Chelsea delivered their best away performance of the season at Villa Park, dismantling third-place Aston Villa with a breathtaking 4-1 win. Joao Pedro was unstoppable with a hat trick, Cole Palmer added his trademark quality, and for one brilliant afternoon Chelsea looked every inch a top-four side.Simon flies solo to break down a performance full of pace, precision, and genuine belief — the kind of display that makes the frustration of recent weeks all the more baffling. What changed? What does this mean for the Champions League race? And most importantly, can Chelsea actually sustain it this time?Simon also shares his unfiltered take on Saturday's FA Cup opponents Wrexham — the Hollywood club, the Ryan Reynolds project, and what it really means for English football when celebrity money meets pyramid romance. Expect opinions. Expect no diplomatic answers.
It's now just one win for Aston Villa in their last five fixtures at Villa Park and it seems as though a break in the schedule for Unai Emery's men may have arrived at the right time. This week I caught up with Cheltenham only's current professional boxer Louis Bacon to look ahead to a significant night in his fledgling career. On March 28th at GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester Louis, who's 23, steps up to six rounds for the first time. He'd previously only boxed 4 round contests in the pro ranks. Louis is also moving up in weight to 168 pounds (12 stone) or super-middleweight in light of the contest having a same-day weigh-in. Louis tells us about the physical challenges of working as a landscape gardener alongside his fight camp training, the financial outlay he has had over medical checks and licensing and the brass tacks business aspect of the the fight game - including delivering tickets by hand.I found this a fascinating insight into the life of someone making their way in the early stages of pro boxing and all the factors involved. At the time of recording Louis had a cold and we talked about the discipline of sometimes stepping off the gas when the body needs to recover. I'm planning to follow Gloucester Rugby March 28th at Villa Park in the Slater Cup, but I intend to try and get back in time to watch Louis box.

This is not about one result. It is about direction.Aston Villa remain in a strong league position, but the performances beneath it are raising legitimate questions. The defensive numbers are impressive. Only five goals conceded in 2026. Structure is there. Organisation is there.Fluency is not.Across recent weeks, Villa's open-play chance creation has dipped sharply. The xG numbers now align with what the eye test has been saying for some time. Games at Villa Park have become tight, tense, and dependent on moments rather than patterns. There is also context. The midfield spine has been disrupted. Kamara, Tielemans and McGinn missing together strips out control and tempo. Yet Unai Emery has left Pau Torres benched, a player whose progressive passing underpinned last season's best performances. But every contender has injuries. This episode asks the harder question: is this a temporary grind phase, or are we watching a team slowly stalling? The Wolves fixture looms large. Win it, and momentum returns. Lose it, and doubt spreads quickly into the Champions League race and beyond. This is the stage of the season where narratives harden.Momentum or meltdown? The next few weeks will tell us everything.UTVGet a Great NordVPN DealGet a cracking deal on NordVPN with four months FREE & a 30 days money-back guarantee here: nordvpn.com/momsGET AD-FREE SHOWS and JOIN MATCH CLUBGet ad-free shows and extra shows, and join My Old Man Said's 24/7 Villa community, Match Club. For more details and to become a member, click here: Become a MOMS MemberJoin the show's listener facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid Chris Budd - @BUDD_musicPhillip Shaw - @prsgameMy Old Man Said - https://www.myoldmansaid.comThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Aston Villa have granted the 1897 Group space inside Villa Park to help boost the atmosphere for the remainder of the league season. The fan group will be visible inside Villa Park with flags and banners during the final five home league games of the campaign, after the club's football staff - including Unai Emery and Damian Vidagany - encouraged efforts to enhance the matchday atmosphere.
After Leeds United conceded a late equaliser at the inexcusably expensive Villa Park we explore the fan channels to find fans less happy than us!
Leeds United moved one point closer to safety at Aston Villa, but should it have been three? In this week's Inside Elland Road Podcast, Graham Smyth and Chris O'Connor react to Leeds' draw with the Premier League's third best team, give Anton Stach the flowers he should have had on Match of the Day, and pick out the top performers at Villa Park. The pair also preview Leeds' clash with Manchester City, and make their score predictions for the Elland Road game.
With only 1 win in the last 4 Premier League fixtures at Villa Park, it feels as though there are more questions than answers surrounding Aston Villa these days. A free-kick worthy of winning any game from Anton Stach almost saw Leeds United earn a second away Premier League victory. Adam Pope & Kaiser Chiefs' bassist Simon Rix discuss the 1-1 draw at Villa Park.
Anton Stach scores a 35-yard free-kick stunner - his third of the season - but Tammy Abraham's 88th-minute equaliser denies Leeds all three points at Villa Park. We react to Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United, discuss Karl Darlow's incredible triple save, Farke's counter-attacking masterclass with just 33% possession, and ask whether two points were dropped or one gained. Plus, we preview Saturday's huge clash against Man City at Elland Road (5:30pm, Sky Sports). City are on a five-game winning streak and chasing Arsenal for the title - but Leeds showed in the 3-2 reverse fixture they can compete. Can Elland Road under the lights make the difference? We discuss team news, Stach's fitness, the goalkeeper dilemma and how to stop Erling Haaland. Leeds sit 15th with 31 points, six clear of the drop zone, with a massive run of home games coming up. James welcomes Aston Villa fan Lee Jackson and Leeds United fan Ed Salinger on to Clash of the Correspondents ahead of the meeting between the two clubs at Villa Park on Saturday. The title may look beyond Villa, but there's still plenty to play for as they try and hold on to a Champions League qualification spot and they will fancy their chances of going deep in the Europa League too. While for Leeds, despite sitting 15th and only 6 points above West Ham, the general consensus seems to be that they'll be fine after sustained period of positive results and performances. All the key FPL assets covered including defensive assets from both, Morgan Rogers, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. And there's plenty of reason to be interested in their assets, Villa have Wolves after Leeds and Leeds themselves have a great run beginning from GW29. It was a good day for Newcastle as they beat Villa in the 4th Round of the FA Cup, but the headlines were stolen by a staggering display from the officials at Villa Park. With no VAR in operation, the big question is unavoidable: have referees become too reliant on technology? Is VAR the worst thing ever introduced to the game? There was magic in the cup as Mansfield Town stunned Burnley to reach the Fifth Round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1975. The guys question Scott Parker's decision to make nine changes for the Clarets. Plus, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards debate whether Dominik Szoboszlai truly deserves the “world class” tag. And the big question… Gary, Alan or Harry Kane? The narrative to the FA Cup 4th round clash between Aston Villa and Newcastle United writes itself.Goalkeeper sent off. Game swings. Villa lose. End of story.Except it isn't that simple. This My Old Man Said post-mortem episode pulls apart the FA Cup tie from the moment of the red card onward and challenges the assumption that it was automatically over. Yes, the dismissal changed the balance. Yes, momentum shifted. But knockout football is rarely decided by a single flashpoint. The discussion centres on what Villa did next. The shape change. The substitutions. The tempo. The psychological reaction. Did Villa protect the game properly? Did they give up too quickly? Were there moments to reset that went unused? There is frustration, but not hysteria. Context matters. The red card altered the task, it did not remove it. We look at the fine margins that separate resilience from resignation. The bigger question running through the show is this:When the situation turns against you in a cup tie, how long do you stay in it?Villa were tested. The red card hurt. But the tie still required managing. What happened at Villa Park does once again throw up questions of both the character of the Villa team and what role does the FA Cup plays now in football?UTVGet a Great NordVPN DealGet a cracking deal on NordVPN with four months FREE & a 30 days money-back guarantee here: nordvpn.com/momsGET AD-FREE SHOWS and JOIN MATCH CLUBGet ad-free shows and extra shows, and join My Old Man Said's 24/7 Villa community, Match Club. Villa Park has its hero back. In a move that's sent a "tactical tremor" through the Premier League, Unai Emery has secured Tammy Abraham for a clinical €21 million. Beyond The Breakdown is back with Jacob The Gowler Gowler and Matt The Allard Allard - and this week the focus is firmly on ArsenalThey examined the job Keith Andrews has done and how his philosophy is now fully embedded in this Brentford side. The main event, though, is that incredible performance against Arsenal - a display that disrupted their title charge and, on another day, should absolutely have delivered all three pointsThe lads go deep on the tactical detail - Keane Lewis-Potter's disciplined defensive role, how Brentford repeatedly played through Arsenal's press, Van den Berg's standout display, and what Collins being benched again tells usThere's analysis of the smash-and-grab at Villa Park too - exposing the high line and soft man-marking - before a proper deep dive into the statement win at St James' Park. The Ouattara and Lewis-Potter switch, the in-game shift to 4-4-2, Tonali's early freedom and how it was curtailed, plus the stats that show Brentford earned every bit of itFinally, they run the numbers on Brighton, Burnley and Bournemouth. Are these favourable fixtures? Why do Brentford always seem to get the better of Bournemouth? And how many points are realistically on the table?Stats. Tactics. Big calls. Proper Breakdown Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It was flat. It was tense. It was not one for the purists or season highlights. But it was three points.Aston Villa laboured past Brighton in a game that never quite caught light. Tempo was slow, rhythm inconsistent, and the usual midfield control absent. Large spells felt like two teams cancelling each other out rather than one asserting itself. Then came the decisive moment.A late corner, a near-post run, and Tyrone Mings making sure someone attacked the space properly. In a match short on incision, it took authority rather than invention to break it.The performance lacked fluency. Brighton limited Villa's creativity and exposed the absence of key midfield leaders. There were groans at over-elaboration and impatience at predictable build-up. Even the atmosphere reflected it, with noticeable empty seats and tension around ticket pricing bubbling beneath the surface. But the table does not ask how.Villa are still third and the Champions League conversation remains real. And at this stage of the campaign, winning without playing well can matter more than anything else.Ugly at home. Effective when it counted.UTVGet a Great NordVPN DealGet a cracking deal on NordVPN with four months FREE & a 30 days money-back guarantee here: nordvpn.com/momsGET AD-FREE SHOWS and JOIN MATCH CLUBGet ad-free shows and extra shows, and join My Old Man Said's 24/7 Villa community, Match Club. For more details and to become a member, click here: Become a MOMS MemberJoin the show's listener facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid Chris Budd - @BUDD_musicMy Old Man Said - https://www.myoldmansaid.comThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Unai Emery needs Villa Park to be at its brilliant best to build momentum in a crucial part of the season. On this week's Claret & Brew: An open discussion on the atmosphere at Villa Park.
On this week's episode, Craig, Dan and Callum reflect on ANOTHER HUGE win away from home in the Premier League, this time at Newcastle. The Bees travelled to St. James' Park on the back of a special victory at Villa Park, and ended up victorious yet again on the road. Newcastle took the lead against the run of the play, before Vitaly Janelt and Igor Thiago completed a first half turnaround. The hosts equalised in the second half, but Dango Ouattara's 85th minute strike ensured we'd travel back to West London with all three points. Across the Seas but Forever Bees - An American Brentford Podcast
The pure fantasy continues unabated as we follow a gutsy win at Villa Park with our first win at Newcastle since 1934. Greville Waterman and Tim Searls are in studio to look back at a match at St. James Park that had more improbable twists than a Harry Potter novel. Confess: Who rubbed that genie lamp and wished for all this 15 years ago? The small task of Arsenal is up ahead of us, but we're Brentford. Humble but brave, as the former manager used to say. Text the pod! I'd love to hear from you directly as well - please email me at timsearls@hotmail.com.

On this week's episode, Craig and Dan reflect on the MASSIVE 1-0 win away at Aston Villa. It looked as though our winless run at Villa Park was set to continue after Kevin Schade's first half red card for a kick out at Matty Cash. But Dango Ouattara's first goal since returning from AFCON, coupled with a huge defensive shift in the second half, meant Keith Andrews masterminded Brentford's third win over Villa this season. We chat about the red card incident, defending as a unit, and the upcoming trip to Newcastle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
