Esther Inglis went on to become a successful Tudor bookmaker and artist and Eleanor Chan argues that the inclusion of psalm music in the self portraits created by Inglis is a coded way of symbolising belonging at a time of religious strife. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
Join us for an enlightening conversation with Dr Liana Saif, a luminary in the field of esoteric studies, as we delve into the profound Arabic roots of Western esotericism. Dr. Saif's distinguished academic journey has positioned her at the forefront of research into the cross-cultural exchange of esoteric and occult knowledge between the Islamicate and European worlds. In this exclusive interview, we uncover the historical connections and influences that Arabic scholars and texts have had on developing Western esoteric traditions. In 2021, Liana Saif (PhD, 2012) joined the Centre for the Study of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam as an Assistant Professor in the History of Esotericism in the Middle Ages. Prior to this, she was a research associate at the Warburg Institute and the Université Catholique de Louvain, and she held a post-doctoral fellowship at the British Academy at the University of Oxford (St Cross). Saif's work focuses on Islamic esotericism and the occult sciences, with a special interest in the exchange of esoteric and occult knowledge between the medieval and early modern Islamicate and European contexts. Her book *The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy* was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015. She is currently preparing a long-awaited critical translation from Arabic into English of Maslama b. Qāsim al-Qurṭubī's (d. 964) *Ghāyat al-ḥakīm*, known in its Latin translation as the *Picatrix*. She has conducted research on the tenth-century secret brotherhood Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ (The Brethren of Purity), the pseudo-Aristotelian Hermetica, and Jābir ibn Ḥayyān (Geber in Latin). She is also active as a curator and exhibition consultant (British Museum, Ashmolean, Jeddah Dome, Museum of San Diego) deepening her interest in the material and artistic manifestations of the occult and the esoteric. Saif is a founding member of the European Network for the Study of Islam and Esotericism (ENSIE). Dr. Saif's role in translating and interpreting essential Arabic texts for a modern audience is pivotal. Her work bridges centuries of knowledge, uncovering the shared heritage of Islamicate and European esoteric traditions. Throughout this dialogue, she shares her insights into the seminal works and figures that have shaped the esoteric landscape, from the Hermetic corpus to the alchemical treatises of Jābir ibn ḥayyān. My guest today is Bill Sherman, who is the director of the Warburg Institute since 2017, following a distinguished career in academia and museums, most recently at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he was director of Research and Collections and head of the V&A Research Institute. In today's episode, we explore how one man's true passion for books and deep sense of curiosity led to the creation of one of the world's most unique and influential libraries. In the late 1870s in Hamburg, Germany, a young boy named Aby Warburg was the heir of a wealthy and influential family of German-Jewish bankers who had built their bank over generations. But Aby Warburg didn't have a head for numbers in business, but rather for books. When he was barely a teen, he made a deal with his little brother Max that he would forfeit to him his right to manage the family bank if Max agreed to provide him with as many books as he wanted for the rest of his life. This deal and his extensive studies in art history and his research into indigenous tribes built the foundation for what would become the Warburg Library for Cultural Knowledge in Hamburg. The library was moved from Hamburg to London in 1934 after the Nazis came to power in Germany. In London, it became the renowned Warburg Institute, which is located today in Woburn Square in London and is part of the University of London. It's a library with over 360,000 volumes, the largest collection in the world focused on the afterlife of antiquity and the transmission of culture, with a special emphasis on medieval and renaissance studies. In this episode, we examine the rivalry/friendship between Eisler and the great scholar of Jewish mysticism Gershom Scholem and reassess Eisler's infamous meeting with Scholem and Walter Benjamin in Paris in 1926. We try to unravel the mystery of why Eisler was disavowed by his government after he was appointed to The International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation. Finally, we take a look at the ambivalent reception of Eisler's 1922 Orpheus lecture in Hamburg (he gets a spontaneous ovation but his attempted art theft comes back to haunt him) and his strained relationships with the pioneering German intellectual historians Aby Warburg and Fritz Saxl. One question remains: how did Eisler's frock coat get stolen? Robert Whitehead of London, a self-described “Business Man” who was “no Churchman and not a Jesus worshipper, much as I admire him,” wrote to Robert Eisler on New Year's Eve of 1929, asking “if it is a frequent occurrence that men see The Christ; and are there occasions known when the visions are free from religiosity and at the same time full of life and power?” These questions came in light of Whitehead's dramatic experience when he had seen a blazing vision of Christ in his home. In letters between the two men over the next few years, Eisler gave a startling psychoanalytic interpretation of the dream, which he eventually published. Following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in March of 1938, Robert Eisler wrote to Oxford asking about being appointed to the Wilde Readership in Comparative and Natural Religion, thereby gaining a way out of Nazi-controlled Europe. On the day after Hitler held a rally at the Heldenplatz in Vienna attended by 200,000 Austrian supporters, a letter came expressing regret that Oxford was unable to offer any assistance. Desperate to find an escape, Eisler wrote to friends all over Europe and America, asking for help. Finally, Gilbert Murray, Eisler's old friend from his days with the League of Nations, stepped in and secured him the Oxford readership, which he was to have taken in October and held for three years. But on May 20th, Eisler was arrested and spent the next fifteen months in Dachau and Buchenwald, where he would see the things that inspired him to write Man into Wolf. I talk about the events of 1938 with Steven Beller and we also examine the case of a high-ranking S.S. officer who was expelled for plagiarizing Eisler's work on Jesus. A Very Square Peg: The Strange and Remarkable Life the Polymath Robert Eisler
In this episode, I look at Eisler's last days in England, where he found that the Oxford readership he had been promised before being sent to Dachau was taken by someone else, a paper shortage had put a stop to academic publishing, and that foreign Jews without visas were being imprisoned in a British internment camp on the Isle of Man. I also talk with astrology scholar Dr. Nicholas Campion about Eisler's scathing criticisms of newspaper astrological columns and unpack Eisler's final scholarly works on folklore, philology, and ethics. This episode officially concludes the story of Robert Eisler, but there will be a tenth and final episode in the near future that reflects on this project and academic podcasting as a whole after I have had time to hear some feedback. In this episode (# 2), we discuss Eisler's early years as a member of the Jewish bourgeoisie in turn-of-the-century Vienna with historian Steven Beller. We also hear from the closest living relative of Robert Eisler, his grand-nephew Richard Regen. Philosopher Tom Hurka provides some background for understanding the arguments Eisler is making in Studies in Value Theory, especially his critiques of hedonism and aesthetic philosophy. Finally, we look at the events surrounding Eisler's dramatic arrest and trial for attempted art theft in Udine in 1907 and discuss its short- and long-term consequences.
