And I wanted to honor him the best way I know how: by letting you hear his voice, his encouragement, and the simple method that helped millions of people get moving.   Jeff had a gift for making running feel possible, not intimidating. He used to say, “If you can walk, you can run.” That message didn't just inspire me—it changed my life. Jeff's Run/Walk/Run approach helped me train for my very first marathon… and since then I've run 17, with #18 on the horizon.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE  • Exactly how the Run/Walk/Run method works (and why it's so effective for beginners)  • How walk breaks can help you go farther, feel better, and lower injury risk  • Smart recovery basics—why rest is part of the plan, not a failure  • Simple strategies to stay motivated (even if your “goal” is just getting out the door)  • Jeff's practical tips if running feels tough on your knees—including options for runners with arthritis   CONNECT  • Have a question or topic idea for the show? A weekend of sparkle, sneakers, and shared heart. Princess Half Marathon Weekend brought out everything we love about runDisney—creative costumes, cool-weather miles, and castle magic—but also the kind of community you can feel in your bones. We navigated an expo frenzy as Brooks' princess-themed shoes sent lines snaking across the building, watched Disney pivot fast to keep characters and bands on course during a misty 10K, and soaked in small moments that turned into big memories: a family's first 5K together, a triumphant TinkerBob, and the scent of BoardWalk bacon drifting through a fast, happy morning. The half marathon became a quiet masterpiece. Overcast skies, steady breezes, and a surprise wave from Cinderella, the Prince, and Fairy Godmother lifted runners through those famous Magic Kingdom miles. Near the finish, a semicircle of fairy godmothers dusted us with wishes, and the course felt less like a race and more like a rite of passage. Some of us set PRs. Others walked every step on purpose. All of us leaned on run-walk-run, hydration, and patience—the essentials Jeff Galloway taught us so many times. And then the finish line gave us a moment we'll never forget. A chair where Jeff once stood filled with Mickey gloves, ribbons, and a lone Gymboss. Pacers gathered with flags, cheering wave after wave just as Jeff would, offering thumbs-ups and “you did it” to faces still catching their breath. When the sun finally broke through, it felt like a blessing on a weekend that was both hard and healing. We also check in on races from Tel Aviv to Seattle and Atlanta, sharing wins, decade PRs, and lessons that carry beyond the parks. If you ran, cheered, or simply needed a reminder that miles can mend, this one's for you. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs a nudge, and tell us: What's your favorite Princess Weekend moment—or your best Galloway memory? Barb Galloway: RIP Jeff Galloway

Jeff Galloway, who died recently may have been the world's most influential and beloved running ambassador. In this podcast, we speak primarily with his wife, Barbara, and also with his son, Westin, and his co-coach, Chris Twiggs.Galloway was an Olympian in his competitive days, and also winner of the first Atlanta Marathon (1963) and the first Peachtree Road Race (1970).In those early days, no one could have imagined that running would be a massive participant sport on a global scale. Galloway did as much or more than anyone else to make the present-day miracle happen.   In literally thousands of clinic and talks, he spread a simple message: Yes, you can. You can run more than you have believed, and you will become a mentally and physically healthier person as you do.Importantly, Galloway had a training plan to accompany his words. This was the now-famous Run-Walk-Run approach, also called "Jeffing" by many. While some runners initially scoffed at the idea of walking during a workout or marathon race, others followed his inspiration and his instruction. And they succeeded. And they told friends that the program worked. Before long, a small trickle of run-walk-run fans became millions, and the fitness world at large was forced to acknowledge Galloway's genius, method, and impact. His passing was met with an outpouring of love and thank-you messages, particularly on this Facebook page. Major media around the world also noted Jeff's life and accomplishments. We were so sad to hear about the passing of America's Coach Jeff Galloway this past Wednesday at the age of 80. Jeff was so important to our own running journeys, as his Run-Walk-Run method has gotten us out on the streets and trails and over finish lines again and again. We will miss Jeff so much, and he will always be in our hearts as we continue to run (walk-run) into and beyond our middle age. To honor him we decided to rerelease our interview with Jeff from July 2022. Topics range from pro-walking to winning marathons to exercise psychology to the history of running for fitness in America. And in our closing segment “Jeff Galloway, Block Deflector,” we lob excuses at the master and he batts them away without breaking a sweat. It is truly a thing to behold. We love you Jeff! Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  It is with sorrow that I pay tribute to Jeff Galloway with a replay of a 2020 episode that we did together.  Jeff passed away this week from complication of a hemorrhagic stroke.   Some people may say that running didn't prolong Jeff Galloway's life or even that running may have made him die earlier.  I would say that Jeff had a wonderful lifespan lifting others up both spiritually and health-wise through his lessons on the run-walk method of distance running.  A life well lived and shared.  I believe the longevity and medical community get caught up  more  with time than meaning or quality.  We will all be better if we can lift others up and be a blessing to others for the time we have on this earth.  Rest in peace my fellow runner.  Thank you for listening.   Website: doctordulaney.com Email with questions at jami@doctordulaney.com Cookbook: amzn.to/4onHVe4 Water Distillers: mypurewater.come?sld-jdulaney  discount code: cleanwaterforsophie

In this episode we explain the difference between "in-place" drill conditioning and running practice, why doing too much outside too soon can undermine progress, and how to treat running like an interval-style practice — work, reset, drill, then continue. You'll get practical steps for stopping and resetting mid-run, why small intentional pauses improve form and endurance, how walk-breaks differ from resets, and real member examples that show steady progress. We open by honoring Jeff Galloway—the Olympian and Run-Walk-Run mentor whose you can do it turned marathons into memories for everyday runners—then spend most of this short episode saluting another architect of joy: Roger Tofte, the craftsman behind Oregon's Enchanted Forest.Roger was a draftsman, sign maker, and watch repairer who saw a quiet forest near Salem and imagined a fairy tale carved into concrete and trees. He bought twenty acres on a shoestring, spent seven years shaping Storybook Lane by hand, and opened with a butcher-paper sign.We celebrate Roger's life at ninety-six and the ongoing stewardship of his family, who still run the park with the same hands-on care. If you're mapping an Oregon road trip, looking for family-friendly attractions near Salem, or chasing the charm of indie amusement parks, this story is your guide to what handmade wonder looks like—and why it endures. The news hit like a thunderclap: Jeff Galloway, the voice behind run-walk-run and a steady light at so many runDisney start lines, has passed away. We pause to honor the coach who made marathons feel possible, share early thoughts through the shock, and invite everyone at Princess Weekend to carry his legacy in the miles ahead. From there, we shift into a packed, upbeat show that keeps community at the center. We break down the new Marathon Weekend artwork and what Donald's 30th half marathon anniversary might mean for medal design and race-day energy. Then we revisit Springtime Surprise medals—initially “simple,” until we spot the glitter and fluid movement that will pop in person. On the expo front, we debate the Brooks Princess releases: Rapunzel braids on laces, bold character palettes, why specific IP sells better than weekend branding, and where a Merida colorway could still shine. It's practical talk for anyone timing their expo line or eyeing limited drops. Our spotlight guest, Kristen of Running in Makeup, returns with real-world wisdom. After an injury and a purposeful pause from filming, she details how stepping back sharpened training, improved form, and delivered a 30-minute marathon PR. We trade chaotic race-morning tales (forgotten insoles!), celebrate inventive costumes (a Joffrey's coffee cup for the win), and lean into her post-long-run Dr Pepper ritual rooted in Baylor and Waco lore. The heart of it: how runners balance creativity, goals, and recovery without losing joy.We close with a sweeping Princess roll call and a coast-to-coast race report: Vegas lights and PRs, a gritty urban ultra in Ocala navigating painted horse statues, and the beloved Gasparilla challenges with donuts, sprinklers, and rainy-day grit. Whether you're chasing a first 5K or stacking a multi-race weekend, you'll find tips, laughs, and a reminder of why we show up for one another—especially now.If this moved you, subscribe, share with a running friend, and leave a review. Jeff Galloway passed away on February 25, 2026 at age 80. He was a 1972 U.S. Olympian and the creator of the Run Walk Run method, the simple idea that made running feel possible for millions of people, from first time 5K runners to marathoners and ultrarunners. This episode starts with a short monologue about what Jeff's legacy means, and why inspiration is not always about being the fastest. Sometimes it is about making the sport accessible, lowering the fear, and giving people a repeatable way to show up. I also share a line that has stuck with me, “fill your dash,” the idea that everything we do lives in that small space between the year we are born and the year we die. Before the replay, I read a piece Jeff sent me, “A Philosophy of Running,” where he writes about meaning, community, and why endurance can change a life. Then I roll straight into our full conversation from Month of Jeff. We talk about the post-goal low after the Olympics, building a life around helping others run, the origins of Run Walk Run, and how Jeff kept refining his method through decades of coaching and data.Rest in peace, Mr. Galloway. Thanks for teaching the world that running can belong to everyone.Support our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure

Joe Emus joins us to share how finishing dead last at the Toronto Zoo race sparked a lifetime of running—seven Bostons, five World Marathon Majors, and more than a thousand races fueled by community and curiosity. His secret isn't a shoe or a split; it's choosing joy over judgment and people over pace.We dig into the moments that make miles unforgettable: the phalanx of runners shielding each other from Arctic wind in Tromsø, a vineyard detour in Bordeaux that turned into a mad dash to beat the cutoff, and the blizzard day in Ottawa where Joe was both first and last in his age group. Joe's stories remind us that the best finish photos don't star a watch face; they star strangers who become teammates, a sunrise on the water, and a city chanting your name at midnight.Along the way, Joe unpacks the habits that keep him moving at 71: adopting Jeff Galloway's run walk method for durability, resetting PRs to zero every year to honor the season you're in, and learning fueling by doing—from early gels without water to his notorious frozen-bottle cone stashes. We talk aging with grace, choosing races for joy rather than medals, and why your shoes should change as your body changes. And yes, there are dad jokes, kilts, Tiffany bling, and the origin of “Cool Runnings, mon.”If you've ever needed permission to look up from your GPS, talk to the person next to you, and let the day be the reward, this conversation is your sign. A fractured kneecap, a missed flight to Honolulu, and a coaching mindset stronger than ever—Jeff Galloway joins us with candid lessons on healing, pacing, and performing when it counts. We kick off the new year one week from Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, and Jeff brings the practical wisdom runners need: how to decide when it's safe to return from injury, why walking long sessions preserves endurance, and how run-walk-run keeps you moving without adding stress. We get specific about race-week decisions that make or break your day—starting slower than you think you should, choosing a conservative pace group for built-in support, and fueling in simple, steady doses to avoid GI surprises. Jeff shares a clear rule of thumb: two to four ounces of water and 30 to 40 calories of sugar every two miles, with a smart pre-start snack inside 30 minutes to prevent an energy dip. We also talk character stops, run-by selfies, and the moment to pull back if swelling, pain, or loss of function shows up midrace.Beyond the logistics, we celebrate what makes Run Disney different: kindness, camaraderie, and the friendships forged at 3 a.m. in a parking lot and on quiet miles after Hollywood Studios. Jeff reframes success to include six-minute miles and sixteen-minute miles, reminding us that progress is personal and community-powered. He previews 2026 plans—from Greece with Dean Karnazes to a Munich race weekend—and shares how mantras and community help quiet the monkey brain during recovery. If you're tapering, coming back from a setback, or toeing your first Marathon Weekend start line, this conversation is your calm, clear plan. Running--State of the Sport

Early in his career, Jeff Galloway won the first marathon he entered in 1963, won the first Peachtree Classic 10K on July 4, 1970, made the 1972 U.S. Olympic team at 10,000 meters, and ran the Houston Marathon in 2:16+.Later in his life, Galloway made much bigger contributions. For the last 40 years he has focused his attention on teaching beginning and intermediate (and injured) runners how they can use his Run-Walk-Run method to get fit, avoid injuries, and maybe run faster than they had imagined possible.Few if any other elite runners have made such a complete transition from the front of the pack to the middle and back. Along the way, Galloway has transformed the lives of untold thousands of his followers. He also kept running marathons, though now usually in 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours, and occasionally even 6 hours. There was nothing wrong with slow, he argued (and showed). It was all about maintaining your body in good enough shape to keep moving forward.Galloway more than practiced what he preached. He went to new frontiers. Several weeks ago, it appeared that he would become the first person known to complete a marathon in 8 consecutive decades of life--from the teens into the 80s. Then "The Universe seemed to develop another plan for me," as he put it. A household accident led to a leg injury that prevented his travel to Honolulu. That's unlikely to stop Galloway for long. The Universe has tossed him obstacles in the past, and he has always developed a new approach to keeping fit and healthy. He'll no doubt follow that path as long as he can.For more on Jeff Galloway and his coaching, training plans, and camps, visit JeffGalloway.com.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. I sit down with one of the true architects of modern running, Jeff Galloway. From making the 1972 Olympic team as an unexpected underdog to creating the RunWalkRun method used by millions of runners today, Jeff's story is packed with history, perspective, and wisdom that still applies right now.We talk about the emotional crash that can come after achieving a massive goal, something I relate to deeply after finishing the Appalachian Trail record, and how that post-Olympic low pushed Jeff to open one of the very first specialty running stores in the world, Phidippides. That store became the foundation for the running boom, community run clubs, and the coaching systems that followed.Jeff breaks down how RunWalkRun was created, why taking walk breaks early actually makes runners faster, and how the data shows average improvements of around seven minutes in the half marathon and thirteen minutes in the marathon. We also dig into his Olympic era training, 140-mile weeks, mile repeats, long runs past marathon distance, and why most training principles today still mirror what worked fifty years ago.We go deep on his friendship with Steve Prefontaine, the early fight for professionalism in the sport, the birth of the Peachtree Road Race, and how those moments shaped modern running as we know it. Jeff also shares his approach to mental training, mantras, step counting, and how meaning is the real fuel behind long term consistency. To close it out, Jeff tells an incredible story about chasing a marathon in eight different decades of life at age eighty, coming back from a heart attack, a fractured toe, and weeks of forced rest to toe the line once again. This episode is equal parts history lesson, coaching clinic, and reminder of why running can be a lifelong pursuit.Find Jeff's books and Jeff online: JeffGalloway.comThis episode is brought to you by Janji, Garage Grown Gear, and CS Coffee.Chapters00:00 The Olympic Journey: Triumphs and Challenges03:41 From Athlete to Entrepreneur: The Birth of a Running Store07:07 Navigating Life After Competition: Finding New Goals10:57 Training Insights: The Evolution of Running Techniques14:14 The Impact of Steve Prefontaine on Professional Running26:30 Reflections on Running Culture and Trends32:19 The Legacy of Pre and Athlete Rights35:41 Building a Running Community40:04 The Birth of the Galloway Method48:49 RunWalkRun: A Game Changer54:41 Mental Strategies for Endurance57:20 The Eight Decade ChallengeSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

For our landmark 200th episode, we're joined by a running legend who needs no introduction—Jeff Galloway, Olympian, author, coach, and the revolutionary mind behind the Run-Walk-Run method. Jeff takes us back to his humble beginnings as an overweight eighth-grader who could barely run half a mile before "hitting the wall." From those inauspicious starts, we follow his journey through collegiate running alongside peers like Bill Rodgers and Amby Burfoot, through military service, and ultimately to the 1972 Olympic Games. What's most revealing isn't just Jeff's athletic accomplishments, but the character behind them—like selflessly pacing his teammate to Olympic qualification while stepping back at the finish line himself. The heart of our conversation explores how Jeff developed his famous Run-Walk-Run method in the early 1970s. What started as a practical solution for beginning runners blossomed into an approach that has helped countless people cross finish lines they never imagined possible. Jeff shares fascinating insights, including that the very first Olympic marathoners all "walked significant portions of the race," and how his method has evolved through data from over 500,000 runners. We also discuss Jeff's special relationship with runDisney from its inception, his remarkable recovery from a heart attack, and his goal to run the Honolulu Marathon at age 80—potentially becoming the first person ever to run marathons across eight decades of life.Throughout the episode, we take time to reflect on our own 200-episode journey, sharing memories, listener messages, and thoughts on how this podcast has grown from a simple idea into a global community. Send us a textRUN, EAT, DRINK, and Celebrate Jeff Galloway's 80th birthday with us!Jeff Galloway, famously known as "America's Coach" and Olympic athlete, is about to achieve something remarkable that no one else has done before – running marathons across eight decades of life. Now approaching his 80th birthday, Jeff shares his journey toward completing this historic milestone at the Honolulu Marathon this December.Behind this extraordinary achievement lies a deeply personal story of resilience. Jeff candidly discusses his recovery from heart failure and a heart attack, revealing how he adapted his renowned Run-Walk-Run method to accommodate his new cardiac reality. Starting with just three seconds of running at a time post-heart attack, he's now able to complete 13-mile training runs by carefully balancing short running segments with strategic walking breaks. His approach isn't just about survival – it's about thriving within new limitations while maintaining the mental benefits that made him fall in love with running decades ago.The Honolulu Marathon holds profound significance for Jeff beyond just being his eighth-decade marathon attempt. It's where he proposed to his wife Barbara nearly 50 years ago, where he stationed during his Navy service, and where he achieved one of his most memorable victories in 1974, defeating Olympic medalists Frank Shorter and Kenny Moore. Now, he's returning with a different goal – simply crossing the finish line while potentially setting a world record.Throughout our conversation, Jeff shares fascinating insights about running's evolutionary importance, explaining how movement shaped human brain development and continues to activate neural circuits that improve our attitude, energy levels, and problem-solving abilities. "Running is what enabled our species to survive," he explains. "When we run, we grow more brain cells and activate the parts of the brain that give us a better attitude, more energy, and the ability to overcome challenges."For those inspired by Jeff's journey, he's created an opportunity to join him in Hawaii through a special travel package that includes accommodations, pre and post-race celebrations, and his personal coaching. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or curious beginner, Jeff's story reminds us all that the true power of running lies not in speed or distance, but in "staying in the game" through every decade of life.Find out more and connect with Jeff at www.jeffgalloway.com. Coach Twiggs addresses returning from injuries, fueling strategies for long runs, and the mental challenges of staying motivated when progress feels slow. His most powerful insight? "If you can't find joy in the moment when you're running, then no race result is going to make you happy."For those tackling Disney challenge races like Dopey or Goofy, Coach shares critical mistakes to avoid, including setting time goals for these multi-day events and walking too much in the parks between races. We also explore the benefits of his customized training approach, which helps runners navigate life's inevitable interruptions without derailing their goals. In our Race Report Spotlight, we travel to Alaska with Courtney and Lance for the scenic Anchorage Half Marathon, complete with moose sightings and breathtaking landscapes along the airport trail system.Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or just beginning your running journey, this episode offers practical wisdom to help you embrace summer training while setting yourself up for success in your fall and winter races. Remember, as Michelle from Erie reminds us in our intro: "Your slow summers make for fast falls."Chis Twiggs's LinksHard Talk PodcastCustomized TrainingRise and Run LinksRise and Run Podcast Facebook PageRise and Run Podcast InstagramRise and Run Podcast Website and ShopRise and Run PatreonRunningwithalysha Alysha's Run Coaching (Mention Rise And Run and get $10 off)Send us a textSupport the showRise and Run Podcast is supported by our audience. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Running coach Jeff Galloway, a former Olympian, teaches a marathon training protocol that has a counterintuitive component to it. New and experienced marathoners are often surprised to learn that he advocates a “run/walk” strategy: alternating running for a set number of minutes with short periods of walking. The premise behind his approach is that the brief interludes of walking enable the body to recuperate briefly, equipping runners to finish their races faster than if they had run all 26.2 miles straight through. The importance of intervals of rest isn’t limited to running. Rest helps us sustain the lengthy effort life requires. It’s something God addresses throughout the Bible, starting in the book of Exodus. In the Old Testament, the rhythms of rest were modeled after God’s work at the time of creation: to labor for six days and then keep “the seventh day [as] a sabbath to the Lord your God” (Exodus 20:10) because God “made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day” (v. 11). As believers in Jesus, there’s no definitive prescription for how often we’re to rest (Romans 14:5–6; Colossians 2:16–17). Rest—whenever and however we enjoy it—is meant to be restorative. Choosing to rest is also an expression of trust in God who’s faithful to supply our needs; we needn’t (and can’t) run forever.
