It will take years to untangle the many ways in which the pandemic affected life in Baltimore. From employment opportunities and educational choices to decisions about whether to buy a house or have a baby-- the only way to understand COVID's consequences is to look at the data. We speak with Amanda Phillips de Lucas, who directs the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, part of the University of Baltimore's Jacob France Institute. Each year, BNIA publishes its Vital Signs report, which brings together more than 100 indicators - like household size or unemployment rate - to create a snapshot of the quality of life in Baltimore's neighborhoods. The Vital Signs reports are retrospective; this year's report looks at the health of Baltimore communities in 2022. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Amanda Phillips, the director and creator of BeWell, a company dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autoimmune diseases through thoughtfully designed apparel and products. As you'll hear, Amanda's story began with her struggle to manage Crohn's disease during long car rides, leading her to devise a makeshift emergency toilet using an ice cream bucket. This experience sparked her creativity and led to the development of the IV hoodie, designed to provide warmth and easy access for infusion treatments. In our conversation, we also touch on the challenges of starting and running a business, especially in the niche market of adaptive clothing.Amanda's commitment to the community is evident in her approach to product development, actively seeking feedback through a VIP Facebook group to ensure that the products meet the needs of her customers. She also highlighted upcoming products and the introduction of a patent-pending design aimed at providing even more versatility for medical access. This episode not only sheds light on the unique challenges faced by those with autoimmune diseases but also highlights how innovation and entrepreneurship can lead to practical solutions that enhance daily living. Amanda's story is a testament to the power of personal experience in driving change and creating products that offer comfort, dignity, and functionality to those who need them most.DISCLAIMERThe information in this podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Today on Midday, Jayne Miller, the former WBAL reporter and now an independent investigative journalist, begins a three-day stint here guest hosting for Tom Hall. The latest US Census data show Baltimore City continues to lose population. The total number of city residents is 569,930, according to the latest count — a staggering 40% decline since the 1950's. But inside those numbers are trends, stories and indicators that can help us better understand the profound changes happening in the city, and the region. Jayne's guest today is Dr. Amanda Phillips de Lucas, the new director of the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance — Jacob France Institute. Each year, BNIA-JFI issues Baltimore's Vital Signs report, which tracks more than 150 indicators to take the pulse of neighborhood health and vitality. The non-profit organization is housed at the University of Baltimore and for many years was led by Seema Iyer, who spearheaded BNIA's efforts to bring data science to bear on improving neighborhood governance in Baltimore. Last month, Dr. de Lucas was selected to take charge of the alliance's crucial mission of gathering and analyzing data to better understand the needs of the city's diverse communities. Another great ep, if I do say so myself! I got the opportunity to sit down with my friend Amanda Phillips and talk about the power of intercession. Please listen and be blessed. Isaiah 49:2-4 (ESV) He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God.” *The name and author of the book Amanda mentions is "Life of the Beloved" by Henri Nouwen.

Textiles were the second-most-traded commodity in world history, preceded only by grain. In the Ottoman Empire, in particular, the sale and exchange of silks, cottons, and woolens generated an immense amount of revenue. They touched every level of society, from rural women tending silkworms to pashas flaunting layers of watered camlet to merchants travelling to Mecca and beyond. Sea Change: Ottoman Textiles Between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean (U California Press, 2021) offers the first comprehensive history of the Ottoman textile sector, arguing that the trade's enduring success resulted from its openness to expertise and objects from far-flung locations. Amanda Phillips skillfully marries art history with social and economic history, integrating formal analysis of various textiles into wider discussions of how trade, technology, and migration impacted the production and consumption of textiles in the Mediterranean from around 1400 to 1800. Surveying a vast network of textile topographies that stretched from India to Italy and from Egypt to Iran, Sea Change illuminates often neglected aspects of material culture, showcasing the objects' ability to tell new kinds of stories. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and one IU Health patient hopes sharing her own story will help others. Amanda Phillips noticed herself withdrawing from facets of her life and feeling high levels of anxiety after welcoming her identical twins in 2021. Her OB connected her with the perinatal mood disorders support group, facilitated by an IU Health team member. Amanda says this group of other moms allowed her to feel validated and supported. "That first group meeting I just remember sitting in my car in tears because I knew I had found a release," Amanda said. "I had found people that got it." She says she feels she has made a lot of progress over the last year thanks in, large part, to the support group. She still participates in the group.
In our final interview episode of the season we're hearing from Amanda Phillips. She's currently in New York leaning into a dream that she's had for quite a while. Amanda is a speaker, writer, and mental health advocate. She's been through it and is using her voice to let other people know they're not alone, that there is good stuff ahead, and that they've got to keep going. Isn't it interesting that much of the time the messages we want to tell others are often the messages we so badly wish to share with our younger selves? Find Life with Room on social media HERE! The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Sarah Jo Peterson, PhD, Dr. Tierra Billls, and Dr. Amanda Phillips de Lucas. An independent transportation consultant and author, Peterson explores the history of and development of the U.S. highway system. Peterson wrote the books The Transportation Research Board and Planning the Home Front. We'll discuss her more recent project which is a series of reports which examine the deliberate way Whites have used U.S. highways to obliterate areas where black people are allowed to live, work, and attempt to operate businesses. Dr. Bliss and Dr. de Lucas also wrote on this topic, addressing road construction and Racism in Minnesota and Maryland respectively. Dr. Bliss describes how this trauma is personal to her family, where members were displaced with the construction of highways in Michigan. Hi everyone, it’s wonderful to be back in your ears again. A huge Happy New year to you all, may this new decade bring joy and love and abundance to us all.First I’d like to say thank you to our Patreon subscribers. As it’s a new year I want to shout out to all of you. So a big thank you to Amanda Phillips, Amy Lopez, Belinda Daws, Elisa Mansfield, Kathryn O’Bree, Liz Ehrich, Peter Papp, Rachel Beddingfield and Signe of Horses. You all mean the world to me and I am so grateful that you are on this ride with me literally. Please remember our small business patrons. Belinda Daws is an incredible Connection Training Coach who is calm, confident and incredibly skilled, Belinda can help you with training your horse just like she has helped me with mine. I can highly recommend her beautiful coaching work.A huge shout out to our other small business patron Peter Papp from Peter and the Herd. Peter has just had to evacuate his beautiful herd due to bushfires where he is living. His community came together to help out and it was so beautiful to watch as they all worked to get his horses to safety well before the fires got close.Peter does with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. I had a reading myself with Peter and I found him to be completely spot on with his insights. It’s a great way to support him through these bushfires and trying times is to support his business. You can find the links to both Belinda and Peter in the show notes. You may remember from the last episode my life is in a bit of turmoil at the moment. At the end of last year I separated from my partner and Oliver and I are staying with my sister down in the Riverina in NSW for now until we can get some finances together to get back to Qld and start a new life. I’ve learned an enormous amount in the last few months about other people not behaving in the way you do. I thought we could separate and have an adult conversation and divide assets and work to both thrive and move on through a difficult time. I was very very wrong. Even though I am going through a steep learning curve, Oliver and I are very safe, safe from harm and safe from the fires raging in Australia at the moment. We drove about 1500km from Qld down to the Riverina along the coast and I saw the devastation from the fires first hand. The fires had crossed highways and burned so much land, it was black for about 30km with small patches of green where they had worked so hard and saved houses in the middle of these catastrophic fires. We were nowhere near the fires as we travelled but the smoke was everywhere. There were no days travelling when I did not wake to be reminded of the destruction happening to people, animals and especially the native animals that were unable to flee.In Australia now people have just got into action to help horse owners get the supplies they so desperately need. If you are in Australia please check with your local Vet, produce store or Horseland, these are a few who are taking donations for horse people and shipping them to those in need.I have also set up a gofundme page for Horse Owners Affected by Australian Bushfires. I will put the link in the show notes. https://www.gofundme.com/f/horse-owners-affected-by-australian-bushfires?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheetKnow that every dollar you give will go directly to horse owners in need. As we reach our goal of $5,000 I will get the funds to where it is needed and it will be completely transparent. Then we can set about raising our next $5,000 and so on until we have done all that we can for horse owners who have been through this devastation. I would be donating profits of my own business to the cause but I’ve had to shut the business down as I’m so far away and unable to run it at this time. So if you have been to the site and wondering why everything says out of stock, it’s simply that I am not able to function it at this time. But know that I will be back, and this is going to be an amazing year for us all. A new year, a new decade, although things are difficult for so many, I still feel that we will come together and make it amazing. In all that has happened so far this year to me and those in the bush fires here in Australia. I wanted to start this years podcast with a truly inspirational story. Now I know that, like me, your blood may very well boil at how this horse went blind. However, what I have learned in the past few months of what I have been through personally is that you can’t live your life looking backwards into the past and expecting change, anger at the past gets you absolutely nowhere. It keeps you locked into the past and unable to see into and manifest the future that your heart truly desires. So take a few deep breaths through that part then allow your heart and mind to be opened by the amazing story of Ashlyn Dyer and her beautiful horse Wintara Cadence or as she calls her Cady. Cady is a blind horse who Ashlyn now takes out to dressage shows. It is such a beautiful and inspirational story and I hope you get as much out of this story as I did. Link to Ashlyn's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Wintara-Cadence-Cady-1537936826339698/Belinda Daws’ website is journeyequine.com and you can find her on all the usual social Facebook, Instagram and twitter. You can find Peter Papp from Peter and the Herd through his Facebook page Peter and the herd or his Instagram by the same name.

As we officially transition to fall, we're relfecting on the summer writing residency season. We will discuss the value of writing residencies, and what it means to establish spaces and places dedicated to artistic creation and collaboration. We will hear from special guest Amanda Phillips, the site director at Woodlawn Pope-Leighey Estate, where we host summer writing residents annually. We'll also get insights from former residents about how such programs impact their creative lives.
Episode 28: Examining the work of Amanda Phillips in Shooting to Kill: Headshots, Twitch Reflexes, and the Mechropolitics of Video Games, the valorization of the headshot from multiplayer lobbies to the esports stage, and the media propaganda that rationalizes police brutality with the narrative of split-second decision making. How does our interpretation of game mechanics color our attitude towards police violence? And with corporate greed allowing hate groups to flourish, how should the gaming community combat its most dangerous groups that celebrate police and white nationalist violence? We also look to the future, asking if motion controls and VR tech make shooters inherently more unsettling, and whether or not we'll all be uploaded to the cloud one day. Discussed: Rationalizing Brutality: The Cultural Legacy of the Headshot (Jacob Geller - YouTube) Keep up with the show and send us your questions on Twitter! Amanda, a counselor and mental illness advocate, struggled with grief and suicidal ideations. She was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and thought maybe her struggles were over. Yet, she continued to face numbness and found any passion she once had was gone. Eventually, she was diagnosed with Bipolar Type 2 (also known as hypomania); the more accurate diagnosis, medication, and counseling finally began to give her some relief. Amanda encourages anyone struggling with mental illness or other hard life moments to be honest with people and allow them to help. "It's okay to struggle," she says. Amanda's Answers To The Fun Questions: • What are you loving right now? Diet Coke and blasting live folk music (especially the Avett Brothers) • What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Chicken burrito, no pico, all rice on the side • What are you doing to take care of yourself? Slowing down: less work, more music. • What are you doing to be brave? How can digital media transform the way we organize, teach, and relate to our bodies and the world? In episode 24 of the Imagine Otherwise podcast, host Cathy Hannabach chats with guest Amanda Phillips about the politics of video game realism in an era of increasingly visible police violence, why so many marginalized communities have turned to digital media for organizing, how hashtag syllabi have transformed what it means to teach about current events, and how teachers and students can together use the classroom as a space in which we teach each other how to imagine and create the kind of worlds we want. Amanda Phillips Chapman is back to record an episode we attempted and failed at last October, about that witchy '90s classic, The Craft.
The Road Back to You: Looking at Life Through the Lens of the Enneagram
Over the past weeks on The Road Back To You podcast, we have discovered how the Enneagram can be a helpful tool in understanding ourselves and others. But what happens when a married couple is the same Enneagram number? Especially when that Number is Enneagram 1 (The Perfectionist)? Join Ian and Suzanne as they interview Christopher and Amanda Phillips, parents of two young children. Hear how they... Navigate their different areas of focus Live and die by their lists and calendars Deal with expressing their anger Cope with the "out of control" aspects of parenting Learn how to relax when it's time to take a break If you struggle with resentment because you feel like you have to take the responsibility to fix everything, If you are always struggling with perfection, but you feel it never arrives, And, if you constantly hear voices that tell you that you could have done better, Then sit back and listen to how this remarkable couple is learning to navigate the waters of The Perfectionist to a safe harbor of self-love and acceptance.

Amanda Philips Chapman is back to talk about Labyrinth. In which we remember David Bowie, admire Jennifer Connelly's eyebrows, and disagree about Hoggle. Also Amanda uses her scholarly powers to explain the historical connection between mirrors and masquerades.
Lit scholar Amanda Phillips Chapman returns for a conversation about Cruel Intentions. Just how queer was that kiss, anyway? All about that, plus the Dangerous Liaisons connection, Selma Blair's comedic genius, and the regional semiotics of Reese Witherspoon.
Amanda Phillips Chapman, literary scholar and academic, is here to discuss Gilmore Girls, a cult TV drama that's had a recent resurgence thanks to Netflix. In short: Melissa McCarthy is adorable, Stars Hollow is basically Twin Peaks, Christopher's the worst, Paris is the best, and Madeline and Louise are totally queer.

On today's episode of Daytime Confidential Luke and Jamey are offering up a sneak peek at their upcoming spinoff podcast, Pop Confidential! Check out their exclusive podcast interview with Justin Gaston and Kara Killmer, two of the stars of one of the hottest shows on Hulu, If I Can Dream, from American Idol creator Simon Fuller. If I Can Dream is an interactive, 24-hour-a-day, docusoap following the lives of a group of aspiring singers, models and actors, all living together in a SoCal "Dream House". Did we mention the Dream House is equipped with 60 AXIS cameras, which follow the casts every move? This fact caused the Dream House to turn into a nightmare for one of the show's leads. On May 8, former NFL cheerleader and Playboy bunny, Amanda Phillips left the Dream House after declaring she could no longer deal with the show infringing on her personal life. We get reactions from Justin and Kara about how it felt to see their friend move out. The pair also dishes about what it's like to now be living with former American Idol contestant Alex Lambert, who recently moved into the house, adding a much needed bad boy to the mix! We also hear Justin react to gossip blogger Perez Hilton (who recently visited the house) saying he believes the public perceives the Pineville, Louisiana native and celeb blog staple as being merely the ex-boyfriend of MileyCyrus, who likes to take his clothes off and isn't very "bright". You'll wanna tune in to hear the former Nashville Star contestant address those claims and reveal how he's working to change people's misconceptions of him by focusing everything he has on his singing career. Gaston and Killmer also weigh in on how a pair of good, Christian kids from the South (Killmer is from Crowley, Texas, just a hop, skip and a jump from Jamey's hometown) manage to stay grounded in L.A., a town where sex, seduction and commercialism rule the day. After you listen to the podcast, head on over to Hulu to watch this week's 30-minute installment of If I Can Dream, with special guest star Perez Hilton. To watch the talented, sexy inhabitants of the Dream House day or night, visit If I Can Dream's official website.
