Aston Villa's Champions League league-phase opponents are confirmed: Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Fenerbahçe and Viking all visit Villa Park, while Villa face trips to Barcelona, Club Brugge (again), Galatasaray and Slavia Prague. We assess what lies ahead for the rebuilt Villa team, fixture by fixture: from the reality of an away day at a two-thirds-rebuilt Camp Nou to the banana skin potential of an organised Viking side at Villa Park. Could another European away day to Brugge actually be a blessing in disguise? There's also a third trip this year for Unai Emery's boys to Istanbul. None of it is straightforward to call. This is a Champions League campaign where it is hard to judge expectations of a team we haven't seen play yet, as the players are still being signed and coming through the door. Despite that factor, we judge the difficulty of what lies ahead and what's needed to progress.UTVNew Adidas Originals collection and away kit out now Get extra months free and huge savings on a two-year NordVPN plan here Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. The Joy of Football
Premier League PREDICTIONS - Pt.1

The Joy of Football

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2026 93:01

On this week's episode of The Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett begin their 2026/27 Premier League season preview, taking an in-depth look at the first ten clubs alphabetically as the new campaign approaches. From champions Arsenal and a reshaped Chelsea, to newly promoted Coventry City, European hopefuls and teams simply looking to survive, Martin and Neil assess the transfers, managers, expectations and biggest questions facing each club. The preview begins with reigning Premier League champions Arsenal, as Martin and Neil discuss Mikel Arteta's attempts to retain the title following a season which also saw the Gunners reach the Champions League Final. New arrivals including Bruno Guimarães are assessed, while the pair discuss Arsenal's unsuccessful pursuit of Vinícius Júnior, whether the Premier League is still attracting the world's biggest individual stars, and whether a long domestic and European campaign followed by the FIFA World Cup could finally catch up with Arteta's squad. Attention then turns to Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton. Unai Emery faces another period of change at Villa Park following the departures of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Martin and Neil assess whether Villa can maintain their place among Europe's elite. They also look at Bournemouth's latest rebuild, Brentford's attempts to build on an impressive season and Brighton's seemingly endless ability to identify new talent while continuing to compete in Europe. In Martin's Letter From The Gantry, Martin returns to the commentary box for Colchester United against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, but the story extends far beyond the result. Following Southampton's expulsion from the Championship playoffs and the fallout from their controversial "Spygate" scandal, Martin reflects on a club attempting to rebuild trust, recover from an extraordinary punishment and turn adversity into motivation for another promotion challenge. The Premier League preview then resumes with Chelsea, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham. Chelsea begin a new era under Xabi Alonso after a dramatic summer of transfer activity, including the British record arrival of Morgan Rogers, while former Chelsea captain and manager Frank Lampard prepares to lead Championship winners Coventry back into the Premier League. Martin and Neil assess what constitutes success for both clubs before turning their attention to Crystal Palace, Everton and Fulham. Away from the individual clubs, Martin and Neil attempt to make sense of the Premier League's new financial landscape. With Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) replaced by Squad Cost Ratio rules (SCR), they explain the new spending limits and debate whether football's financial regulations genuinely protect clubs or simply make it harder for ambitious sides such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa to challenge the established elite. Finally, with the Premier League season rapidly approaching, the pair debate one of the biggest consequences of the summer's FIFA World Cup. Players involved in the latter stages of the tournament are only now returning to their clubs, leaving some with just two weeks of pre-season training before the new campaign begins. Is that enough preparation for a Premier League footballer, or are clubs risking injuries and exhaustion before the season has even properly started? Martin and Neil, unsurprisingly, don't quite agree. #PremierLeague #PremierLeaguePreview #PremierLeague2026 #MartinTyler #FootballPodcast #Arsenal #Chelsea #AstonVilla #CoventryCity #CrystalPalace #Everton #Fulham #Brighton #Brentford #Bournemouth #MikelArteta #XabiAlonso #FrankLampard #MorganRogers #BrunoGuimaraes #ViniciusJunior #TransferNews #FIFAWorldCup #PSR #Football #TheJoyOfFootball Hosted by The Revive Lounge Ltd UCsdye1hUxP4xhgBx9zvuSjg Subscribe to https://youtube.com/@TheReviveLounge?si=L5ddzrJrtSmErtJ5 Support the Pod https://patreon.com/TheJoysofFootballPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink Read us on Substack https://martintylerandneilbarnett.substack.com/ Follow our Twitter https://x.com/TheJOF Follow our Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@joy_of_football_pod?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Follow our Instagram https://https://www.instagram.com/joy_of_football_pod/ Contact us via: therevivelounge@gmail.com Music by Arron Clague - https://www.instagram.com/arronclague?igsh=aHg1bjQ3OHpmaXIz Intro Sequence by Wellong Sadewo (wells.illustration): https://www.instagram.com/wells.illustration/ A massive thank you to our Patreon Supporters: Nick Parmenter Hillary Abbott Daniel Butigan Tommy Mck Katie Watson Nathan A Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Pete, Tom Fordyce and Sids react to England making it through the World Cup group stages and look ahead to the knockout rounds. The lads discuss where England sit among the tournament favourites, whether stronger opposition might actually suit them better, and why Marcus Rashford, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane could still have a major role to play as the tournament opens up.There is also plenty of classic nonsense along the way. Sids talks through his unexpectedly therapeutic trip to an LA laundrette, Tom reveals how he accidentally got into a swimming pool on a senior citizen discount, and the lads lose themselves in an obscure 90s footballer rabbit hole before attempting their best David Beckham eyebrow impressions. The boys are then joined by Aston Villa legend and former Colombia international Juan Pablo Ángel. Pablo reflects on arriving at Villa from River Plate, landing in England without speaking the language, being unveiled at Villa Park before the move was even fully signed, and adapting to the speed, pressure and culture of the Premier League. He also opens up on growing up in Medellín, learning football on the streets, the intensity of Boca Juniors vs River Plate, representing Colombia, scoring against Brazil and Argentina, and why MLS is far more competitive than many people realise. The lads also return for another round of Paddy Power Chaos Cards, reviewing the latest leaderboard after LeBron James' unlikely contribution, before making their predictions for the next round of World Cup action. With bonus points on the line and bragging rights at stake, there's no shortage of confidence, controversy and classic TPCP chaos. As always, leave your comments below and let us know who you'd love to see in the Chumbawamba next!00:00 Intro00:38 LA adventures03:00 England's World Cup hopes12:21 Juan Pablo Ángel joins20:01 Growing up in Colombia25:59 Boca vs River32:14 Aston Villa & the Premier League38:26 Playing for Colombia43:58 Building MLS49:00 Quickfire questions51:50 Brummie accent challenge53:30 Farewell to Juan Pablo Ángel53:45 Starkey in CANADA?56:33 Paddy Power Chaos Card01:10:45 Looking ahead to the knockoutsFor more Peter Crouch:Twitter - https://twitter.com/petercrouchTherapy Crouch - https://www.youtube.com/@thetherapycrouchFor more Chris Stark:Twitter - https://twitter.com/Chris_StarkInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisstark/For more Steve Sidwell:Twitter - https://twitter.com/sjsidwellInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14For more Tom Fordyce:Twitter - https://twitter.com/tomfordyce#PeterCrouch #ThatPeterCrouchPodcast #JuanPabloAngel Hosted on Acast. On today's episode of the Loaded Radio Daily Breakdown, host Scott Penfold delivers a high-octane, laid-back look at the absolute biggest stories trending across the hard rock and metal grids over the last 48 hours.  First up, we unpack the massive operational news coming out of France tonight. Iron Maiden is taking over the La Défense Arena in Paris to professionally film their upcoming "Run For Your Lives" world tour concert movie. The catch? Management is enforcing a strict phone-free General Admission floor using lockable Yondr pouches. We break down the logistics, the fan reaction, and what this means for the future of stadium rock etiquette. Next, we look at a major shake-up on the European festival circuit. Anthrax and Pantera drum titan Charlie Benante has been sidelined by a right-hand injury. Following strict doctor's orders to rest from June 20 to July 4, Charlie will sit out massive summer milestones including Hellfest, Copenhell, and select dates supporting Iron Maiden. We talk about his phenomenal UK fill-in Darby Todd (Devin Townsend, Robert Plant) and map out Charlie's scheduled return date in Lisbon. Finally, we head to Birmingham to mark an incredibly poignant milestone. As the metal world approaches the one-year anniversary of the Prince of Darkness' passing, Ozzy Osbourne's iconic, bat-winged gothic throne is heading to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Synced with the massively successful "Working Class Hero" exhibition, we look back at the history of the throne—built for his 2024 Hall of Fame induction and last seen on stage at Black Sabbath's legendary final "Back To The Beginning" farewell concert at Villa Park on July 5, 2025.  Stream the daily tracking report now! Aston Villa's Best Possible Istanbul Preparation as Watkins Fires Up and Champions League is Confirmed

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2026 25:59

Aston Villa beat Liverpool 4-2 at Villa Park on Friday evening, sealing Champions League qualification through the league and sending supporters into the Istanbul week in exactly the right frame of mind. The game that looked like a distraction turned into the best possible preparation. This week's My Old Man Said Post-Mortem opens with the moment that changed everything: the teamsheet. When Emery named the side that beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the European semi-final — essentially the expected starting lineup for Wednesday — the game instantly became something else. Not a Premier League fixture to be survived before the main event. The version of Ollie Watkins that turned up against Liverpool needs to be sent First Class to Istanbul. The aggressive one who fires up the crowd from corners, gives teammates a dressing-down when they get something wrong, and is sharp in front of goal. The version Villa supporters have been asking for all season. He produced a brace and an offside goal that said as much as the goals that counted. The main difference between the two teams was seen in the attitude of Alexis Mac Allister compared to John McGinn - one was cheaply rolling around feigning injury, while the other gave everything in a commanding performance. Champions League football is now sealed for Villa and Istanbul is set up nicely. The mood is right. Aston Villa face Liverpool at Villa Park on Friday evening — the last Premier League fixture before the Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday. Champions League qualification still isn't mathematically confirmed through the league. It should already be wrapped up. It isn't. And that shapes everything about how the Liverpool game needs to be approached — not as a send-off but as unfinished business. The reality is though, Unai Emery and his players will rest up, but will there be at least enough application to make a fight of the game? This week's main show of the My Old Man Said podcast covers the ground before and after the game. Amadou Onana is touch and go off for Istanbul, Victor Lindelöf likely steps in again, and there's a brief but unavoidable discussion of the Wes Edens extortion story that's currently generating more headlines than any transfer activity.Emery's Clipboard goes long on Ollie Watkins — who has just been named Aston Villa's Player of the Month for April, a month where he bagged his 100th Villa goal. The show sets that form against a wider argument: where have all the English strikers gone? The numbers go back to 1992-93, and the conclusion is pointed. The Liverpool preview is the centrepiece. An aging squad, Mohamed Salah's dramatic decline in output, the Trent departure mismanaged, and a team that doesn't work hard without the ball. The show finishes on the Aston Villa Existential Question: how many new players does this squad actually need in the starting eleven next season?Istanbul might be a full stop, for this team, with a new era to launch afterwards.UTVListen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Villa beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 at Villa Park to reach the Europa League final in Istanbul. Freiburg await. One more job to do to end 30-years of hurt. Some nights you have a feeling about before a ball is kicked. On a European night, not many English grounds can hold a candle to Villa Park on a European night. The atmosphere was electric and the players on the pitch also made sure they made it an unforgettable night, as well — four goals, a complete performance, and a European final earned in the most emphatic fashion possible. In this episode the show breaks down a night that had everything. Buendia's unpredictability unlocking the tightest defence in the Premier League's last six games. Watkins aggressive, physical, the version of himself that makes Villa a different team. McGinn having the time of his life, as the autumn of his career is hitting its highest notes. And the Victor Lindelöf decision, questioned beforehand, vindicated completely. There is also a broader conversation about what this moment means. Also, we look at Freiburg, Villa's silverware drought, and the prospect of a Super Cup, if all goes to plan.Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. Before the biggest night at Villa Park in years, a solo My Old Man Said show, with some personal memories and reflections back to 1994, and an honest assessment of what the second leg of the Europa League semi-final requires. In 1994, Villa were three-nil down at Tranmere in a League Cup semi-final first leg. The fanbase were feeling angry that the club were squandering a real good chance of silverware to put them back on the map, after a difficult decade. The build up to the second leg has parallels, as does the build-up to the final against Manchester United, when Villa's league form had dropped off a cliff before the trip to Wembley. It was all an example of what a team is capable of when it decides to be.Recorded in the hours leading up to the Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest, the show sets out what tonight requires — from Watkins, from Rogers, from McGinn and Tielemans, from the crowd, and from a manager who has four of these trophies already. The Onana absence. The Bogarde question. Whether Forest come to shut up shop or play with the freedom that has defined their recent form. And what it would mean - for the club, for its European legacy, for everything - to be talking about Istanbul tomorrow morning. No rally call. No clichés. What happened against Spurs on Sunday night? Unai Emery elected to shuffle his pack, and there were seven changes, but the line-up wasn't too dissimilar from the one that beat Fenerbahçe away 1-0 in the Europa League. The back four was the same apart from the left-back; the base of the midfield was the same with Bogarde next to Tieliemans, with Sancho and Rogers further forward, and Barkley and Abraham in instead of Watkins and Buendia (who both did come on), but they have been patchy at best anyway. At least against Spurs, you also had Martinez in goal, as Bizot played in Turkey.Nobody complained about the line-up as they tackled a tough trip to Istanbul. It was the effort and application of the players that let the team down, not the team sheet. The performance was indefensible, regardless of Thursday.Conor Gallagher, who had not scored for Spurs all season, scored. Richarlison, who had never scored against Villa, scored. When Buendia's consolation header arrived in the ninety-fifth minute — it was Villa's first shot on target of the entire game.In this episode the show does not dress it up. The performance was an embarrassment. The team that started was good enough, every player a full international bar one and they put in absolutely nothing. Emery's programme notes talked about laser focus and determination. His body language on the touchline told a different story. The harder question is what it means for Thursday. With Forest a goal up from the first leg. Villa need to score at least twice at Villa Park to win without penallties. The crowd that was asked to put up with ninety minutes of nothing against Spurs is now being asked to roar the team into a European final.Everything on the line on Thursday night at Villa Park and only a win can banish what happened against Spurs before it.Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Become a MOMS Member for ad-free & extra shows - MOMS MembershipJoin the show's listener Facebook group The Mad Few.Credits:David Michael - @myoldmansaid | Chris Budd - @BUDD_music / Phillip Shaw - @prsgameThis Podcast has been created and uploaded by My Old Man Said. One is bottom and just lost to a team that hasn't won in four months, the other was just beaten 5-0 at home. On Clash of the Correspondents James is joined by Wolves fan Bradley Parker and Sunderland fan Spencer Barrowman to discuss the mood at their clubs ahead of Saturday's meeting at Molineux. Wolves relegation has been inevitable but a late winter/early Spring upturn in form and results has been followed by three consecutive defeats without scoring against teams placed 15th, 17th and 18th in the table. What's happened to the positivity prior to the International break? The team in 16th just trounced Sunderland at The Stadium of Light 5-0, which followed on from conceding four at Villa Park, when they also were on a positive run previously. There's discussion one hat remains and early thoughts on next season, including whether the managers will still be there.
