We are joined by one of my favorite authors Charles Duhigg to discuss his new book, Supercommunicators! We also jump around to chat about other topics like the role of crypto in politics, broader technology trends and AI, and challenges in private equity. Listen to learn more about how you can be the best communicator through having a strong connection. Today we discuss...  Charles Duhigg's new book, Super Communicators, and reflects on his earlier works, The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better. Charles' background as a business journalist covering finance and technology for The New Yorker and his previous experiences at The New York Times and Harvard Business School. A recent article about Silicon Valley's and the crypto industry's political influence. The debate over crypto regulations, contrasting the SEC's push for securities oversight with the industry's argument for recognition as commodities. Long-term changes in business and daily computing due to AI. Private equity and the impact of high interest rates, the overabundance of funds, and the potential for a reckoning in the industry. Historical trends in financial products that offered high yields, such as mortgage-backed securities, SPACs, and crypto lending. Examples of creative financial models like lending gold to jewelers and crypto lending, with an analysis of regulatory challenges and risks. Introduction to the book Supercommunicators, focusing on the skills and principles of effective communication. Explanation of the concept of "matching conversations" to foster trust and understanding in communication. Stories of individuals who overcame communication challenges to become skilled influencers, emphasizing learned rather than innate abilities. Strategies for improving communication through empathy, alignment, and intentional practice. Deep questions allow people to share personal stories, creating a shared sense of understanding and vulnerability. Authentic listening enhances trust and alignment between conversational partners, especially in emotionally charged or conflict discussions. Salespeople and professionals often falter by failing to genuinely engage, focusing instead on their own agenda. Successfully navigating conversations involves identifying their type, aligning with the speaker's mindset, and transitioning between types collaboratively. You probably know Charles Duhigg from his book, The Power of Habit. Or maybe Smarter Faster Better. Now he has a newer book out that is another great resource for school leaders — Supercommunnicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection. Charles shares with Jenn how people mess up communication and how to improve it. He says that most miscommunication happens when we are having different conversations, and when we fail to connect. There are basically three conversation types: decision-making, emotional, and social relationships. You don't want to miss this conversation because you'll see how Jenn uses Charles's own techniques to connect with him emotionally in just ONE minute. And later in the podcast, Charles and Jenn role play a teacher and principal and how to diagnose and address a typical conflict. There are so many nuggets of wisdom for educational leaders in this podcast. One small thing you can do tomorrow? Ask deeper questions with staff. Instead of asking WHAT questions, like "What is happening today?" Ask, "How are you feeling about how things went today?" Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.  In this What's Next Live, I welcome my very first Pulitzer Prize winner to the show. Charles Duhigg is a reporter and the author of The Power of Habit, which spent over three years on the New York Times bestseller list. His second book, Smarter Faster Better, was also a bestseller. He published his latest book, Supercommunicators, earlier this year, and it is (not surprisingly) also a bestseller.  Charles led the team that won the Pulitzer Prize in Exploratory Journalism in 2013 for the AI economy, a series that examined the global economy through the lens of Apple. He also received the George Polk Award, the Great Loeb Award, the Investigative Reporter and Editors Medal, the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award, the Robert F Kennedy Journalism Award, and many others.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anybody who wants to improve their communication skills and learn how to connect with anybody - from colleagues to complete strangers.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE: We all want to walk away from conversations feeling understood, valued, and connected, but that's not always the case. Charles Duhigg explores the ingredients of this kind of conversation and shares how to become a supercommunicator. The good news is that anybody can form these habits and bring this level of communication to any area of their life.   Key takeaways: - There are three buckets that all conversations fall into (practical, emotional, and social). A strong communicator will recognize and match whatever conversation they're in  - The ultimate goal of any conversation is to understand each other - You can prove that you're listening by asking a deep question, repeating back what you heard in your own words, and asking if you got it right   WHAT I LOVE MOST… the story Charles shares about Felix, an FBI crisis negotiator who can connect with and disarm seemingly anybody simply by having a conversation. This story shows that being a thoughtful communicator really is a superpower.  Running Time: 30:46   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani Online: Facebook LinkedIn X   Find Charles Online: Website  LinkedIn  X    Charles' Book:  Supercommunicators

Charles Duhigg is a Pulitzer prize-winning reporter and the author of The Power of Habit, which spent over three years on New York Times bestseller lists. His second book, Smarter Faster Better, was a bestseller, as is his most recent book Supercommunicators. A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Business School, Charles has been a frequent contributor to This American Life, NPR, The Colbert Report, PBS's NewsHour, and Frontline. Charles currently writes for The New Yorker magazine. In this episode we discuss the following: One of the skills that Charles most wants to teach his kids is how to ask questions, and specifically deep questions that get at peoples' values, beliefs, or experiences. Rather than ask someone, “Where do you practice law?” we can ask, “Did you always want to be an attorney?” Nick Epley plays a game with strangers of trying to get people to talk about their hopes and dreams within three questions. He usually gets there in two questions (What do you do? Did you always want to do that?). We often hesitate to ask deep questions, when in reality people love to answer deep questions. When Charles speaks to large groups, he has people share with their neighbor the last time they cried in front of someone. People predict they'll hate the activity, but then they do the activity and love it. Supercommunicators don't have superpowers. They're just a little more thoughtful about communication. Supercommunicators ask deep questions, they show people that they want to connect, and they're aware of the different types of conversations such as practical, emotional or social conversations. How good are you at really communicating? In a world drowning in words, how do you make your words matter?I'm not talking about small talk or working a room or the gift of gab. I'm talking about the kind of communication that works on a deeper level – a level where we truly connect, challenge, grow with, and inspire each other.Back on the podcast this week is Charles Duhigg, who's spent a career in journalism diving into what makes humans do what they do – and today, he's here to talk about what it takes to be a ‘Supercommunicator'. Charles is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times and the New Yorker, and he's written two best-sellers about personal excellence that mesh neuroscience with great storytelling and practical tools: The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better.Charles' newest book is Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection. And this one's a little different -- instead of focusing on how we can maximize our own personal abilities, this one is all about how to be extraordinary in our interactions with each other – the ability to genuinely engage, to echo emotions, and to create space for real, heartfelt exchanges. Charles says communication is humanity's superpower, and lately that ability has become strained. There's evidence of that everywhere -- in politics, on social media, online -- but with the right tools and practice, we can get it back.In our conversation today, we unravel how to reclaim our conversational depth in a world buzzing with superficial interactions. With Fire,MG-----WATCH this episode on our YouTube channel.Connect with us on our Instagram.Order my book, "The First Rule of Mastery" HERE!For more information and shownotes from every episode, head to findingmastery.com.To check out our exclusive sponsor deals and discounts CLICK HERESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But what about reaching that next level? What about being a “supercommunicator”? Supercommunicator is a term used by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and author Charles Duhigg in his latest book, Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection. In this podcast episode, Abrahams and Duhigg explore the precise techniques that distinguish a good communicator from a “supercommunicator:” traits such as active listening; looping for understanding to demonstrate genuine engagement; and identifying what someone is truly feeling, underneath what they actually say.Episode Reference Links:Charles Duhigg: WebsiteCharles Duhigg: BooksDuhigg's New Yorker articleThalia Wheatley's research study: The Repurposed Social Brain Nicholas Epley's research paper: Overly Shallow?: Miscalibrated Expectations Create a Barrier to Deeper ConversationAlison Wood Brooks' research paper: The Conversational Circumplex: Identifying, Prioritizing, and Pursuing Informational and Relational Motives in ConversationMichael Yeomans' research paper: It Helps to Ask: The Cumulative Benefits of Asking Follow-Up QuestionsSheila Heen's research project: Harvard Negotiation ProjectEp.92 - No Regrets: How to Take Risks: YouTube / Website Ep.82 - It's Not About You: Why Effective Communicators Put Others First: YouTube / Website Ep.103 - Simple is a Superpower: How to Communicate Any Idea to an Audience: YouTube / WebsiteConnect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> thinkfast@stanford.eduEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn Page, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInStanford GSB >>> LinkedIn & TwitterChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Charles Duhigg and his new book Super Communicators.(00:01:26) Transition from Habits to CommunicationDuhigg shares how personal experiences and a desire to understand human interactions motivated him to explore communication.(00:02:51) The Neuroscience of Connection The neuroscience behind successful communication and the role of neural entrainment in establishing connection and understanding.(00:04:21) Storytelling as a Powerful Communication ToolThe importance of storytelling in communication and how stories foster empathy and engagement.(00:06:16) Identifying and Aligning Conversation Types Three types of conversations (practical, emotional, social) and the necessity of aligning conversation types for effective communication.(00:08:07) Practices of Super Communicators Insights into the habits of super communicators, including their approach to recognizing conversation types and the importance of deep listening.(00:15:02) Navigating Conflict Through Effective Communication Managing conflictual conversations with a focus on listening, understanding, and managing control dynamics.(00:20:50) Challenges of Online Communication Challenges and strategies for communicating in online and virtual settings.(00:25:04) The Craft and Impact of StorytellingApproaches to storytelling and its significance in making complex ideas memorable and engaging.(00:29:06) Developing New Communication Habits New communication habits developed from Duhigg's research and their impact on personal and professional interactions.(00:31:02) The Final Three QuestionsCharles Duhigg discusses the importance of deep questions, the communicator he most admires, and his recipe for successful communication.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

He writes for The New Yorker and other publications, and is host emeritus of the Slate podcast How To! He's the author of Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection*. We all know that we can't lead if we don't connect. The best leaders not do this well, but they do it consistently with all kinds of people. In this conversation, Charles and I discuss what we can learn from the best communicators to get better ourselves. Key Points Neural entrainment is when we click with someone and can finish each other's sentences (and even our biological responses align). Supercommunicators trigger this consistently across many kinds of relationships. Supercommunicators aren't always loudest or leading the conversation, but they ask more questions and adapt better in the moment. Make emotional replies easier for others. Instead of, “Do you have any hobbies?” ask, “If you could learn anything, what would it be?” Reciprocation of emotion is key for people to connect well. When another party is sharing something joyful, that's an opportunity to share yourself. When something is more contentious, loop for understanding by (1) asking a deeper question, (2) repeating back in your own words, and (3) asking if you got it right. Here in America we are massively overfed, and often undernourished. Likewise we are in an age of dramatic overcommunication, and under-connection. And here lies the opportunity. This is the superpower. To evolve past mere communication and get to connection. This is where the magic happens. If you can connect, you can influence. And you're about to learn that you in fact, don't know how to really connect. Or at least, you can do it better and more consistently. My expert for the series is Charles Duhigg. I got to know Charles intimately on a beach in Florida, nearly a decade ago. He wasn't there, as I was on a getaway with my wife and I was devouring his book, The Power of Habit. I have it right here, marked up and tattered. Still my favorite resource on habits. So when I got contacted by his agency about having him on the show, and that his focus this time was communication, I said schedule it. Immediately. And…he delivered. You're about to hear how to do what few people do well, and you can make the change…immediately. And benefit…immediately. CHARLES DUHIGG is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and the author of The Power of Habit, which spent over three years on bestseller lists and has been translated into 40 languages, and Smarter Faster Better, also a bestseller. His newest book, Supercommunicators: How To Unlock The Secret Language of Connection, is available February, 2024. Charles writes for The New Yorker magazine and is a graduate of Yale University and the Harvard Business School. This week it's my privilege to welcome Charles Duhigg to the show for a fascinating and engaging conversion about his brand new book, Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection. Charles is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and the author of two previous books, “The Power of Habit” and “Smarter Faster Better.” Charles has been featured on “This American Life,” NPR, “The Colbert Report,” PBS's “NewsHour,” and “Frontline.”Duhigg, who previously wrote for the New York Times, was part of the team there that won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism for “The iEconomy,” a series that examined the global economy through the lens of Apple. A Note from James: ?Sometimes I think I'm a pretty good communicator, but sometimes I'm just awful. It's really important to have good skills at communicating - I've done lots of kind of communicating. I've been a public speaker. I've been in sales. I've been an entrepreneur. I've been a standup comedian and I've been a podcaster, but my biggest communications have been with writing and you really always have to put yourself in the shoes of the other person.Fortunately, I just read an incredible book - I highly recommend it -  called Supercommunicators by my good friend, Charles Duhigg. You've previously seen him on the podcast for Smarter Faster Better and his book The Power of Habit. All of his books have been great. But this one just blew me away. I invited him on the podcast. And I had a ton of questions for him. And here he is. Episode Description:The discussion navigates Charles Duhigg's transition from The New York Times to The New Yorker and how it shaped his perspective on communication. He introduces the concept of practical, emotional, and social conversations and how understanding these can improve one's communication proficiency. The conversation also addresses the importance of systematizing communication and how pre-preparation lessens anxiety. Key highlights include the art of negotiation, maintaining a nonjudgmental attitude, and harnessing curiosity for effective interaction. Duhigg also introduces his book 'Supercommunicators', a culmination of three years of work, where he explores these principles in detail. The program encourages audience interaction and asserts that everyone can become a 'supercommunicator' with awareness and technique. Episode Summary:00:01 Introduction and Career Transition to The New Yorker01:18 The Writing Process and Balancing Multiple Projects01:49 The Journey of Writing 'Supercommunicators'02:08 The Art of Writing Books and Stories02:46 Personal Growth and Self-Improvement03:24 The Struggle of Communication and Its Importance04:49 Understanding Different Types of Conversations05:52 The Power of Matching in Conversations07:12 The Role of Authenticity in Communication08:16 The Art of Asking Deep Questions09:35 The Impact of Authenticity and Vulnerability in Conversations13:39 Navigating Difficult Conversations15:16 The Power of Understanding in Conversations22:10 The Art of Recruiting in the CIA29:10 The Importance of Authenticity in Difficult Conversations39:49 Understanding the Power of Communication40:27 The Art of Active Listening40:53 The Importance of Genuine Understanding41:15 The Power of Perspective Sharing41:28 The Impact of Authenticity in Communication41:56 The Role of Empathy in Difficult Conversations42:57 The Pitfalls of Trying to Convince Others43:02 The Power of Motivational Interviewing43:51 The Importance of Shared Concerns in Communication44:37 The Power of Facts in a Common Ground45:07 The Role of Neural Entrainment in Communication45:21 The Power of Connection in Communication45:38 The Importance of Genuine Conversation in Relationships47:50 The Power of Self-Awareness in Communication49:02 The Role of Communication in Influencing Others51:08 The Importance of Understanding Communication Channels53:36 The Power of Authenticity in Online Communication56:22 The Role of Communication in Public Speaking59:07 The Power of Curiosity in Communication01:12:14 The Importance of Respect in Communication01:16:25 The Role of Communication in Building Relationships01:17:56 The Power of Communication in Personal Growth ------------What do YOU think of the show? The Power Of HabitThe Power Of Habit Full Book Introduction Do you think that your daily routine is the product of well-considered decision-making? In reality, it's anything but that. We are primarily driven by our habits, which, once formed, are there to stay. However, once we understand the way habits function, it becomes easier for us to control them. The Power of Habit is an in-depth analysis of habits. It shows how developing new habits can transform our lives beyond recognition. Author : Charles DuhiggCharles Duhigg is a former New York Times reporter who currently writes for The New Yorker magazine. He studied history at Yale University and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is an author of many bestsellers, including The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better, and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, the United States National Academies Communication Award, the National Journalism Award, the George Polk Award, the Gerald Loeb Award, and other accolades. He has also contributed to American Life, The Dr. Oz Show, and other periodicals throughout his career. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today, we'll unlock the book The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. What do you do first thing in the morning? Brush your teeth, wash your face, take a shower, or eat your breakfast? Do you tie your left or right shoe first? Which route do you take to work? When you arrive at the office, do you first check your email or make small talk with your colleagues? Do you eat a healthy salad or a hearty steak for lunch? After you get home in the evening, do you exercise or make your dinner first? You may think that all of these choices are the result of deliberate thinking, but they are not. Most of those actions are the byproduct of your habitual patterns. According to research published by Duke University in 2006, 40% of peoples' daily activities are born from habits, not decisions made after careful consideration. Habits play an essential role in our lives. Over time, they profoundly impact our health, productivity, financial security, and happiness. As a result, we all want to develop good habits or break bad ones. Nevertheless, most of us fail to do so and easily revert to our regular patterns. However, once we understand the science behind habit formation, we can break habits into segments and restructure them to develop good ones that fit our needs and support healthier eating patterns and higher productivity. Over the decades, Charles Duhigg, the author of this book, consulted hundreds of neuroscientists, psychologists, sociologists, and marketing specialists. Based on this extensive research, his book explains the neurology of habit formation and the mechanics of changing habits. We'll divide the premise of this book into five main areas: Part 1: The Neurology of Habit Formation Part 2: How to Change an Old Habit Part 3: How to Create a New Habit Part 4: Finding Keystone Habits Part 5: Are We Responsible for Our Habits?
