Contestant number 43,212 walked onto the stage to audition for Britain's Got Talent. She stood in sharp contrast to previous performers. Unkempt curly hair and a less than flattering dress suggested a frumpy housewife. Simon Cowell interviewed her briefly and her admission that she was 47 years old caused raised eyebrows and scattered laughter from the audience. Her awkward verbal responses added to the anticipation that her performance would be cut short quickly. Expectations hit rock bottom when she revealed the ambitious choice to sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables. But when contestant number 43,212 finished singing just the first phrase, “I dreamed a dream in time gone by” the audience had begun to cheer and applaud while each judge wore a look of amazement and disbelief. Her voice was beautiful and strong. She finished the song to a standing ovation, and Susan Boyle was on her way. Simon Cowell said later she was the textbook example of “never judge a book by its cover.” Sometimes God surprises us in the same way, working in ways and through people we might not expect. Simon Cowell has built an entertainment empire on his ability to say exactly what he thinks and an uncanny ability to judge the public mood. From launching Pop Idol in 2001, The X Factor in 2004 and the cultural behemoth Britain's Got Talent in 2007, he has been at the helm of primetime around the world for over a quarter of a century. His TV shows and Syco record label have shaped the careers of everyone from One Direction to Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis. But his success hasn't come without its struggles. For the first time, Cowell opens up about his biggest failures and regrets - an extraordinary thing to hear from one of the most successful men on the planet. We chat about fame, bankruptcy, loss, being ‘obnoxious' and whether he has any regrets. Plus: what breaking his back and a near-death experience taught him and why he thinks we needs another referendum on Brexit. Britain's Got Talent is currently airing on ITV, and America's Got Talent celebrates its 20th year this summer on NBC. ‘The biggest risk is being safe' - Elizabeth and Simon answer YOUR questions in our subscriber series, Failing with Friends.
In this episode, Danny Hurst sits down to chat with British comedian and author Jeff Green. He was raised in Chester and found his comedy feet in Manchester and London. He now lives and performs in Australia. Jeff worked hard and found fame; it was not unusual for him to do 5 shows a night. He once played The Rovers Return and learned his craft alongside Suzy Eddie Izzard. Danny and Jeff swap stories, including dying at the Bearcat and performing while IRA bombs were going off. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS In the 80s, Australians and New Zealanders came to the UK bought a 2nd hand camper and toured the UK. Jeff learnt how to do stand up alongside Suzy Eddie Izzard. For 20 years, Jeff did 5 gigs a night. Danny did 3 a night. Jeff won Comedy Store New Comic of the Year. For some gigs, comics had to walk through the audience to get to the stage, being heckled all the way. Comedy is in the blood in the UK, so many members of the public have a quick wit. When a comedian is funny between jokes they are usually very successful. The best comics take risks and break the mould. Many of them also don´t care and say what they want if they think it is funny. Being a comic in Australia is tough, every gig is an overnighter. The audience is calmer but easily offended. Australians like stories rather than one-liners Irish comics had it really rough during the 80s and 90s. BEST MOMENTS “I was getting standing ovations in London and being booed in Melbourne.”” “I was at Eddie´s first ever gig when he performed in a dress.” “We've got our own Susan Boyle in Dave Jones.” “You'd probably make the same money in 89 that you're that you're making in 2025.” “That's the beauty of comedy, you've got everyone in it, from top heart consultants to forklift truck drivers.” “Australian audiences are a lot softer than British audiences.” “I made a lot of mistakes in London; I clearly pissed a lot of people off.” “He said “it´s a homage Jeff”, which is a posh way of saying “I´ve stolen it” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.facebook.com/@comedianjeffgreen https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Jeff-Green/author/B0034PJJFA HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Having worked with some of the most difficult people in the UK, he is a natural storyteller and entertainer, whilst purveying the most fascinating information that you didn't know you didn't know. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Anya Jones epitomises the reason for this podcast in that she is one of the only people I know to successfully make the transition from A&R where at Syco she was instrumental in up 120 Million sales including for Little Mix, Susan Boyle and Ella Henderson to a world class songwriter currently enjoying success with Kylie, Birdy. Dylan, Benjamin Ingrosso , Tom Grennan and Rita Ora amongst others . Her emotional connection to music is one of many reasons why I've always adored her and you'll hear it so many examples of it throughout this wonderful episode. If you enjoy this episode please like/subscribe and explore earlier episodes including incredible conversations with artists and creatives including Mark Feehily, Claire Richards, William Baker, Biff Stannard, Richard X , Karen Poole and many many more. No matter how old you are, no matter what you've done or not done, it is not too late to go after your dreams or create a life you love. The biggest obstacle standing between you and your dreams is the mistaken belief that it's too late.Ava DuVernay, Julia Child, Stan Lee and Susan Boyle are just a few of the people who started building the life they desired in middle age.The inspiration for this episode is my own realization of not-too-lateness... Welcome back to the Justin Prince Show! In this profound episode, we delve into a topic that's often avoided but deeply significant: misery. Susan Boyle Again as The Drive is on Summer vacation, here is a repeat of an episode of Brew Ha Ha, originally recorded on October 6, 2022, with Susan Boyle, the official Irish Spirits Ambassador. Cheers! Susan Boyle, the Irish Spirits Ambassador is the guest of Herlinda Heras with Peter Lopez who is sitting in for Harry Duke on Brew Ha Ha today. First, Harry Duke is calling in from a roadside attraction on Route 66 in Oklahoma, on his road trip. Oklahoma City has a thriving craft beer scene, and he's “not in the land of IPAs anymore.” If he sees one or two on the board, it's a surprise. The Pilsners and Lagers are more popular there among the craft brewers. They are going from their Fall beers to their Winter beers. Ireland's Bord Bia Bord Bia is the Irish Food Board, that oversees food and drink exports from Ireland. There is a renaissance going on in Irish distilling. After the low point of the 1960s there has been a great revival. Herlinda points out that Bourbon and Whiskey start off with the wort, the same way beer does, only they don't add hops and they distill it instead of ferment. Herlinda has brought a bottle of Guinness West Indies Porter. It is a historic recipe, which came from their corporate archives. There is a lot of brewing history in those documents. They have a whiskey called Lost Irish, a blended Irish whiskey. Irish whiskey can be aged in any kind of wood, such as chestnut or acacia, besides oak. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. Susan's portfolio includes whiskeys, cream liqueurs, white spirits including gin and Irish Poitín (pronounced “potcheen”) sometimes also called Irish moonshine. Irish cream liqueur is one of three spirits whose name and origin are regulated, along with Irish whiskey and Irish Poitín. This whiskey has spent time in six different casks which impart a spectrum of flavors. It is drinkable and smooth with caramel, toffee and nuts in the flavors. "Everything tastes better with friends."
A synthethic replacement for ethanol that has all of the benefits but none of the drawbacks seems like science fiction but David Orren from GABA Labs thinks they have cracked the code.David is the MD and co-founder of GABA Labs, a potentially revolutionary start up that is aiming to produce a range of replacements for ethanol. These scientifically researched, but yet to be approved, ingredients could stimulate the same neuro-receptors in our brains as ethanol. According to David and his partner Prof. David Nutt, they could do it more accurately and they would be self limiting so over indulging would be impossible. But does the science stack up? How does it get FDA approval? And what sort of business model do you use when trying to disrupt one of humanities oldest industries? The fantastic Susan Boyle co-hosts this episode as Foxy is on a well deserved holiday.Support the showFor more high-lights and low-downs follow @BizBevPod on Twitter or LinkedInBusiness of Beverages is self-funded and hosted/ edited/produced by Will Keating.Pádraig Fox co-hosts in a strictly personal capacity. All opinions are those of the person expressing them at all times. In this episode we welcome Lloyd Bradley into our Hammersmith lair and ask him about his career as a journalist and as the acclaimed author of Bass Culture and Sounds Like London — the latter book celebrating its 10th birthday at the time of recording. We learn what London sounded like to Lloyd as a boy growing up in '60s Hornsey, and how his love for music led to writing for Blues & Soul and then NME and Q. He talks us through some of the key themes of Sounds Like London — his history of "100 years of Black music in the capital" — and particularly the homegrown reggae sub-genre known as "lover's rock" and the rise of grime as a hybrid of UK garage, hip hop, jungle and dancehall. Discussion of lover's rock leads us to clips from a 1998 audio interview with Steve Barrow, founder of dub/roots-reggae reissue label Blood and Fire — and then to how Lloyd came to write 2000's mighty Bass Culture: When Reggae was King. After a short discussion of soul legend Bettye LaVette — and her journey from early '60s Atlantic Records to the Anti- label in the mid-noughties — we pay tribute to the late Tina Turner and her epic story of survival and self-reinvention Mark quotes from highlights of his additions to the RBP library, including Richard Harrington's Washington Post review of the last gig Lowell George ever played and Tony Scherman's exhaustive Musician interview with session drummer Earl Palmer. Finally, Jasper talks us out with his remarks on pieces about Labrinth and London's hyper-eclectic jazz scene. Many thanks to special guest Lloyd Bradley. For more on Bass Culture and Sounds Like London, visit his website at lloydbradley.net. Pieces discussed: George Clinton, Beggar & Co, The Growth of Grime, Blood & Fire's Steve Barrow audio, Bettye Lavette, Bettye Lavette vs. Susan Boyle, Thankful N' Thoughtful, Ike & Tina, Tina Turner, Soulful Queen of Rock'n'roll, Tina Turner roars into Rock Hall, Lowell George, Earl Palmer, Labrinth live and London jazz.

In this episode you'll learn how a host of passionate and well informed experts battle Will's suspicion of Wine to convince him that there's innovation, excitement and, ultimately, hope for the category. Will is a self confessed "wine sceptic", frustrated by his perception of the industry's slavish devotion to tradition and glacial pace of innovation. Steve advises many of the biggest producers, exporters, importers and distributors of wine on the overall state of the category, the key trends and economic watch outs from across the globe. Who better to cast a dispassionate eye on the opportunities and challenges for the category? On our Desert Island Drink slot we welcome the bubbly Elly Owen a Sommelier and Wine educator based in beautiful Cornwall. Elly wants to bring simple and carefree wines to people everywhere but will she stick to those principles if she can only choose one drink for the island?Foxy will return, that's a threat, not a promise
Orthodox Christians who read the Holy Bible will have read Christ's words: “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” Regarding these words, the Holy Fathers clearly teach that at the Last Judgment only those who show mercy will obtain mercy. This is why the saints put great effort into fleeing from the soul-destroying passion of mercilessness by practising works of mercy. Hence, it is important for all who desire salvation to know exactly what works of mercy are.In this talk, Father Kosmas uses the writings of various saints to explain how almsgiving is not the only way to be merciful. Works of mercy can be broken up into two groups: physical and spiritual. A significant part of the talk is dedicated to providing many practical examples of works of mercy. By the end of the talk we will see that, no matter what spiritual struggles we undertake, without mercy there will be no mercy. The following questions are also discussed: why did the thief on the cross receive mercy? Why were the five foolish virgins not shown mercy? Why does God create inequality in the world? Is the desire to show mercy equal to the deed itself? Are the rich allowed to enjoy their wealth? Do Orthodox elders require Christians to tithe? Why are many supporters of Susan Boyle hypocrites?Other points covered in this talk include: how one young man gave up his ‘freedom' in order to show mercy; how ‘merciful' euthanasia is actually merciless; how the attitude ‘I don't want charity' is from the devil; how those who give alms benefit greatly not only in the afterlife but also in this life; how some of the rich begged the poor to take their money out of mercy; and the worthlessness of prayer, fasting, confession, and communion without compassion.Duration: 3hrs 42minsVisit our website: www.OrthodoxTalks.com

We've heard the underdog stories before… The 1980 US Men's Hockey Team taking Gold at the Olympics….. Susan Boyle making Simon Cowell CRY on Britain's Got Talent…. And of course, sorority girl, ELLE WOODS, defying the odds to graduate from Harvard Law in “Legally Blonde”… But over the past few weeks… This show has produced, *not just* an underdog… but, dare I say, an IMPOSSIBLE DOG. No, I'm not talking about Brooke's off-brand, Black-market Frankfurters, she brings to our company picnics… I'm referring to, our own… Alexis Fuller... She's not what you'd call a “trivia hound” … in fact, for months, she thought “Trivia” was a Probiotic Yogurt… But even an Impossible Dog has their day in the sun… so listeners everywhere are rooting for HER, in today's game of … CLOCKER SHOCKER. I'll give you each 20 seconds to answer as many questions as you can muster, if you don't know one just say pass. The winner will be Top Dog and will get their pick of the litter… choosing which host gets shocked while wearing an electric dog collar.
