Shelby is a professional horse trainer and equine behavior consultant with over 24 years of experience across multiple disciplines—including Arabian showing, hunter/jumpers, dressage, and even racehorses. She's also taken her education seriously, working toward her Certificate of Equine Science and earning her Equine Behavior Consultant certification through IAABC. Her approach to training has evolved massively over the years, moving away from traditional punishment-based methods toward a more ethical, science-backed way of working with horses. Training Piaffe & The Road to Collection: Connection, Communication, & Biomechanics with Kelly de Geus

In this episode of The Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kelly de Geus: an amazing horsewoman known for her ability to train horses the piaffe in a light, soft, willing, biomechanically correct way. Kelly de Geus is a dedicated horse trainer and coach from the Netherlands, who has been captivated by horses for as long as she can remember. For over a decade, Kelly's main focus has been on training horses herself, developing a specialty in teaching horses to piaffe and passage in hand. This is always a result of optimal communication and body use, and never a quick fix or trick. Having trained over 1000 horses in hand, Kelly now primarily focuses on sharing the knowledge she gained by doing so, thereby helping more people (and, in turn, more horses) feel better, improve posture and optimise performance.   I first reached out to Kelly for online lessons years ago after being mesmerised by how light and happy her horses looked in the piaffe. At the time, she didn't have online resources, but she agreed to help me through online lessons and I was blown away by her approach. She taught me that that piaffe is reflection of correct basics, and that there are a sequence of things that need to be in place before the piaffe is possible. Her values in training horses align closely to my own so I am so happy to share her voice with the horse world.   In this episode, we cover: ✨ The true purpose of piaffe as a diagnostic and gymnastic exercise (it's more than just fancy footwork and it's not a ‘circus trick'!) ✨The importance of conncection, communication, & biomechanics ✨ Common mistakes & how to know if your horse is ready to start training the piaffe ✨ The groundwork that sets the foundation for collection ✨ Adjusting her training approach to different horses  ✨The role of positive reinforcement in her training ✨Plus so much more! If you've ever dreamed of training the piaffe, this is THE episode for you!

If you've ever found yourself questioning what is the most ethical way to train horses, felt like an outsider when it comes to exploring different methods, and/or you're a mum trying to balance horses, life, and kids…then this episode is for you! A while ago, I received a message on Facebook from Chloe Bailey, who had joined the new free Horse Mums FB group. She sent me a Google Doc in response to a question I had posted about how people navigate the use of reinforcements. Her response was so insightful that I knew it had to be shared, so here we are! I sat down with Chloe Bailey, a welfare-concious ‘amateur' horse trainer who has, like many of us, been asking those horse welfare questions and contemplating on how we can best navigate the use of reinforcement types in training.   We spoke about: Chloe's horse journey and how she navigates the use of reinforcements in training What led her to explore positive reinforcement (R+) Overcoming guilt from past training methods and advice for others facing the same struggles Balancing idealism with practicality in training The biggest misconceptions about positive reinforcement (R+) and negative reinforcement (R-) Dealing with a shift in identity after moving away from traditional horse communities Experimenting with longer delays between the click and reward – key insights The future of R+ in the horse world – what changes Chloe hopes to see in the next 5–10 years How becoming a mother has changed her horsemanship The challenges of being a horse mum and human mum – and how she manages them Chloe's latest horsemanship breakthrough Her favourite horse books and resources- including 2 authors that are completely new to me which I'm excited to read Her personal horse goals for the future Plus so much more!

Thanks to Nina who on Instagram told me about Chris, once I took one look at his website I asked for an interview, I knew he’d have some gems for us all.Chris grew up in a home that was not safe and as a sensitive child honed his skills in reading body language like so many of us have done from these types of upbringing. He also learned that the lack of congruence was not safe either, what people are saying and their actions were not aligned, this does not allow us to relax, we cannot rest in our nervous system, we are living in our fight flight mode. We have choices in this situation as a child, fight, leave or shut down. A lot of people I know chose to shut down. Chris was brave enough to leave and this is what eventually led him to a life with horses. When Chris started working with horses people told him that it was not like he was learning to train horses, it looked like he was remembering horses. I believe this is the skills that he honed in his early life in a not safe environment about body language. Horses spoke his language and he spoke theirs.I have always believed that as horse people we are doing the best we can with the information we have, this is why I started the podcast, to get more information out into the world so that when we know better we can do better. There are some great gems in this conversation from Chris about body language that can help us do better. To connect with Chris please follow these linkswebsiteFacebook

Martin is a great trainer in his own right and also keeps up his own training, he is currently working under Steph Vincent to develop his in-hand work.I was lucky enough to attend one of Martin’s clinics in Brisbane about 5 years ago with my mare Gypsy. He works in such a gentle and intuitive way with horses and it is a true partnership and 2-way communication. In this conversation we talk about many things, one of them being what the word liberty really means and I’m so glad we did as it is something that I feel has been a little misused in the horse world. To be at liberty a horse is not just free of tack. I will read you the dictionary definition of liberty so you have something to ponder while listening to Martin’s story. It means the quality or state of being free. The power to do as one pleases. Freedom from physical restraint. Freedom from arbitrary or despotic control, despot means a ruler with absolute power and authority. The positive enjoyment of various privileges. The power of choice. So while you ponder that, sit back and enjoy this conversation. To connect with Martin please click on the links belowFacebookhttps://www.facebook.com/MartinContrerasHorseTrainingatLiberty/Instagramhttps://instagram.com/martin_contreras_horsemanship?igshid=1blrtdrmm7kghFor clinics, in-person or online Lessons, contact Martin via social media or at horsetrainingatliberty@gmail.com.

She is young and had the courage to understand there was a different way of being with horses from a teenager, and as a natural part of the social media generation, has a large following on Instagram, and is showing the world of horsepeople young and old, what is possible through choice and positive reinforcement. She is still young and knows that even though she is working in a new way, that there is even further for her to go. She is at a stage of really listening to her horses and seeing what they have to say, on where they can go together. I will be keeping a close eye on Mosie’s work as she develops it over the coming years, she is a real leader for her generation and I love that she was willing to share her story with a fellow podcaster. In this episode you will hear from Mel Fleming from Connecting with Horses and Riding with Synchronicity.Mel has been lucky enough to spend her life around horses. Her family were well known horse people and she was able, through hard work and support from her family, to go through the ranks of the horse world and work at a high level of dressage, to the highest level of natural horsemanship where she worked internationally with Pat and Linda Parelli among many other internationally renowned trainers.Mel is one of those people who keeps asking questions, she never settles for less. It seems she needs to go deep and make sure the horse is alright on every level as her deep need to connect fully with the horse and make a true partnership comes before the end performance result she is seeking. This is what has taken Mel all over the world developing her skills as she goes, the need to find someone who has the answers to her questions. In asking these questions Mel has been able to form her own style of horsemanship. On her website she says. “I think that true horsemanship is horsemanship from the horse’s perspective. What would horse’s call horsemanship and who would horses call a horseman?”“TRUE HORSEMANSHIP means putting yourself in the horse’s skin, seeing things through their eyes, thinking how they are thinking and feeling how they are feeling. Going beyond merely perceiving them as prey animals and knowing the individual beings (the spirits) that they are. In equal proportion to understanding the spirit of who horses are, true horsemanship also means understanding their physical bodies, so they can be ridden with true balance and healthy biomechanics. This is the only way that the ridden horse can stay sound, be healthy, be calm and yet responsive, enjoy their work and maximise their performance. This is what “Connecting with Horses & Riding with Synchronicity” strives to achieve.”Mel has the ability and the formula to go deep into each horse and help build a bond between horse and rider that is strong, and because of the biomechanics element, long lasting and sound. You can find out when Mel is coming to a town near you on her website and you can follow her on Facebook.Mel will open your mind to the difference between the use of techniques versus true connection when working with horses. She will challenge your current beliefs around horsemanship, and that can only be a good thing. I love learning more about true connection and Mel certainly gave me a lot to consider.I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

Inspired By Horses ~ Jonathan Field Jonathan at Horsemen's Re-Union On today's show we have a terrific trainer and horseman Jonathan Field.  I first met Jonathan at Horsemen's Re-Union in Paso Robles last year.  He was starting colts and one look at easy, smooth moves in the round pen and you knew he was relating to theses young horses.  His story is quite inspirational.   While a young man working in Canada, Jonathan suffered an industrial accident that nearly amputated his hand.  He recovered and was drawn back into the world of horses.  Yes, you could say he was truly inspired by horses. Jonathan has studied under some of the greats in the horse world including George Morris and Pat Parelli.  He has developed his own style and program of horsemanship he calls Inspired by Horses. Jonathan has performed at Road to The Horse, has presented many times at Western States Horse Expo.  He headlines at horse shows and expositions all across Canada including The Mane Event and even produces his own equine conference called Jonathan Field and Friends. Jonathan has used his Inspired by Horses philosophy to write a book, The Art of Liberty Training.  And he has also produced The Foundation for Excellence JUMPING with George Morris.  All this in addition to his own DVD training series. Today we talk about his life and how he got inspired by horses.  We also talk about a few "real life" training issues I'm having.  Jonathan offers some great advice and I am already seeing results! Links Mentioned on the show JonathanField.net Jonathan Field Horsemanship - facebook About Us Welcome to the Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship.   I am your host  John Harrer.  Along with my wife, Ranae, each week on the show we talk about some aspect of owning a horse.  It could be feeding or supplementation.  It could be bits and bridles, tack, or cowboy boots.  We cover training problems, or competing in shows.  We talk to farriers and horse chiropractors.  And we travel to places we think you would like to take your horse.   That's what the Whoa Podcast is all about. Whoa Podcast About Horses Horsemanship

Holiday Horse Gifts Okay, you have got the person on your gift list that loves horses.  What do you get them?  Sure, they will always need a new brush or mane de-tangler, but why not get them something useful?  On today's show we take a look at some very useful gift ideas. First, we have Rebecca Didier from Trafalgar Square Books and www.HorseandRiderBooks.com.  Rebecca offers five different books tailored for almost any rider.  The books are: The Art of Liberty Training for Horses How Good Riders Get Good Tex Building a Life Together—You and Your Horse The Riding Doctor Each one of these books his rich in illustration and gives you information about how to be a better horseman and how to improve your riding.  For those cold winter months when you can't be out at the barn, you can still be working on your skills. Do you have someone looking for a little hardware?  Listen in as Ed Jessup from Case Cutlery joins us and talks a little horses and then tells us about the selection of Case pocket knives that would be perfect for anyone on your list.  Personally, I was fascinated when he was describing the Equestrian's Pocket Knife: a handy knife with a hoof pick tool built right into the knife. Case has been making knives for over a hundred years.  They are still manufactured right here in the United States. This would be a gift that you could carry for many years to come.  Case also has a wide assortment of handles available in a bunch of colors.  Ed tells me they even make some pink ones.  Check them out.  Ed suggests that if you are looking online you may want to check out Shepards Hill Cutlery Online.   Contact Us We have well over 70 episodes up now and you can find them all for free on iTunes, with our Android App in the Amazon store, and now Stitcher, or wherever podcasts are distributed.  Get the Stitcher app and let us know how it works.  It's Free.  You can also find every episode and more about the show at whoapodcast.com.  Please join our email list.
