“A Wider View of Mindfulness” is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation in which we explore mindfulness as the Buddha taught it: an inward knowing of experience that helps us see clearly, respond wisely, and reduce suffering. Grounded in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, this is a gentle widening of the lens, building on commonly held ideas about what Mindfulness is, inspired by the MindfulnessVR Community Discord conversation on the topic. I hope you'll find a broader view of mindfulness herein, and that you enjoy the exploration! https://bio.reverendgeorgebeecher.com

Ajahn Hasapanna discusses sutta 22 from the Majjhima Nikaya: Alagaddūpama Sutta – “The Simile of the Snake” and is using Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation. Read MN22 on Sutta Central here: “One of the monks denies that prohibited conduct is really a problem. The monks and then the Buddha subject him to an impressive dressing down. The Buddha compares someone who understands only the letter of the teachings to someone who grabs a snake by the tail, and also invokes the famous simile of the raft.”, Sutta Central.

(Cambridge Insight Meditation Center) We are living through a profound pivot point. The old myths of our civilization–endless growth, rugged individualism, and “us first” hierarchies are crumbling. In their place, fear, division, and the architecture of fascism are rapidly rising. As the Jungian analyst Edward Edinger warned, when a central myth breaks down, meaning drains away, and primitive forces rush in. The Buddha also lived in a world burning with greed, hatred, and delusion. He challenged the systems of his time, endured attempts on his life, negotiated peace between warring factions, and even stood before armies bent on destruction. In the Sakka-pañha Sutta, when asked why beings who wish for peace end up in rivalry and violence, he pointed to the root: the mind entangled in papañca, the web of proliferating stories that harden separation. How then do we understand this immense historic moment? We can take courage from the Buddha. He didn't always succeed. Even with his wisdom and compassion, he could not prevent the destruction of his own people. Yet he still stood before armies, still spoke truth, and still acted with courage. Even when outcomes are uncertain, we too are called, at this time, to step forward with clarity, compassion, and steadfastness. Together we will explore how to bring the medicine of the Dharma into this moment of profound challenge, not as escape, but as a path of right action, refuge, and renewal.

Mindfulness of the In-and-Out-Breath, Ānāpānasati, was the favourite meditation object of the Buddha himself. He has given us very comprehensive and detailed instructions how to develop this form of meditation. However, many meditators, often even those practising regularly for many years, are not fully aware, or at least do not really apply, the instructions as provided by the Buddha. To encourage everyone to receive the full results of their Breath Meditation, Ajahn Dhammasiha goes through all 16 steps of Mindfulness of Breathing, as expounded by the Buddha; e.g. in Ānāpānasati Sutta, Majjhima Nikāya/Middle Length Discourses, No. 118Each of the four Tetrads develops one of the Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipaṭṭhāna) (i) BODY (KĀYA) (ii) FEELINGS (VEDANĀ) (iii) CITTA (MIND) (iv) DHAMMA (TRUTH) [i] 1. He breathes in mindfully, and he breathes out mindfully2.Breathing in long, he knows: ‘I'm breathing in long'; or breathing out long, he knows: ‘I' breathing out long.' Or breathing in short, he knows: ‘I'm breathing in short'; or breathing out short, he knows: ‘I am breathing out short.' 3. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in feeling the whole body.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out feeling the whole body.' 4. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in calming all bodily activity' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out calming all bodily activity.'[ii]5. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in experiencing rapture.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out experiencing rapture.' 6. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in experiencing bliss.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in experiencing bliss.' 7. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in experiencing mental activity.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out experiencing mental activity.' 8.He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in calming mental activity.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out calming mental activity.'(iii)9. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in experiencing the mind.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out experiencing the mind.' 10. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in gladdening the mind.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out gladdening the mind.' 11. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in unifying the mind.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out unifying the mind.' 12. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in releasing the mind.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out releasing the mind.'(iv)13. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in focussing on impermanence.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out focussing on inconstancy.' 14. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in focussing on dispassion / fading away.' He trains himself: ‘I will breathe out focussing on dispassion / fading away.' 15. He trains himself: ‘I will breathe in focussing on cessation.' Ananda was born in Sri Lanka went to the village temple with his Grandfather from a very young age. Yet he came to practise meditation only after meeting the then Ajahn Jagaro & Ajahn Brahm, around 1987. He has been meditating for about 25 years and considers Ajahn Brahm, Ajahn Brahmali & Bhante Sujato as his spiritual teachers. He and his family started visiting Bodhinyana and Dhammaloka regularly in 1991 and he has served in the Committee in different capacities including Treasurer and the Secretary. He has also contributed to Buddhist communities overseas in various ways and is a student of early Buddhist texts from the Tripitaka, relying mostly on Bhante Sujato's English translations of Sutta on SuttaCentral & also, Dhammaloka Sutta classes & Sutta Retreats at Jhana Grove. Every year, the monastic community (Monks and nuns) go on a three month retreat called the “Rains Retreat” from mid July to mid October. During this period, they do not visit our centres for teachings as it's a time for deepening their own practice. While the monks and nuns are away, we will have some interesting guest speakers coming in to give the Friday Night talk.
