Send us a textThe saloon doors swing open on a sweltering evening in Dodge City as Cimarron George seeks refuge from the oppressive prairie heat. What begins as a simple quest for companionship quickly draws him into the electric atmosphere of the Long Branch Saloon – a microcosm of frontier tension where personal vendettas, political ambition, and business rivalries converge under the watchful glass eyes of a massive mounted moose head.George finds himself privy to whispered conversations about the dangerous feud brewing between Jim Masterson and AJ Peacock, co-owners of the Lady Gay Saloon. The conflict centers around Peacock's brother-in-law Al Updegraff, accused of theft and drunkenness, with rumors swirling that legendary lawman Bat Masterson might soon return from Tombstone to defend his brother's honor. These tensions crystallize when Mayor Webster makes his unforgettable entrance – breaking his cane over a man's head merely for offering congratulations after supposedly spreading rumors during the election. The evening introduces us to a cast of frontier characters that embody the West's contradictions: Tom Nixon, the legendary buffalo hunter who reportedly killed 120 buffalo in 40 minutes, now serving as assistant marshal; Pat Sughrue, the jovial Irishman newly elected to city council; and Marshal Singer, whose casual approach to peacekeeping belies the violence simmering beneath Dodge City's surface. As Webster warns of trouble on tomorrow's horizon and orders deputies to watch the train station, the Beeson Band strikes up a patriotic tune that momentarily unites the diverse saloon patrons – a fleeting harmony in a town poised on the edge of conflict.Saddle up with us for more frontier adventures by checking out the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum's five-minute podcast "This Week in the West," premiering every Monday. Our show is a space for riders and horse owners of all disciplines to learn best practices and to discover skills, strategies, tools, ideas, and insights for better connecting with their horses, with all horses, and for getting work done. We love to hear from listeners and contacting us is easy here.  We offer these shows for free. If you think it's worthy of a small contribution, we sure would appreciate it. This is our final episode of the show. Since the middle of the pandemic, when Jec Ballou reached out and asked if I'd like to collaborate, we have produced over 120 episodes. It's been a fun journey, full of interesting presenters, a diverse array of specialists and generalists. Since Jec and I come from different horse places, which is to say, different disciplines and philosophies and approaches, the collaboration has been fruitful for producing short, open-minded segments of education and points of view. Thank you, dear listeners, for supporting us and being in touch. Thanks so much to our title sponsor, Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds, extremely handy and healthy bales of alfalfa, timothy, and grass blends. Lucerne has been a title sponsor since our inception and we are so grateful for their commitment to the show. In this episode with reknowned equine body worker Jim Masterson, I got to know the origin story behind the Masterson Method and ask Jim about his perspective on a wide range of important topics including consent, pain and environment for our horses.  One of my favourite take-aways from our conversation is the simple yet profound power of observation. Jim is skilled in mindful observation when it comes to attuning to horses and helping them release tension, and this is a skill that anyone can learn. We chatted about how, over time, this visual awareness begins to translate into a felt sense and improved palpatory skills, and how ultimately working on our horses' physical bodies becomes a relationship and trust building activity.  If you've yet to try Jim's cornerstone technique, the Bladder Meridian, head over to YouTube or The Masterson Method website to learn how, and be sure to let us know how your horse responds!  Jim Masterson is the founder of The Masterson Method – a breakthrough form of equine bodywork which helps enhance performance, suppleness, mobility, and comfort whilst developing the relationship and bond of trust between the horse and owner. He began his career in 2000, working on horses competing in U.S. Show Jumping events, before going on to become the Equine Bodywork Therapist for the USEF Endurance Team from 2006, through 2014. Since then, Jim's worked on thousands of equine athletes, competing in events such as the FEI World Cup, Pan American and World Equestrian Games competitions. He's the author of Beyond Horse Massage and Dressage Movements Revealed, and last year he paired up with Dr. Robin Robinett, DVM to release a new book, Beyond Dog Massage which applies the same intuitive and hands-on approach to help relieve soreness and achieve connection. Since 2006, over 10,000 people have attended Masterson Method Weekend Courses, and Jim and his instructors have trained over 500 Certified Practitioners in 20 countries. Jim's vision is to have every horse on the planet experience the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once, and to empower owners, carers, competitors or professionals with the means to deeply connect with their horse or dog.

This is Episode 10 of Season 4 and in it, Jec holds a Coaches' Corner with our frequent and friendly guest, Amy Skinner. The two horsewomen discuss body work and as well as other services that can be hired and provided to your horses.  What do you think? We've had Jim Masterson, founder of the Masterson Method, present at the Best Horse Practices Summit twice. The evidence is certainly strong for this kind of body work helping horses. And Jim is a wonderful, generous presenter who has put hands on thousands of horses and mentored scores of Masterson Method providers. BHPS 2022 presentation. BHPS 2021 Presentation.  But Jec and Amy are on to something when they talk about the possible red flags or, say, caution flags, when it comes to body work, chiropractic work, acupunture, as well as supplements, and other extra-care type elements of horse ownership. Are they worth it? Is there another reason you might be subscribing to it? I was listening to a podcast about self-care. Actually, it was about the industry of self-care, of all the stuff you can buy to care for yourself, of music to listen to, of essential oils to smell, of chairs and sunglasses, and, well, stuff! When really, though, self-care isn't about stuff at all.  Thanks to our title sponsor, Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds, extremely handy and healthy bales of alfalfa, timothy, and grass blends. A great addition or substitute for your hay or grass and way better than grain.  Check them out at lucernefarms.com. Also, thanks to Skratch Labs, makers of hydration drinks and snacks for athletes. I especially like their chocolate milk, which is great after a hard, long ride. Yes, heat it up and make hot cocoa, by all means. Check them out at skratch labs com Use besthorse25 for 25 percent off your order.  Dr. Sherry King, in an article for Best Horse Practices, wrote that horses may not want or need the stuff Amy and Jec mentioned. She said: When we misinterpret our relationship with our horse, when we move beyond the role of caring steward to treating the horse like an extension of ourselves and our family, we err to the detriment of the horse. We end up loving it badly. The next time you catch yourself doing “something special” for your horse, stop. Think. Are you really doing this for your horse, or are you doing it for you? If it is really for you, is it also good for the horse? Beware false prophets of equine welfare – what they preach may actually be bad for horse's health. This is not a clarion call to stop all the extra stuff you're doing for your horses. But maybe cast a critical eye on it? Oh, I mentioned the podcast on self-care: The two women kind of dissected the self-care industry as appealing to our consumerist nature, that if we can just buy something that someone assures us is comforting and soothing, then we will be comforted and soothed. But, they pointed out, the ultimate comfort comes from turning inward not outward. It is doing the things that don't cost anything but time and effort. Like maybe meditation or really thinking about life priorities and then consciously shifting your days to better represent what you want and what you need. Like maybe riding more or giving your horses' more exercise since we know that's almost always of great benefit to the horses. We thank Sampson Moss and his business, Prairie Wind Hat Works for the generous sponsorship. Sampson makes custom hats from his place in Pincher Creek, Alberta. You can order one today and have it by the holidays.  Thanks to Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – for generously sponsoring our podcast. Check out Pharm Aloe's aloe pellets which you can simply sprinkle on your horse's feed and Redmond's Rock on a Rope which you can simply hang on a fence. We think you'll love ‘em. Also thanks to Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. Patagonia just came out with a hemp tool bag that is awesome for tack and barn stuff, from hoof picks to brushes, sprays, and hobbles. It is reversable so the many pockets can live on the inside or outside. The hemp was grown in the US and the bag was sewn in the US. AND...we are giving away two of them! Give us feedback, suggest a topic or guest, or make a donation and you'll be automatically entered to win one of two free Patagonia WorkWear items that we give away every month. Don't forget that Redmond Equine is sending a complimentary syringe of Daily Gold Stress Relief to everyone who drops a tip in our donation jar. Pretty cool and a $15 value. Interview with Jim Masterson.I am always very grateful, when someone agrees to take time out of their busy schedule and agrees to do an interview with me and especially with someone they have never met or even know.I'm particularly pleased to have the chance to chat with Jim because a dear close friend of mine is a Masterson Method Coach and I've had the honour of watching her work and see the difference she makes to the horses she visits.I'm very grateful that Jim agreed to do an interview with me.Not only is he a very knowledgeable person, he happens to be very funny too!I loved spending a few hours chatting with him about his passion, his work.So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this episode, just as much as I did making it and hear a little from the man behind the method.   Jim's Story:In 1998, while Jim was grooming horses on the U.S. hunter-jumper show circuit, he noticed while watching physical therapists work on horses that the horse exhibited certain subtle changes in behavior that correlated to what the therapists were doing. He learned that if you trust and follow what the horse is telling you as you work on it, the horse's body will participate in the process of releasing tension. The result is not only an improvement in performance, but also in the trust that develops between the horse and human.Jim and his team of instructors continue to travel the world teaching horse owners, trainers and therapists The Masterson Method.

Jim Masterson is known as the founder of the Masterson Method. As a Horse-Massage-Therapist he spent some years with the US National team on tour. During this time he learned a lot about the neurological reactions horses have shown to certain touches. He also figured out that horses begin to relieve tension on their own if we humans interpret their reactions correctly and follow them. He was one of the first to develop an animal-centric approach instead of just using a human-centric method. As many people want to learn his method, he began to travel around the world and still is, to give seminars and to show people how his method works. In this podcast episode he gives an insight into his life and describes how the Masterson Method exactly works.

The story begins on April 15, 1881, after Bat Masterson living in Arizona is telegraphed by an unknown informer, notifying Bat that his brother Jim was about to be assassinated by the co-owner of the Lady Gay, Jim Masterson's partner. In this episode I speak with Jim Masterson, the creator of the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method is a form of body work that you can learn to do on your own horse and you can also go deeper into training and become a practitioner.I’ve always marvelled at the amount of body work modalities in both the human and horse world and love the fact that there are so many because it is a reflection of the individuality of both humans and horses. With all of our complexities and differences, we can look at what can support us and our horse at any moment in time. The Masterson Method is one of those that you may very well want in your tool-box, and not just for the sake of body work. What I learned in this conversation with Jim is how this is more than a body work for horses. It is also a way to connect with your horse. If you can do this method of body work, then you will be a conscious horse person. Because to do this work you have to let your mind go, let go of the outcome and see what your horse has to say, or how they respond, in each moment.Sounds amazing right?Well I thought so to.Thank you to those of you who believed Jim was going to be a great podcast guest and asked me to interview him as you were right. In today's episode, we talk to Jim Masterson of world-renowned Masterson Method®. Jim, an equine massage therapist for USEF Endurance Teams from 2006 to 2014, teaches a unique method of equine bodywork to therapists and horse owners. When he first became interested in equine massage in 1997, Jim recognized that the horse exhibits certain neurological responses to touch as it releases tension in the body. Using those responses to guide his work, he developed a system in which the horse participates in the process by showing the practitioner where tension has accumulated, precisely how much pressure is needed to release it, and when it has been released. Together with a cadre of instructors worldwide, he offers courses in North America, Europe, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. His goal? For every horse to experience the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once. You can learn more about the Masterson Method on YouTube and at Jim's website: mastersonmethod.com Also, check out the trailer for a documentary recently made about Jim's work, A Mind Like Still Water.

My name is Jim Masterson, and I am the Director of Sports Medicine, and The Concussion Center at Excela Health in Greensburg, PA. We have an extremely busy concussion program, seeing local high school and collegiate athletes, as well those community members injured in motor vehicle, slip and fall, work related incidents etc. While my initial interest was in sports concussion, I have grown increasingly fond of seeing our adult population with ongoing persistent post concussive symptoms (PPCS). This group of patients is so misunderstood, and so need appropriate medical evaluation, treatment, and compassion. We have a team of athletic trainers, physical therapists, vestibular therapists, speech therapists, vision therapists, counselors, neuro chiropractors, EMDR therapists, yoga/meditation instructors and many more working together to improve outcomes, understanding, and general well-being for these individuals. Over the past several years we have started a well-attended support group for PPCS patients and their significant others, as well as a private face book page. We have nearly completed the process of starting a non-profit organization, The Westmoreland County Concussion Awareness Group. The ultimate goal is to improve the understanding of this invisible injury, and to increase available resources to promote neuroplasticity and healing. https://www.facebook.com/ExcelaHealth This episode is brought to you by Integrated Brain Centers

Jim Masterson Explains His Method Early in my horsemanship journey, I volunteered at Equine Affaire in Pomona. So it must have been around 2006 or 2007, while moving from one exhibit to another, that I saw this man giving a demonstration about massaging a horse.  Well, at least that's what it looked like to me. Over the course of the weekend, and the years I continued to volunteer; I saw Jim Masterson a couple of times. My duties as a volunteer always moved me around, so I never got to see Jim's entire presentation from start to finish. The way he place his hands on the horse appealed to me. Being a tactile person, I love to put my hands all over my horses. But I was doing it because it felt good to me.  It wasn't until years later that I realized Jim was doing it to elicit a very specific response from the horse. The Masterson Method developed to help relieve tension that builds up in a horse's body. The Masterson Method I kept bumping into the Masterson Method in my work with horses and this podcast.  There was a practitioner set up when I covered the Skills of the Rancho.  And, I had seen a practitioner at another equine expo. A few years later, when I saw a man doing bodywork on a horse, I asked him to explain what the purpose.  I met Will Friday and had him on the show to talk about The Jim Masterson Method and equine nutrition. There is a lot of information on the Masterson Method website. I suggest you definitely checkout the video on the "Bladder Meridian". Use it on your horse. The results will amaze you and you'll build a stronger bond with your horse. I spoke with Jim Masterson on Oct 22, 2020 and we spoke about doing the next thing and how stopping can both be intuition. We also spoke about how he was just lead to do the next thing and the next thing and by not getting in the way his curiosity and willingness has taken him from being a groom to a teacher of teachers of his own method of helping horses release tension and pain that is around the world. I see a huge correlation between his processes and how we all can bring more insight and be lead if we just Doubt the Doubt and How Stopping Getting Out of the Way and Doing Nothing can be intuition. BioIn 1998, while Jim was grooming horses on the U.S. hunter-jumper show circuit, he noticed while watching physical therapists work on horses that the horse exhibited certain subtle changes in behavior that correlated to what the therapists were doing. He learned that if you trust and follow what the horse is telling you as you work on it, the horse’s body will participate in the process of releasing tension. The result is not only an improvement in performance, but also in the trust that develops between the horse and human. From 2004 to 2013 Jim worked on top equine competitors on the US hunter-jumper circuit in events such as the USEF and Maclay Medal series, and FEI Grand Prix, Nations Cup, Pan American and World Cup jumping events, and with members of the USEF Singles Driving Team.In 2006, Jim was invited to accompany the U.S. Endurance Team to the FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. Team member Jennifer Niehaus said afterward, “Of all the things that were done for my horse Cheyenne, the bodywork Jim did was the most beneficial. He has truly never moved as nicely as he did in Germany.” In 2008 Jim was again asked to accompany the Team to the FEI World Endurance Championships in Malaysia. Team member Meg Sleeper, DVM; “It is impossible to overestimate Jim’s ability to keep performance horses working at their peak level. Simply put, he is like having a secret weapon.”He continued to accompany the team to the 2010 WEG in Lexington, the 2012 World Championships in England, and the 2014 WEG in Normandy, France.Since 2006, over 4,000 horse owners have attended Masterson Method Weekend Seminar-Workshops, and he has trained over 330 Masterson Method Certified Practitioners in 20 countries. His book and DVD, Beyond Horse Massage, has sold over 50,000 copies and been translated into six languages. LightEdge started out as an ISP and fell into becoming a data center company which led them to build a data center inside a limestone mine and expanding to 3 colocation facilities. Here's the story of how they got there. This is an episode of HawkTalk, datacenterHawk's series of candid one on one conversations with executives and leaders in the data center industry. If you enjoyed this episode, you can check them all out on our blog. LightEdge began their journey in the data center industry after starting out as an internet service provider and then out of necessity building and operating their own colocation facility. Since then they have become a data center provider with multiple facilities across the US that focus on compliance. If you're short on time, check out a few of our quick takeaways below. LightEdge's entrance into the data center industry LightEdge started out as an ISP, but built their first data center in Des Moines, Iowa out of necessity after they deployed their first cloud platform. They partnered with a construction company and built a data center because at that time the idea of a colocation facility had yet to become as wide spread as it is today. Growth into the Kansas City market LightEdge had maxed out the first facility they built with 4-5 years, so they decided to expand into Kansas City with another building. LightEdge got connected with Lamar Hunt and his family, who committed to filling 800,000 SF of data center space if they were to build a Kansas City facility. With that commitment, LightEdge began construction of their 2nd data center which is located inside of a limestone mine that is owned by the Hunt family. Acquiring a third facility in Omaha After building facilities in Des Moines and Kansas City, LightEdge looked to add a 3rd facility to their profile and wanted it to be near their already existing data centers. After surveying options, they settled on building in Omaha because that location would give them a good triangulation between their other two data centers and offer similar hazard risk as their other facilities.

Many of you will have heard me talk about this integrated bodywork practice before and it's something I'm utilizing on a near-daily basis together with my own horses. I've found the results to be fascinating and profound, and I really believe that the Masterson Method is something that all horse owners need to have in their knowledge bank. Over the course of our conversation we talk about: ⭐️ The what, how and why of the Masterson Method: How you can apply it to bring awareness to, relieve and release underlying patterns of tension with your horse ⭐️ The role of awareness and intuition in allowing for relaxation ⭐️ The signs of tension and signs of release: How to recognize both and create space for optimal release and balance We are also throwing down the challenge to you to watch the Bladder Meridian Video that Jim mentioned over the course of our talk (I'll share the link in the show notes of this episode) and try it out for yourself. The Masterson Method with Will Friday Will Friday is a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner.  I ran across Will Friday at the Skills of the Rancho this summer.  The Skills celebrates the tradition of the Californio Bridlehorse.  I was walking around the stables when I saw this man doing what looked like a cross between chiropractic and massage on a horse in the breezeway.  I stood and watched for a while and found the procedure fascinating.  As Will skillfully tugged, pulled, and laid his fingers on the horse, I could see the horse relax.  In our short conversation that day, Will said he was trying to let the horse release tension and soreness in his body using the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method, developed by horseman Jim Masterson, is a systematic way of releasing tension and soreness in horses.  The procedure can last between 1 and 2 hours as the practitioner places fingers along the horse's body looking for areas of tension and soreness. I contacted Will at his company Performance Equine BodyWork.  He invited me to a Parelli clinic that was being hosted by one of his clients at the 3L Ranch.  Owners of the ranch, Maurice Thibault and Susan Nelson, invited me to come up and observe the clinic and watch Will work on some of their clinic horses.  Both Maurice and Susan are 4-Star Parelli Professionals. Peacock. During the thirty-minute podcast, many legends of the old west are revealed to include the characterization of Bat Masterson, A.B. Webster, Tom Nixon, Pat Sughrue, Fred Singer, and Jim Masterson.

This week I’ve got Haley Woodward and Colby Brinkman out of Austin Texas.  To get a good idea of each of their forging skills have a look at each of their websites, www.Haleywoodward.com and www.metalmantis.com .  We had a great conversation about the each of their blacksmithing backgrounds, the Austin Forging Competition they started, which by the way is coming up on April 21st and let me announce the competitors that will be there this year; Monica Coyne, John Rais and Steven Yusko, The Vasquez Brothers, Mike Rossi and Daniel Beck, JR Lodico, Jim Masterson and Logan Hirsh (2017 winners), Meagan Crowley and Elizabeth Brim, James Viste and Brad Nichols.  Anyway, Haley and Colby talk about the infamous bus ride to Mexico and about their duo demo at the CBA Spring Conference. And that brings us to our sponsor for today’s episode and that’s the 2018 CBA Spring Conference organizers. To register, head over to www.calsmith.org and click on the events tab for the online registration button. What We Talked About   While Haley was in college when he took a sculpture class with a metal working component, after making several welded sculptures he searched for a blacksmithing college program to further his metal working skills.  He found that Austin Community College offered a few blacksmith classes and moved to Austin for enrollment.  Haley and Colby met on a college field trip to Mexico, actually a 37-hour bus ride to Santa Clara Del Cobre, Mexico for a 3-week copper smithing course. Colby’s background also started with taking classes at the Austin Community College in 1995. Colby spent 2 years in Europe as a blacksmith apprentice, specifically with Joseph Muck in the Czech Republic, Sebastian Fisher in Spain and Claudio Bottero in Italy. Haley and Colby talk about how the Austin Metal Authority started, basically because they needed a name for a studio tour they participated in. The Austin Forging Competition is an annual event that Haley and Colby started in their Austin Metal Authority shop, they talk about how it has now moved to the Mobile Loaves Community site and has about 1000 attendees.   Guest Links Ernst Heinrich Haeckel “Art Forms in Nature” book on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Forms-Nature-Dover-Pictorial-Archive/dp/0486229874/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0486229874&pd_rd_r=01ZJJZGQ0DTFXCPY9ADB&pd_rd_w=IOZy7&pd_rd_wg=TCpO3&psc=1&refRID=01ZJJZGQ0DTFXCPY9ADB Colby Brinkman Website – metalmantis.com Haley Woodward Website – haleywoodward.com The Devil’s Blacksmith Documentary -- https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-devil-s-blacksmith-documentary-arts--2#/
