Professor Coles delineates the process whereby religious error, first resident in the body, becomes marked on the skin. Early modern medical theory bound together psyche and soma in mutual influence. By the end of the sixteenth century, there is a general acceptance that the soul's condition, as a consequence of religious belief or its absence, could be manifest in the humoral disposition of the physical body. The history that this book unfolds describes developments in natural philosophy in the early part of the sixteenth century that force a subsequent reconsideration of the interactions of body and soul and that bring medical theory and theological discourse into close, even inextricable, contact. With particular consideration to how these ideas are reflected in texts by Elizabeth Cary, John Donne, Ben Jonson, William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, Mary Wroth, and others, Professor Coles reveals how science and religion meet nascent capitalism and colonial endeavor to create a taxonomy of Christians in Black and White. In this episode of Our Community, I'm in the village of Hayfield in the high peaks of Derbyshire on the ninetieth anniversary weekend of the historic Kinder Mass Trespass. The physical and mental consolations of nature are one of life's great gifts but granting working class people access to the countryside has long been fraught with conflict. Ninety years ago members of the young communist league gathered at Kinder Scout here in Derbyshire, to highlight the fact that walkers were denied access to areas of open country. When the group reached the plateau of Kinder Scout, there were violent scuffles with gamekeepers. As a result, six ramblers were arrested. They received jail sentences ranging from two to six months for offences relating to violence involving the keepers.According to the Hayfield Kinder Trespass Group website, this act of civil disobedience was one of the most successful in British history. It arguably led to the passage of the National Parks legislation in 1949[8] and helped pave way for the establishment of the Pennine Way and other long-distance footpaths. Walkers' rights to travel through common land and uncultivated upland were eventually protected by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CROW Act) of 2000. In this episode I'm joined by Dr Jen Baker, where we discuss her interest in the spectral child and representations of the child in death. We talk about how the legacy of these representations in the nineteenth century linger to this day, through angelic suggestions in Facebook memorials, to the horrific representations of the demonic child in horror films. This book opens up an entirely new field for the study of early modern women's writing, but it also pushes beyond other scholarly conventions to prompt new discussions about the purpose and performance of catechising, the character of household religion and its relationship to education and particularly the teaching of literacy, as well as the capacity of women to create systems of doctrine, with sometimes surprising sources and results. But the book raises other questions as well, not least why it is that the recovery of early modern religion, and particularly the religion of early modern women, so often takes place within literature departments. Catechisms and Women's Writing in Seventeenth-Century England is a major statement in early modern religious history, and a ground-breaking work in the recovery of early modern women's voices. Crawford Gribben is a professor of history at Queen's University Belfast. We took a dive into some feminist literary criticism this week and read Joanna Russ's How to Suppress Women's Writing. It was published in 1983 and therefore focuses a lot on strictly women's writing - but we contend these methods have been used and continue to be used not just on work and art by women, but that of people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. Năm 1984 bà thành lập nhà xuất bản Tủ Sách Cành Nam (Canh Nam Publishers). Năm sau, bà đã cùng với Hội Văn Hóa Việt Nam tại Bắc Mỹ của GS Nguyễn Ngọc Bích và Nhóm Xác Ðịnh của GS Đặng Đình Khiết thành lập Tổ Hợp Xuất Bản Miền Ðông Hoa Kỳ. Bà cộng tác với nhiều báo chí ở hải ngoại từ đầu cuộc di tản và đã từng giữ chức vụ phó chủ tịch Văn Bút Việt Nam Hải ngoại, nhiệm kỳ 1991-1993, (thời nhà văn/nhà thơ Trang Châu làm chủ tịch.) Thơ của Trương Anh Thụy đã được dịch sang tiếng Anh do Nguyễn Ngọc Bích (War & Exile, A VietnameseAnthology, Vietnamese P.E.N., East Coast U.S.A., 1989, và A Mother'sLullaby, Cành Nam, 1989); Huỳnh Sanh Thông (An Anthology of Vietnamese Poems, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1996); Văn của bà được giới thiệu trên những diễn đàn như tạp chí Indochina Chronology (tháng 7-9, 1990) và tại hội nghị quốc tế hằng niên của Hội Á Ðông Học (Association of Asian Studies, 25-28 tháng 3, 1993). Truyện ngắn của bà được giới thiệu trong tuyển tập 20 Năm Văn học Việt Nam hải ngoại (Ðại Nam xb, 1995) và G.S. Nguyễn Ðình Hòa cũng đã điểm sách cuốn Trạm nghỉ chân trong World Literature Today của Ðại học Oklahoma (1994). Sự nghiệp văn học của Trương Anh Thụy được nhắc đến trong The Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States (Oxford University Press, 1995.) Ngoài ra bà cũng có mục riêng trong từ điển Tác Giả Việt Nam / Vietnamese Authors do Lê Bảo Hoàng sưu tập (Sóng Văn, 2005). Tác phẩm đã xuất bản: Của mưa gửi nắng (tập thơ, 1984); Trường ca Lời mẹ ru (kèm theo bản dịch Anh ngữ của học giả Nguyễn Ngọc Bích và 30 bức minh họa của họa sĩ Võ Ðình, 1989); Trạm nghỉ chân (tập 1, trong bộ trường giang Chuyển mùa); Ánh mắt (tập truyện,1998); Chuyển mùa (bộ trường giang tiểu thuyết, 2004, đoạt giải văn học của Hội Quốc Tế Y Sĩ Việt Nam Tự Do). Năm nay, 2021, ở tuổi 85, giữa mùa đại dịch, bà cũng như toàn dân trên thế giới bị giam hãm tại nhà, bà dùng thời giờ để gói ghém vài công việc dở dangnhư việc xuất bản của Tổ Hợp Xuất Bản Miền Đông Hoa Kỳ và Tủ Sách Cành Nam; kiểm kê một Tủ Sách Gia Đình gồm các sách cũ do song thân để lại và sách tặng của các văn thi hữu bốn phương được tích lũy qua nhiều năm tháng. Thời giờ còn lại bà tìm đọc sách Phật để thấu nghĩa sự “vô thường” của trời đất./.
