Episode 28 of The Clever Content Show features a cracking conversation between Iain and Tom about how people seem to be turning to closed communities instead of broadcasting to the world. They also cover Spotify’s decision to ban political advertising from their platform. Do you prefer to send your messages out into the open world of social media or are you more likely to live in a private Facebook or WhatsApp group? It seems many people are preferring the latter these days and it may be part of a growing trend and the continued rise of communities. Iain and Tom give their take on the situation and look at some of the reasons why it might be happening. They also explore what effect the growth in communities might have on brands and companies. Can marketeers and content folk still reach people if they are spread more widely in smaller groups? In the second half of the show, our duo turn to Spotify and its recent decision to stop political ads on their platform. Affront to freedom of speech or simply too much moderation required for a company that doesn’t turn a profit? Perhaps a bit of both. It’s fair to say we’re not entirely convinced. In the second half of the show we go on to look at the word ‘content’ itself. The latest episode of the Clever Content Podcast is out on the airwaves, as we explore Oatly’s decision to make its carbon footprint and commitment to lower CO2 emissions the focus of its marketing. While I take a rather cynical view, Iain and Anna (first time on the show!) consider the reality of climate change and how Oatly’s potentially controversial but always ‘to-the-point’ message is likely to hit home with a younger audience. It’s also consistent with their previous branding too, as Oatly has for some time looked to position itself against the dairy industry, as opposed to other oat drink companies. It’s certainly an interesting way of doing things and makes for – we hope! – a good discussion. In the second part of the show, we take a trip down memory lane to answer a few social media questions. Well, following on from last week’s conversation about quirky copy in curious spaces, first we looked at Virgin Trains and its successful Avocard campaign. One of the reasons it did so well was the way Virgin’s social team were able to spot an opportunity, come up with an idea and execute it well in such a short space of time. And of course, having the structure in place and confidence to sign it off and let it out into the wild.Tom played another game of GoodBad (Bad Good?), in which he asked Iain and Coral to share their thoughts on some rather creative copy from Cards Against Humanity and Kallo. We’re back for another episode of the Clever Content Podcast. This time round Iain and Tom tackle the tricky topic of user research. How much research goes into your content? Do you speak to your audience before you get cracking? Or do you just bat on without a care in the world for whether it’s going to help or reach the people it’s aimed at? We think there are lots of lessons to be learned from the content design approach that stemmed from the work that went into creating gov.uk – even for more campaign-style projects. With clear content backed by real data and insight, you can’t go wrong. On the other hand, you could take a more hostile approach to dealing with your audience. We go through some pet peeves, including badly written links, colour contrast accessibility issues and the dreaded manipulinks on sign up forms. Ugh! It’s time for another episode of the Clever Content Podcast. In this show, Iain and Tom revisit PaddyPower’s controversial sponsorship of Huddersfield Town and the possible effect of negative brand association. They also explore the possible reasons behind Facebook’s decision to add the ‘…from Facebook’ branding to both WhatsApp and Instagram. Brand association – what’s it worth? In episode 12 of the podcast, we talked about PaddyPower’s somewhat garish kit sponsorship of Huddersfield Town. We decided it was probably all a big publicity stunt and… we were right! This time round, we go back to that conversation and look at what might be in this kind of brand association for Huddersfield Town – beyond cold hard cash. And if that’s the case, is it worth it? Clearly it must be for them and many other sports teams, but what about smaller brands and even influencers on YouTube and social media? Building the right partnerships and developing a loyal audience is all about trust, we reckon. WhatsApp and Instagram (from Facebook) Do you know that both WhatsApp and Instagram are owned by Facebook? You probably do, but what about the average person happily scrolling and posting away on those platforms. Do they know? Well, if they didn’t before, they might well now, as Facebook has decided to apply some subtle branding on a few key screens in WhatsApp and Instagram. They say the aim is to make it clearer that they are a ’network’ of apps and part of the same family. But is that the real reason? Might this be an attempt to negate some of the problems raised by Facebook’s recent privacy scandals by associating with two brands that have remained much cleaner and well-liked? It’s time for another episode of the Clever Content Podcast and this time, Iain is joined by Richard Tissington, Head of Video at Content OD and Dave Moore, Project Director. Both Rich and David have many years experience producing, shooting and editing video content, so we decided to go more in-depth on the all-important pre-production process. This is a topic we touched on at the end of the last episode of the podcast. This time round, we look at the development stage too, which comes before pre-production takes places and is all about getting the idea right and the planning behind the project. In the second half of the show, the chaps go on to discuss those occasions where they had to ‘learn the hard way’. So if all that sounds right up your street, get yourself a brew, pop your headphones on and listen in. Subscribe to the show! In episode 9 of the Clever Content Podcast, me and Iain are joined by our Head of Video, Richard Tissington to talk about Airbnb’s foray into the world of filmmaking. ! The company behind the world’s largest online marketplace for home-sharing and tourism experiences has produced a documentary called Gay Chorus Deep South. Currently doing the film festival circuit, Airbnb says the project is in line with its values as a company and a response to the political environment in the US. In the show, we talk about how this documentary – and the genre in general – could be a great tool for telling stories that fit with a company brand. In the second part of this episode, we quiz Rich on what happens once a client has said that they want us to produce a video. We talk about the importance of a pre-production process and getting to the bottom of what the client is really looking for. Hopefully, you’ll find a few useful nuggets of advice in there. Our main topic was inspired by a marketing meetup attended by Tom, where the point was made that we have to think harder and smarter about designing content for our audience. It's important to get out of our bubble and do some research on what the target audience will respond to. In the second half of the show Iain and Tom share their most used bookmarks. How much responsibility do they bear when things go wrong? What’s it like to work with influencers? We cover all these questions and more. This time around, me and Iain start by looking at the use of perimeter ads at football matches that are tailored to your location. Then it’s on to the world of YouTube and what it’s like to work with influencers on the platform. There’s been some talk of influencers needing to be a bit more open about follower counts and to improve behaviour in general. But then others reckon you should be off to Vidcon not Cannes. We share our own positive experiences of working with influencers. So, here it is! The second episode of The Clever Content Podcast from the team here at Content OD. This is your chance to listen to us pick out and pull apart some of the content and content-related news that’s taken our fancy over the last couple of weeks. In episode 2, Iain and Chantal start by looking at the marketing campaign around the Hollywood blockbuster, Deadpool 2. It’s a campaign that does things a little differently and has captured people’s attention, even if it’s not to everyone’s liking. The question is: what do we think? We then take a left turn to cover social media and online bullying, including what the government and social media companies are doing about it. With new platforms available to help teach social media to children, could the solution be a more open-minded, collaborative approach? Next we reflect on the recent splurge of GDPR-related emails that we have been receiving (and sending, no doubt). Which emails hit the mark? Was it better to play it straight or was a more informal tone of voice the way to go? We go through a few examples to see what’s what. Finally, Instagram has recently announced some new features that are coming your way, including AR filters and video chat. How might brands take advantage with their content? And is Instagram on the verge of feature bloat? We think out loud and have our say to finish off the show.
