Aston Villa beat Liverpool 4-2 at Villa Park on Friday evening, sealing Champions League qualification through the league and sending supporters into the Istanbul week in exactly the right frame of mind. The game that looked like a distraction turned into the best possible preparation. This week's My Old Man Said Post-Mortem opens with the moment that changed everything: the teamsheet. When Emery named the side that beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the European semi-final — essentially the expected starting lineup for Wednesday — the game instantly became something else. Not a Premier League fixture to be survived before the main event. The version of Ollie Watkins that turned up against Liverpool needs to be sent First Class to Istanbul. The aggressive one who fires up the crowd from corners, gives teammates a dressing-down when they get something wrong, and is sharp in front of goal. The version Villa supporters have been asking for all season. He produced a brace and an offside goal that said as much as the goals that counted. The main difference between the two teams was seen in the attitude of Alexis Mac Allister compared to John McGinn - one was cheaply rolling around feigning injury, while the other gave everything in a commanding performance. Champions League football is now sealed for Villa and Istanbul is set up nicely. The mood is right. The squad is sharp and firing.UTVListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Aston Villa face Liverpool at Villa Park on Friday evening — the last Premier League fixture before the Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday. Champions League qualification still isn't mathematically confirmed through the league. It should already be wrapped up. It isn't. And that shapes everything about how the Liverpool game needs to be approached — not as a send-off but as unfinished business. The reality is though, Unai Emery and his players will rest up, but will there be at least enough application to make a fight of the game? This week's main show of the My Old Man Said podcast covers the ground before and after the game. Amadou Onana is touch and go off for Istanbul, Victor Lindelöf likely steps in again, and there's a brief but unavoidable discussion of the Wes Edens extortion story that's currently generating more headlines than any transfer activity.Emery's Clipboard goes long on Ollie Watkins — who has just been named Aston Villa's Player of the Month for April, a month where he bagged his 100th Villa goal. The show sets that form against a wider argument: where have all the English strikers gone? The numbers go back to 1992-93, and the conclusion is pointed. The Liverpool preview is the centrepiece. An aging squad, Mohamed Salah's dramatic decline in output, the Trent departure mismanaged, and a team that doesn't work hard without the ball. The show finishes on the Aston Villa Existential Question: how many new players does this squad actually need in the starting eleven next season?Istanbul might be a full stop, for this team, with a new era to launch afterwards.UTVListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Villa beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 at Villa Park to reach the Europa League final in Istanbul. Freiburg await. One more job to do to end 30-years of hurt. Some nights you have a feeling about before a ball is kicked. On a European night, not many English grounds can hold a candle to Villa Park on a European night. The atmosphere was electric and the players on the pitch also made sure they made it an unforgettable night, as well — four goals, a complete performance, and a European final earned in the most emphatic fashion possible. In this episode the show breaks down a night that had everything. Buendia's unpredictability unlocking the tightest defence in the Premier League's last six games. Watkins aggressive, physical, the version of himself that makes Villa a different team. McGinn having the time of his life, as the autumn of his career is hitting its highest notes. And the Victor Lindelöf decision, questioned beforehand, vindicated completely. There is also a broader conversation about what this moment means. Also, we look at Freiburg, Villa's silverware drought, and the prospect of a Super Cup, if all goes to plan.Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Wolfie looks back at what was a disappointing 2nd leg Semi Final defeat to Aston Villa! Subscribe to TFN https://www.youtube.com/@TheFootyNetwork?sub_confirmation=1 A dream turned into a nightmare at Villa Park. Join Wolfie for a raw and unfiltered reaction as Nottingham Forest's European journey comes to a crushing end after a 4-0 second-leg defeat to Aston Villa. Despite holding a slender lead from the first leg, the Reds simply couldn't handle the intensity as a first-half strike from Ollie Watkins and a second-half collapse—including an Emi Buendía penalty and a John McGinn double—wiped out our aggregate advantage in a matter of minutes. It's a bitter pill to swallow after being so close to a historic final, and we're breaking down exactly where it all went wrong on a night that promised so much. We're asking the tough questions: can we point to the injuries, particularly the loss of Morgan Gibbs-White who remained on the bench following that head injury against Chelsea, or were Villa just too good on the night? The tactical setup will be under the microscope as we debate whether the players gave enough or if the pressure of the occasion led to that second-half capitulation. It's time to be honest about the performance and what this means for the momentum Pereira has built. Jump into the comments and let us know your thoughts—did we bottle it, or was the task just too great without our talisman? COYR. #nffc #nottinghamforest #astonvilla Learn more about your ad choices. Before the biggest night at Villa Park in years, a solo My Old Man Said show, with some personal memories and reflections back to 1994, and an honest assessment of what the second leg of the Europa League semi-final requires. In 1994, Villa were three-nil down at Tranmere in a League Cup semi-final first leg. The fanbase were feeling angry that the club were squandering a real good chance of silverware to put them back on the map, after a difficult decade. The build up to the second leg has parallels, as does the build-up to the final against Manchester United, when Villa's league form had dropped off a cliff before the trip to Wembley. It was all an example of what a team is capable of when it decides to be.Recorded in the hours leading up to the Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest, the show sets out what tonight requires — from Watkins, from Rogers, from McGinn and Tielemans, from the crowd, and from a manager who has four of these trophies already. The Onana absence. The Bogarde question. Whether Forest come to shut up shop or play with the freedom that has defined their recent form. And what it would mean - for the club, for its European legacy, for everything - to be talking about Istanbul tomorrow morning. No rally call. No clichés. Nottingham Forest were destroyed by Aston Villa as it finished 4-0 at Villa Park in the semi-final second leg of the Europa League. Forest lead 1-0 after Chris Wood's penalty and are unbeaten in 10 games but were taken apart on the night with Murillo, Ola Aina, Ibrahim Sangare and Morgan Gibbs-White all unable to start. #NFFC #nottingham Forest. Matt Davies is joined straight after the game by Chris Aylmer and former Reds B team midfielder Sam Collins to discuss the game in full.
What happened against Spurs on Sunday night? Unai Emery elected to shuffle his pack, and there were seven changes, but the line-up wasn't too dissimilar from the one that beat Fenerbahçe away 1-0 in the Europa League. The back four was the same apart from the left-back; the base of the midfield was the same with Bogarde next to Tieliemans, with Sancho and Rogers further forward, and Barkley and Abraham in instead of Watkins and Buendia (who both did come on), but they have been patchy at best anyway. At least against Spurs, you also had Martinez in goal, as Bizot played in Turkey.Nobody complained about the line-up as they tackled a tough trip to Istanbul. It was the effort and application of the players that let the team down, not the team sheet. The performance was indefensible, regardless of Thursday.Conor Gallagher, who had not scored for Spurs all season, scored. Richarlison, who had never scored against Villa, scored. When Buendia's consolation header arrived in the ninety-fifth minute — it was Villa's first shot on target of the entire game.In this episode the show does not dress it up. The performance was an embarrassment. The team that started was good enough, every player a full international bar one and they put in absolutely nothing. Emery's programme notes talked about laser focus and determination. His body language on the touchline told a different story. The harder question is what it means for Thursday. With Forest a goal up from the first leg. Villa need to score at least twice at Villa Park to win without penallties. The crowd that was asked to put up with ninety minutes of nothing against Spurs is now being asked to roar the team into a European final.Everything on the line on Thursday night at Villa Park and only a win can banish what happened against Spurs before it.Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Nottingham Forest take a 1-0 lead to Villa Park as they host Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final second leg. It's a slender advantage but Forest go into the game on the back of a 10 match unbeaten run and five wins in a row. Villa are fifth in the Premier League and have lost three games in a row but can Forest make it to the final in Istanbul? Their cause would certainly be helped if Morgan Gibbs-White, Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare and Dan Ndoye are passed fit. #nffc #nottinghamforest Matt Davies is joined by Dan Cook and Steve Battlemuch to preview the game in full.

Aston Villa, fifth in the league, didn't manage a single 0.00 of xG against us in the entire first half. Zero. A Licensed Coach JJ joins me to break down exactly how this Spurs team strangled Aston Villa for 45 minutes at Villa Park, and what Roberto De Zerbi has actually changed in four games. We get into the press, why the team has been so deliberately slowed down, why Pedro Porro is staying rooted as a full-back for now, why Bentancur and Palhinha suddenly look like a working double pivot when they didn't under Frank, and the bit JJ wanted to jump up and down screaming "I told you so" about. Plus the press-baiting concept properly explained — what it is, why it's hard to do at home, and why Villa were patient enough not to take the bait. PPDA, xGA, the metrics that matter and the ones that don't. The Buendía corner that Van de Ven won't enjoy watching back. And why the set-piece defending is a slower fix than the rest. For the Oso 33 crew sticking to the end — JJ on a question we got asked: why do so many number 10s become great number 6s? JJ takes us through it from his own playing days. It's a lovely bit. A Coach's View is the tactical strand from Oh So Spurs — Jim Goddard with A Licensed Coach JJ, dissecting what's actually happening on the pitch with Tottenham Hotspur week to week. Smarter than the angry-pundit register, but still fans, with the suffering and cautious belief that comes with it. If you got something out of the episode, please follow the show, drop us a rating, and share it with a Spurs fan who'd appreciate the tactical layer. And to the Oh-So-33 crew — keep it lily-white. Nottingham Forest look to have secured their Premier League safety after a brilliant 3-1 win at Chelsea with a heavily changed team. That made it 10 games unbeaten ahead of the Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa on Thursday night. Forest have all the momentum and a 1-0 lead but also have injury worries around key men including Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare and Morgan Gibbs-White, who suffered a nasty cut at Stamford Bridge. Matt Davies is joined by Pete Blackburn and former Reds defender Kelvin Wilson to look back on the Chelsea game, reflect on the brilliant turnaround under Vitor Pereira and look ahead to the game at Villa Park. #nffc #nottinghamforest
Spurs have delivered back to back wins and climbed out of the relegation zone with three matches to play. We break down the thrilling performance at Villa Park and where things stand. Plus, a win for Spurs Women and some notable farewells as they look to their future. #thfc #coys #tottenham #spurs
Jack is joined by Baker to celebrate a genuinely massive, potentially season-altering victory as Tottenham Hotspur's win at Villa Park lifts them out of the Premier League relegation zone. Pushing back against the incredibly lazy outside narrative that a heavily rotated Villa side simply 'threw the game', the lads choose instead to focus on the undeniable tactical and mental improvements shown by Spurs. We explore the growing influence of Roberto De Zerbi, dissecting Conor Gallagher's revealing post-match comments about the manager's emotional intelligence and the one-on-one man-management that finally seems to be inspiring a broken dressing room. With the sheer terror of the drop slightly easing, Jack and Baker look ahead to the nerve-wracking final run-in. We compare Tottenham's remaining fixtures against Leeds, Chelsea, and Everton with West Ham's daunting schedule, asking when we can actually let ourselves believe that survival is secured. There's also time for debating whether the all-consuming, exhausting dread of a relegation dogfight has actually provided a strange silver lining by completely numbing us to the pain of Arsenal's pursuit of major trophies. 5-5-26 Tonight we're hanging with Tony Qualls. Tony is meadmaker/owner of Manic Meadery and brewer/owner of Gnosis Brewing. And he puts on the Sugarbelt Mead Festival every year. A busy guy! Tony is not just a meadery owner, he's also a musician. He toured in the band Groovatron for 12 years, doing over 1500 shows in 12 years (makes me tired just thinking about all that travel!). In April 2024, Tony and the gang opened Gnosis Brewing, also in Merrillville, Indiana. Founded by Tony, Keith, Eric, Adam, and Brandon, the brewery embodies an unending quest for beer perfection, continually evolving to delight both new craft beer enthusiasts and seasoned connoisseurs. With a commitment to quality over quantity, Gnosis Brewing rigorously tests each beer recipe through multiple batches and trials before it reaches the customer. The brewery aims to push the boundaries of traditional brewing, ensuring that every release meets their high standards of excellence. Tony is a lifelong entrepreneur, having run a vinyl record company, painting company and a bunch of other businesses. Plus he's a skilled tradesman in welding and carpentry (that would help with build out!). Tony has been married to his lovely wife Vanessa for 12 years, and they have two kids. Not to sit on his laurels, Tony plans to pursue law school and recording backlogs of musical material while running his meadery (getting tired again, lol). He likes to mountain bike and ride his motorcycle in his free time (he has free time?). Tony co-founded Manic Meadery with Keith Cantwell in 2018 in Crown Point, Indiana. Manic is a small batch meadery, and they also do wine and cider. They've gotten a lot of interest in their sweet dessert meads using whole fruit and often multiple adjuncts. Tony is also a BJCP mead judge, and holder of Mazer Cup awards for both home and commercial mead. The plans for Manic in 2020 include increasing self distribution, expanding their production space, and organizing a mead-only festival, the Sugarbelt Mead Fest. It was a blur of a weekend, with seismic results all over Europe! Musa and Ryan begin with Barcelona and Lyonnes getting past Bayern and Arsenal to make it to the UWCL final in Oslo (03:09), moving onto Inter securing their 21st Scudetto (11:37), Venezia making it back to Serie A and more, before heading to the Premier League.Manchester United secured Champions League football for next season (28:31), following their 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, so there's chat about that as well as Liverpool's situation. Spurs made it two wins in two to get out of the relegation zone after their win at Villa Park and Bournemouth are one of Europe's most in form teams. Meanwhile, at the top, Arsenal had some key players back and looked sharper than they have in months to beat Fulham 3-0 and go six points clear (50:18) and there's a lot of praise for Myles Lewis-Skelly's performance, starting in midfield for the first time. Finally, there's some Bundesliga chat (56:33), as St. Pauli dropped into the relegation spots and Schalke won promotion back to the top flight.Don't forget to check out kickbacksoccer.com and tickets for our July live show, with Nish Kumar at the Southbank Centre, are available here. For more podcasts, ad-free and in full, plus access to the Stadio Social Club and much more, you can become a Stadio member by signing up at patreon.com/stadio. Steff, Milo and Gareth are enjoying the rare air of a vital win at Villa Park. Villa Park. Fifth in the league. But they had zero xG in the first half. Zero. And we were two goals up. It was, it was special. A full-house Originals panel back together for this one — Johnny over in beautiful Dublin, Si in Switzerland, our ray of sunshine Stu in Dubai, and DJ in sunny California — for a proper reaction to Aston Villa 1–2 Spurs at Villa Park and the four games of De Zerbi so far. We've had this conversation every three months, haven't we? But is this one different? Please tell us it's different. So we get into the data (xG against nearly halved, pressing up vs both Frank and Tudor, the back four launching the build-up), the lads who look like completely different players under De Zerbi (Gallagher, Van de Ven, Palhinha, Bentancur, Kinsky), and even Stu's allowing himself to get a little bit excited for once. Plus your questions — the Roberto-wan-Kenobi one (do we give the club credit for landing him?), whether we've got any transfer window pull despite no Europe, who stays if we stay up, the Maddison-vs-Leeds debate, and frankly the best listener question of the lot: is this De Zerbi run actually the best pre-pre-season a new manager could ask for? If you've been through this season with us, please follow the show, drop us a rating, and share it with a fellow Spurs fan who's starting to believe again. And to the Oh-So-33 crew — keep it lily-white. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Spurs are out of the relegation zone thanks to an accomplished and incredibly encouraging performance away at Villa Park... we've looked down and out at points this season, and injuries to key players threatened to derail it all even further, but Roberto De Zerbi has found a way to get this lot going. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by Musician Jah Wobble along with Jonathan Hamme and Ian Lubin as Roberto De Zerbi has warned Tottenham's relegation rivals not to count them out and promised there will be no crying at the club over more injury problems this season. Ahead of Sunday's trip to Aston Villa, De Zerbi started his press conference with a four-minute monologue about silencing negativity and reiterated his belief 18th-placed Tottenham can stay up. We discuss his rallying cry and further detail and debate and discuss whether he can still keep Spurs up, in a pivotal weekend of fixtures for Spurs. Spurs will be without at least eight players at Villa Park with Guglielmo Vicario still ruled out, Dominic Solanke missing with hamstring injury but Destiny Udogie back available, as we round-up the latest injury news going into Villa Park. We discuss the courage and bravery shown from Antonín Kinský as he continues between the sticks for Spurs in the absence of Vicario, as we build-up to our crucial meeting at Villa Park on Sunday and whether the Midlands Club commitments in European Competition could affect them at all going into Sunday. One is bottom and just lost to a team that hasn't won in four months, the other was just beaten 5-0 at home. On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Wolves fan Bradley Parker and Sunderland fan Spencer Barrowman to discuss the mood at their clubs ahead of Saturday's meeting at Molineux. Wolves relegation has been inevitable but a late winter/early Spring upturn in form and results has been followed by three consecutive defeats without scoring against teams placed 15th, 17th and 18th in the table. What's happened to the positivity prior to the International break? The team in 16th just trounced Sunderland at The Stadium of Light 5-0, which followed on from conceding four at Villa Park, when they also were on a positive run previously. There's discussion one hat remains and early thoughts on next season, including whether the managers will still be there. Plus, FPL discussion on enablers that perhaps shouldn't necessarily be overlooked. Especially, as they're playing each other. Some Villa supporters have spent the week since the Fulham defeat getting increasingly pessimistic about the Europa League semi-final tie against Nottingham Forest. Especially after the Tricky Trees tonked Sunderland 5-0 in their own backyard. Have they forgotten about Unai Emery's record in this tournament? In a first impressions solo preview, My Old Man Said host David Michael takes a clear-eyed look at the reasons for genuine confidence, and what Villa actually need from the first leg at the City Ground to set up Villa Park for the occasion it deserves.UTVListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Aston Villa fan Lee Jackson and Tottenham fan Ricky Saunders to discuss the latest at their clubs ahead of Sunday night's meeting at Villa Park. Villa should have a top 5 place all but sealed despite Saturday's defeat at Fulham, but is the priority now the Europa League with their all English semi final with Nottingham Forest on the horizon? Does that give Tottenham, stuck in the relegation zone and depleted by further injuries, a chance at Villa? And can they get out of this and stay up? Plus, all the key FPL assets covered including expected minutes moving forward for Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, if Antonin Kinsky will keep his place in goal and if 'Relegation Richy' should be sought for the run-in.
