This week's episode is a good one! After reading about David's story on Team Oakden's Facebook page we knew we had to interview him. After a break from riding and not intending to start again, a chance encounter whilst at the dentist, led to David and his wife Krishna finding themselves at Dunbog Farm with two new horses. David chats to EquiTeam's Liz Daniels about the ups and downs of his inspiring journey, including how close he came to giving up after disappointments with his first horse George and an injury shortly after buying the very lovely Hamish. Luckily for David, after sending a message to his trainers Sarah and James Oakden telling them he was giving up, they decided to ignore it for a few weeks and slowly built David's confidence back up. Roll on the end of the season and David and Hamish have completed Blair BE90, been out pointing their toes to win at British Dressage and recently came home from show jumping with a second in their first British Novice. Caroline shares how she was persuaded to come over from the dark side (SJ!) and give eventing a go, how she still finds the dressage the most stressful element and how by finding herself slightly older horses, who have been there and done it, she has had to really focus on her own riding. Caroline also give us the best tip for keeping fit, and it involves a pole and not a lot of clothes! This week we are chatting to Jodie Neill aka The Eventing Dentist. Jodie is an amateur eventer, a full-time cosmetic dentist and Mum to a one year old little boy, Ollie. Jodie's own journey into horse ownership started when she went looking for a dark bay school master called Mr Darcy to go eventing, and ended up with a 4 year old chestnut mare called Clover or Pops as she is affectionately known at home. From not knowing what it was to get a horse on the bit and being terrified to jump their first 75cm show jumping track, Jodie and Clover have since been double clear at Intermediate level, completed a 3* and finished 9th at the Novice Championships at Gatcombe.   What really shines through during this episode is Jodie's honesty about all of the speed bumps they have encountered along the way and how she has tackled them. She is brutally honest about her feelings of being an imposter and ‘not belonging' in the same collecting ring as the pros. And when it comes to juggling life, work and being a Mum, Jodie sums it up beautifully…. ”If you want it enough and need it enough you will make it happen” even if that means riding at 9pm in the pouring rain! This is authentic leadership at its very best, leaving you with colourful images, memorable stories and a motivating legacy of what is possible. Philip’s Leadership Essentials (1:09:00): 1. Take a long hard look in the mirror and get to know yourself. Spend time evaluating your values, understand your own unconscious biases. They’ll be useful keeping you in check and on balance 2. Share how you respond to things, be transparent and don’t be frightened about sharing your cognitive processes. Modelling those processes can be so helpful for others 3. Don’t believe your own hype - the greatest challenge is to be the same person in and out of “the leadership chair” Authentic Leadership at its core.

Ros Canter’s rise to the top of eventing reads like a Hollywood script. She only moved up to five-star level in 2015 and just three years later was World Champion. The horse that took her there was All Star B, but he’s never been as easy ride and at 17.1hh he was certainly a challenge for the 5.2ft rider. In this interview Ros reveals about how she nearly gave up on her dream of becoming a top eventer, due to her nerves on the cross-country, which she still battles with today. Hearing Ros talk so honestly about her nerves is an inspiration – and she also offers handy tips on riding at speed on cross-country. Ros talks about: · The system created by trainer British Eventing performance coach Chris Bartle, which helped conquer her demons and go on to become World Champion · The importance of getting the basics right · What makes All Star B such a super star · Her hopes for making it to Tokyo and the plan she hopes will get her there · The pressures of staying at the top of her sport · The challenge of juggling motherhood with eventing · The proudest moment for her own mum – and it’s not being crowned World Champion! · Why eventing wasn’t always her career choice – and what made her change her mind · Up-and-coming exiting new horses We hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as we loved making it. From as little as a cup of coffee a month, you can help me keep this podcast going. There are many tiers that you can choose from and if everyone who listens gave only $5 per month, it would make a massive positive difference to me.There is a tier in there for a small business subscription just like the one Peter Papp took up from Peter and the Herd, this is the one where your business gets a mention each week on the podcast. Peter works with equine behaviour and trauma recovery. Equine communication. Human and horse relationship building. Peter has had communication with my mare Gypsy, who is the mare with me in the podcast picture and he was spot on about everything so I can highly recommend his work personally. Click here to connect with Peter and the Herd. It’s great to be bringing you another episode and I’m very happy to say we will be more regular again from here on in. The wonderful Lauren Arcay from Canada has joined the team and is doing the reaching out to guests for me and the podcast. The relief and joy I have of seeing a booking for a podcast interview come through into my emails is the best. So thank you Lauren for all you are doing it is so appreciated. In this episode, thanks to Lauren, I speak with Dr Sue Dyson. When I interviewed Dr Ann Bondi from The Saddle Research Trust she suggested I speak with Sue and I’m so glad that we found the time to speak with her because oh my she is out to change the horse world in a wonderful way. She has developed a tool on how to recognise the 24 behaviours indicating pain in the ridden horse. And she is backed by all the science you could possibly ever need.I could read out all Dr Sue Dyson has achieved in her lifetime thus far but it would probably take me 20 minutes to get through it all, and I’m not exaggerating! I’ll shorten it somewhat to give you an idea.Sue is a qualified vet who went on to specialise in clinical orthopaedics and lameness and poor performance in horses. Sue has been awarded fellowships PhD’s and is a Founding Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.Sue has lectured internationally and published widely on equine orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging. She has published more than 310 refereed papers in scientific journals, relating to lameness and diagnostic imaging in the horse.Sue is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Equine Veterinary Journal, Equine Veterinary Education and acts as a regular peer reviewer for a large number of journals.Sue was been a long-standing member of Council of the British Equine Veterinary Association and is a past President. She has also been a long-standing member of the Board of the World Equine Veterinary Association and Vice-President.Sue has been awarded far too many prizes to list and has been made an honorary member of Societa Italiana Veterinari Per Equini (SIVE), Italy. Sue was inducted into the University of Kentucky Equine Research Hall of Fame.Sue also holds the Instructors and Stable Managers Certificates of the British Horse Society (BHSI) and has competed at advanced level in both horse trials and show jumping, producing horses that have subsequently competed successfully at the Olympic Games and World Equestrian Games. She is a former veterinary advisor to British Eventing. Sue is veterinary advisor to the Saddle Research Trust and to Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre. And that folks, is her CV cut down to about 5%.Sue as you can see is not only a vet but she is an accomplished horsewoman who knows that to find the real issue with a horse you must do the basic check that most vets do then you have to see the horse ridden to see if the rider has any biomechanical issues that are effecting the horse, then she may even ride the horse herself to see if those issues are still present with a balanced rider like herself.Sue’s tool that she has created will save you money on vet visits, it will give you an educated opinion for your vet to consider, and it may even help to educate your vet on how to deal with pain in horses.Sue has created a tool that we as horse owners need as we know there is an issue with our horse but no vet can find it. Well this tool can.I hope you enjoy this talk and I really hope you can spread the word about Sue’s creation as horses all over the world will benefit if you do.To connect with Sue herself you can email her sue.dyson@aol.comTo see the Ridden Pain Ethogram course click here© Copyrighted Tracy Malone

My guest this week is British Eventer Lucinda Green who at 66 has not lost one ounce of her passion and dedication to horses and horse sport. Lucinda epitomizes being a sportswoman whether she is training horses or coaching riders around the world or competing on her only horse. She began riding at the age of four but didn’t own her own horse until she was 15. Be Fair proved to be a birthday present that would launch her career and their partnership forever be carved in the history books of the sport.  They made their Olympic debut in 1973 and this was only the beginning of Lucinda‘s success, as she went on to claim a number of gold and silver medals and two European Championships. In 1977 Lucinda scored a hat trick, coming first at Badminton, Burghley and the European Championships. She is the only rider to have won the prestigious Badminton six times, on six different horses from 1973 to 1984. Lucinda has won the Tony Collins Trophy, awarded to the rider with the most British Eventing points in an eventing season, a record seven times and in 2008 won the outstanding contribution to equestrianism award. No-one has done more to promote the sport and influence generations of event riders than Lucinda in her role as British Team Selector, Coach, Trainer and Journalist.  Lucinda still competes on her one horse and has no groom to help her, instead she enjoys the sport with the same enthusiasm as she did some 50 years ago. She is constantly on the road to compete around Europe while juggling being the mother of two - Lucy and Fred. Her spring four star goal of Badminton did not go according plan with early retirement for Perfect Stranger following a personal best dressage under the new system.  She has since been collecting ribbons this season including a win at Floors Castle CIC2* with Monkeying Around, a third and fourth place at Chatsworth CIC3*. Chris caught up with Izzy just after she arrived in Ireland for the Tattersalls event this weekend where she has a few rides before heading to Bramham. Izzy talks about managing her life as a parent and how the eventing community is home from home when her children are able to travel with her. She shares her thoughts on the current state of the sport, how tough it is to find young horses when there are so many riders fishing in the same pond, why owners should be given more consideration and how the sport is making significant changes without the riders being a part of the process.  For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.
