Jeff Emig is a retired professional Supercross and motocross athlete who now works in television broadcasting, handling the color analyst for the World Supercross Championship. Prior to his television career, Emig rode for factory Yamaha and factory Kawasaki throughout the 1990s. He won the 1992 125 outdoor motocross championship, the 1996 250 outdoor motocross championship, and the 1997 Supercross and outdoor motocross championships. This episode with Emig dives into all kinds of fascinating conversations. We discuss him failing the eighth grade, wanting to be a rockstar not an athlete, the moment he knew he broke Jeremy McGrath's spirit during the '96 outdoor motocross championship, factory Yamaha not paying him enough to win, kicking Mike LaRacoo in the back, his factory salaries at Yamaha and Kawasaki, the moment he realized his professional racing career was truly over (two years after his major injury), and so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and being able to sit down and pick Emig's brain about what maybe the most iconic era of professional Supercross and motocross racing (The '90s). I would love to have Fro back for a part two to discuss the iconic motocross films he was apart of like Crusty Demons of Dirt , Thor's Full Power Trip and, of course, Frezno Smooth. Two years ago, Shane McElrath was battling Chase Sexton for a 250SX Regional Championship. Today, Sexton is a bright shining star in the sport with multiple 450 wins and championship potential of the highest order. McElrath, meanwhile, has been battling just to get a ride, anywhere. He missed most of the '21 season with a back injury, riding for SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas MotoConcepts Honda. Then he ended up on four different teams in 2022, including one that folded, two fill-in rides, and then a a shot at building a team with Rick Ware Racing for the new World Supercross Championship. It was thrown together quickly, but Shane emerged with the SX2 Championship. Now, finally, he thinks he has some stability for the future, and a chance to show what he can do. Jason Weigandt chats with Shane in this podcast. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Leatt.

Earlier this week, the FIM announced it entered a partnership with promotion group SX Global to create a new racing series, the FIM Supercross World Championship. Although SX Global is a new endeavor by Adam Bailey, Ryan Sanderson, and Tony Cochrane, the Australian group has a history of holding on Supercross races, has been involved with the FIM, and is experienced in motorsports. Bailey and Sanderson were behind the AUS-X Open in Australia and the S-X Open in New Zealand, events that boosted the sport in the Southern Hemisphere and acted as the FIM Oceania International Supercross Championship. Cochrane, meanwhile, served as the founding chairman of the V8 Supercars Championship and helped it become the premier motorsport series in Australia. We rang up Adam Bailey to learn more about the new series for this installment of the Midweek Podcast.
