John Maytham speaks to Don Pinnock about a proposed rescue and rebuilding plan for Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, examining concerns over staffing, conservation capacity, plant collections, funding, governance and the long-term future of one of South Africa’s most important botanical institutions. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. An encore of our 'savings the sloths' episode with an update from Marilyn. This past week (late April/early May 2026) we've seen numerous stories about sloths that were lost during what was supposed to be preparation for a new exhibit/destination in Florida called Sloth World. It came to light that many of the sloths died due to a combination of poor travel conditions, failure to keep a proper climate in their holding areas, and digestive upsets. This exhibit will now NOT be opening due to what has happened, and Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens is currently working ‘round the clock to save the remaining sloths. I want to encourage anyone who has a heart for these precious, magical little animals to visit one of the three websites shown here and learn more and even to donate if you are so inclined: www.slothconservation.org www.jaguarrescue.foundation www.centralfloridazoo.org Everything helps. Let's support those helping our wildlife, and let's also work to educate more people about the specific challenges some of these species are facing. Thank you!

Just when things looked to be fading away, the Lions we know and love returned with a statement backs-against-the-wall win to breathe life into the hat trick campaign. It was Brisbane at our best from the start of the game, with the confidence and camaraderie back in full force for a win we so desperately needed.A win over the Suns proved our turning point in 2024, and again in the semi-final last year - now, with the bye nearly in sight, we're hoping this might prove the launching pad for another surge to September. Also, the marathon is done! A story that began last July reached its culmination in the Botanical Gardens late on Sunday morning, with Mike Whiting joining Chris Fagan in the supercoach realm of taking on a basket case and turning things around. We've got the full rundown from the Victory Lap, with a gloomy month behind us and joy on the agenda on all fronts. Also this week:-Where does Eric come back into the side?-Our horrific record against Richmond-Dom's scheme to turn Logan off the idea of TasmaniaAnd much more!We are here always thanks to Kartable. Some places do not ask for your attention. They change you quietly. You arrive carrying noise, deadlines, distractions and the weight of everyday life. And then somewhere between the trees, the silence, the air itself, something begins to soften. You remember there is another way to live in the world. More connected. More awake. More human. This episode of Speaking of Travel lives inside that feeling. What unfolds here is more than a discussion about nature or stewardship. It is a reflection on presence, on caring deeply for the land and for one another, and on the quiet power of creating spaces where people can reconnect to something larger than themselves.Drake Fowler, Executive Director of The North Carolina Arboretum, brings a rare kind of humanity to this conversation... thoughtful, grounded, compassionate, and deeply aware of the relationship between the natural world and the human spirit. You can hear the sincerity in his story and feel the intention behind the work being done.At the heart of this episode is a sacred connection and understanding that nature is not separate from us, but essential to who we are as human beings. Through stories, reflections, and insight, we explore the ways wild spaces can restore us and reconnect us to ourselves and to each other. This conversation is filled with authenticity and quiet wisdom and reminds us that places created with intention and care can become sanctuaries where people feel seen and are welcomed. Through education, conservation, and community connection, the NC Arboretum is a place where nature and humanity meet in meaningful ways. This is a beautiful and heartfelt conversation that will leave you inspired and comforted. And perhaps seeing the world a little differently. ❤️Thanks for listening to Speaking of Travel! This week, we explore the long and winding history behind the creation of a Botanical Garden in Atlanta - a dream that took more than 50 years to become reality. The story begins with Eugene Schofield Heath, who first pushed for a garden in the city in 1918. From ambitious Works Progress Administration projects along the Chattahoochee River to stalled plans caused by World War II, Atlanta repeatedly tried, and failed, to establish a permanent botanical garden. It wasn't until the 1970s, when civic leaders and garden advocates rallied around a new site in Piedmont Park, that the idea finally took root. Want to support this podcast? This week Erin and Bryan are both enjoying the fall weather in Santa Fe and New York, sharing some recent restaurant experiences, what it's like being interrupted by Boomers, and reminisce about The Rachel haircut. Bryan discusses The Church of Norway apologizing to the LGBTQ+ community for decades of discrimination, and for causing shame, harm and pain, plus Houston removing a rainbow crosswalk memorial and Snoop Dogg making amends after recent comments about the lesbian storyline in Pixar's Lightyear. Erin tears into the Tech Right Phyllis Schlafly - Katherine Boyle - who's been helped by the feminist movement but wants to tear down those pathways for those coming up behind her, plus local candidates in upcoming elections you should know about and support.
