Mikel B. Classen and Jon C. Stott, award-winning authors of travel books, provide expert guidance for beer aficionados and tourists to visit the 29 unique craft breweries and brewpubs of Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Yooper Ale Trails. The tours to breweries are organized geographically from the east UP to the west side into eight picturesque ale trails. Each brewery or brewpub has its own story. Classen and Stott have captured the essence of the beer scene in the UP since the mid-1990s. Classen suggests planning six months for an ale trail trip. "The book itself is a little bit of a roadbook too, you get a good breakdown of beers we found there," Classen said. Listen to the episode to win a signed hardcover copy of Yooper Ale Trails. In this episode of the Explore Oregon Podcast, host Zach Urness talks with guidebook author Matt Wastradowski about their favorite places for a combination outdoor adventure and meal or drink. They travel to every corner of the state, talking about some of the state's best brewpubs, cowboy diners and seafood stops that also happen to be near big mountains, wild rivers and excellent hikes.
That's right: I said Colorado rye whiskey! One of the most exciting developments in American whiskey making was the recent rediscovery of a forgotten part of our past: the three chamber still. It's completely unlike any other type of still, and it was used by most American rye distillers as recently as 110 years ago. Then it disappeared. But it's back, and I got an interview with the man who revived it, Todd Leopold. I also got a sample of the brand-new 6 year old three chamber rye from Leopold Bros. distillery, and sampled it live with two Penns Valley regulars, Dave Dreese and Rich Gallup. What else? Brewpubs, cocktails, whisky, and great eats on our drive to Denver; reports from the Yorkholo Brewing Carnival of Stouts, and the Hartslog Heritage Festival, and some really big news... The next episode drops in a week! We're doing our first bonus episode, and you'll get the second half of the Todd Leopold interview (with a lot of talk about Maryland rye whiskey, and what Todd's doing next), Kansas City barbecue, some shoreside fun from Cape Charles, VA, and then... Another episode the following week! Get ready for a big Thanksgiving episode, with turkey, pies, drinks, and visits from everyone I interviewed over the past year. It's going to be great! You're used to hearing about beer, but in this conversation, we're pairing that topic with food. Brewpubs and beer-focused bars and restaurants across the country all have their particular takes on menus that incorporate the two. What you'll hear momentarily shares philosophy and strategy around what people can expect from California's Fort Point Beer Company, which features full-time culinary director Cecile Macasero. Cecile has worked at prestigious restaurants recognized with James Beard awards and Michelin stars. He's organized menus for staff at Google. And as you'll hear, the things he's learned elsewhere have helped him conceptualize what food can provide to beer lovers when they visit Fort Point and what it means to create dishes that try to capture the spirit of San Francisco. Along with Cecile, we're joined by Dina Dobkin, co-owner and chief brand officer at Fort Point, who sheds additional light on the ideas and processes to create a special on-premise experience for people who visit the brewery to drink and eat. Together, Cecile and Dina explain why it's important to have a component of food at a taproom, how their family histories from outside the United States have shaped their own appreciation for food, and how beer and food can find a fun middle ground between what's interesting and what's easy to love.

In this episode, we’re talking about the pub. It’s a place with a lot of cultural and social importance, but it’s different from a bar, café or restaurant in Australia.

Big Bird joins me and we discuss our recent goings on in the world of craft beer. In news segment we take a deep dive into the chaos that took place at the Platform Brewing Company's tap room in Columbus, Ohio this past weekend. We speculate on what the fall out will be after the dust has settled and give our opinions on the whole situation. During the interview segment I sit down with the John Bikis and Dave Sutula from Royal Docks Brewing Company. We discuss everything from Dave's extensive brewing history and John's travels of the UK which inspired his love for British Pubs, and his desire to bring one to Canton. Make sure to follow Royal Docks Brewing Company on Facebook and Instagram at @royaldocksbrewing as well as visiting them on the web at http://www.docks.beer Make sure you check out our Pint Club which gives you the opportunity to win free Ohio craft beer shipped out by http://rivalrybrews.com. In this engaging conversation we discuss what it means to be a small brewpub in Chicago in the midst of a changing landscape impacted by COVID 19, the cultural synergy between music and beer, and the business model of having multiple on/own-premise locations in one city. One of the stories that I think often gets lost in 2019 craft beer is the experience of the brewpub brewer. All the noise—for better and worse—tends to come from packaging breweries, can releases, distribution, growth and expansion into new markets, and massive international invitationals. Most of that is not relevant to a brewpub brewer who’s focused on things like their local market, foot traffic, keeping serving tanks turning over, and serving restaurant guests a great beer. Brewpubs are, in many ways, the backbone of the modern craft renaissance both in the ‘90s as well as the early oughts. So many people cut their teeth on brewpub systems. It’s where so many have their first craft beers. It’s the gateway for so much of the growth the craft sector has seen over the years. It’s also much more resilient to the ups and downs of that sector. Instead, its vulnerability comes from real estate prices and shifting demographics in their immediate radius—and the staff turnover that frequently plagues restaurants. Brewpubs are another world. And for today’s guest, that’s kind of the point. Joel Kodner is the brewer at West Palm Brewery in West Palm Beach, Florida. It’s been a good shift for him away from the package-distribution-production-brewery part of the industry. He likes where it fits into his life, and the life it enables. But it’s also a weird seat to have at the craft beer shit show of 2019. It can feel isolating and a bit irrelevant to the larger conversation sometimes. That tension has made Joel a prolific presence on Twitter and Instagram—where he shares a lot of his criticism, frustration, and hope for the industry. Sometimes with a sense of humor, sometimes with a sense of dread. But for me personally, it always feels entirely rational. He brings to light so many of the issues that haunt me and others in craft beer, and the way in which he articulates it all usually sums up those feelings in stark terms.

Sasquatch lives at 903 Brewers 903 Brewers founder and head brewer Jeremy Roberts is happy to sit down and chat with visitors about the legendary Sasquatch. He's never seen the beast in the wild, but he's keeping an eye out. 903's big milk stout is named after the ape, Sasquatch's base is a sneaky 10% and some of the Reserve variants (like the Double Chocolate Cherry Stout we sampled) hit at a heavy 15% ABV. The box encourages you to "Age it. Drink it. Trade it. Share it." We skipped step one and didn't make it past step two. Roberts admits they haven't quite nailed an IPA that's caught on, but they aren't worried about riding that hype train. They're happy to brew their stouts, a huge variety of cream ales, and many other styles. Their Down with PastryArchy series takes those cream ales and adds crazy additions like strawberry cake and cinnamon rolls. Some fruity versions even get served from a slushie machine to help beat the Texas heat. The brewery is celebrating their 6th anniversary this May and they are in the process of expanding to a new building, an old 3-story schoolhouse in downtown Sherman. The new space will offer a larger tasting room, large ballroom and meeting area, and expanded brewing capacity. We also talk about the restrictive direct sales laws in Texas. Brewpubs, distilleries, and wineries are allowed to sell beer to go, but production brewers aren't. 903 switched to a brewpub model because of the limitations the laws put on his growth. Fortunately, Texas HB762 is up this year looking to change that. If you find yourself in Sherman, TX make sure to stop by 903 Brewers. You're guaranteed to see Sasquatch.
