If you're a freelancer and you're NOT running paid ads, chances are you fall into one of two types: Type 1: Never tried paid ads because they were too intimidated, too overwhelmed, or convinced they won't work. Type 2: Tried ads and for whatever reason, they didn't work Most freelancers don't even know they're doing it wrong. Common scenario: You spent $100 on ads. Nothing happens. You shrug and say, "paid ads don't work for me." But you have no idea WHICH part didn't work. Was it your hook? Your offer? Your landing page? Your inquiry form? Your sales process? All of the above? But most freelancers won't take the time to figure out what went wrong. They just know "it didn't work." That's like saying "my car doesn't work" without knowing if it's the battery, the engine, or if you just forgot to put gas in it. If you're Type 1, this episode could save you from wasting thousands. If you're Type 2, this episode will show you exactly what went wrong. For full show notes, visit https://6figurecreative.com/398

Designed for the Creative Mind

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2026 40:00

In today's episode of Designed for the Creative Mind, I'm sitting down with Shelby Fowler Moss to talk about something that makes a lot of designers nervous: paid ads. Shelby is a paid ad strategist and sales expert who's helped businesses generate tens of millions of dollars through advertising, and she brings a refreshingly honest, no-fluff perspective to this conversation. If you've ever felt like paid ads are risky, confusing, or something only "big businesses" can afford, this episode is for you. Shelby and I break down what actually makes ads work, why so many business owners get burned by agencies, and how designers can think about ads in a smarter, more sustainable way—without gambling their money or chasing vanity metrics. We dig into what success with paid ads really looks like, why understanding the lifetime value of a client is critical before you ever spend a dollar, and how ads should be viewed as a long-term investment rather than a quick win. Shelby also shares why most agencies fail to clearly define success, how business owners can protect themselves, and what designers need to know even if they plan to outsource their ads. One of my favorite parts of this conversation is Shelby's concept of "digital billboards" for local businesses. We talk specifically about how interior designers can use simple Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram to stay top of mind in the right zip codes, instead of wasting money on traditional local advertising that often ends up in the trash. If you've ever advertised in a neighborhood magazine and wondered if anyone actually saw it, this will hit home. Shelby also walks us through her "attract, demonstrate, sell" framework and explains why showing your work, your process, and your personality builds far more trust than simply saying you're the best. We talk about creative fatigue, why video matters, and how designers can position themselves as the go-to expert in their market without needing massive budgets or complicated funnels. This episode is a must-listen if you want to understand paid ads without the hype, learn how to think like an investor instead of a gambler, and explore smarter ways to grow your visibility and client base as a creative business owner. If paid advertising has been on your radar but felt overwhelming or intimidating, Shelby brings so much clarity to what actually matters—and what doesn't.   Shelby Fowler-Moss is a paid ads strategist and sales expert who's helped her clients generate tens of millions of dollars from paid advertising. After running one of the top boutique ad agencies for 7 years, she now teaches entrepreneurs how to think like investors, using ads to build real leverage, not chaos. Her teaching style is straight-talking, high-energy, and rooted in what actually works in today's market, no fluff, no theory, just strategy that scales.   RESOURCES: Fix the Leaks: The Hidden Places Your Business Is Quietly Losing Time & Money https://www.addevent.com/event/qjrn64tbm77l   How to Price Your Design Services with Confidence https://thedesignbakehouse.com/pricing-workshop   INTERIOR DESIGN BUSINESS BAKERY - Our year-long mentorship and coaching program: https://thedesignbakehouse.com/interior-design-business-bakery   SIMPLIFY YOUR MARKETING, SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE. You know what's wild? I had three of my coaches (Richie, Dennis, and Rob) on the podcast this week to settle the organic vs. paid ads debate once and for all. Combined, they've spent tens of millions on paid ads and generated hundreds of millions in revenue for clients. And here's what they said: If you're doing organic without paid ads, you're playing marketing on hard mode. Organic takes 90-100+ videos before you hit an inflection point. Each piece takes 3+ hours. And you're competing against dopamine-engineered content designed to keep people scrolling. Meanwhile, our clients spend $5-10/day on ads and get 5+ booked calls. But the weirdest part? The #1 objection we hear from freelancers about running ads is: "I'll look desperate." Especially music producers. They think if people see them running ads, everyone will assume they're struggling for work. Which is... completely backwards. We break down why in this week's podcast episode. The discussion explores how to build a strong organic foundation that allows paid ads to amplify results, rather than highlight broken systems. From SEO and CRM setup to budgeting and mindset, this conversation offers a roadmap for sustainable growth and smarter marketing decisions.Key TakeawaysPaid ads amplify existing systems — if they're broken, ads will only make the issues more visible. An SEO-optimized website and CRM are non-negotiable for consistent lead generation and nurturing.Expecting instant results or direct lead attribution from paid ads leads to frustration and wasted budget.Think of paid ads as a trust-building tool that supports the buyer's journey across multiple touchpoints.A strong business foundation includes playbooks, sales processes, and clear metrics to guide decisions.Gym owners launching a new concept should allocate $20,000–$30,000 for pre-opening marketing. For franchises or new locations, a monthly marketing budget of $4,000–$6,000 is recommended.Strategic partnerships and mentorship programs can accelerate the process of building solid systems.Long-term success requires a 12-month mindset, consistent improvement, and leadership development.Episode Chapters00:00 Intro00:05 Paid Advertising as an Amplifier03:09 Mindset and Success Metrics09:42 Building a Strong Foundation11:23 Leveraging Resources and Strategic Partnerships19:09 Franchise and Concept Launch StrategiesCall to Action If this episode resonated, share it with a fellow gym owner who's thinking about running ads. Has your business hit a growth plateau? If so, this episode is for you. Because building a brand isn't just about good design or smart strategy–it's about finding your voice and using it to create opportunities. In this special conversation, I joined Brian Mattocks on The Hard to Market Podcast to talk about the lessons I've learned running The brandiD for more than 15 years, and why your voice is often the most powerful marketing tool you have. Your Voice Builds Your Pipeline If your growth has slowed, hiding behind the work won't turn things around. You need to put your voice out there. I share how podcasting, LinkedIn, and even simple visibility habits can attract the right people to your business, even if you're introverted. Focus Creates Momentum Trying to speak to everyone dilutes your message. When I relaunched MyPath101, narrowing the audience and leaning on partnerships made all the difference. You'll hear how choosing focus over frenzy during slow periods can create the traction your business needs. Enjoy this episode…  Soundbytes 05:23 - 05:48 “Our growth has been completely organic over these last 14-15 years, except for some partnerships and people who stumbled upon us through Google searches. But even those partnerships have been organic, meaning they just kind of came about by happenstance. I wasn't overly intentional about creating them, but we've always done really good work, and my team is exceptional at what they do.” 08:33 - 09:00 “When I launched that company, it was in 2015. Then we had three different target audiences. It was parents, the students themselves, and high school and college administrators, and we were trying to sell to all three…That wasn't the best move, because it was really difficult to speak to all three through one website.” 29:20 - 29:41 “I lean on my faith, quite honestly, more than ever when things get a little sticky. Whether it's personnel changes or a little uptick in business, I honestly pray about it. That the right people come our way.” Quotes “I'm here to help people be limitless in whatever their journey is.” “Strategy is great, but it's nothing if you don't do something with it.” “I love helping people figure out what they're here to do and then bring light to them, you know, to shine on their journey.” Links mentioned in this episode: Connect with brandiD Find out how top leaders are increasing their authority, impact, and income online.
