When you talk to the most successful deer hunters, most agree that controlling human odor is the primary factor determining success. Simply put, you can do everything else right but if you are lackadaisical with scent control you are dramatically hurting your odds. In this episode, Sam Burgeson, President of Wildlife Research Center, joins us to talk scent control and how his company has approached helping hunters in that aspect of their hunting over the years. He shares what he believes are the minimum steps necessary to improve your odds, but cautions there is no 100% bulletproof solution. He also talks about the use of attractant scents, and how the Responsible Hunting Scent Association is helping to improve safety of urine-based products to lessen the likelihood of disease spread. In this episode of the Deer IQ podcast we will continue to look at how to achieve our goal, or theme of this year “to consistently take the top deer where you hunt” and exact habits and systems needed to do that - two of those being scent and sound control. I'm joined by my friend Mark for this conversation on a couple foundational systems to help with that task. Here are the top things to look for during this episode.• What is our defined difference between going with your gut vs. a strategic hunt, and why in my opinion does that matter so much if you want more consistent success?• What are the details of a scent control regimen that actually works, and what is the key way you have to implement it to be effective?• What did I learn about hunter sounds at the University of Toledo test facility, and how does this translate into a practical hunting application? It's all in this episode of the Deer IQ podcast - listen, subscribe, share! Return Guest - John Eberhart joins us for part 3 of our series - the systems of great deer hunters, looking at what specific systems the best deer hunters use (that most don't) that give them an advantage on mature whitetails. In this episode John and Adam discuss his specific systems that have pioneered the way for him, and many hunters who he's taught, to gain success where others struggle. In this episode we discuss:• What is John's TOP hunting system, and why? • Specifics about using this system and the science behind it. • Why John thinks many hunters disregard using this system (and you shouldn't!) • John's rattling system - when and where to use it, timing of using it, and sparring vs. rattling for better success. • John's specific system for selecting stand locations involving scrapes. • When John uses Ozone and when he says NOT to, particularly on pressured deer. As the rut wraps up in Iowa, the crew give their thoughts on the transition from peak rut to post rut. Stories are shared about psycho fawns in the timbers and how easy they can mess up a hunt. As the guys normally do, they got a little off topic and discuss why most hunters are probably overthinking leaving scent behind in the timber.
How important is scent control for deer hunters? Do you use deer scents to improve your chances of taking that trophy buck? Which scents work best and how do I use them afield? These and other topics of the deer scent world are discussed in detail this week on Christian Outdoors podcast with our guest, Matt Wade of Code Blue Scents. Matt gives us insider information on how to best use the Code Blue Scents to increase your odds of attracting deer to your area. And we also cover how and when to use scent elimination products. www.codebluescents.com
When you ask most hunters who have successfully gotten close to mature deer what their number one priority is when heading to the woods, they'll tell you scent control and hunting in the right wind conditions. You could be hunting the best spot in the country with mature bucks everywhere, but if you don't control your scent, it won't matter. A whitetail's nose is its number one line of defense so if you're serious about consistently achieving positive results, managing scent control should be your highest priority. To help deliver that point, Jake Ehlinger of Habitat Solutions 360 joins Nick and The Doctor to talk about his extreme scent control routine and how it can be modified to fit your personal hunting situation. Jake is a well-known successful mature buck hunter who brings a wealth of expertise in many areas ranging from hunting whitetails to managing their habitat. As we head into hunting seasons across the country, this is the perfect time to hear this conversation. We have all been hunting in the woods and heard the sound of a doe throwing a fit, blowing her head off, and stomping her feet. It is one of the most annoying sounds to a hunter. She has caught your wind and you got busted big time. Your buddies back at breakfast may tell you that you needed better scent control. You tell them, your clothes were scent free, you sprayed before you walked in the woods, and you had an ozone distributor, and she still winded you. As hunters there are countless times that many have experienced this same outcome. So we wanted to debate one of the biggest topics in the hunting world, the effectiveness of scent control. We sat down with three different opinions and 1 CIA study to see just how much scent control can actually play a factor in the woods. We want to here from you guys, does scent control matter in the woods? Study Link: https://www.cia.gov/static/6e7d5b61074cbce8462cd16b73028006/Human-Scent-and-Detection.pdf

Regardless of whether or not you have the best gear on the market and are hunting the best properties and the best spots, none of that will matter if you're not adequately controlling human odors. In fact, most hunters who consistently tag mature bucks will tell you that their number one tactic is hunting with the wind in their face while taking care to hide their presence by limiting human scent. Sam Burgeson is the president of Wildlife Research Center, the most well-known hunting scent and human scent control products company in the country and he joins Nick and The Doctor to discuss the importance of scent control in the deer woods. The guys also talk about their favorite techniques for fooling a deer's sense of smell. In addition, Sam shares stories from the origin of Wildlife Research Center, a company that truly started in his father's garage with nothing but a few ideas from his dad and uncle. In this week's B-Team report, The Doctor shares the story of how he “lost” his trail camera and Nick explains why his brand-new Redneck Ghillie Blind has a hole in it already. This might be the best B-Team story yet! Remember to please send us your hunting photos as well as your B-Team stories and Ask NDA Anything questions. The next show will be an Ask NDA Anything episode so your questions are due now. You can send them to nick@deerassociation.com. In this episode we get Russell, the inventor of Scent Thief on the phone. We talk all about scent control, how Scent Thief came to be and the best way to use it with success. During development, Russell came to realize you can't effectively eliminate odor so he created a product that completely inhibits the ability to smell. Scent Thief doesn't try to overwhelm your senses with a strong cover scent, it actually temporarily relaxes the olfactory epithelium. If you're looking to level up your scent control, you're going to want to listen to this!
