In this episode with reknowned equine body worker Jim Masterson, I got to know the origin story behind the Masterson Method and ask Jim about his perspective on a wide range of important topics including consent, pain and environment for our horses. One of my favourite take-aways from our conversation is the simple yet profound power of observation. Jim is skilled in mindful observation when it comes to attuning to horses and helping them release tension, and this is a skill that anyone can learn. We chatted about how, over time, this visual awareness begins to translate into a felt sense and improved palpatory skills, and how ultimately working on our horses' physical bodies becomes a relationship and trust building activity. If you've yet to try Jim's cornerstone technique, the Bladder Meridian, head over to YouTube or The Masterson Method website to learn how, and be sure to let us know how your horse responds! Jim Masterson is the founder of The Masterson Method – a breakthrough form of equine bodywork which helps enhance performance, suppleness, mobility, and comfort whilst developing the relationship and bond of trust between the horse and owner. He began his career in 2000, working on horses competing in U.S. Show Jumping events, before going on to become the Equine Bodywork Therapist for the USEF Endurance Team from 2006, through 2014. Since then, Jim's worked on thousands of equine athletes, competing in events such as the FEI World Cup, Pan American and World Equestrian Games competitions. He's the author of Beyond Horse Massage and Dressage Movements Revealed, and last year he paired up with Dr. Robin Robinett, DVM to release a new book, Beyond Dog Massage which applies the same intuitive and hands-on approach to help relieve soreness and achieve connection. Since 2006, over 10,000 people have attended Masterson Method Weekend Courses, and Jim and his instructors have trained over 500 Certified Practitioners in 20 countries. Jim's vision is to have every horse on the planet experience the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once, and to empower owners, carers, competitors or professionals with the means to deeply connect with their horse or dog.

This is Episode 10 of Season 4 and in it, Jec holds a Coaches' Corner with our frequent and friendly guest, Amy Skinner. The two horsewomen discuss body work and as well as other services that can be hired and provided to your horses. What do you think? We've had Jim Masterson, founder of the Masterson Method, present at the Best Horse Practices Summit twice. The evidence is certainly strong for this kind of body work helping horses. And Jim is a wonderful, generous presenter who has put hands on thousands of horses and mentored scores of Masterson Method providers. BHPS 2022 presentation. BHPS 2021 Presentation. But Jec and Amy are on to something when they talk about the possible red flags or, say, caution flags, when it comes to body work, chiropractic work, acupunture, as well as supplements, and other extra-care type elements of horse ownership. Are they worth it? Is there another reason you might be subscribing to it? I was listening to a podcast about self-care. Actually, it was about the industry of self-care, of all the stuff you can buy to care for yourself, of music to listen to, of essential oils to smell, of chairs and sunglasses, and, well, stuff! When really, though, self-care isn't about stuff at all. Thanks to our title sponsor, Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds, extremely handy and healthy bales of alfalfa, timothy, and grass blends. A great addition or substitute for your hay or grass and way better than grain. Check them out at lucernefarms.com. Also, thanks to Skratch Labs, makers of hydration drinks and snacks for athletes. I especially like their chocolate milk, which is great after a hard, long ride. Yes, heat it up and make hot cocoa, by all means. Check them out at skratch labs com Use besthorse25 for 25 percent off your order. Dr. Sherry King, in an article for Best Horse Practices, wrote that horses may not want or need the stuff Amy and Jec mentioned. She said: When we misinterpret our relationship with our horse, when we move beyond the role of caring steward to treating the horse like an extension of ourselves and our family, we err to the detriment of the horse. We end up loving it badly. The next time you catch yourself doing “something special” for your horse, stop. Think. Are you really doing this for your horse, or are you doing it for you? If it is really for you, is it also good for the horse? Beware false prophets of equine welfare – what they preach may actually be bad for horse's health. This is not a clarion call to stop all the extra stuff you're doing for your horses. But maybe cast a critical eye on it? Oh, I mentioned the podcast on self-care: The two women kind of dissected the self-care industry as appealing to our consumerist nature, that if we can just buy something that someone assures us is comforting and soothing, then we will be comforted and soothed. But, they pointed out, the ultimate comfort comes from turning inward not outward. It is doing the things that don't cost anything but time and effort. Like maybe meditation or really thinking about life priorities and then consciously shifting your days to better represent what you want and what you need. Like maybe riding more or giving your horses' more exercise since we know that's almost always of great benefit to the horses. We thank Sampson Moss and his business, Prairie Wind Hat Works for the generous sponsorship. Sampson makes custom hats from his place in Pincher Creek, Alberta. You can order one today and have it by the holidays. Thanks to Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – for generously sponsoring our podcast. Check out Pharm Aloe's aloe pellets which you can simply sprinkle on your horse's feed and Redmond's Rock on a Rope which you can simply hang on a fence. We think you'll love ‘em. Also thanks to Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. Patagonia just came out with a hemp tool bag that is awesome for tack and barn stuff, from hoof picks to brushes, sprays, and hobbles. It is reversable so the many pockets can live on the inside or outside. The hemp was grown in the US and the bag was sewn in the US. AND...we are giving away two of them! Give us feedback, suggest a topic or guest, or make a donation and you'll be automatically entered to win one of two free Patagonia WorkWear items that we give away every month. Don't forget that Redmond Equine is sending a complimentary syringe of Daily Gold Stress Relief to everyone who drops a tip in our donation jar. Pretty cool and a $15 value. If you get something of value from our podcast, please consider making a donation. We sure would appreciate it.

Interview with Crissi McDonald and Mark Rashid.I'm so excited! I asked Crissi a while ago if she would like to join me for a chat. She's been so busy with clinics and travel so it wasn't easy to fix a date but I'm happy to confirm we've finally recorded our session. As an added bonus, Mark kindly agreed to join us both as a guest too . . . how lovely is that! Two wonderful very successful individuals in their own right.I was so looking forward to chatting with Crissi and Mark and I wasn't disappointed. Crissi and Mark brought both knowledge and laughter to our conversation and they were happy to answer a few questions from the viewers who joined the live too.Two very special guests who are not only down to earth but also have a wealth of knowledge individually, as well as combined. So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this episode. Crissie McDonald.Growing up she was most motivated when the work she did would earn her time with horses: lessons, mucking stalls in trade for a ride on a friend's horse, babysitting to earn enough money for lessons, seeking out and finding horses where ever she could. Little did she know that all this time spent doing work would also be teaching her as well. She was certified as an instructor through the CHA when she was twenty and got her first horse at twenty-four years old. Three more followed within two years. She's had the pleasure to participate in western riding, working cattle, leading trail rides, managing large herds, showing in Hunt Seat Equitation and Dressage, taking jumping lessons, and has spent over thirty years working with many different breeds of horses and people from all over the world, as well as having the opportunity to learn from some of the horse industry's top leaders in our current understanding of humane horse practices. Crissi enjoys teaching at clinics with her husband Mark Rashid. She's a certified Masterson Method® equine bodyworker since 2017 and is also an instructor for the Masterson two-day Beyond Horse Massage workshops. Crissi is the author of three books, two about the human/equine bond. Her other book, North to Home, is a fiction novel.Mark Rashid.Mark Rashid is an internationally known author and horseman known for his ability to understand the horse's point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Mark's clinics are structured as one-on-one work with horses and riders and are immensely popular with people around the world. When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses. After years of practice, he has earned a third degree black belt in Yoshinkan aikido and now teaches the “way of harmony” in the local dojo as well as in his Aikido for Horseman workshops, which are known also by the name of “Aibado.”https://crissimcdonald.comhttps://www.markrashid.comhttps://www.facebook.com/consideringthehors Support the showVideo version (alongside applicable podcasts) can be viewed on facebook and YouTube.https://www.facebook.com/equinevoices.co.ukhttps://www.youtube.com/@equinevoicesukhttps://www.instagram.com/equinevoices.uk

Interview with Jim Masterson.I am always very grateful, when someone agrees to take time out of their busy schedule and agrees to do an interview with me and especially with someone they have never met or even know.I'm particularly pleased to have the chance to chat with Jim because a dear close friend of mine is a Masterson Method Coach and I've had the honour of watching her work and see the difference she makes to the horses she visits.I'm very grateful that Jim agreed to do an interview with me.Not only is he a very knowledgeable person, he happens to be very funny too!I loved spending a few hours chatting with him about his passion, his work.So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this episode, just as much as I did making it and hear a little from the man behind the method. Jim's Story:In 1998, while Jim was grooming horses on the U.S. hunter-jumper show circuit, he noticed while watching physical therapists work on horses that the horse exhibited certain subtle changes in behavior that correlated to what the therapists were doing. He learned that if you trust and follow what the horse is telling you as you work on it, the horse's body will participate in the process of releasing tension. The result is not only an improvement in performance, but also in the trust that develops between the horse and human.Jim and his team of instructors continue to travel the world teaching horse owners, trainers and therapists The Masterson Method. His goal is to have every horse on the planet have experienced the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once.https://www.facebook.com/MastersonMethodhttps://mastersonmethod.com/https://mastersonmethod.com/the-bladder-meridian-technique-from-light-to-the-core-video/
"You don't want to ignore the horse. Everything we do with this type of bodywork, we are paying attention to what the horse is saying. And so, you have to adjust what you are doing to what the horse is saying so that they're as relaxed as possible - because it doesn't work if they're not relaxed." -
Jim Masterson of the Masterson Method joins the crew to discuss everything about his interactive method of equine bodywork from how it started to how it helps horses today. Jim shares some wonderful insights about reading horses' behaviors and how his method truly helps to develop a deeper bond with our horses.
Jim Masterson is known as the founder of the Masterson Method. As a Horse-Massage-Therapist he spent some years with the US National team on tour. During this time he learned a lot about the neurological reactions horses have shown to certain touches. He also figured out that horses begin to relieve tension on their own if we humans interpret their reactions correctly and follow them. He was one of the first to develop an animal-centric approach instead of just using a human-centric method. As many people want to learn his method, he began to travel around the world and still is, to give seminars and to show people how his method works. In this podcast episode he gives an insight into his life and describes how the Masterson Method exactly works.

The film just scratches the surface of the work, but tells a brilliant story of how horses and humans come together and the impact they have on one another.FOLLOW ME ONLINE @:https://nikkiporter.ca/https://www.instagram.com/nikkiportercoaching/https://www.facebook.com/nikkiporterauthor/www.informedequestrian.comLINKS MENTIONED:https://mastersonmethod.com/product/a-mind-like-still-water-dvd/https://www.instagram.com/mastersonmethod/https://www.facebook.com/MastersonMethodhttps://www.instagram.com/dylansilver19/https://www.facebook.com/dylansilverofficialhttps://markrashid.comhttps://www.facebook.com/consideringthehorsehttps://www.thecircleupexperience.comPURCHASE THE CONSCIOUS COMMUNICATOR ONLINE @:https://www.balboapress.com/en/bookstore/bookdetails/772389-the-conscious-communicatorhttps://www.amazon.ca/Conscious-Communicator-Connection-Inspired-Horsemanship/dp/1982217375/ref=sr_1_1?crid=SL8DE7C6AJ2B&keywords=nikki+porter&qid=1574711772&sprefix=Nikki+Po%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-1https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/the-conscious-communicator-the-pursuit/9781982217372-item.html?ikwid=Nikki+Porter&ikwsec=Home&ikwidx=0Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=87421)
In this episode I speak with Jim Masterson, the creator of the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method is a form of body work that you can learn to do on your own horse and you can also go deeper into training and become a practitioner.I’ve always marvelled at the amount of body work modalities in both the human and horse world and love the fact that there are so many because it is a reflection of the individuality of both humans and horses. With all of our complexities and differences, we can look at what can support us and our horse at any moment in time. The Masterson Method is one of those that you may very well want in your tool-box, and not just for the sake of body work. What I learned in this conversation with Jim is how this is more than a body work for horses. It is also a way to connect with your horse. If you can do this method of body work, then you will be a conscious horse person. Because to do this work you have to let your mind go, let go of the outcome and see what your horse has to say, or how they respond, in each moment.Sounds amazing right?Well I thought so to.Thank you to those of you who believed Jim was going to be a great podcast guest and asked me to interview him as you were right. In today's episode, we talk to Jim Masterson of world-renowned Masterson Method®. Jim, an equine massage therapist for USEF Endurance Teams from 2006 to 2014, teaches a unique method of equine bodywork to therapists and horse owners. When he first became interested in equine massage in 1997, Jim recognized that the horse exhibits certain neurological responses to touch as it releases tension in the body. Using those responses to guide his work, he developed a system in which the horse participates in the process by showing the practitioner where tension has accumulated, precisely how much pressure is needed to release it, and when it has been released. Together with a cadre of instructors worldwide, he offers courses in North America, Europe, the UK, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. His goal? For every horse to experience the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once. You can learn more about the Masterson Method on YouTube and at Jim's website: mastersonmethod.com Also, check out the trailer for a documentary recently made about Jim's work, A Mind Like Still Water.

Jim Masterson Explains His Method Early in my horsemanship journey, I volunteered at Equine Affaire in Pomona. So it must have been around 2006 or 2007, while moving from one exhibit to another, that I saw this man giving a demonstration about massaging a horse. Well, at least that's what it looked like to me. Over the course of the weekend, and the years I continued to volunteer; I saw Jim Masterson a couple of times. My duties as a volunteer always moved me around, so I never got to see Jim's entire presentation from start to finish. The way he place his hands on the horse appealed to me. Being a tactile person, I love to put my hands all over my horses. But I was doing it because it felt good to me. It wasn't until years later that I realized Jim was doing it to elicit a very specific response from the horse. The Masterson Method developed to help relieve tension that builds up in a horse's body. The Masterson Method I kept bumping into the Masterson Method in my work with horses and this podcast. There was a practitioner set up when I covered the Skills of the Rancho. And, I had seen a practitioner at another equine expo. A few years later, when I saw a man doing bodywork on a horse, I asked him to explain what the purpose. I met Will Friday and had him on the show to talk about The Jim Masterson Method and equine nutrition. There is a lot of information on the Masterson Method website. I suggest you definitely checkout the video on the "Bladder Meridian". Use it on your horse. The results will amaze you and you'll build a stronger bond with your horse. Equine Nutrition With Will Friday Equine nutrition is a complicated subject, so I went out and found someone who has been studying it for quite some time. Will Friday has been on the show before talking about the Masterson Method, a blend of massage and chiropractic. Will works on some very expensive performance horses. As part of his program, he has taught himself the ins-and-outs of equine nutrition. I've been working my horse, Scratch, pretty hard as we prep for Ranch Riding shows. I'm using Scratch, because my 20-year-old mare, Jessie, has had some lameness issues. I invited Will Friday up to Bakersfield to talk about nutrition and see if the Masterson Method help my mare. As it turned out, we spent the day together. Will spent about 2 hours adjusting Jessie. The Masterson Method is fascinating. You can see the horses release tension right before your eyes. Will began with an assessment, then methodically worked from nose to tail, adjusting every part of that horse. When he finished with Jessie, he did the same with Scratch. The difference between the two horses was fascinating. Each horse had different areas where they stored tension. Will worked his hands all over Scratch. Both horses seemed to love the attention. Equine Nutrition Once we finished, we headed to the house and sat down to discuss the horses' nutritional needs. Will, you might remember, was the one who recommended we get a hay analysis. Will plugged the data from the hay analysis into an equine nutrition program. Instantly we had information on where our program was strong and where we had holes. Will recommended two products: Wild Gold Camelina Oil and Custom Equine Vermont Blend. Our horses began the supplements October 15, 2020 and I eager to see the results these products bring. I spoke with Jim Masterson on Oct 22, 2020 and we spoke about doing the next thing and how stopping can both be intuition. We also spoke about how he was just lead to do the next thing and the next thing and by not getting in the way his curiosity and willingness has taken him from being a groom to a teacher of teachers of his own method of helping horses release tension and pain that is around the world. I see a huge correlation between his processes and how we all can bring more insight and be lead if we just Doubt the Doubt and How Stopping Getting Out of the Way and Doing Nothing can be intuition. BioIn 1998, while Jim was grooming horses on the U.S. hunter-jumper show circuit, he noticed while watching physical therapists work on horses that the horse exhibited certain subtle changes in behavior that correlated to what the therapists were doing. He learned that if you trust and follow what the horse is telling you as you work on it, the horse’s body will participate in the process of releasing tension. The result is not only an improvement in performance, but also in the trust that develops between the horse and human. From 2004 to 2013 Jim worked on top equine competitors on the US hunter-jumper circuit in events such as the USEF and Maclay Medal series, and FEI Grand Prix, Nations Cup, Pan American and World Cup jumping events, and with members of the USEF Singles Driving Team.In 2006, Jim was invited to accompany the U.S. Endurance Team to the FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. Team member Jennifer Niehaus said afterward, “Of all the things that were done for my horse Cheyenne, the bodywork Jim did was the most beneficial. He has truly never moved as nicely as he did in Germany.” In 2008 Jim was again asked to accompany the Team to the FEI World Endurance Championships in Malaysia. Team member Meg Sleeper, DVM; “It is impossible to overestimate Jim’s ability to keep performance horses working at their peak level. Simply put, he is like having a secret weapon.”He continued to accompany the team to the 2010 WEG in Lexington, the 2012 World Championships in England, and the 2014 WEG in Normandy, France.Since 2006, over 4,000 horse owners have attended Masterson Method Weekend Seminar-Workshops, and he has trained over 330 Masterson Method Certified Practitioners in 20 countries. His book and DVD, Beyond Horse Massage, has sold over 50,000 copies and been translated into six languages. It is the No. 1 seller in the equine veterinary category on Amazon.Jim and his team of instructors continue to travel the world teaching horse owners, trainers and therapists The Masterson Method. Feed and Nutrition with Will Friday How much do you worry about the quality of feed and nutrition of your horse? I confess, I let my horses get a little "extra" fat this last winter. It wasn't until I took Scratch in for a routine dental and vaccination and we got on the scale. He was 1,014 lbs. Now, I'm not exactly sure what his ideal weight ought to be, but I KNOW it's not 1,000 lbs. It's difficult to get a horse to lose weight. You can't just feed less. Horses need food going through their system constantly to stay healthy. That's just how that works. I was looking for ways to support my horse nutritionally when I came across my friend, Will Friday's, new website. You might remember Will from a previous episode we did on The Masterson Method. Will has an interest in feed and nutrition and consults many of his clients. I enlisted Will to help me with our horses nutrition. Will offered two very important charts to reference. The first in the NRC chart for horses. This lists the amounts of nutrients horses require. The second is an average analysis of alfalfa hay. Useful Tables Both tables are important when trying to figure out what your horse needs. We talked about a lot of charts and databases offering nutritional information. After I spoke with Will, I did a little research and found Equi-analytical’s website. There is a cool little page with feed analysis. The link is on the episode page.https://equi-analytical.com/common-feed-profiles/interactive-common-feed-profile/ Here is a link to a good video for taking a hay analysis sample: https://youtu.be/sJMyvYyYZek Since I purchase my hay for the year from one supplier, I think I’ll spend the $18 and get a hay analysis this year. I’ll let you know what I find out. Question of the Week:What are some things I can do on the ground to connect with a new horse or reconnect with one I've had awhile? This week's episode focuses on how building a relationship requires a certain level of comfort and "conversation" between horse and human. The horse needs to feel safe in the human's presence before any work together will be meaningful. Connection is the foundation.
This podcast is one of my geekiest yet and I loved it! What a pleasure to chat with equine body worker Tami Elkayam about the equine fascial lines, her recent osteopathy training, craniosacral work and the essential role of the TMJ, and much more. A must listen for any equine body workers out there, and for horse lovers interested in learning more about how their horses bodies work. Scroll down the page for all the resources shared - I definitely have some new books on my wish list! Tami started her equine therapy journey with the Masterson Method and worked her way through certification, and then continued her training with all four levels of Equine CranioScaral through the Upledger institute. As she finds new tools and gathers more knowledge, she feels able to better treat and help horses. She has recently started a new journey as an equine osteopath through the Vluggen Institute. From Tami: I believe that therapists need empathy, humility and an open mind. I believe it takes a village to keep our equine partners healthy and happy. I feel there is not enough collaboration in the equine world between Veterinarians, Farriers, Dentists, Chiropractors and Therapists. I believe in spreading knowledge and sharing information so that each horse can have a better life. It is important for me that each one of my clients understands that each horse I treat becomes part of my herd; each horse gives as much as it receives. Therefore they are family. Find out more about Tami on Facebook or at https://elkayamequinetherapy.godaddysites.com/ Enjoy!
Team, I am so thrilled to be able to share this conversation with you today. I'm talking with Jim Masterson about the Masterson Method and how it is we can work with our horse to release underlying patterns of tension and promote optimal health, relaxation, and connection. Many of you will have heard me talk about this integrated bodywork practice before and it's something I'm utilizing on a near-daily basis together with my own horses. I've found the results to be fascinating and profound, and I really believe that the Masterson Method is something that all horse owners need to have in their knowledge bank. Over the course of our conversation we talk about: ⭐️ The what, how and why of the Masterson Method: How you can apply it to bring awareness to, relieve and release underlying patterns of tension with your horse ⭐️ The role of awareness and intuition in allowing for relaxation ⭐️ The signs of tension and signs of release: How to recognize both and create space for optimal release and balance We are also throwing down the challenge to you to watch the Bladder Meridian Video that Jim mentioned over the course of our talk (I'll share the link in the show notes of this episode) and try it out for yourself. Set up your phone, hit record and share your experiences with us! Make sure you tag us in so you can share the magic also! I hope you enjoy it!
I had the pleasure of beginning to learn about the Masterson Method from Katey Campbell of KC Equine this past summer at the Whole Horse Apprenticeship Retreat, and have wanted to have her on the podcast to share more since then! We sat down together at Firefly Farm to unpack this equine body work method that is growing at a rapid pace - we chatted about the underlying theories and physiology, how it allows the horse to have choice in every moment, why it is effective for so many horses, and why it is accessible for every horse owner to learn. We also got into some geeky anatomy territory as Katey shared about her recent eye-opening experience at an equine dissection. Katey Campbell at KCEquine Wellness is becoming a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner, she is also a certified Farrier, Equine Veterinary Assistant, Professional Groom and a passionate advocate for equine wellness, working in the industry for over 20 years. The Masterson Method® is a unique, integrated method of equine bodywork that that helps build trust and communication with the horse. It is an innovative form of equine massage that allows the horse to release deep, accumulated pain and tension in muscles and connective tissue. Horses are in the drivers seat of Katey's career, guiding her each step of the way by her undying and persistent need to be better for them. Katey's goal is to help more humans deepen their connection and understanding of their equine friends to foster a more harmonious relationship where the horse has a voice. She is making this happen through continual education, practice, and hard work that is then shared through bodywork and clinics with horses and their humans. The Masterson Method with Will Friday Will Friday is a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner. I ran across Will Friday at the Skills of the Rancho this summer. The Skills celebrates the tradition of the Californio Bridlehorse. I was walking around the stables when I saw this man doing what looked like a cross between chiropractic and massage on a horse in the breezeway. I stood and watched for a while and found the procedure fascinating. As Will skillfully tugged, pulled, and laid his fingers on the horse, I could see the horse relax. In our short conversation that day, Will said he was trying to let the horse release tension and soreness in his body using the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method, developed by horseman Jim Masterson, is a systematic way of releasing tension and soreness in horses. The procedure can last between 1 and 2 hours as the practitioner places fingers along the horse's body looking for areas of tension and soreness. I contacted Will at his company Performance Equine BodyWork. He invited me to a Parelli clinic that was being hosted by one of his clients at the 3L Ranch. Owners of the ranch, Maurice Thibault and Susan Nelson, invited me to come up and observe the clinic and watch Will work on some of their clinic horses. Both Maurice and Susan are 4-Star Parelli Professionals.
