Episode #19 - Intuition and Intellect

Compass Conversations Podcast

A book falls open on a page with a relevant, resonating message - a breadcrumb, perhaps. A heart-shaped leaf lands in your hand on your way into a job interview. You enter a room full of people and immediately feel a brace in your body. Are these signs or coincidences? How do you know?Today's conversation explores questions around intuition and intuitive learning. How can you tell the difference between intuition and intellect? How do they work together? How can you learn to feel and trust your intuition? How does your intuition occur to you - what does it feel like? Many of us are on a journey to recover and remember our intuition - as part of our institutional education, we are taught to suppress those feeling parts of us and to focus on producing, influencing, gaining, creating, selling. Education steers our awareness away from what is felt and toward what can be measured and defined and repeated. How do we integrate an education of the heart side-by-side with the intellect? We clearly need intellect to function - language serves; science serves; knowledge serves. But how do we weave these complimentary types of knowing together? Integration of our intellect and our intuition brings us into congruence, where we are no longer in conflict with ourselves. The resulting integrity and inner freedom open the doorway to curiosity without judgment and give us the courage to have a different conversation. Podcast ParticipantsKathy Price www.kathyprice.co.ukJessica White Plume  @jessica.white.plume.5Franzi and Tony  www.equisitwayoflife.horseGreta Matos www.curakuda.comKerri Lake - https://www.generateharmony.com/Music by Mark Rashid

In this discussion, we explore the flow state, how it feels, and the ancient gifts of self knowledge and awareness that it brings. When we tap into the deep, stabilizing rhythms of nature, we find stillness, peace, love, and coherence with all that surrounds us - like the slow, quiet, and timeless suspension we might feel in the depths of the ocean. It's easy to get complacent about our everyday lives - we get into our routines, lean on our habits, and our brains fill in the rest for us. What if we stepped out of the box society has put around us - the one that says you get your new car, the latest iPhone, the best job, and post it all on social media until you die? What if we actually experienced the world that is always around us? There is so much to explore and see and feel if you can bring your awareness to the present moment and find wonder in the ordinary. You can tune in on your front steps or travel thousands of miles away to find that relaxed, intense, focused concentration. And when you do, you may just discover your authentic self is waiting for you . . . waiting for you to own it. Finding that space where you recognize yourself and your connection to everyone and everything else - that is love. Disconnecting from the fears and doubts of the critical mind to recognize the rhythm of your being - that is love.Podcast ParticipantsWilliam Brown - https://palmandlotus.com/Christine Dickson - www.onthepathcoaching.netTerry Kuebler - www.terrykuebler.comShea Stewart - www.equinebalance.netKerri Lake - https://www.generateharmony.com/Music by Mark Rashid

What is it about our connection with horses that inspires so many to get curious about ourselves? Many of us place all of our focus on the horse - we put equipment on the horse, do things to the horse, try to get something from the horse, look for problems to fix within the horse. In all of this doing, we forget to include ourselves in the relationship. We may fall into dominating patterns, applying pressure to our horses and to ourselves without fully realizing our internal motivations, needs or blind spots. But there is a burgeoning community that is beginning to look at things differently. Today's episode begins with this acknowledgement, that humans are part of the relationship. Horses have become our great teachers. They open up big, beautiful windows into our souls, allowing us to peek in and remember the wisdom of awareness. When we release stories that serve fear and judgment, we create space for self-illumination. We become available for connections that serve the heart. What would happen if I let each person (or horse) be exactly who they are - without a story attached? What would happen if I gave that grace to myself? Join us as we explore these profound questions and follow the horse down a path of self illumination and awareness. If we are brave enough to look beneath our fears and see what's really there, we can unlock boundless joy, gratitude, and potential.Podcast Guests:Kathy Price - www.kathyprice.co.ukSuzi Clothier - www.zebswish.orgMatthias Geyson - www.matthiasgeysen.com/Leslie Desmond - www.lesliedesmond.comAmelia Nalli - www.amelianalliequinebodywork.comKerri Lake - https://www.generateharmony.com/Music by Mark Rashid

Episode #16 - Patience as a State of Being

Compass Conversations Podcast

Episode 16 explores the topic of patience. In today's kinetic, frenetic world, instant gratification can be very appealing - we want our food fast and our information even faster. We are in a hurry to become “experts” in areas of our interests and passions. But what do we lose when we rush? We may skip steps and miss pieces in our understanding, and we'll almost certainly diminish the wonder and awe that it takes to ask questions, fail, fall down, get back up, and finally break through. In essence, we lose the experience itself. What offers from the world do we miss when we rush? There is value in slowing down, getting quiet, and letting go of expectations. Patience is a state of being. Patience is a choice. It's internal, thriving in the space where time ceases to exist. We must be willing to surrender any expectation of the end result, to drop the destination mindset. The lesson itself is patience - and trust that we'll get where we're meant to be when we're meant to be there. When we find the ease in letting go and listening, we can release the tension of our insistent internal dialog and drop into a space of being. Are you ready to choose patience? To not allow the superficiality of life to pick us up and carry us away? To not be ruled by expectations? To slow down, breathe, and truly experience the world? We may not know where we'll be at the end of our journey, but we only need to know the next step. Podcast GuestsTerry Kuebler - https://www.terrykuebler.comCrissi McDonald - https://www.crissimcdonald.com/Greta Matos - https://quilaquina.com/Mark Rashid - https://www.markrashid.com/Steve Peters - https://horsebrainscience.info/Kerri Lake  - https://www.generateharmony.com/Music by Mark Rashid

What does it mean to love horses, but struggle to have the same empathy and love for people? Today's episode touches on a challenge that many in the horse profession face. People who love animals and care so deeply for the environment and the land have a tendency to grapple with conflicting feelings toward humanity, often seeing the very best and the very worst of people in the same day. Is it enough to truly and deeply love horses without feeling the same love for their human partners? Can we genuinely affect healing and change without falling deeply in love with the wholeness of the partnership as well as the individuals involved? When we step back from the separation of me from you, we put a crack in our armor to allow light to flow in (and out) - we connect. What would happen if we created a community of reciprocal care and balance - one without linear, transactional relationships, one where we buoy one another up? What does it mean to truly care? Presence. Orienting to the wisdom of the body instead of the busyness of our minds. Expanding our focus to resilience and regeneration instead of destruction and disdain. Embracing the wholeness of what's healthy, good, and right instead of fixating on what's wrong. Dropping the disempowering stories and the pity. This episode wanders and flows gently through two interconnected topics: risk and relationship. Do connection and relationship alter our perception of risk? When you truly know another being for who they genuinely are, beyond their labels, can you have more trust in that person or animal? Would you put your child on a “dangerous” off-the-track thoroughbred? Sleep outside in an area known to have mountain lions? Choose to live in an area constantly being reborn and reshaped by active volcanoes? Living in fear means always seeing risk; living in attunement means seeing truth. Our culture makes it difficult to open up - to find those tender places inside of us where we let ourselves explore our intuition, awareness, energy, and connection. More and more people are exploring these sides of themselves; however, even some of the most attuned humans still have an energetic governor that stops them from going too far when discomfort arises. For instance, many empathic individuals connect strongly with nature - animals, plants, the land. We tend to have difficulty managing our feelings about the way humanity treats the land, the way humanity treats animals (horses!). If we dig into this tendency to judge other humans, what do we find? Will we allow ourselves to see what's underneath? Anger? Pain? Sadness? Grief? Guilt for being human ourselves? What is the risk in rejecting others this way? Be sure to listen to this one all the way through - there is a beautiful and vulnerable epiphany toward the end that ties together the entire episode on risk and relationship with others and with the land.Podcast GuestsChris Adderson - www.forthehorse.comJillian Kreinbring - www.jillinakreinbringinspire.comJessica White Plume - @jessica.white.plume.5Greta Matos - www.kurakuda.comJoell Dunlap - www.squarepegfoundation.orgKerri Lake - www.generateharmony.comMusic by Mark Rashid - www.markrashid.com

This week on the podcast I was joined by holistic veterinarian Dr. Rachel Heart Bellini for her perspective and experience of the scope of vet med and the ways in which she's supplemented her education over the years in order to be of better service to horses.  We had a really interesting conversation about the gap and, at times, inconsistencies between body workers and veterinarians, and discussed possible solutions for bridging these professions in a way that optimizes care and treatment for our equines.  Whether you're an equine care provider or a horse owner, this episode will leave you with food for thought on the horse health and wellness industry, and hopefully some new ideas about assessing where to start when it comes to helping the horses in your life feel their best.  Heart Equine is owned by Rachel Heart Bellini DVM CVSMT CVA CVBM. Rachel is a holistic sports medicine veterinarian who uses her broad based education, years of experience and MOST importantly a large NETWORK to provide you with the absolute best whole horse solutions available. Rachel began her career on the racetrack, travelling the country with access to the best horses, trainers and veterinarians in the industry. That was followed up by a lengthy stint doing referral sport horse medicine clinic working for an industry pioneer in imaging and treatment of the cervical spine. She had access to the most up to date conventional diagnostic and treatment resources. After hitting a plateau in what she could offer she embarked on what has now been a fifteen year deep dive into multiple non conventional modalities. She has since acquired certifications in both traditional and balance method veterinary acupuncture and veterinary spinal manipulation therapy. Other certifications and trainings include many advanced manual therapy techniques, applied kinesiology, advanced neurology, human classical homeopathy, spiritual and anthroposophical medicine, postural rehabilitation, multiple ISELP courses and canine rehabilitation. Most recently her interests have turned to training techniques doing multiple clinics with industry leaders like Manolo Mendez, Mark Rashid and Celeste Lazaris. What she brings to her clients is a melding of all things with the goal of treating each partnership where they currently are and providing the guidance, support and therapies for long term health and soundness of our equine athletes.  Follow Rachel on her FB page, Heart Equine, and visit her website to learn more http://heartequine.com

How can we help fear become a recognizable stepping stone to curiosity and courage? Stepping into fear is a courageous act of embracing the unknown and acknowledging discomfort. While avoidance may provide temporary relief, it also limits our personal growth and development. When we face our fears, we often discover inner strength, resilience, and a sense of empowerment. In both the horse and human worlds, there is a misconception that we should avoid fear and discomfort at all costs - never pushing our boundaries or thresholds. Some corners of the equine world believe horses should never be mentally stressed at all…ever. But with this avoidance, we are handing over all of our power to fear; we are missing out on growth and fun because we are afraid of the slips and falls. What if, instead of judging our fears as “bad” or something we should resist or avoid, we begin to recognize them as opportunities for growth and expansion? When we see fear as part of a healthy, lifelong process of being human, we are able to fully experience the journey and see that there's really no destination - there's no “there” there.Immersion, rather than resistance, brings familiarity and recognition that is profoundly helpful in facing challenging times. We have the power to challenge our fears by asking ourselves questions about what else might be available to us.This episode dives deeply into topics around fear, resistance, avoidance, growth, the conscious and subconscious mind, self trust, embodiment, courage, curiosity, and radical acceptance. This episode is all about the synchronicities many of us recognize in our lives. Little (or big!) signs can feel like delivery of deeply meaningful messages for our path in life, or simply nudge us gently toward our gifts and passions. Sometimes the universe screams, other times, there are whispers. How can we learn to tune in and allow this wisdom, these responses to our deeply felt questions? How do we recognize them without forcing or grasping, ending up in dismay as they flit away just out of reach? When we are open to meaning however it may present itself, we allow ourselves to grow and evolve into who we are in this moment. But what happens when the conversation stops? When we are no longer feeling the guidance coming through? In some cases, an absence of signs may simply mean to “stay” with what we are doing right now. Other times, we may need to reorient our reception. When we look for signs and have an expectation around how they may arrive, we may unintentionally blind ourselves to how the conversation has changed and evolved, missing the conservation that is still there. Perhaps we just need to face it a little differently. These times where we lose the signal may feel extremely challenging to the individual experiencing it - like an abandonment and loss of direction, full of grief and confusion. This is where we have a collective responsibility to help and hold one another through these struggles. Many have lost a type of ritual in our culture that highly values individual responsibility. Conversations like this one are a tiny step toward re-establishing and normalizing those connections and relationships, where being seen and understood in reciprocity opens doors we never knew existed within ourselves.Podcast Guests:Sarah Schlote - www.equusoma.comChristine Dickson - www.onthepathcoaching.netJane Pike - confidentrider.onlineJessica White Plume - www.facebook.com/jessica.whiteplume.5/Kerri Lake - www.kerrilake.comMusic by Mark Rashid (markrashid.com)

This episode was fun for all of us. . . The word “energy” means a lot of different things to different people. In today's episode, we explore how each of us uses energy in our work and in our teaching. Some of us interact with energy and observe what changes physically; others work with what's tangible and observe what shifts energetically. When we shift matter, energy changes; when we shift energy, matter changes – in the end, are we really approaching our work so differently? Some see everything as energy, with no demarcation between people, animals, and objects other than a difference in our vibrational frequencies. Energy is information. Energy is the space between two beings - the place we enter while being totally open to receiving, to greeting. Energy is connection and intent, first to the self, then to others. Energy is creating an opening to allow connection. It's something that must be allowed through openness and felt through awareness. Energy is the existence of movement; awareness of energy is perception and consciousness. Energy is in the integrity of your request. Energy is felt – with your horse, what does it feel like to move from a walk up into a trot? Is it fast, slow, smooth, abrupt, sticky? What if you put that feel into your body? Horses feel and understand this. The commonality in everyone's experiences and definitions of energy is that we're pointing to something that is experienced or felt or sensed, which is different from thinking with the mind. Horses give us the amazing opportunity to use this ability like a language – to remember a part of us many have forgotten.  In this episode: Mark Rashid - www.markrashid.comBarbra Schulte - www.barbraschulte.comKathy Price - www.kathyprice.co.uk Chris Adderson - www.forthehorse.comSukie Baxter - http://wholebodyrevolution.com/about/Music by Mark Rashid

Episode #7 explores the challenging, beautiful, and mysterious topics of death and grief. Guests on the podcast share their experiences through the transitions of loved ones with vulnerability, gratitude, and curiosity. Many of us in western cultures are taught to fear death and dread grief. But when we have a deep knowing inside of us that death is not the end (and birth is not the beginning), there is less reason for fear, and sadness becomes a welcome reminder of love. What would happen if we were open to exploring the mystery of life after life? For those left behind in our bodies, grief is inevitable. Grief is when we miss the beauty of a being's physical presence. When we miss someone, we're missing the person that we knew here on earth, in their bodies. But where are they now? Can we still feel their presence? Does it feel the same? If it's different, how does it feel? Can we feel it all the time, or does it fade in and out? The more we are open to exploring these questions in our hearts and in our bodies, the more comfort we can take in knowing that we can learn how to connect in a different way. Join us as we explore the rhythms and cycles of life, death, grief, connection, and consciousness as a beautiful continuum.ParticipantsCarla Bauchmueller - www.theintuitiverider.comKerri Lake - www.generateharmony.comShea Stewart - www.equinebalance.netLeslie Desmond - www.lesliedesmond.comCrissi McDonald - www.crissimcdonald.comMusic by Mark Rashid

Different Paths To The Same PlaceIn this episode, we come together to explore questions about the ways horses and their people learn to better serve one another.. Starting with a touching and insightful journey into the experience of autism, we learn that there is healing in movement, relaxation through the breath, and connection through touch. Through tales of the group's varied experiences and perspectives, we find comfort and enlightenment in the realization that we're all talking about the same thing. Though we've each traveled very different paths and are experiencing truth through the distinct lenses of who we are, we've ended up in this same place, together. These truths are not something external to us - they are innately inside of each of us, just waiting for us to remember. While the dots are being connected, the conversation reveals a simple process of self-discovery of who we are in the world, what we stand for and how we organically bond with one another in the interspecies community.  Reminiscent of our ancestors and the ways the hunter-gathers prioritized connection with nature as a gateway to growth, well-being and harmony. Are you open to receiving the beautiful gift of movement that your horse offers? That you can also create just by going for a walk? How can movement calm the nervous system, open the lines of communication, and stimulate learning and social interaction? How can breathing and releasing tension in your hips and legs improve your connection with your horse? Is it possible to rewire our brains and nervous systems to function in a more healthful state? Is it possible to harmonize seemingly disparate ideologies, like ancient indigenous wisdom and modern neuroscience? Are you excited when pieces of “the answer” trickle in, even when you're yet unsure of the question? These conversations, in their absence of judgment and appreciation of inquiry, nurture an openness and curiosity in all of us. This is Episode 14 of Season Three. And in it, we give Wise Ass Wallace the mic again to talk about two juicy topics: helmets and colt starting competitions. Wise Ass got some help from the likes of Mark Rashid and Amy Skinner on the colt starting bit. And around helmets, he had some communication with the board of the Best Horse Practices Summit. WiseAss is having his day because of what Jec and I see as a troubling trend we are in the horse world.  There seems to be an increased focus on what we're calling the warm and fuzzies. We define the warm and fuzzies as strategies, practices, ideas, methods, and proclamations that may indeed serve the human and her need to feel connected and in a relationship, but don't serve the horse. Or, even worse, they confuse or neglect the horse. We sometimes see this audience sucked into the belief that they are making real connection and real progress with their horses. The reality looks a whole lot different; the horse is left in the dark and the so-called journey is nefarious at best. The result is a whole lot of sanctimonious feel-good sessions among this population of warm and fuzzy followers. How is the horse helped and what's getting accomplished? We are not sure. WiseAssWallace is a long-time, beloved guest columnist for Cayuse Communications. From his pasture in southwestern Colorado, he's on a quest to improve horse-human connections and make lives better for his fellow equines. WiseAssWallace has a series of videos and articles which we will link to in the show notes. In this episode, we're featuring two short pasture monologues. WiseAss has an entire library of recordings, videos, and articles. We'll link to them in the show notes. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds.  Forage is chopped, packaged hay. Sometimes it's alfalfa, sometimes timothy, sometimes blended, and sometimes with a touch of molasses. Always scrumptious. Interview with Crissi McDonald and Mark Rashid.I'm so excited! I asked Crissi a while ago if she would like to join me for a chat. She's been so busy with clinics and travel so it wasn't easy to fix a date but I'm happy to confirm we've finally recorded our session. As an added bonus, Mark kindly agreed to join us both as a guest too . . . how lovely is that! Two wonderful very successful individuals in their own right.I was so looking forward to chatting with Crissi and Mark and I wasn't disappointed. Crissi and Mark brought both knowledge and laughter to our conversation and they were happy to answer a few questions from the viewers who joined the live too.Two very special guests who are not only down to earth but also have a wealth of knowledge individually, as well as combined. So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this episode. Crissie McDonald.Growing up she was most motivated when the work she did would earn her time with horses: lessons, mucking stalls in trade for a ride on a friend's horse, babysitting to earn enough money for lessons, seeking out and finding horses where ever she could. Little did she know that all this time spent doing work would also be teaching her as well.  She was certified as an instructor through the CHA when she was twenty and got her first horse at twenty-four years old. Three more followed within two years. She's had the pleasure to participate in western riding, working cattle, leading trail rides, managing large herds, showing in Hunt Seat Equitation and Dressage, taking jumping lessons, and has spent over thirty years working with many different breeds of horses and people from all over the world, as well as having the opportunity to learn from some of the horse industry's top leaders in our current understanding of humane horse practices. Crissi enjoys teaching at clinics with her husband Mark Rashid. She's a certified Masterson Method® equine bodyworker since 2017 and is also an instructor for the Masterson two-day Beyond Horse Massage workshops. Crissi is the author of three books, two about the human/equine bond. Her other book, North to Home, is a fiction novel.Mark Rashid.Mark Rashid is an internationally known author and horseman known for his ability to understand the horse's point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Mark's clinics are structured as one-on-one work with horses and riders and are immensely popular with people around the world. When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses. After years of practice, he has earned a third degree black belt in Yoshinkan aikido and now teaches the “way of harmony” in the local dojo as well as in his Aikido for Horseman workshops, which are known also by the name of “Aibado.”https://crissimcdonald.comhttps://www.markrashid.comhttps://www.facebook.com/consideringthehors Support the showVideo version (alongside applicable podcasts) can be viewed on facebook and YouTube.https://www.facebook.com/equinevoices.co.ukhttps://www.youtube.com/@equinevoicesukhttps://www.instagram.com/equinevoices.uk

“It's an internal softness that you take with you in everything that you do”   Horsemanship Breakthroughs Podcast Episode 40: Internal softness, Martial Arts, and ‘Horses Aren't People' with Mark Rashid   Mark Rashid is an internationally known author and horseman known for his ability to understand the horse's point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force.    He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say.    Mark's clinics are structured as one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world.   When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses.    Mark worked full-time on ranches for many years gathering herds, managing stock, and training horses. When time permits, he still enjoys working on ranches near his home in Colorado as well as playing guitar professionally with his friends.   Mark is the author of fourteen books, with his latest titled ‘for the love of the horse'   *********   How would you like to discover a deeper connection & communication with your horse? Building Rider Confidence   Samantha Shanks-Husbands knows the importance of rider confidence. Once a rider loses confidence, especially an older rider, it is extremely difficult to get it back. Samantha works with equestrians of all ages and skill levels. Her techniques help riders focus on what is important. Breathing is especially important in her program. Samantha feels that proper breathing can lead to a calmer horse as well as relax a nervous rider. Another technique she uses is creative visualization. Seeing the outcome of your ride in your mind's eye, before the ride even occurs, can improve a rider's confidence. Another key to building rider confidence, Samantha believes, is groundwork. Working with your horse from the ground allows you to get to know and build a bond with your horse. Samantha talks about not being in a hurry to get on your horse if you are not a confident rider. Two of the influences Samantha credits for her interest are Mark Rashid and Philippa Unwin   Links Heard on This Episode Samantha's Website Contact Sam via email: sam@preparetowin.co.uk if you would like to book a free chat: go.preparetowin.co.uk/initial Samantha's Facebook Page Video for the Confident Rider Course Welcome to Our New Sponsor EcoGold Saddle Pads       Join Us on this Journey We want you to be a part of the show. You may even find the episode where I was a guest on their podcast talking about my life with horses and how this podcast and the conscious horse movement came about. In this episode I spoke with Mark Langley from Equine Ability. Mark is a man who grew up with horses and like so many from this podcast, started to question the training methods he had learned while travelling overseas. He saw a lot of push button horses that were shut down and he got curious as the driving pressure seemed to be shutting them down. And as happens so many times when you begin to question things, he was led to books written by Mark Rashid who gave him permission to take a different direction. He changed his main training method to “How can I help?” he realised that like Tom Dorrance said, a horse follows a feel not getting chased by it and his new way of training was born. It’s really interesting to hear that Mark began to see more shut down horses than ever when he started hosting clinics. We had a great conversation about shut down horses and he gives a lot of tips and examples and a lot of things to think about. And he made a great point, it’s us that shuts down horses, not pressure.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Mark Rashid is an internationally acclaimed trainer, clinician, and prolific author, renowned for taking the guesswork out of communicating with our horses. His ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force is unmatched.   Mark began working with horses at age 10, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. This figure is featured in many of his books, credited for teaching Mark a great deal about horses and laying the foundation for him to becoming a more enlightened horseman. Over 50 years later, Mark is recognized around the world for his horse-centric training philosophies, defined by quiet determination and working with, not against, the horse. A former ranch hand with experience gathering herds and managing stock, Mark now devotes most of his time to teaching and working one-on-one at clinics to improve horse and rider partnerships. Mark’s ability to understand the horse’s point of view allows him to solve many issues without the use of force. Mark’s approach to training has been heavily influenced by his study of Yoshinkan Aikido, a Japanese martial art. Aikido, which translates to “the way of harmony,” is founded on the concept of bringing even the most difficult or dangerous situation to a harmonious conclusion. Mark, who has earned a second degree blackbelt, uses the core principles of Aikido in his daily horsemanship, looking for quiet ways to blend with a horse’s energy in order to help the horse understand what is being asked of them. Mark teaches aikido for horsemen through his Aibado workshops, offered around the world. Based in Estes Park, Colorado, when he is not on the road Mark enjoys spending time with his family and playing music. A prolific author, he has written 14 books, including one novel, and has released two music CDs.   Tune in to this week’s episode to hear all of Mark’s insights on becoming a better horseman, what his experiences with horses have taught him, how he has shifted the paradigm of the “problem horse” through his teachings, how to continually improve your relationship with your horse, and why demonstration can often be a much more powerful teacher than words.   Topics of Discussion: [:25] About today’s guest, Mark Rashid. [:54] How did the “old man” (a figure noted in many of Mark’s books) guide Mark in developing his own training program in the early days? And how has Mark’s approach evolved over the years? [4:50] Why demonstration can be a more powerful teacher than using words. [10:50] Mark speaks about his work with rehabilitation work and training mustangs. [20:08] Mark explains the concept of being a “passive leader” and how to apply the best qualities of being a passive leader in working with our horses. He also provides some fantastic examples. [28:45] Mark speaks about how his experiences with horses have taught him a great deal about people, how martial arts improved his horsemanship, and how to truly connect with horses. [37:16] Mark speaks more about the martial arts, aikido, and how it improved his horsemanship. [43:08] How Mark shifts the paradigm of the “problem horse” in his book, Finding the Missed Path: The Art of Restarting Horses. [55:00] Mark highlights some things all horse owners seem to be doing universally that we should improve upon. [59:35] How can we improve our relationships with our horses? It not only helps with a horse’s overall wellness, but it also improves the communication and relationship between a horse and their rider.    Jim has applied his method of equine massage on behalf of the U.S. Equestrian Team’s Endurance Team and for horses competing in FEI World Cup, Pan American, and World Games competitions. He has also worked on equine competitors on the U.S. Hunter-Jumper Show circuit, including top events such as the USEF and Maclay Medal series, and FEI Grand Prix, Nation’s Cup, Pan American, and World Cup jumping events. And Jim has helped members of the USET Singles Driving Team and of the USET Jumping team.    An international clinician, Jim has presented to large crowds of enthusiastic horse owners around the world, including the Equitana Asia Pacific and Equine Affaire equine conventions and Your Horse Live event in the UK.   In this week’s episode, Elise and Jim discuss the Masterson Method in detail and some of the most significant results it brings. He shares many details about the “magic” and science behind the method, how anyone can incorporate it in their own routine, and how to become officially certified. Episode 2| Playing 4-Square: The 4 ways to reinforce or punish your horse. This week I look into the 4 quadrants of reinforcement and punishment. I scrutinise each quadrant and explain how it can be applied to your horse for good, bad or otherwise. I also highlight some of the key influences I draw my knowledge from (you can find their info below). -- Mark Rashid has authored so many books it's not funny. Recently I've been sinking my teeth into 'Horsemanship Through Life' which not only talks about horsemanship and his life but also how we can all apply his approach to our own practice. I'm now reading another one of his books 'Nature in Horsemanship'. His books are really amazing for not only understanding how horsemanship concepts are applied but also for coming to your own conclusions by looking inwards at your beliefs. Jill Treece from Jet Equi Theory and author of the Equine in Theory podcast has been a favourite of mine for a while and when she started her journey on Positive Reinforcement, I was able to come along with her through her engaging videos and now highly addictive podcast. She talks about her personal experiences with dealing with her troubled horse Zoe and how +R has shaped a new found change. Adele Shaw is the mastermind behind The Willing Equine and is so knowledgable when it comes to understanding horses and applying +R. She is such a wealth of knowledge and her podcast has been a big motivator for me to do the same. -- Follow me! On this episode you will hear from Elaine Heney from Grey Pony Films.Elaine has grown up with horses in Ireland and is lucky that her Father has a gentle hand, however it was on her travels around the world that her horsemanship changed forever, when in New Zealand Elaine saw a horse being ridden bareback with a single rein. It’s the old saying you can’t be what you can’t see.Once Elaine’s eyes were opened to this new way of being there was no going back for her, she then travelled to Australia and once home in Ireland she travelled to the UK to find a new way to train her horses.Elaine is a natural go getter in the world. She doesn’t seem to believe in can’t, she sees an opportunity and says yes, or makes a suggestion herself, and then figures out what has to happen next.Elaine is also an entrepreneur, she is the CEO of her company Chocolate Lab Aps. She has written 4 books, 3 of them on horses and horsemanship, one is called Ozzie The Story of a young Horse, it’s about her grey pony that she named after her journey in Australia and learning from Australian trainers, I've just read it and it's a lovely journey of how to train a problem horse. You can find these books on Amazon. So it’s absolutely no surprise to me that after being involved with a Mark Rashid movie in the US, she decided to teach herself how to become a movie maker. The Mark Rashid movie, Out of the Wild, which Elaine was the Executive producer, won the Directors Choice Award at the 2016 EQUUS Film Festival in New York.Elaine then went on to make a short film about Steve Halfpenny from Light Hands Equitation in South Australia. This film has been selected for 10 international film festivals, and won 11 awards, including best director, best cinematography and best documentary. The next natural step for Elaine was to make a feature length film about Steve Halfpenny, this film called Steve Halfpenny, Light Hands Equitation has just been released. I watched the film and it is beautifully done. Steve is a gentle and kind man with horses and the movie gives you a real sense of the type of horsemanship he does and how he was worked long and hard to make the world a better place for horses. With this movie Elaine has done her mentor proud.Elaine has now decided to expand her film making skills to incorporate anyone who is working with horses in an extraordinary way. She is still taking applications, you will hear more about this in the interview so sit back and enjoy this incredible woman. To connect with Elaine you can go to her website or Facebook Page.
