The chillier temperatures are going to continue this weekend, but at least the sun will be out. According to the National Weather Service, a low hovering above freezing in the early morning Saturday will lead to patchy frost before 9 a.m. in the Cedar Rapids area. After this it will be sunny, with a high near 62 degrees. A 10-15 mph wind will calm down to 5 mph by Saturday night, with a low around 39 degrees. Sunday will warm up a bit, with a high near 69 degrees, and the wind remaining calm. Sunday night it will be clear, with a low around 44 degrees. Nearly five months after Xavior Harrelson was reported missing from a Montezuma mobile home park where he lived with his mother, authorities confirmed Friday that human remains found in a nearby farm field were of the 11-year-old boy. “The cause of death has not been released at this time,” said a statement from Poweshiek County Sheriff Thomas Kriegel. The boy was reported missing May 27, just shy of his 11th birthday. Posters with Xavior's picture plastered the town, and a reward fund raised about $35,000, but massive searches failed to locate him. On Wednesday, when The Gazette published an article about Steindler North Liberty Ambulatory Surgery Center seeking approval from the State Health Facilities Council, a hospital system not yet publicly identified approached the center requesting it consider “a proposal to build an inpatient hospital that could anchor the Steindler development.” That vision would include an orthopedic specialty hospital, and it could fully transform the long-vacant swath of land into a new health care hub just off Interstate 380. Abnormal influenza activity last year means it may be harder for experts to predict the 2021-22 flu season. But national experts already are warning Americans they could be in for a severe season. Reduced population immunity due to a lack of influenza activity since the pandemic began in March 2020 could mean the United States will face an “early and possibly severe flu season” this year, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials have warned. That potential for a “twindemic” of both widespread flu and COVID-19 cases is at the forefront of local public health officials' minds as the winter months draw closer, highlighting the importance of getting vaccinated against both viruses and taking other steps to avoid infection. Closing with a fun story, on Friday, it was the No. 1 Iowa field hockey's turn to beat a top ranked opponent with a 2-1 penalty-shootout win over No. 2 ranked Michigan. And their victory was greeted with fans rushing the field. In the evening it will get gradually more cloudy, with a low around 64 degrees. Investigators searching for an Iowa boy https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/xavior-harrelson-has-been-missing-for-a-month-authorities-silent-on-investigation/ (who vanished in May days before his 11th birthday) said Thursday they have found human remains matching his description in a nearby cornfield. The remains were discovered by a farmer working in a field a few miles outside Montezuma, where 10-year-old Xavior Harrelson was reported missing May 27 from the trailer park where he lived. The farmer called the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office to the scene, according to Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Assistant Director Mitch Mortvedt. Mortvedt told The Gazette that Xavior's family has been notified of the possible development. Despite the remains having clothes similar to those worn by Xavior when he went missing, positive identification may take more than a month. A University of Northern Iowa biology professor who this month imposed a mask mandate in his class and threatened lower grades for students who did not wear masks has been relieved of his in-person teaching duties for the rest of the semester and won't be eligible for any merit pay this year. Professor Steve L. O'Kane — who is 64 and has been at UNI for 26 years — will be allowed to continue teaching his online courses this semester, according to a disciplinary letter shared with the Gazette. The Board of Regents and the University of Northern Iowa have instituted policies preventing mask mandates.O'Kane says that he feels it is his responsibility to institute mask mandates anyway. O'Kane told The Gazette he holds no animosity toward the UNI administrators who penalized him. And — even if regent and campus policies remain unchanged — he'll impose another mask mandate in his class if given the chance to teach in-person in the spring semester. A driver was extricated from a car and taken to a hospital after his car, going the wrong way on Interstate 380, collided with a semi-trailer truck early Thursday. The 23-year-old male driver, who has not been identified, was taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital after the 1:40 a.m. crash. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said. Police said the driver was going the wrong way on the interstate's southbound lanes near the Seventh Street exit to downtown Cedar Rapids. No passengers were in the man's car. Rain looks to be in our near future again, and there will likely continue to be at least a chance for rain all week until Friday. According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will be likely Tuesday in the Cedar Rapids area, mainly after 2 p.m. It will be cloudy with a high near 82 degrees. Rainfall totals are not expected to be heavy except in isolated areas.  The rain that has fallen in the past week has been a welcome sight for Iowa farmers. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture, precipitation totals ranged from slightly more than one-quarter of an inch in Sheldon to 8.1 inches in Cedar Rapids over the past week. The statewide weekly average precipitation was 2.13 inches, almost double the weekly normal of 1.09 inches. Monday's report followed last week's updated assessment by the U.S. Drought Monitor that much of Iowa continued to face moderate to severe drought conditions, but timely and beneficial rains have at least stabilized crop conditions. About 44 percent of the state reported severe drought — mostly in northern and central Iowa — with more than 90 percent of the state considered abnormally dry. Despite the volatile growing conditions, about 60 percent of Iowa's corn crop was rated in good to excellent condition in Monday's weekly crop progress and condition report. Also, soybean emergence was virtually complete with 19 percent of soybeans blooming and 58 percent of the overall crop rated in good to excellent This past Sunday marked one month since 11-year-old Xavior Harrelson disappeared from a mobile home park in Montezuma. Authorities have kept silent about the investigation for more than two weeks, releasing no new information. For 14 years, the Rummage in the Ramp program in Iowa City has provided a place for apartment-dwellers to get rid of unwanted furniture and household objects, then sold in a giant rummage sale with proceeds going to local nonprofits. But as the pandemic forced the cancellation of the program for summer 2020 and summer 2021, the city is offering a new donation program for this year's moving season. The new pop-up donation drive will be held at several locations around Iowa City. The next drives are scheduled for July 10 and July 31. The July 10 event will be held at the Market Street parking lot near the Bluebird Diner. You can find more information about what items are acceptable to donate at the City of Iowa City website. From the Des Moines Register: Xavior Harrelson's smiling face is everywhere, his dimples shining. Flyers, buttons, billboards and shirts with the 11-year-old's face and description have made their way to states across the country and all over social media. Orange ribbons — a color the Montezuma boy wore frequently, friends say — and posters adorn light posts, homes and local businesses around the rural Poweshiek County town where Xavior was last seen. But there's still no trace of Xavior, a boy known for his smile and kindness and described as "joyous," "remarkable" and "loving." Thursday marked two weeks since he was reported missing from his hometown of Montezuma on May 27. Authorities say they still do not have a "tipping point" in the search to determine whether his disappearance has anything to do with criminal activity. A pool of resources has been deployed across multiple law enforcement agencies in the search. Drones, horses, dogs and other measures have been used in a hunt for Xavior that has stretched into its 15th day. ► More Wednesday: Sheriff announces reward for information on missing Iowa boy On Wednesday, the Poweshiek Sheriff's Office announced a reward of $15,000 and counting for any information that helps investigators locate Xavior. The reward fund was donated by local businesses and community members. The FBI and DCI have also set up a digital media tip line. Anyone who might have digital information regarding Xavior's disappearance can submit tips, such as videos or pictures, at FBI.gov/FindXavior. And hundreds of family members, friends and strangers have also searched fields and wooded areas in Montezuma. Authorities were told Xavior was last seen the morning of May 27 near the trailer he lived in with his mother on Montezuma's northwest side, Mortvedt said. He was possibly wearing a red T-shirt, blue pajama pants and black high-top shoes. Xavior is 4 feet, 8 inches tall, weighs 100 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 84 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area Thursday. The wind will hover at 5 to 10 mph all day. State Rep. Todd Prichard announced Wednesday that he is stepping down as leader of the Iowa House Democrats. Prichard, 47, a Charles City lawyer, was reelected to his fifth term in the House in 2020. He did not indicate whether he'll seek a sixth term in 2022. Prichard led Iowa Democrats during three years of increasing Republican domination, as Iowa voters handed the opposing party control of virtually all levels of government. He criticized Republicans for lack of cooperation during this last legislative session and Gov. Kim Reynolds for a lack of leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. But this, like most things Iowa Democrats did over the last year in particular, was an exercise in futility. The Iowa Board of Regents appears to be responding to concerns levied against them by Republican lawmakers regarding the protection of free speech, particularly conservative speech. During the first meeting Wednesday of the Board of Regents' new free speech committee plans were revealed to systematically address free speech concerns and to ensure a welcoming campus community. The free speech committee was formed by the Regents after they were lambasted by Republican lawmakers after a series of free speech incidents between student groups and campus administrators.  The Iowa State Patrol has released the names of the three family members — two from North Liberty and one from Amana — who were killed in a car-semi crash last week in Fayette County. The three — Terri Westfall, 65, and Ashleigh Rensing, 18, both of North Liberty, and Alli Olsen, 9, of Amana — died in the 2:30 p.m. Friday crash on Highway 150, north of West Union, according to the Iowa State Patrol. A fourth family member, Seth Olsen, 15, of Amana, was seriously injured and taken to Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital and Clinics in West Union. The Patrol said Westfall was driving north in a 2010 Chevrolet Impala when the car crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound semi-trailer truck  After a weekend of little luck, authorities said they are re-evaluating their search for Xavior Harrelson, the 11-year-old boy who disappeared from a Montezuma mobile home park last week. He’s also the man behind LostArtMagic, and he’s blazing a trail as one of the great magicians working to elevate the explanation and instruction of magic on YouTube. Xavior and I have been friends for a few years, and it was on my most recent trip to New York that we sat down for our discussion of social media and YouTube, personal and professional creativity, personal and professional burnout, and intentionality in performance and presentation. A lot has changed for both of us in the time since this conversation was recorded.
