Started over two decades ago, the founding director is still in residence and much loved. Meet Kayla, the founder of P.I.F. Columbus and its driving force. When the community held and helped her family get out of homelessness and furnish a new place, she turned right back around and has been helping others ever since. P.I.F. offers assistance, education, and more to folks who need a little help. From refugee families to people in domestic violence situations, P.I.F. has been there and crowdsourced for people in need. They put on an annual Christmas free store (which happens this weekend! Today, we speak to two members of Columbus area direct and mutual aid organizations: Columbus Blessing Boxes are similar to Little Free Libraries (in that people build free standing structures and fill them for people to give and take for free), but instead of books, people load in non-perishable necessities like food, toiletries, and baby supplies. People are starting to build them everywhere, and CBB has free pdf blueprints if you'd like to make on! You can get the location of yours listed on their website, too!The HI Project (HI stands for Homo Improvement) started out as a group of women helping one another out with home improvement, repair, and cleaning. These days, the group is inclusive of all genders and sexualities. Meet Nadia and Marcus, two staffers from a non-profit supporting New Americans in three major Ohio cities: Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo. The group exists to help immigrants and refugees settle into their new homes in Ohio and they assist with everything needed- from language and citizenship classes to teaching about American culture and social changes a family or individual may experience. CHOICE is central Ohio's oldest continuously running midwifery practice and one that trains other midwives for the future. It also has a Mothership Fund, which helps subsidize midwifery care for low income child bearers. Meet three menstruators on a mission! Anusha, a campus and national organizer for period.org, and Tickles and Pokes (of the project Tickles and Pokes) all work tirelessly to end period poverty and ensure that menstrual supplies are available for free to all menstruators, like toilet paper. Did you know that 1 in 10 girls can't afford to buy menstrual products in western countries like the UK and US. And it's much higher in other countries. Every day, children miss school because of period poverty. This causes them to fall behind academically. 40% of girls have used toilet paper or newspaper or other unsanitary products because they couldn’t afford menstrual products. Meet Rachel and Robert form the Columbus, OH chapter of Food Not Bombs. Chances are, you've heard of this long-standing autonomous mutual aid group. They distribute free vegetarian and vegan food worldwide on every continent- showing the world that there is plenty, if only access is given.The Columbus chapter operates two serving stations a week in different parts of the city and follows the three principles of all FNB chapters:1. All food is vegan or vegetarian and is freely given to everyone, rich or poor, stoned or sober. No ID checks or income statements needed. Food is a human right.2. This is a leaderless group, with chapters leading themselves by consensus and including those they serve in decision-making.3. Herbalists Without Borders is an international non-profit working in 50 countries on heath care and food justice. They work in war-torn and famine-plagued areas, were instrumental at the Standing Rock protests in delivering medical care on the ground, and run a veterans clinic in Washington, D.C., among other projects.The central Ohio chapter has been formed in the last year and has started work running a People's Clinic and Apothecary. They are currently running a clinic (sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds) every other month with free herbal medicine. Meet Bradley and Kate, two of the organizers of Reeds and Roots, a skillshare that presents "earth skills" such as permaculture, composting, herbalism, blacksmithing, and traditional crafts.
