Cut the Small Talk is a "barbershop talk" style podcast that discusses a wide range of topics including music, entrepreneurship, sports, and life.
In this next episode, I catch up with a friend, former law school classmate, and now published author, S. Mayumi Grigsby, to discuss her book, "EmpowHERed Health, Reforming a Dismissive Health Care System,” a book in which she explores her research and findings on the potential link between negative interactions with healthcare professionals and health inequity, while focusing on the experience of Black women in the U.S.In this episode, we also touch on themes such as the lack in sex education through Mayumi's personal health story and the stories of members of the LGBTQ+ community, perspectives from health care professionals themselves on health inequity, and the social injustice and violence that has been at the forefront of this year.IG: @empowheredhealthBuy "EmpowHERed Health" on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/EmpowHERed-Health-Reforming-Dismissive-System/dp/1636766269/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=empowhered+health&qid=1623895939&sr=8-3Target: https://www.target.com/p/empowhered-health-by-s-mayumi-umi-grigsby-paperback/-/A-83269954Barnes and Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/empowhered-health-s-mayumi-umi-grigsby/1138414451
Ever been in a rut? This past month and a half or so, I definitely have been. I haven't wanted to sing, create, work on my podcast, journal, mediate- nothing. I had this visceral need to let go of my regimented lifestyle that I thought was crucial to my newly found well-being - and the results were surprising. In this episode I discuss my thoughts on a concept I learned about called "Wintering" coined by writer, Katherine May. She describes our life "winters" as moments of retreat, and writes about ways we can gain power from rest and retreat. In this episode of Cut the Small Talk, I have a discussion with my sister, Shanon Maglente, on the recent hate crimes against the Asian community, implicit biases and microaggressions, the glorification of being "quiet" in Asian Culture, and more. Shanon is a writer for GoodHouseKeeping.com and recently wrote an article on the above topics called "Why Some Asian Americans Are Staying Silent About the Ongoing Hate Crimes." In today's episode I talk about self-love- what it means to me and how I practice it!
In my life, I've learned that while veering off course of our chosen paths might have been (and still is) discouraged, it’s often the pivots you make in life, and those rare opportunities that you just say “yes” to, that teach us the most about ourselves- what lights us up, what brings meaning to our lives, and how resilient we actually are. In this next episode of “Cut the Small Talk,” I catch up with an old college friend, Matt Pana, who continues to make successful pivots in his life that have led him to opportunities and careers that cater to both his passions and his desire for sustainability. To connect with Matt Pana, and to find his podcast and various other media head to: solo.to/mattpana
Many young professional adults today struggle with feeling like they are not worthy of their accomplishments, and can often live life in fear of being discovered as a "fraud" in different aspects of their lives- whether it's in their careers, in their relationships, etc. This phenomenon is known in the world of psychology as "Imposter Syndrome" and it's what I tackle in this next episode of Cut the Small Talk with two awesome women, Dr. Jenny Fagel and Dr. Kathleen Wang, the founders of the Grown Up Asian. The Grown Up Asian is a life coaching program geared to help Asian American women live up to the most authentic version of themselves, which was founded through their own search for purpose and their drive and passion to help others find theirs! To sign up for their free virtual workshop on "How to Crush Your Goals" that's scheduled for January 13th @ 5:30 pm PST/8:30 pm EST: https://nxw16bkt.pages.infusionsoft.net/Find Jenny and Kathleen on instagram: @TheGrownUpAsian

So it has been a crazy couple of months as our world has been shaken with political injustice in various aspects of our lives, and racial injustice illuminated through the Black Lives Matter movement. There is still so so much work to be done, and I hope we all continue to do that work every single day, not just online and in the media, but in our homes, in every difficult conversation with have with a friend or family and in every difficult realization we make about ourselves and the gaps in our understanding and knowledge about the struggles of those who don’t look like us.I hope we also find some light in these dark times, and hold on to those moments to build strength to show up genuinely and effectively when needed. Something that has brought light to my days was this conversation with @DJLola.K for the next episode of the #CutTheSmallTalkPodcast, where she discusses how she learned how to DJ in just 30 days, and how that small step turned into a DJ career that has been growing successfully for the past 2 years! This story brought me so much inspiration, and I know it will for others, so have a listen! KYM'S SOCIAL MEDIA! @djlola.k @ladies1stdjclub

I don’t know how it’s been for you guys, but for me, this season has been a wintry mix of highs and lows, with lots of bluesy blues and negative thoughts sprinkled in. What I’ve learned though, is that while we might feel alone in these dark moments, we certainly are not. In this new episode of my #cutthesmalltalkpodcast I talk to my friend Anna about how she maintains a positive mindset on a daily basis to combat the curveballs, both big and small, that life throws at her. I hope this encourages people to talk to one another when they are down. There’s simply nothing worse than feeling alone when you are sad- and we need to realize that though people may seem happy on the outside- you never really know what’s going on in their hearts and minds. So I challenge people today to #cutthesmalltalk and care for your friends today cause we need each other.
So it’s officially 2020, and that time of year where we find ourselves reflecting on the past 12 months, and thinking of concrete ways to improve ourselves for the next 12. But how many times do we let those goals fall by the wayside a couple months into the new year, after that initial spark of motivation starts to dim?In this episode of Cut The Small Talk, I have a conversation with my good friend Angel about how he made his goals a priority throughout this past year, what motivated him, and how he went about actually achieving all of them. So if you’re ready to get inspired, have a listen! To follow Angel on Instagram: @Arch.Angel.13

Listen and be inspired if you are looking to make a change!

Do you ever find yourself avoiding a certain topic, or changing the subject in a discussion because you're intimidated by your lack of knowledge in that area, and you're worried you'd have nothing worthwhile to contribute? Or do you find yourself immediately tuning out when people talk about things that are not immediately interesting to you, or that you cannot immediately relate to? I think many people do this to a certain extent, and I think that contributes to the lack of connection our generation seems to feel.In this episode, I talk about this phenomenon and tackle it myself by engaging in a conversation with my friend Brian about two musical artists- James Blake and Aesop Rock (not to be confused with A$AP Rocky) who knows way more about these artists (and music in general) than I do. Through this, I hope to encourage people to stop letting fear get in the way of having these conversations, and instead to use these opportunities to connect, and at the very least as a chance to learn a shit ton from your friends and strangers :) FIND BRIAN'S AMAZING WRITING AND MUSIC REVIEWS HERE: 1) "RateYourMusic" - https://rateyourmusic.com/~Kosa122) 93MillionMIlesAbove.blogspot.com 3) https://www.nextbop.com/brian-kiwanuka
Many young adults struggle with anxiety everyday, and yet very few talk about it. In this episode, in an effort to make anxiety and mental health something that we could talk to each other about more freely, I want to be vulnerable with you, and give you a glimpse of my personal struggle with anxiety, and how I've learned to manage and live with it throughout the years.
