay with the opposites helps us keep our minds pliable and open. It counteracts our tendency to fit everything we hear into our existing world view.
For this episode, David is joined by Brian Beckcom who is a computer scientist, philosopher, lawyer, and Aggies graduate (Texas A&M). He and David discuss a wide range of topics starting with the role education plays in creating a firm foundation on which to build success. They also discuss how AI is going to impact our ability to communicate, how to use pacing and stories to be persuasive, and how taking the middle path leads to success while helping others. To explore how to get unstuck on your mission, put your purpose into practice, and convert your ideas into impact book a discovery call with David here https://calendly.com/david-peoplewithpurpose/30min KEY TAKEAWAYS All successful people can work with groups, are self-motivated, and not afraid to set challenging goals. Successful businesses have a purpose that goes beyond making money. We are reaching the point where many people cannot tell the difference between AI and something a human has created. Humans have always used stories to communicate and find common understanding. Never start a persuasive conversation by telling someone that they are wrong. Be realistic about what drives people and use that when trying to persuade others. By providing what others need, you can always make money ethically Law is the manifestation of our ethical beliefs about certain things. BEST MOMENTS “You have to have some purpose beyond making money.” “A moral person tries to get those economic incentives to line up with the moral incentives.” “I believe that in general the middle path is usually the correct one.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/brianbeckcomlawyer https://www.vbattorneys.com https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI5qM4nBh5xEZOb0jDfiAjw ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. We all have that innate tendency to be hard on ourselves sometimes, and the concept of Grace can be confusing if we don't understand what it is or how it works. We know it's important to take personal responsibility, but we also know it's important to invite Grace into the process of personal growth. So how to do that? This is what I call the Middle Path. Join me this week as I explore insights into Grace in the hopes that it illuminates how generous Grace really is and what it looks like. You'll hear why the real skill of giving yourself (and others) the benefit of the doubt can be difficult, but necessary, how judgment makes personal growth harder, and how you can begin being more generous with yourself and others to build a better world, starting with you. If you're ready to bring that dream in your heart that lives inside of you out into the world and you're wondering how you can get support, you're in luck! I first met Michael at a course at the Chek Institute about five years ago, where I learned he had been teaching meditation for many years. I ended up studying with him online and in person, and I have learned a tremendous amount from his curriculum. In our discussion today we speak about his new email course, which will be released shortly and details Five Indispensable Skills. I think this course will be invaluable for anyone in my audience. Is there an epidemic of overparenting? And if so, where does it come from? Is it parenting from a place of fear, from a place of information overload, from the anxiety that is all around us, the drive to make our children perfect or is it from the frustration of trying to raise a child who doesn't do what you want them to do? In this third and final session with Pedro and Claudia, Leslie explores these questions. Pedro and Claudia want to be the best parents they can be to their 16 year old son LIam, but are overparenting and doing too much undermining their efforts? Leslie turns her attention to the “overparenting problem” that's shaping the next generation, and leaving them with lasting consequences. Welcome to Third Party Week! From time to time this election year, we're going to do some special series that highlight the rhythm of an election cycle. This week, we are looking at third parties: who runs for a third party bid, who votes for a third party, and how much do third party candidates really matter?Today: The 1980 election is remembered for Jimmy Carter's "malaise" and the fresh face of Ronald Reagan reviving the Republican party. But there was a third party candidate, John Anderson, trying to provide a sensible, middle-path, alternative to what he saw as Carter and Reagan's extremism.Find out more at thisdaypod.comThis Day In Esoteric Political History is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX.Your support helps foster independent, artist-owned podcasts and award-winning stories. If you want to support the show directly, you can do so on our website: ThisDayPod.comGet in touch if you have any ideas for future topics, or just want to say hello. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Heather Live, the host welcomes Dr. Elli McGregor, an integrative pediatrician with over 15 years of experience. Dr. McGregor, also known as Dr. Ellie, specializes in treating children with focus deficits, hyperactivity, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and perfectionism. She utilizes advanced diagnostics and personalized care to help her patients reclaim their joy and potential, often reducing or eliminating the need for medications. Dr. Ellie shares her journey from a traditional pediatrician to an integrative specialist, driven by the increasing mental health issues in children she observed in her practice. She pursued further education in functional medicine and eventually founded her practice, Middle Path Integrated Pediatrics, to provide holistic care without the constraints of a conventional medical practice. The philosophy behind Middle Path is to work at the intersection of modern medicine and holistic health, offering a nuanced perspective that avoids the extremes of strictly conventional or holistic modalities. Dr. Ellie emphasizes the importance of addressing the full spectrum of factors affecting children's mental health, from brain chemistry and nutrition to environmental influences and stress management. Common issues seen in her practice include nutritional imbalances, such as magnesium deficiency, and the impact of social pressures and trauma on children's mental health. Dr. Ellie discusses the underlying causes of conditions like ADHD, including dietary deficiencies, brain wave patterns, and gut health. She also highlights the importance of personalized treatment plans, which are developed through comprehensive intake sessions and advanced diagnostic testing. The episode concludes with Dr. Ellie advising against one-size-fits-all solutions and advocating for targeted interventions based on each child's unique needs. She stresses the significance of understanding the reasons behind behaviors, such as excessive phone use, and addressing the root causes rather than resorting to punitive measures. In her continuing series on abundance, Host Helen Lee delves further into her vision of Abundance For All and the process of Ascension. She discusses the importance of aligning with the higher consciousness and frequency of the new world we'd like to live in, rather focus on the noise of the outmoded systems that are being dismantled. Helen shares affirmations and encourages listeners to reprogram themselves with new beliefs of abundance and self worth, highlighting the significance of communication, teamwork, collaboration and personal responsibility in co-creating a loving and abundant world. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all equal at the Soul level and have the potential to awaken to our True Selves and live from a place of Soul and Spirit or Pure Consciousness. Our Souls are individuations that stem from what is variously referred to as the Universe, Spirit or Pure Consciousness or even God. It's about co-creating a truly loving world of thoughtfulness and consideration, peace and plenty for all. We need to walk the balanced and highly conscious Middle Path, where we love and honour ourselves and others greatly, We are here to inhabit New Earth, to create history by leading the way with establishing this amazing new dimension of higher consciousness and frequency that will form a completely different world in the decades ahead. This is the soul purpose and mission that some of us are here to carry out, in order to fulfil our vision of Abundance For All for all human beings, all sentient beings, all that lives and breathes. There is nothing that is not of God. It is all part of Divine Play. While we genuinely care deeply for all of humanity, we can choose to only spend time with those we treasure and who treasure us, at both the personal and work levels. BEST MOMENTS "The new is already here, the old is just making a lot of noise dying." "New Earth is already here. It is not a location, but a dimension of higher consciousness and frequency." "We are all equals at the Soul level, but choose to take on roles and personas in each lifetime on Earth to experience and learn certain things in order to expand consciousness." "Life and Pure Consciousness are one and the same. Soul and Spirit are one and the same." "We can't take anything or anyone important to us for granted. We need to know how they would feel about what we want, what matters to us, and to adjust accordingly." "The more aligned you are, the clearer you would be and therefore the greater your discernment would be as well." "Our unconsciousness creates chaos. The solution to the chaos and the unconsciousness is alignment and simplicity." "I long for every Soul and every sentient being on Earth to flourish enormously and endlessly." Our story tonight is called The Middle Path, and it's a story about a trek down an unknown trail at the park.
