This week, voices. A collection of contemporary folk singers with unique and authentic voices recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Ballad singing is a primary form of expression in folk music. Folk ballads merge melody and story to recount events but also transport the listener to an emotional space. How well a ballad can bring the listener into that space very much depends on the singer. Less important to an effective folk singer are the rudimentary aspects of singing than is the authentic sound of their voice. The timbre and character of the singer's voice in service to the ballad becomes the vehicle, transporting the listener into that emotional space. Ozark original and legendary folk balladeer Almeda Riddle for an example. As much as the stories Almeda relates, it's the sound of her instantly recognizable and authentic voice that moves listeners deep into the hills and hollers of the Ozarks. Featured on this episode are an all-star lineup of contemporary folk balladeers including: world renowned vocalist & educator Moira Smiley with the Jayme Stone Project; Ozark original & Smithsonian Folklife Festival performer Carolina Mendoza; Ozark original and Creek Rocks vocalist & multi-instrumentalist Cindy Woolf; OFC regular & prolific singer-songwriter Carolyn Carter; Ozark original vocalist & multi-instrumentalist Pam Setser with The Ozark Granny Chicks; inimitable folk singer & multi-instrumentalist Grace Stormont; and award winning Eureka Springs, AR singer-songwriter Melissa Carper with The Buffalo Gals. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1973 archival recording of Ozark original singer, Aunt Ollie Gilbert, performing the traditional Ozark ballad “The Ballad of Cole Younger” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the “Voice of the Ozarks,” the legendary Ozark original balladeer Almeda Riddle. Featured is a 1957 recording of Almeda performing the traditional Ozark ballad “The Oxford Girl,” courtesy of the Lyon College Wolf Folklore Collection.

Half a century ago, one of the first all-female bluegrass bands gave us the genre's first album played exclusively by women; their banjo player's mother was embarrassed about her daughter's choice of profession. It was only fifty years or so after the passage of the 19th Amendment, after all. Today, there are more all-female bluegrass and roots music bands, but they remain an exception. Join us as we talk with two of the best: the newgrass oriented quintet Della Mae, and the more high lonesome minded five piece Sister Sadie. Both groups have a range of generations in their ranks, and plenty of experience with taking on hurdles that female artists of every age still face all these years after Buffalo Gals took those first steps on their shared paths. Della Mae (standing) and Sister Sadie (sitting) In this episode, we talk in wide ranging conversations ranging from songwriting, collaborations, covers and solo projects, to keeping both themselves and their audiences fully engaged, and we sample some of their latest music throughout. You will hear what both have in store for the coming year as well, which includes being part of the lineup of the 2nd annual Earl Scruggs Music Festival on Labor Day weekend in Tryon, North Carolina. Songs heard in this episode:“Raleigh's Ride” by Sister Sadie, from Sister Sadie II“Dry Town” by Della Mae, from Family Reunion, excerpt“Diane” by Sister Sadie, excerpt“Something You Didn't Count On” by Jaelee Roberts, from Something You Didn't Count On, excerptThank you for visiting, and are even more grateful whenever you share this with someone. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, to kick-start our fifth season we call into an organic vegetable farm in Texas to chat with an upright bassist who also happens to be a former New Orleans ace street performer, and singer and songwriter, who sounds like she might have stepped out of a saloon in 1955 filled with the warm echoes of her heroes Hank Williams and Patsy Cline: Melissa Carper. Is there such thing as a “new nostalgia” movement happening under our noses in the Americana scene? I'm going to say there is, thanks to folks like Melissa. She's lived several lives as a working music maker in groups like Sad Daddy (“Daddy” being her beloved nickname), Buffalo Gals, and the Carper Family (her folks in Nebraska growing up had a roving band), before collecting her favorite vintage-tinted songs and breaking out with her whip-smart solo debut Daddy's Country Gold and then 2022's Ramblin' Soul, which she penned while working on that vegetable farm with her fiddle player/partner during the height of the pandemic. The latter record is a celebration of the small victories and tiny glories of taking your hard earned art onto the road, while also pausing to reflect on the important folks she lost recently, like her beloved pup. While Melissa gets a good chuckle about being called the “Hillbilly Holiday” with her high lilting voice and silky delivery, it's the impossible pleasure of hearing the lost music of pre-modern country, jazz and blues fronted by a proudly queer bassist lead-singer that almost seems like science fiction when you look at it deeply. Make “new nostalgia” a new genre! Or throw genre right out the window and just turn modern classics like “Makin' Memories” (one of my top songs of 2022) up nice and loud, however you listen these days. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/Upright bassist, singer and songwriter Melissa Carper has been playing in bands since she took up the position of bass in her family band at the age of 12. She grew up with a reverence for country music in her small town Nebraska family. The original Carper Family band toured regionally on the weekends at Elks lodges, VFWs and small bars. Little Melissa made $50 a gig, which allowed her to take her friends out for dinner and give her an early sense of what it was like to be a paid musician. She attended school for music, but ended up leaving two and a half years in and began her rambling.Melissa's lived in Nebraska, New York, Alaska, New Orleans, Arkansas and Austin to name only a few. She usually has stayed around a place for a couple years until she moves on. Along the way, she's formed many bands like a new version of The Carper Family, Sad Daddy and Buffalo Gals. In recent years, she's been releasing albums under her own name, which is strange because she does not like being the center of attention. Her writing is filled with humorous quips, even though she claims to have a “slow wit.” Her classic country sound is unique in that her writing is sharp, her delivery is relaxed and her voice is unreal. She spent a lot of time studying the voices of Hank Williams and Leadbelly to develop that honeyed, yet raw sound. Melissa Carper is the real deal! Join your host Greg Howard Jr as he gets to the heart of what makes a musician tick with the incomparable MELISSA CARPER!!!After the success of her critically-acclaimed 2021 release Daddy' s Country Gold, Melissa Carper, dubbed “HillBillie Holiday” by friend and collaborator Chris Scruggs, was eager to get back in the studio. With co-producers Andrija Tokic (St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Hurray For The Riff Raff) and Dennis Crouch (The Time Jumpers) behind the boards again at Tokic's analog paradise The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, Carper assembled that same crew of magical music makers - plus a few more - to embark on her newest effort, Ramblin' Soul, set for release November 18th via Thirty Tigers.Carper's deep, old-timey music roots were firmly planted as a child, playing upright bass and singing in her family's traveling country band in rural Nebraska. Her love of country classics was cultivated as she laid beneath the console listening to her parents' record collection. Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, and more became the soundtrack of her youth. When Carper's father gifted her a collection of Jimmie Rodgers' recordings, she began to find her voice and calling as a songwriter. Carper attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a music scholarship, and spent much of her time in the music library, instinctively drawn to the great jazz classics and jazz vocalists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. She also discovered Lead Belly, uncovering a deep well within when singing his songs. After two years of college, wanderlust set in, and Carper hit the road in the family's 1980 Dodge Maxi Van, and landed in historic Eureka Springs, Arkansas. There, she was welcomed into the busking community, and found a new home base—a place to write, reflect, and rejuvenate in years to come. As she belted out the lyrics to “Ramblin' Man” life began to imitate art. Carper put a few hundred thousand miles on her vans and pick-up trucks, playing the streets and clubs of New Orleans, Austin, and even a stint in NYC as a founding member of The Maybelles. Magnetically pulled into the cultural heritage wherever she went, she immersed herself in the music of those who sang on those same street corners, and off the beaten path in times gone by.Along the way, she founded award-winning bands like power trio The Carper Family, the perfect outlet for her unique skills and style. The band brought her original work to life in a simple yet dynamic fashion that also served her inspirations - country, bluegrass, western swing, and old- style jazz, playing festivals and shows across the globe, and on shows like “A Prairie Home Companion.” Carper also holds a spot in award-winning Arkansas foursome Sad Daddy, and founded roots duo Buffalo Gals with Sad Daddy bandmate and partner, award-winning fiddler Rebecca Patek. In 2020, grappling with the loss of regular gigs, Carper and Patek moved to a friend's farm near Austin, working in exchange for housing, organic vegetables, and fresh, country air. “I had a handful of songs about rambling around and living a free life that I wanted to weave through the album,” Carper recalls. “I wrote the title track driving back home to Texas, and it felt like the seeds of the next album were planted.”Melissa Carper's WebsiteBandcampInstagramFacebook

We'll get into some of the queer culture surrounding the Gold Rush that you definitely didn't learn in public school. But what started as a deep dive into queer culture turned into so, so much more.

"Buffalo Gals" is a traditional folk song performed by such artists as Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen. The song, however, is more than an upbeat tune. Behind its bars is a story of racism and ignorance perhaps born right here in Western New York.

Shooting Western Feature Films with iPhones - Travis Mills

Travis Mills is the Director and CEO of Running Wild Films. He has challenged himself to make 12 Western films in 12 months, one per month. In episode 105 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking, we share the story of one of these films, which was shot with the iPhone. Read the article for this episode in our Smartphone Filmmaking Publication: https://medium.com/smartphonefilmmaking      Travis loves a good challenge and calls himself a bit “crazy” so he jumped at the thought of shooting one of 12 Western films in 12 months with the iPhone. In 2013 he challenged himself to shoot 52 films in 52 weeks, and that was part of how he began to set incredible goals as a filmmakers. He continued to make films and feature films over the years and he came to the idea that he would make 12 feature films in 12 months. However, he upscaled that challenge because he figured it wasn't hard enough. Remember, Travis is a bit crazy, right? He decided to make the most challenging features by shooting Westerns.    Westerns are a unique genre because of the challenges, from sets, locations, horse wrangling, shootouts…it's a big challenge in itself but shooting it all with the iPhone is both interesting and intriguing. One one hand, all these details can be challenging for any filmmaker using traditional cameras. On the flip side, it also becomes a relief to film using a smartphone due to the minimalist production process. Thinking about tearing down the equipment after shooting a scene with a smartphone is a lot easier to do with a small camera. What people think about though, is those grand shots of people riding horses and stage coach scenes. That didn't seem to get in the way of the film, from the rough footage I watched, because again…the story itself is captivating. As you are following the story, the wide shots on the Western landscape are simply a part of the storyline.    Travis is one of the characters in the film, one of the protagonists. But the main character is Pearl Hart, played by Lorraine Etchell. Her performance is worthy of mentioning. Her acting brings her character to life and watching her really brings you close to the turmoil she experienced in her life's story.   The Woman Who Robbed A Stagecoach film tells the true story of Pearl Hart, a female outlaw who became famous for robbing a stagecoach and escaping prison in Arizona at the turn of the century.   The film also features actors Travis Mills, Kevin Goss, John Marrs, Michael Estridge, John Schile, and many more. It was written and directed by Travis Mills, and is part of the “12 films made in 12 months” and the first Western feature film shot with an iPhone.    Most of the film was shot in Globe, Arizona. But they traveled to Yuma and they were able to shoot at the prison in the cell where Pearl Hart was held. Travis shares his character, and the unknown history about him which he had to create for the story in the film. The conversation brings the topic of bringing actual history into a film based on a true story. One of the ways to do that, was his insistence on shooting in the actual locations in Arizona, instead of shooting the film in more picturesque locations.    Travis was inspired by Sean Baker's Tangerine and since then, he's been twirling the idea of making a feature with an iPhone. In the podcast, he shares some of the ideas he's had for a mobile feature but it was the story of Pearl Hart that he kept thinking about.    The budget for the movie was about $6,000 and it was a 15-day shoot. Considering it's also a Western, it was a very modest budget. His crew was four people and they had no experience shooting on the iPhone. They learned about mobile filmmaking along the way.    Listen to Travis share his own story of what brought him into film. Part of that story is that he was obsessed with movies growing up. Interestingly, he grew up in the Comoro Islands in the southeastern coast of Africa.    Pioneers are paving the way for the future of the mobile filmmaking industry. It's inspiring to share pioneers like Travis Mills in our podcast. If you are looking for inspiration and information about this niche industry where more and more people are making incredible films using smartphone cameras.    Travis may also be the first filmmaker to shoot 12 feature films in 12 months, which he is using traditional filmmaking cameras for the rest of the films. We asked him to elaborate a bit on filming all his films, regardless of the camera he used on the rest of the films.   Close to the end of our conversation, Travis shares how the daunting process of feature filmmaking can be achievable, and how to push yourself as a filmmaker. He shares some of the filmmakers that inspire him.   SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking: The Voice of Mobile Film™ is for everyone who ever wanted to or is curious about making movies and videos using smartphones.    Watch the trailer for the film which features a version of Buffalo Gals, performed by Courtney Odom: https://youtu.be/ig1xhBtyDUI      Follow Travis Mills and Running Wild Films:   Running Wild Films Website: http://www.runningwildfilms.com/   Twitter for Running Wild Films: https://twitter.com/RunWildFilms     Running Wild Films on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1uVUsOVjqQgIId1UF7khhw     Travis Mills on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3524360/     Travis on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/travismillsdirector/     Travis on Twitter: https://twitter.com/travis_director       Our Links:     Smartphone Filmmaking Publication on Medium: https://medium.com/smartphonefilmmaking       Mobile Filmmaker Shop Online Store: http://mobilefilmmakershop.com      Subscribe, support and listen to bonus episodes and more on Patreon: http://patreon.com/sbppodcast      Support podcast host Susy Botello: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/susybotello     Mobile Film Stories on Clubhouse: https://www.joinclubhouse.com/club/mobile-film-stories      SBP Podcast Website: http://sbppodcast.studio        SBP Podcast on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14682500/reference     Video and Film Streaming Distribution for Smartphone Films: http://mobilefilmstories.com        International Mobile Film Festival Website: http://internationalmobilefilmfestival.com       Facebook: http://facebook.com/sbppodcast       Twitter: http://twitter.com/sbppodcast       Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mobilefilmsd/       iTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sbp-podcast/id1296673665      Susy Botello on Twitter: http://twitter.com/susybotello       SBP Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4ISEF0SZOLyRpw20loXzlo#upsell         YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/mobilfilmfestival?sub_confirmation=1         © Copyright 2021 S. As a supplement to Episode 42, we present a new series where we investigate and discuss a particularly obscure or noteworthy single: something that can't be denied on both sides!! And what better way to start than with Norfolk, Virginia's wildest girl group, the Azaleas?! Side A is a blatant retread of Gary US Bonds' 1961 non-hit, “Not Me”, retitled “Hands Off” (2:02). A crazy organ sound, lots of “lowtower,” and the sound of a group of people who are enjoying demolishing the studio and the social fabric with their ferocious energy. The b-side “Our Drummer Can't Keep Time” is even more bonkers (59:58): it's the tale of a untamed tubthumper named Gregory Garfone , played to the tune of “Buffalo Gals.” This has got to be the fastest song we've ever played!! All that, and we even add a bonus track, Jimmy Soul's “Church Street in the Summer Time”, which celebrates many players of the Norfolk scene (1:35:22).

This week, a collection of exceptional Ozark original singer-songwriters recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these canorous poets. Folk songs don’t just materialize out of thin air and they don’t grow on trees. They’re conceived and written by regular people to express their feelings, their experiences and their culture. Although we tend to think of folk songs as records of a distant past, contemporary songwriters carry on this rich tradition. Nowhere is the tradition more alive than in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri. Join us, as we present a small sampling of true contemporary Ozark original singer-songwriters creating brand new folk music for these modern times. Featured on this episode of Ozark Highlands Radio are: Buffalo Gals band member Melissa Carper of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Mountain View, Arkansas’ own Carolyn Carter; Batesville, Arkansas native and Creek Rocks band member Cindy Woolf; Mountain View resident and Ozark Folk Center regular, Grace Stormont; Taller Than You band member and hammered dulcimer champion, Mineral Point, Missouri’s Ben Haguewood; Buffalo Gals band member and award winning fiddler, Eureka Springs, Arkansas’ Rebecca Patek; Traveling minstrel and multi-instrumentalist Willi Carlisle of Fayetteville, Arkansas. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1973 archival recording of Ozark original singer-songwriter Jimmy Driftwood performing his well known song “The Battle of New Orleans,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this week’s guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater discusses traditional songs that are unmetered & crooked and do not fit into our common ideas about rhythm. Hear Aubrey as she dares us to try and dance to these crooked tunes.

In this episode, recorded in front of a live audience at the Sierra Fiddle Camp, clawhammer banjoist Allison de Groot shares her story of delving deep into the Appalachian Banjo tradition while growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She talks about working with luminaries like Bruce Molsky and Tatiana Hargreaves and talks about her work researching the playing of great woman banjo players from the past.  The opening tune "Wabash Blues" is from the playing of Virginian banjo player Hobart Smith but originally entered the tradition from the playing of an enslaved African musician. The set of tunes at the end starts with "Frederick's Jig" written by Allison and finishes with the classic traditional tune "Buffalo Gals". Also, interviews with these incredibly talented Buffalo Gals. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Kenny Sims performing the traditional song “Butcher’s Boy.” Writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles the curious history of Dogpatch USA, a unique theme park in the Ozarks for 25 years. The Arkansas duo Buffalo Gals is comprised of Melissa Carper on vocals, upright bass & guitar and Rebecca Patek on vocals, fiddle & guitar. Both women being extraordinary songwriters as well as accomplished musicians, they bring to the stage a range of stories and down home feeling that’ll have your toes tapping and your heart yearning. Blending a classic Country music & Americana sound with a bit of humor and a decidedly modern sensibility, the Buffalo Gals’ music is at once authentic as well as intimately relatable. Rebecca Patek’s most recent album “Come up and Meet Me” was named Best Bluegrass Album for 2016, by the Independent Music Association. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Kenny Sims performing the traditional song “Butcher’s Boy,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. 23. Buffalo Gals Written by John Hodges aka Cool White in 1844 As I was walking down the street, down the street, down the street, a pretty little gal I chanced to meet, Oh she was fair to see. Chorus: Buffalo gals won’t you come out tonight, come out tonight, come out tonight, buffalo gals won’t you come out tonight, we’ll dance by the light of the moon. I asked her if she’d take a walk, have a talk, take a walk, her feet took up the whole sidewalk as she stood close to me. I asked her “Would you want to dance, want to dance, want to dance?” I thought that I would have a chance to shake a foot with her. Oh, I danced with the gal with a hole in her stockin’ and her hip kepta-rockin’ and her toe kept a-knockin’ I danced with the gal with a hole in her stockin’ and we danced by the light of the moon. 更多内容,关注Anna老师亲子英语微课 个人微信:15942686862; 微信公共账号:magicforest2016
