Simon Reeve is a broadcaster and writer best known for his TV documentaries which combine travel and adventure with investigations into the challenges faced by the places he visits. His journeys have taken him across jungles, deserts, mountains and oceans, and to some of the most dangerous and remote regions of the world. He's dodged bullets on frontlines, dived with seals and sharks, survived malaria, walked through minefields and tracked lions on foot.Simon grew up in Acton in west London. He experienced anxiety and depression as a teenager and left school with few qualifications. He eventually found a job in the post room at the Sunday Times and from there progressed to working with the news teams, filing stories on a range of subjects from organised crime to nuclear smuggling. In the late 1990s he wrote one of the first books about Al-Qaeda and its links to Osama Bin Laden. His expertise in this area was quickly called upon after the 9/11 attacks in the USA, and he became a regular guest on American television and radio programmes. The current pandemic put Simon's overseas trips into abeyance and he has turned his attention to the UK, recently making programmes about Cornwall and the Lake District. The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast

“Hi guys, I'm back, always listening but not sent in a question for you to discuss too often these days. Can I ask, who do you feel the BBC is lining up to replace Sir David Attenborough? Who do you think could replace him?” That's the first listener question sent for discussion, and that comes from Vandana in India. There are people like Chris Packham and Simon Reeve, who though aren't exactly being lined up to replace him, are perceptibly doing more. Is there really a conscious choice to replace David Attenborough? We all know that we can't. His influence will go on, as it is huge. Stuart's conclusion is that the BBC aren't trying to replace him, and they really shouldn't be, and should move onto someone else. William talks about the idea of replacement being incorrect, that you don't replace, you get something new. Pedro, a long standing listener from Portugal has sent in the second question for discussion today, and is as follows: “40% of the Earth's surface, that isn't frozen, is given over to intensive monoculture style farming, and the volume of plastic and concrete in the world is already more than the world's total biomass. To play devil's advocate for a minute, I could suggest humans are brutally efficient and growing and feeding most of the world populations, though distribution leaves a lot to be desired. The current process of sustaining our species means we are imitating the volcanoes that heated the world millions of years ago, by the volume of CO2 we are pumping out. Where do we search for hope though, do we look at humanity's own inventiveness to reverse this? For us to survive I feel we need to put planet Earth first, otherwise it will continue to evolve without us”. William agrees with Pedro's devil's advocacy, and that as a species we're brutally efficient at survival. Even something like the black death didn't kill us off, and in some ways did lead to how we live today. Stuart finds the analogy that humans and their habits are like a giant volcano, interesting. It echo's a thought he had in a previous episode where he believed that us humans are like a giant panda, an evolutionary dead end. In conclusion, your co-hosts feel we as a species are often at our best when we're pushed into action, when we're cornered. We like to give you an ad free experience. We also like our audience to be relatively small and engaged, we're not after numbers. This podcast's overall themes are nature, philosophy, climate, the human condition, sustainability, and social justice. What do you make of this discussion? Yet, for our latest guests on the Futureverse, this is all in a day's work.  The Sunday Times' Chief Foreign Correspondent Christina Lamb, who has been covering conflict around the globe for over three decades, does not regard herself as a risk taker, though. It was not an attraction to danger that led her to war reporting, but a surprise wedding invitation that landed on her desk in 1987. Similarly, as a teenager, the adventurer and broadcaster Simon Reeve, enjoyed the thrill of cycling down Acton High Street on his BMX, but did not imagine that he would spend his early professional life on the tail of neo-Nazi terrorists in Boston Spa. It is of course the adventurer, author and broadcaster, Simon Reeve. If you've watched Simon's shows, you'll know they're not your typical travel programmes. He's known for digging beneath the surface of a place, and telling the stories - both good and bad - that need to be told. What you may not know is that Simon is really very experienced when it comes to digging a little deeper as he began his career as an investigative journalist, and went on to become a NY Times best-selling author, all before he even appeared on our TV screens. Simon has undertaken numerous extraordinary journeys, but none of them are quite as extraordinary as the journey his own life has taken. I think you'll be both amazed and inspired by it. In Episode 116, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me to talk about niching down from traditional genre categories into the micro genres we love.  Over the past year, I have picked up on some key themes and types of books that I can generally count on for successful reading. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Simon Reeve is a broadcaster and writer best known for his TV documentaries which combine travel and adventure with investigations into the challenges faced by the places he visits. His journeys have taken him across jungles, deserts, mountains and oceans, and to some of the most dangerous and remote regions of the world. He's dodged bullets on frontlines, dived with seals and sharks, survived malaria, walked through minefields and tracked lions on foot. Simon grew up in Acton in west London. During his career, seasoned TV personality Simon Reeve traveled too many places around the world presenting television shows…but it was Africa, especially South Africa, that really captured his heart. From the moment he first visited Zimbabwe in the 1990's, he was captured by the smells, the air … the charms. So much so, that in the late 1990's he moved his family to Botswana and formed a production company attached to a safari operation. This obsession continues for Simon to this day. Today, I’m joined by one of travel’s most familiar faces. Known for his TV series tracing the Equator, the Tropics of Cancer & Capricorn, following the world’s sacred rivers and pilgrimages, travelling the length of the Americas, and deep diving into destinations like Burma, Russia and Colombia, visiting over 130 countries along the way. It is of course the adventurer, author and broadcaster, Simon Reeve. Now, if you’ve watched Simon’s shows, you’ll know they’re not your typical travel programmes. He’s known for digging beneath the surface of a place, and telling the stories - both good and bad - that need to be told. I think you’ll be both amazed and inspired by it. Royal Ballet soloist, and Marine Conservation Society Ocean Ambassador, Fernando Montano, has already done some amazing work for the charity and now he presents the first Oceancast. Fernando was brought up by the Pacific coast of Columbia and has always loved the ocean and like so many others he's become increasingly horrified by the ever-growing levels of pollution and especially the problem that our over-use of plastics is creating when it's dumped into our rivers and oceans. In this episode Fernando talks to adventurer, journalist, documentary maker and fellow Ambassador, Simon Reeve, about his travels and the impact he's seen first-hand of plastic on the ocean. He meets another Ocean Ambassador, Miranda Krestovnikoff, wildlife presenter on the BBC One Show and passionate diver in UK seas, and world record breaking Welsh hurdler Colin Jackson who lives beside the sea in Cardiff. Fernando also catches up with West End violinist, Jonathan Hill, who's played on a violin made out of driftwood. With Marine Conservation Society staff also dropping in for a chat, it's a soothing and inspiring listen - just like the ocean itself!

Britanski novinar in popotnik Simon Reeve že od nekdaj prepozna dobre zgodbe. V svojih popotniških oddajah in dokumentarcih že leta navdušuje s sproščenostjo, človeško toplino in iskrivo radovednostjo. Za britanski BBC je obiskal že 120 dežel; med njimi tudi take, ki jih ne najdemo na uradnih zemljevidih. Potovanja so ga popeljala čez pragozdove, puščave, gorovja in oceane. V odročnih kotičkih srečuje ljudi in posluša njihove zgodbe. Za oddajo Sobotno branje sta knjigo prebrala Tomaž Gerden in Iztok Konc.
