Hey everyone, Matt here from Generations of the Hunt. This week, we had a special episode as Joe couldn't join us due to the arrival of his new baby. To keep things interesting, we invited Dr. Mike from the In Seezyn Podcast, who brought along a fascinating guest, Lindsey Thomas from the National Deer Association (NDA). For those who might remember, the NDA was formerly known as the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) before merging with the National Deer Alliance in 2020. Lindsey, serving as the Chief Communications Officer for the NDA, shared his insights on a groundbreaking study on buck bedding behavior conducted by Mississippi State University. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that bucks have many more bedding areas than previously thought, with some bucks using up to 87 different bedding areas! This challenges the common hunting strategy of targeting specific bedding sites. We also touched on the implications of deer management practices, particularly in Michigan. Lindsey highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced buck-to-doe ratio for a more intense and observable rutting season. He also discussed the biological and hunting impacts of skewed ratios, such as less effective rattling and grunting, fewer rubs and scrapes, and the potential for late-born fawns, which can be especially detrimental in northern climates. Lastly, we delved into the topic of doe harvest rates and how they're crucial for managing deer populations. Lindsey pointed out that Michigan has seen a decline in doe harvests, which could lead to an imbalance in the deer population. He suggested that hunters should consider venison donation programs as a way to manage doe populations while helping those in need. It was an enlightening conversation that shed light on deer behavior and management, and it's clear that there's much more to consider when it comes to hunting strategies and conservation efforts. On this episode of the Iowa Sportsman, Dan talks with the CEO of the National Deer Alliance, Nick Pinizzotto,  about Iowa House File 2458 and how it will help manage the spread of CWD in the state of Iowa. "HF 2458 authorizes the Committee on Natural Resources to "establish a wild animal disease management zone and take such actions within the zone as are necessary to protect wild animal health and conserve biological balance." Actions include: establishing special seasons, preventing the artificial movement of wild animals, wild animal carcasses, or parts thereof, and requiring disease sample collection from harvested wild animals. Additionally, a state biologist or conservation officer may "approach a private landowner or tenant to provide information regarding the wild animal disease prevention, containment, and eradication efforts underway in the area." Similarly, a state biologist or conservation officer may approach a landowner to obtain permission to collect wildlife samples from the landowner's property." - Nick PinizzottoFor all of you who think this is a doom and gloom scenario, it's not.  This is attempt to  gather more data, to learn more about where CWD is in our state, and will allow us to manage it using the necessary steps. We sat down with Dan Johnson, host of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast and founder of Sportsmen's Nation to talk about grassroots outdoors communication and chronic wasting disease. Dan is a supporter of the National Deer Alliance and is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable figures in the outdoor podcasting world. Dan is never afraid to give you his opinion on important issues, and this conversation is no exception.

Hardy Face Paint – Meet the owners of Hardy FacePaint Hello. We are Brian and Mariah Hardy, creators of HARDY FACEPAINT and avid, responsible hunters just like you. Brian had always used face masks, preferring the convenience of masks to the mess and trouble of paint. However, all of that changed the first time Brian went bowhunting in Kansas, the ultimate whitetail hunting state. As a big buck came into his line of sight, Brian drew back on his bow only to have his facemask catch on his release! There was nothing for him to do except draw down and watch as the buck of a lifetime walk away. Determined to never experience a facemask mishap like this again, Brian purchased every face paint product on the market. No matter what he tried, the paint ended up feeling greasy, messy, and itchy. Some of the products smelled like crayons. As any good bowhunter will tell you, it is imperative to be scent- free on the hunt. Mariah had never liked face masks as they would constantly ride up on her face and hindered her shooting. However, as someone with sensitive skin, she didn’t have the option of using harsh and irritating face paints. Not only that, Mariah is also a safe cosmetic advocate who lives a wholefood and organic lifestyle, so the toxic and harmful ingredients of face paint were not only impractical for her, but also in conflict with her values. Brian and Mariah became increasingly frustrated trying to find a camouflage face paint that was not only made with quality ingredients, but was also effective, safe, gentle, and easy to both apply and remove. After exhausting all of the existing options, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They left no detail unconsidered when creating HARDY FACEPAINT. They thought about what hunting face paint would ideally look, smell, and feel like. They researched ingredients, safety, and effectiveness, as well as ease of application and removal. They essentially dreamed up a hunter’s perfect face paint and engineered HARDY FACEPAINT to be exactly that. IBO – The International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) was created in 1984 by a dedicated group of bowhunters who shared the desire to ensure that bowhunting and the ideals of wildlife conservation survive, expand and flourish to be shared, enjoyed and passed on to future generations. By its charter, the International Bowhunting Organization’s purpose is “To promote, encourage, and foster the sport of bowhunting; further bowhunter education; act as a political coordinator and liaison for the protection and advancement of bowhunting; function as a clearinghouse for essential bowhunter information; and adhere to the basic ideal of the unification of bowhunters.” Soon after its inception, the IBO launched the Triple Crown of Bowhunting, consisting of three national tournaments hosted in separate states. Utilizing identical rules and classes, the Triple Crown culminates with the crowning of national champions of various age, gender, and equipment classes. The series continues to expand each year and has become the undisputed indicator of the best individual performers and equipment in the sport of 3-D archery and bowhunting. In 1989, the IBO established a series of sanctioned tournaments worldwide in which participants may qualify to compete in an annual finale to be held in a large and accommodating, destination-type venue. Presently, hundreds of local and regional bowhunting clubs host qualifying events for the opportunity to participate in 3D Archery’s largest and most prestigious event, The IBO World Championship. National Deer Alliance – NDA’s Initiative The mission of the National Deer Alliance (NDA) is to serve as the guardian of wild deer conservation (white-tailed deer, mule deer, black-tailed deer, Coues deer, and Key deer), and our hunting heritage. Formally incorporated in May 2015, the NDA is driven to assemble and unite a diverse group of stakeholders that includes hunters, managers, and the hunting industry to help create positive outcomes for deer and deer hunting. A strong board of directors that represents organizations and groups such as the Mule Deer Foundation, Quality Deer Management Association, Whitetails Unlimited, Archery Trade Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Wildlife Management Institute, Vista Outdoor, and Bass Pro Shops, leads NDA. The Need – Deer are the most commonly pursued and economically important game animal in North America. Despite the fact that 83% of the more than 14,000,000 hunters in the United States identified as deer hunters, there was no national organization geared toward protecting the interests of all deer hunters and the deer hunting industry before the formation of NDA. Amazingly, less than 1% of deer hunters belong to a national conservation organization dedicated to the protection of deer and our deer hunting heritage. This is where NDA comes in. The time has come for deer hunters, managers, and the hunting industry to organize and provide a united front to address current and emerging threats to deer hunting and our heritage.

Episode 16 - Nick Pinizotto (National Deer Alliance) and Chad Klinkenborg (Montana MDF Field Director) On this episode of Talking Mule Deer, Steve talks to National Deer Alliance CEO Nick Pinizzotto and MDF’s Montana Regional Director Chad Klinkenborg. Nick talks about what the National Deer Alliance (NDA) is and how it is working for all deer species and those that love to hunt deer across the country. He outlines a number of the key issues impacting deer including NDA’s top two priorities of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and hunter access. Regarding CWD, he talks about what hunters can do to help with CWD surveillance as well as understanding about transporting game across state lines and considerations about consuming affected deer. Klinkenborg talks about efforts in Montana after CWD was identified in the state within the last year. He talks about some of the surveillance efforts that Montana has undertaken in areas with suspected CWD and that MDF has provided funding to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to help with detection. Nick also talks about MDF’s engagement on the NDA with MDF President Miles Moretti currently serving as board chairman which has helped to ensure that NDA is an all-deer national organization.

Frankly right now the skills that we look for . . . you can be an engineer and product designer and obviously you can enter through the sales side because all these guns and bows and other things, somebody has got to sell them. You can get into the retail side and sell and go to work for Bass or Cabela’s or Corner Archery Shop, or something like that. That gets you into the industry.
