In our previous episode, our guest Kip Adams talked about the need for hunters to shoot more deer in many areas of the country, and one of the obstacles hunters face is not needing additional venison for themselves. We invited Jeremy Brown from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Ronnie Ritter from Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry to talk about their unique venison snack stick program and how the state's Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) is helping. In some areas of the country, one in four households struggle with food insecurity, which is a startling statistic. All of us can work together to harvest more deer and get donated venison into the hands of the families that need it most. This unique program in Arkansas is setting a fine example for others to follow. Most hunters might find it hard to believe that only 41% of licensed deer hunters harvest just one deer. Equally surprising is only 17% of hunters kill more than one deer. You can find these statistics and many more in the NDA 2024 Deer Report, which you can download for free. Not taking enough antlerless deer off the landscape is becoming an increasing problem in many areas of the country, so we invited Kip Adams, NDA's Chief Conservation Officer, to be a guest on the show to explain the issue. He also talks about the history of balanced herd management and NDA's role in improving deer herds since its inception as QDMA in 1988. Also in this episode, our hosts talk a little turkey hunting as another tag has been punched, this time by The Doctor, who shot his best gobbler ever on opening morning in Pennsylvania. It might be a long way until deer seasons get started, but there's still plenty of fun to be had in the great outdoors! Finally, Nick, Kip, and The Doctor talk about today's NDA Giving Day, and why they personally support the work of the National Deer Association. All gifts made to NDA as part of Giving Day will be matched up to $50,000 dollars by NDA corporate sponsor, onX. In this episode we continue our series "The Legacy of Great Hunters," Part 3 - Talking with the National Deer Association's Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams about what healthy deer herds really look like, and what we need to do to make/keep them that way - both on an individual level, and on a state level. I also dig into the data of Michigan's harvest, and get Kip's take on that on how to maybe turn some things around in my home state. This is a good one for all hunters who want to make a difference and leave things better than we found them. This episode includes: • Kip's perspective on what a healthy deer herd really looks like, and indicators to look for.• What healthy sex and age ratios actually are, and how and exactly when to measure them.• What states and individuals can do to balance the herd for age and sex ratio.• Is Education or State Regulation better at balancing a herd?• For states (like Michigan) that have an unhealthy balance of taking bucks over does, what can help turn this around.• Kip's take on the effectiveness of 1 buck tag and also Earn a Buck.• A good way YOU can estimate your local herd so you can make good harvest goals. And so much more!! Kip Adams presented live at the Upper Genesee River Branch of NDA back in September. This was a very timely discussion to remind all of us the basics of deer behavior and biology. Often times we overthink the process and need to be reminded that deer have certain needs and their behavior will become much more obvious when you focus on that biology and their needs. Enjoy this discussion and hopefully it helps you connect some dots this fall to connect with a nice whitetail! https://linktr.ee/pertnearoutdoors https://thehuntworks.com

In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we bring on Kip Adams of the National Deer Association as we look for answers to the many problems involving whitetail hunting as we know it today. With Kip's knowledge behind whitetail deer, we pick his brain and look for a better understanding of what the future of hunting will look like and how we can maintain a healthy deer herd moving forward. We talk about how too much hunter opportunity leads to bad hunting experiences whether that be too many hunters on public land, baiting deer, crossbows, etc. At the end of the day, it's a limited resource and we have to protect that while having the best experience we can as hunters. We've all experienced magical days in the woods where deer seem to be everywhere, as well as sits where you'd swear there isn't a whitetail within 10 miles. This week, the National Deer Association's Kip Adams and Mississippi State Deer Lab's Steve Demarais join Associate Editor Mark Demko to discuss how various environmental factors and weather conditions affect deer movement, as well as some of the misconceptions that hunters have about when, where and why deer travel.
There's a reason this time of year is often referred to as the Super Bowl of whitetail hunting. It's the rut and NDA's Chief Conservation Officer, Kip Adams, joins Nick and The Doctor to talk about their favorite rut-hunting strategies while also debunking the many myths surrounding the rut. While much of the whitetail world still remains a mystery, there's some great research available to deer hunting enthusiasts that can help increase your odds of punching a tag this fall. This episode is hitting at the perfect time to prep you for an exciting couple of weeks ahead. This is also an Ask NDA Anything episode and the guys answer questions about using decoys and what their favorite snack while deer hunting is. In this week's B-Team report, Nick almost does a faceplant and The Doctor reminds us why home improvement projects are often better left to professionals. One of his biggest projects is a public land forest and habitat improvement project that NDA does in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. Matt joins Nick and the Doctor to talk about this important project and how he expects this important work to grow in the coming years. He also talks about his long tenure with the organization and shares what he's most proud of as well as some of his favorite moments. This is also an “Ask NDA Anything” episode, and we asked Kip Adams, NDA's Chief Conservation Officer, to answer a great question we received about does and fawns. We also announce our latest sweepstakes where the grand prize is a Banks Stump 2 blind and a Weatherby Vanguard 6.5 Creedmoor rifle. Ashley and Aaron talk with Kip Adams about how hunting traditions can impact chronic wasting disease. Kip is the Chief Conservation Officer for the National Deer Association and very well-versed in both the science and culture of deer hunting. He lends a unique and optimistic perspective on what sportswomen and men can do to in their backyards and at a state level to slow the spread. Links: Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Resource Center - A comprehensive guide from NDA (deerassociation.com) https://www.deerassociation.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/CWD-BMPs-Revised-2022.pdf Show notes: 2:54 – Introduction of Kip Adams. 3:50 - The short and sweet of the National Deer Association, “The Guardians of the Deer” who are they and what do they do? 5:18 - It's important to serve both sides of the coin, both hunters and deer. 6:23 - Kips professional opinion regarding CWD. “The biggest thing impacting the future of deer herds right now.” 7:54 - Words of wisdom for folks who hunt and live in states who have yet to test positive. “Do everything possible to keep it out.” 9:03 - What are the most important steps we can take to stop the spread of CWD? 10:43 – NDA's specific approach in the fight against the spread of CWD. 12:47 - If only 4% of the population purchases a hunting license, how do we activate the other 96%? 15:50 - Bringing the hunter knowledge of the landscape to other conservation issues. 17:32 - The cost of testing, staff time to collect samples, outreach, etc. is a hidden cost that we don't talk about a lot. It costs an average of $250,000 bill when they discover CWD in a state! 19:28 - How to inform hunters tactfully as to how they might want to change their behaviors in order to stop the spread. Changing our routine is hard but we have to do it in order to stop the spread of CWD. 23:02 - Deer hunting has changed a lot over the past two hundred years. There's room for new traditions to be made, it's not impossible to change. 25:14 - What should we be doing regarding traditions such as feed stations, salt licks and other forms of baiting deer. 27:50 - Should we have a widespread ban on feeding and other forms of baiting deer? 30:02 - Reflecting on the concept that we should be all hands on deck in fighting to prevent the spread. Finding balance with sporting traditions and age structures when it comes to older bucks. “Older bucks are twice as likely to have CWD.” 38:56 - Targeted removals and how various hunters might process this concept depending on their background and experience regarding CWD. 41:53 - NDA's thoughts on captive cervids and interstate travel of cervids. “We should stop all movement of live animals.” 44:37 - What are the road blocks to making this happen. 47:10 - What can average Joe/Jane do regarding CWD? 48:48 - What is the single biggest thing that NDA has done to prevent CWD? 50:58 - What's the one thing that should have been done different and what can we learn from this. 52:17 - There are a lot of resources out there where you can learn more about CWD. Be sure to educate yourself and get engaged. Kip is a firm believer that we are going to beat this.
On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch has a conversation with Kip Adams. Kip is a biologist and the Chief Conservation Officer for the National Deer Association (NDA). Prior to Kip's engagement with the Quality Deer Management Association and NDA, he was the deer project leader for New Hampshire Fish & Game Department. New Hampshire, as well as many other states in the northern portion of the whitetail deer's home range, is not immune to severe winter weather having an impact on the local herd. Kip was involved in numerous surveys in New Hampshire monitoring winter areas as well as mortality. In addition to the wealth of knowledge regarding whitetail biology, Kip is a Pennsylvania native who finds himself hunting property he manages in northern Pennsylvania. He can relate to the weather patterns in the Keystone state and how they may impact winter survival. Kip explains that providing winter food for deer is not a reactionary process – it takes planning ahead to manage plant communities accessible to the deer herd this time of year. However, as many landowners begin to hit the panic button during these harsh conditions, they will find themselves making the mistake of piling food. Commonly, corn piles and hay bales get places near wintering yards, and while this is intended to be a positive deed, it can result in disease, predation, and higher rates of mortality. Take notes, as this episode will have us back in the biology classroom!
