Is KTM okay or not? A year of scary news about financials for the massive Austrian maker of KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas motorcycles continues, with rumors of a make it or break it payment looming this week. It appears KTM's business partner Bajaj might have gotten the loan needed to restart the KTM assembly lines and keep the company going.  Jason Weigandt gives the latest on that, then chats with Frank White of long-time American dirt bike manufacturer ATK. Yes, the ATK brand is still around, now as a parts supplier, and it has partnered with Harley-Davidson on projects before.  Frank White doesn't like what he sees over at H-D these days, with the company reporting a loss of over $200 million in the final quarter of 2024. White and others would like to see the CEO of Harley ousted, and a revamp of the type of products the company produces.  While a recent vote will keep the current CEO in place for at least this year, these are still times of stress at two of the biggest motorcycle companies in the world. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura, Insta360 Cameras and OnTrack School.

Jason Weigandt talks to the privateer racer who planned to become a doctor and instead started one of the most popular YouTube channels in the sport. Within seconds of Jason Weigandt's conversation with Jeff Walker, you'll realize Jeff is a really smart guy. His dad is an ER doctor, and Jeff planned to take that same route, getting his bachelor's degree and heading to med school...except he also realized he was young and still had time to live out a little bit of his dirt bike dream in his twenties. He started a YouTube channel just so his dad could watch him practice, but it grew into something with nearly 300,000 subscribers. Jeff will be back to the races this year when Pro Motocross begins next month. Weigandt asks how he got here and what will come next (is he ever going back to med school?) and also dives into the new Insta360 X5 camera, which Walker uses for his work. The Racer X Exhaust podcast welcomes Insta360 on as a new sponsor—they made the Walker interview happen. Yoshimura and OnTrack are still on board also.

Since the second quarter of 2024, the industry has been filled with rumors of Pierer Mobility, the parent company of the KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas brands, running into slowing sales, an overstock of product and ultimately major financial troubles. The strong boost in powersports, bicycle, and overall outdoor recreation sales seen after the pandemic have slowed, and aggressive sales targets have suddenly become difficult to meet. While none of those dealings behind the scenes had yet impacted what the consumer sees with products—the brands continue to innovate with quite a few new machines for 2025—or on the race track, it's becoming more and more clear the company will need major changes to continue into the future.   Jason Weigandt explains the "never waste a good crisis" mode the company was in after the pandemic, the boom that followed, and the struggle today that led the company to declare itself insolvent in Europe. It won't impact racing or motorcycle availability here in America, yet, at least beyond the cuts that were already put into motion over the last few weeks and months. But these are tough roads ahead. Is it a sign of bigger trouble in the industry, or is this just a KTM-specific issue?   The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

"All of your guys were around when four-strokes came out," said the AMA's Mike Burkeen in Thursday night's AMA Arenacross press conference. "The rules were made and it turns out they weren't very good. They basically killed off the two-strokes. Once it happened we couldn't put the genie back in the bottle. With the electric bikes we didn't want to go full-bore and then just cut it off if we find out it doesn't work. Because everyone has made purchasing decisions already, then we'll have all these guys that they bought under what they would say were bad pretenses. So we want to walk before we run, but we definitely want to run. What that looks like? Nobody knows?" Team Manager Ryan Holliday, though, can only chalk that up to good racing luck, because things haven't rolled the team's way like this in a long time. The team isn't alone in trying to change up the way it develops and evaluates riders, though, as Adams raced a bunch this year including competing in Canada to try to get in more gate drops. Holliday would like his riders to race more so they can learn more. This weekend's Scouting Moto Combine is a part of that. Jason Weigandt checks in to hear how the amateur game is changing.   The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and On Track School, plus Racer X Brand.

Exhaust #259: Ducati GM Paolo Ciabatti

Ducati's announcement that it was entering the off-road space was big enough news, but moving Paolo Ciabatti, who headed up the fantastically successful MotoGP effort, over to head the new motocross program was just as important to insiders. This is proof of how serious Ducati is about success on the dirt, and the brand takes a big step this weekend when Antonio Cairoli (!) returns to MXGP on the Ducati 450.   Ciabatti was busy in another series last weekend, though, as he stopped by Unadilla to take in Pro Motocross. Jason Weigandt and Jason Thomas were able to get a few minutes with him for the Big Interview on the SMX Insider show. This podcast is an extended, full-length version of the shorter interview that ran in the show.    The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura, On Track School, and Racer X Brand.

On the Friday before the Spring Creek National in Millville, Minnesota, Jason Weigandt talked to Chance Hymas over at the Honda HRC truck to find out more about his path to the pros. Hymas didn't win all the time when he was younger, but once he got on big bikes he started to roll, and eventually Honda came calling. It wasn't perfect, though, as a rough patch during the 2022 Scouting Moto Combine and the 2022 Monster Energy AMA Amateur National at Loretta Lynn's certainly didn't feel good. But Chance is used to working his way up, and he's done it again as a pro after capturing his first career moto and overall victories this summer. How far can he go now?   By the way, we recorded this interview before the Hymas/Haiden Deegan incident in turn one of the Spring Creek National the very next day. Hymas hurt his ankle but hopes to be back for Washougal this weekend.   The Racer X Exhaust podcast is hosted by Jason Weigandt and presented by Yoshimura, On Track School and and Racer X Brand.

Nate Ramsey, one of the all-time winningest 125/250F supercross racers, has carved out a great post-racing career, now as team manager of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna. Jason Weigandt rang up Nate Dogg to get the inside story on RJ Hamsphire's 250SX West Region title, and how stressful the day felt at Salt Lake City, as well as Hampshire's race strategy. Did you know finishing second in the heat race was actually an advantage? They also talk about old bikes, and how the 2022 new-generation platform that Hampshire vocally criticized has now morphed into a great race bike. Could Zach Osborne's 2017-2018 250F Championship bikes compete? What about Nate's old (legendary) Honda CRF450R? Yeah, bikes have come a long way. Weigandt chats with Ramsey about it all. Mike Webb tells more behind-the-scenes stories from working with Ryan Dungey and James Stewart with Team Suzuki. Plus, how it all shut down. Mike Webb lived the dream life, moving to the top of the racing food chain, as Suzuki team manager for the off-road squad and then transitioning into the top of the motocross and supercross team. From tons of GNCC championships to working with Ryan Dungey and James Stewart, Mike saw it all. However, it's not always as glorious as it seems, as Mike's time in the supercross paddock came after Roger De Coster and Ian Harrison left for KTM, and Suzuki's support budget was starting to wane. Mike inherited Ryan Dungey and the 450SX and 450MX titles, but Dungey wanted to leave with Roger, immediately. His Suzuki contract forced him to stay. Then Mike and company faced hard luck trying to defend the titles with Dungey, which left a mark. Mike eventually rebuilt with none other than James Stewart. Years later, Suzuki would shut Mike's factory program down, not once, but twice. There are some deep, deep stories from behind the scenes in this interview you won't want to miss. This is part 2 of our two-part podcast with Webb. The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

There was so much anticipation for Adam Cianciarulo's pro career when it began a little over a decade ago, and now we can look back at it in full because he's announced his retirement. Jason Weigandt has a few thoughts from Adam to share (via the SMX Insider show's exclusive interview) and then Weigandt adds his own thoughts. Hardly anyone had expectations to live up to like Adam did, because he was entering the ranks right on the heels of a 15-year run of Kawasaki Team Green prospects going straight to the top immediately, through Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, and Ryan Villopoto. Thus, the microscope was on Adam right from the start to see if he could be the next one, and for a brief moment, he delivered by winning supercross races immediately. Unfortunately, injuries then kicked in, leaving everyone wondering what might have been. Adam surely wondered this more than anyone, but was also able to gain perspective from it all. He might not have won all the races he would have won if he was healthy, but he might have emerged from the process as a better person. That's why his legacy is now not as one of the winningest riders ever, but one of the most liked.    The Racer X Exhaust podcast is presented by Yoshimura and Racer X Brand.

Should dirt bikes get faster or slower? Better might not be better. Carson Brown has top-five supercross speed but prefers to rip on old bikes, minis, two-strokes and more. He knows slower and simpler is definitely more fun, and ultimately, probably better. Even if it's worse! While today's bikes posses an amazing blend of power and traction and undoubtably better than old stuff from an engineering standpoint, that capability means more speed, bigger jumps and more cost. Brown has legit speed, and was a top-five threat in 250SX West Region as recently as as 2022. But his real specialty is pit bikes, two-strokes and more, as evidenced by his unbelievable Instagram account where he rips modern-sized obstacles with modern style on bikes that were never intended for such. It's unreal to watch! As part of the famous BBR (Brown Brothers Racing) family that has become iconic in pit bike performance, Carson has ridden more bikes than most. He's having a really good time. What has he learned about mins, two-strokes and more? He's learned that they can be more fun than the big, new stuff. What's more, racing them could be better, too. Is this a message we should be hearing? Jason Weigandt chats with Carson in the latest edition of the Racer X Exhaust Podcast. This is Randy's 28th season running the Am-Pro Yamaha off-road squad, which is Yamaha's factory program in the Progressive Grand National Cross Country Series and basically anywhere Yamaha races in the woods. Randy has seen the ups and downs for factory off-road racing, from "getting fired" by Team Suzuki as a racer, to setting up a fledgling Yamaha program in the early days, to developing four-strokes for off-road, and riding out the economic storm of the Great Recession. These days off-road is back in a huge way, from bike sales, to race entries, to factory budgets, and even the types of machines the manufacturers are now producing. Randy, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, had a chat with Jason Weigandt to explain how things started, and how it's going. Former WMX Racer Sara Price fought, battled, and clawed her way to a driving career, and nearly won Dakar in her first attempt. She was once a WMX racer with support from Kawasaki Team Green, but when her moto career, and the factory support for WMX racing, went away, she had to find a new way to stay competitive. She set her sights on off-road racing in trucks, but the process of succeeding on four wheels is far different from motocross. Sara joins Jason Weigandt to explain truck and car racing, which is based heavily on burning up the phones and emails to try to get financial support. It's a lot of hearing no, all in hopes of one big yes that can get you into a seat. After great success in Baja racing, Sara's goal has always been to tackle the famous Dakar Rally, which she finally got to do this year. And she battled for her win in her first attempt! Further, her boyfriend Ricky Brabec won the race in the motorcycle division. Sara's also an accomplished stunt driver and rider, and even appeared in a Toyota Super Bowl commercial on Sunday.
