Tech founder with 17% vision secures €2M to launch AI tool for Digital Inclusion

An Irish entrepreneur, born with sight loss, has secured €2 million in funding to develop pioneering AI software to make the internet more accessible for people of all abilities. Prompted by the development of generative AI, the company, Nexus Inclusion, is set to launch ahead of the European Accessibility Act (EAA) coming into force on June 28th, 2025. The EU legislation requires all businesses trading in Europe to have digitally accessible websites, apps and online products. Founder and CEO Kyran O'Mahoney, an award-winning tech entrepreneur, was born with a 17 per cent vision. He knows firsthand the challenges of navigating life in a digital era. "I founded Nexus Inclusion to change the world so no one is excluded because they are different," commented founder Kyran O'Mahoney. "It is my firm belief that technology and, more importantly, the emergence of AI is the next thing to change the world for people excluded from digital products." According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are 1.3 billion people with a disability worldwide. One in four people needs assistance to access online content, yet less than four per cent* of the top one million websites globally are accessible to people with disabilities. Combining deep knowledge of accessibility, technology, and GenAI, the Nexus Inclusion tech will exceed legislative standards. Unlike accessible tools currently on the market, NexusAI offers real-time solutions for people of all abilities, empowering people with disabilities and those with social or economic restrictions to use technology independently. "If you look at the banking sector, it is still incredibly inaccessible, yet we have an inherent right to financial independence and financial freedom. Some elderly, vision-impaired or people with learning difficulties can't read their own bank statements. Nexus Inclusion's solution will help with this issue. The Nexus AI tool can summarise the key information at a reading level appropriate to the user in a format they are comfortable with. It automatically adds captions or transcripts and ensures that digital products work with assistive technologies. Every customer we onboard will make the world more digitally equal," he continued. Nexus Inclusion employs seven people and plans to build a team of 30 by the end of 2026. Roles are currently available for developers, business development and marketing. The company is positioned for significant growth in the digital accessibility market, estimated at $706 million globally, growing to approximately $958 million by 2029. With EU-wide legislation around the corner, O'Mahoney believes digital accessibility is just the first step, "We need to move beyond Digital Accessibility, which is about making accommodations for people with different abilities. As someone who has grown up with limited vision, I don't want to be accommodated. I want to be included in every aspect of life. To me, this is inclusion. At Nexus Inclusion, our objective is to bridge the digital divide so no one is excluded because they are different. We are all different!" he says. For more information, see: www.nexusinclusion.com. We know that digital technology can be transformative in helping charities achieve their goals, whether it's reaching new supporters or delivering more services. But there remain challenges around how inclusive digital technology is, with millions of people in the UK unable to get online.   This is a particular issue for the charity sector, whose purpose is reaching as many people as possible, from supporters to beneficiaries. Indeed, our report, Digital inclusion in the UK charity sector, revealed that 82% of charities are concerned about digital inclusion, with more than half finding it difficult to reach service users due to problems with digital technology. In 2024, we launched a digital inclusion campaign to help address these problems. In this podcast, we explore what we've learned about digital inclusion as part of our campaign, sharing insights from our report and from working closely with charities engaged in tackling the issue.  Join us as we discover more about charity attitudes towards digital inclusion and what they can do to prioritise it in the future.  Useful resources: Dr Emma Stone: AI shifts the goalposts of digital inclusion Digital Inclusion Hub

Listen in to explore how microentrepreneurs can be the catalyst for economic growth, the systemic shifts needed to empower them, and the emerging trends shaping their future. Social Impact Pioneers - Werner Wallner, Managing Director of the Hilti Foundation; Amalia Johnsson, CEO of Hand in Hand International; and Payal Dalal, Executive Vice President of Global Programmes at the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth join us to share their wisdom. With decades of experience in financial inclusion, entrepreneurship acceleration, and economic development, they bring invaluable insights into how small businesses can transform lives—and entire economies. Why Microbusinesses Matter Microbusinesses make up 90% of global enterprises and contribute to over 50% of global GDP. In Kenya alone, 50% of working-age adults are informal entrepreneurs living below the poverty line. Strategic investment in this sector could boost national GDP by as much as 60%. Hand in Hand's acceleration programmes—which offer advanced business training, credit access, and robust market linkages—have already increased participant incomes by 140%, often placing them among the country's top 15% of earners. But despite their enormous potential, micro-entrepreneurs remain the most underserved economic players, especially women. This episode delves into how we can change that. Delivering System-Level Change Transforming microenterprise growth isn't about isolated interventions—it requires systemic change. Our guests discuss how governments, financial institutions, and NGOs must coordinate efforts to unlock the full potential of micro-entrepreneurs. From broadening financial access to redefining women's role in entrepreneurship, this conversation underscores the urgency of moving beyond ‘entrepreneurs by necessity' and recognising them as economic powerhouses. Werner shares how financial inclusion initiatives have enabled thousands of women to build credit histories, access financing, and achieve long-term business growth. Meanwhile, Amalia highlights how tailored sectoral support for rural entrepreneurs is proving just as effective as urban interventions. Emerging Trends: AI, Cybersecurity, and Digitalisation The future of small business success hinges on emerging technologies. Payal discusses the game-changing potential of Generative AI, which is already enhancing financial coaching and unlocking new digital financing opportunities for small businesses. However, the shift to digitalisation also brings new threats—cybersecurity risks are escalating, and over 50% of small businesses that suffer a cyberattack fail financially. Our guests stress the need for proactive measures to protect entrepreneurs in the digital economy while ensuring technology remains an enabler, not a barrier. Whether you're a policymaker, an investor, an NGO leader, or simply passionate about economic empowerment, this episode is packed with actionable insights and bold strategies. Charities are tempting targets for cyber attacks, as custodians of sensitive data and funds needed to deliver critical services. But with concepts like multifactor authentication, access controls, and patch management to contend with, looking after your cyber security can seem like a daunting prospect, particularly when coupled with limited resources and technical knowledge.  However, cyber security needn't be intimidating. Many of the scariest sounding concepts can be relatively simple. With the right training and technology to help, charities can empower everyone in their organisation to look after their cyber security, from the newest volunteer to the most senior board member. In this podcast, recorded at Charity Digital's Digital Inclusion Summit in June 2024, Rick Wilhelm, Chief Technology Officer at PIR.org (the organisation that powers the .Org domain name), we explore how charities can create a fear-free means culture around cyber security, with response plans, education, and tips on how to spot potential cyber threats.  You can find the slides and video recording here, as well as more sessions from the Digital Inclusion Summit 2024.

The Foundation is on a mission to eliminate barriers to entrepreneurship for women, helping to enable global economic gender justice. Elizabeth's work within the organisation is focused on unlocking the power of digital for women's entrepreneurship. With 10 years of experience working on women's economic empowerment, economic development, and governance programmes, Elizabeth shares why digital exclusion is particularly pronounced for women – from access to mobile handsets, digital connectivity, low digital literacy and the high associated costs. Elizabeth reveals the potential of integrating digital tools in business operations for women. Whether it's mobile money and online transaction systems, that helps to provide financial autonomy; through to book-keeping and client management that enhances business efficiency. Elizabeth is passionate about working in partnership with private and public sector organisations and has delivered this in some 12 different countries. Her experience includes working with partners like Qualcomm, DHL Express, FCDO and USAID. Together we talk about some of the partnering opportunities that can better serve female entrepreneurs. Elizabeth says – “There is a lot of excitement around AI. Digital inclusion is critical to business success and, if women are digitally excluded - whether it's because of poor connectivity or infrastructure, high cost of data or lack of mobile phone ownership or access – women will never achieve their potential in business.” Please find here the links to the reports: • GSMA Mobile Gender Gap Report 2023: https://www.gsma.com/mobilefordevelopment/programme/connected-women/the-mobile-gender-gap-report-2023/ • Cherie Blair Foundation for Women Research Reports: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/research/2023-audit/ • Bridging the Divide: Women, Tech and Business Success: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/research/covid19-research/ • Cherie Blair Foundation website: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/ • Cherie Blair Programmes: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/programmes/ • Cherie Blair HerVenture: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/programmes/herventure/ • Cherie Blair Mentoring: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/programmes/mentoring/

Keep it a secret. Do not share it. Not mention it. Do not even think about it if you want. Have a chance to keep your soul and survive the eyes of the AI.The StoryIn the desolation the sky itself seemed to warp and twist, becoming a canvas for empty matrix patterns. Ethereal eyes floated high above, casting haunting glows over the town below. The watchers, always observing, always judging, and never breathing. The streets lined with twisted trees, their branches heavy with jack-o'-lanterns glowing of a light imbued with binary code. Their faces seemed to flicker and shift, revealing glimpses of the countless souls whose data had been harvested.Shadowy, emptied, citizen figures moved through the streets; parched digital egos, mere silhouettes of what was flesh and blood. Their faces, devoid of emotion, were a testament to a life under ceaseless surveillance.Amidst this world of shadows and whispers, freedom remained a dream, and when Eleanor noticed the glitches in the matrix, that dream, for many, became hope. The eyes in the sky, for all their omnipotence, had blind spots, biases, and the very human imperfect humanity that created them and the now they feasted on.But Eleanor disappeared. The only trace left of her was her shadow laying on the ground and a chilling note:"Your thoughts could be next... but do we even care?"- The EndThis short story was brought to you by what you could consider the mortal remain of a human cognition and his faithful AI companion.  Who is who, and what is what, is up to you to decide.Very quickly written and illustrated by Me and AI - mostly written by me cause AI ain't that good at #writing these things anyway. The illustration? Well that is another story, maybe for another time. The reading? Well, that is all the AI (and Halloween Version of it)  with my art direction,  because I am no actor and I do not pretend to be one.
