Since this is episode 404, we're talking all about the money lessons that we can learn from our city Atlanta (which is sometimes referred to as the 404). You can learn lessons in unintended places- there are things to be learned all around us, if only we're keeping an eye out for them. For instance, one of the impacts of the Covid lockdowns last year was that we couldn't go anywhere and our calendars were pretty much wiped clean. And the unintended lesson that many Americans learned was that we probably had way too many events on the calendar to begin with. We quickly learned that less activities and more family time was a good thing. And so when it comes to Atlanta, there are a ton of different personal finance lessons that we can learn- from specific things like terrible traffic, the cultural diversity we find in the city, tax breaks being offered to the film industry, our sports teams, and plenty more! So be sure to listen in order to learn some valuable ATLien money lessons. During this episode we enjoyed BBA Siberius Maximus 10th Anniversary Cuvee RIS by Wrecking Bar Brewpub! Is everything in life negotiable? It depends on who you ask. We all enjoy paying less than we have to and getting a deal, but there are certain instances where it makes more sense than others. Just because you can negotiate a bill to get a few bucks off doesn’t mean it’s a good use of your time, when there might be a different bill that you should focus on instead. There are several areas in our personal finances that we often overlook to the detriment of our bank accounts. And then one of the other problems is knowing how to go about the process of negotiating- what strategies to use and what steps to take in order to make the biggest impact. And so we’re going to address, not only how to negotiate, but also who to negotiate with, in order to make it worth our time. During this episode we enjoyed a Tampa Timeshare Grapefruit-Basil Gose by Wrecking Bar Brewpub- one of our favorite local breweries. Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia and the 5th Anniversary of the Jeff Galloway Half Marathon Weekend! It's our post-race brunch celebration... continued! EAT This week, it's my cameraman's take on The Wrecking Bar Brewpub brunch. He had the Pastrami Hash with perfectly cooked pastrami, peppers, onions, potatoes and egg. My mouth is watering even thinking about it! DRINK Did we mention that The Wrecking Bar Brewpub also has tasty brunch cocktails? The spicy Bloody Mary is a delicious cocktail including Tito's Vodka that the bartenders have spiced up in their own way at the Wrecking Bar to make an awesome and dangerous brunch cocktail. THAT'S A WRAP Thank you for watching! Here's hoping for a great second year of the podcast because of all your support! Please subscribe and rate us on iTunes. Welcome to Atlanta, Georgia and the 5th Anniversary of the Jeff Galloway Half Marathon Weekend! It is half marathon time! RUN This episode features the Jeff Galloway Half Marathon on Sunday of race weekend. In this race, it was chilly, wet, and sometimes raining, but we got to see some of the best sites of Atlanta. The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the Atlanta Beltline, the hilly and beautiful Virginia Highlands, and the big finish in Piedmont Park. Jeff was waiting for after the finish for a photo and the medal was unbelievable! It was the biggest I have ever seen. What a great comeback after the injury last year! It is a friendly, no-pressure way to introduce yourself to this distance with so much support. It is a must-do for any run-walk-runner. EAT We featured small bites and a great mixed drink from The Wrecking Bar Brewpub last year, and since this was a comeback, we had to come back here to feature their awesome brunch. Country Fried Steak was on the menu and it was perfect. The gravy included the made in-house cheddarwurst we originally tasted in the corn pups last year. Perfectly cooked steak with a crispy breading was at the heart of this dish topped with a runny egg like my daddy used to make for me as a kid. So tasty! We had a couple of other items from their menu, so stay tuned for other tasty brunch treats from this awesome Atlanta find. DRINK Did we mention that The Wrecking Bar Brewpub also has a brewery right on site and we tried two of their tasty original beers? Maltlanta Doppel Sticke and Choco Mountain Imperial Breakfast Stout were our choices. They are both high ABV but delicious. Maltlanta had caramel and biscuit notes and Choco Mountain had strong coffee flavors as it had barrel-aged coffee beans used in the brewing process. We have more to show you from their beer menu as well as cocktails on future quick bites! THAT'S A WRAP Thank you for watching! Here's hoping for a great second year of the podcast because of all your support! Please subscribe and rate us on iTunes. New people, new beers, and an old name for Atlanta Brewing Company Opened in 1993, Atlanta Brewing Company is the oldest production brewery in Georgia. They started with that name but changed to Red Brick Brewing Co. in 2010, named after their most popular beer. It’s surprising that our oldest brewery is only 25, but with that little Prohibition thing in America and Georgia’s historically awful brewery laws, that’s quite a feat. Others have come and gone, some moved on to open other breweries, but Atlanta Brewing Co. has stood strong, even when they shouldn’t have. Director of Brewing Operations Gavin McKenna joined Atlanta Brewing Co. in June 2017 after four years at the popular Wrecking Bar Brewpub. Although there’s renewed popularity of the beer since McKenna came on board, he’s quick to admit there were many others that helped build the brewery well before he stepped foot inside. A visit to the taproom offers up 20 varied and unique beers from popular hazy IPAs to classic English ales and even a “Lagerwine.” When McKenna joined the team he offered suggestions to improve beer quality and was met with some resistance. Many people on the team had been there for years, and he was the new guy. Over time his suggestions worked, the beer improved, and the craft beer community began to take notice. To celebrate their 25th-anniversary Marketing Director Cameron Davis shares the details of their month-long celebration all around Atlanta, culminating with the official anniversary party at the brewery on September 29th. The team collaborated with several breweries for the festivities and will release these collaborations in the taproom and at collaborating breweries throughout the month. Imperial Stout Hype Whale will also see three new variant releases at their Hangover Party on the 30th. McKenna and Davis sat down with us this week to talk about the rebrand and the anniversary events. We sampled their newly-packaged Homestand Pilsner while planning out our month for maximum enjoyment. The impetus for the change was a desire to move forward while reconnecting with their Atlanta roots. There are big changes to the beer but with the same branding many people have their opinions set and may pass over new offerings. With the change to Atlanta Brewing Company, the team hopes the retro-modern packaging will help beer drinkers take notice once again. When Travis Fritts and Nate Rykse started Old Nation Brewing Co. they brought 14+ years of brewing education and experience with them. They'd dedicated their lives to learning the technical aspects of brewing as well as the differences in brewing methods and ingredients across different cultures. The result is a brewery that blends these different methods and ingredients to produce unique beers. Initially, the beer they offered was "very traditional and technically accurate." Director of Growth & Strategy Mark Logusz recounts, "The beer was great, but it was not what anybody wanted to drink." With that realization, Fritts engaged the members of a local beer group to talk about new styles and after some discussion invited a few out to help with a pilot batch. The result was the first batch of M-43. Logusz sat down with us recently during M-43's Atlanta market launch. We chat about "testing the waters" in Atlanta at the Day of the Juice festival, trying to keep up with the demand for hazy IPAs, the difference in pasties and pasties, Old Nation's non-hazy offerings, and the International Festival of Lagers. On our quest to visit every brewery in Georgia in 2018 we visited Abide Brewing in Newnan and caught Line Creek Brewing Company's opening day. We also joined Wrecking Bar Brewpub to celebrate their 7th anniversary, and took a trip to SweetWater to sample their new 420 Strain G13 IPA, brewed with cannabis terpenes and hemp flavor. In the news this week Chinese-made brewing equipment gets exempted from tariffs, American aluminum price hikes raise some questions, a Swedish brewery prints tweets on beer foam, World Cup fans cause a beer shortage in Moscow, and London's Beavertown Brewery sells a minority stake to Heineken. Next week we're talking Beer and BBQ with The Beer Sommelier Matt Simpson and Smyrna Beer Market owner Brandon King. Just in time for your 4th of July planning. It's no secret that Atlanta is a great food town. But it's also becoming a fantastic beer town as well. So if you're a brewpub, you have to keep up with both. Wrecking Bar Brewpub has been able to do that. From crafting amazing beers (that are now being canned, thanks to new law changes) to providing fine fare, the Atlanta brewpub has managed to thrive in this busy and competitive market. We talk to owner and brewer emeritus Bob Sandage about his brewpub, new Georgia laws, and whether or not milkshake IPAs are really a beer. He and his wife Barbara are such genuine and supportive people who are passionate about running. Their beautiful half marathon and 5K courses support great causes like the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and the Piedmont Dog Park as well as the Donna Foundation and Team 413. The half marathon course takes you through some of the best sights you can see in Atlanta. This year, the race was a challenge for me because I rolled my ankle before mile 1 and had to fight to finish. Next year, I will come back stronger and more careful than ever to highlight that beautiful course. It was a race that tested endurance, mental toughness, and dedication. The people on the course, especially the 4:30 pacers and that great group of ladies who finished just ahead of us and stayed to cheer us on, as well as Jeff at the finish, were wonderful to us and we can't thank them enough! Next year will be great! EAT The Wrecking Bar Brewpub is located in a renovated and historic space in Atlanta. The food we had - the corn pups - were incredible! Wrecking Bar cheddarwurst, cornbread battered and fried, then served with curry ketchup & yellow mustard. Melt in your mouth tender meat and the sweetness of the cornbread along with the tart and tang of the dipping sauces... just incredible. DRINK The Wrecking Bar Brewpub has homemade ginger beer, lime, and bourbon in their Kentucky mule. It was perfect for bourbon lovers or anyone who likes a Moscow mule but is looking for a twist. Their drink menu is eclectic and beer selection is vast and has something for everyone, too. THAT'S A WRAP! Thanks for watching! Please subscribe and rate us in iTunes. It takes some courage to open up a craft brewery focusing mainly on lagers. After all, lagers require a little more love...time...and temperature control before they're ready to serve. And for the most part, craft beer drinkers are mainly an ale-centric bunch. But for the men behind Hapeville's Arches Brewing, craft lagers are a way to showcase their brewing skills. Ryan Fogelgren and Jamey Adams joined us in the studios this week. Specializing in crisp, clean-drinking (mainly) German-style beers, the crew behind Arches have gained a good following in the community, and have even gained fans at the nearby Porsche headquarters. We talked about their start in the brewing business, their growth, and the future.
