On this episode, the guys started without even realizing the cameras were on. They caught themselves talking about things they usually discuss when women aren't around. They talked about being a man for your woman when another man tries to make a move, and what they would do in those situations afterward. They also discussed how women's culture has changed over the generations. The episode then shifted to a hip-hop debate. They discussed the recent backlash Lil Yachty faced for dissing the late George Floyd, who died at the hands of a police officer a couple of years ago. They also talked about who was a better lyricist between TI and Young Joe, and whether TI gets overlooked. They discussed whether 2chainz is in the conversation of one of the best lyricists from Atlanta. They also spoke about Ludacris's music, his decline in hip-hop, and Gucci Mane's underrated lyricism from Atlanta. They then moved on to discussing whether Shedeur Sanders should be elevated in the depth chart in Cleveland, and why Joe Flacco was named the starter. They talked about NBA YoungBoy's recent album, Deshawn, which only sold 11,000 copies in its first week. They then delved into the topic of NBA super teams and what makes a team one. They concluded with a brief greatest of all time debate about Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan. https://www.youtube.com/c/BadSpeakersTV https://www.instagram.com/badspeakerspodcast https://www.tiktok.com/@badspeakerspodcast https://twitter.com/BadSpeakers https://www.facebook.com/badspeakerspodcast

Under the federal Death in Custody Reporting Act, anyone who dies in law enforcement custody must be reported to the Department of Justice. A Marshall Project investigation into the data found that many in-custody deaths are reported inaccurately to the federal government, or not reported at all. One of many deaths that was reported inaccurately was George Floyd's. Marshall Project reporters Anna Flagg and Ilica Mahajan worked on this story and joined Minnesota Now to share more.
Join Dominic Carter for a sharp dissection of the chaos engulfing New York City, triggered by the mass shooting at the Taste of the City hookah lounge in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, leaving three dead and nine wounded in a likely gang-related attack. Dominic fiercely questions how "progressive politics" and the controversial disbanding of the NYPD's Street Crime Unit have fueled rising gun violence, drawing parallels to similar incidents nationwide. He critically assesses Mayor-elect Mandani's impending leadership, highlighting his perceived inaction on crime and controversial policing stances, as well as the societal impact of "cancel culture," Black Lives Matter, and the veneration of George Floyd. The episode features urgent calls from listeners for parental accountability and considers the growing plea for President Trump to intervene with federal law enforcement or the National Guard to restore order, as seen in Washington D.C., offering a no-holds-barred look at the complex challenges facing urban America. August marks Black Philanthropy Month, a vital initiative launched in 2011 to champion funding equity and uplift philanthropic efforts within communities of African descent. This focus is more critical than ever, as the percentage of funding directed towards Black charities has decreased by over 30% since the surge in giving that followed George Floyd's death. In Part One of this two-part series, we'll dive into the fundamentals of philanthropy from the perspective of non-profit leaders. We'll explore the "5 T's of philanthropy" and discuss effective funding strategies designed to build a sustainable organization. You'll also get an introduction to the Minnesota Black Collective Foundation.

The summer of 2020 was one of the most explosive periods of recent memory — with pandemic lockdowns, the death of George Floyd, nationwide protests and riots, and workplace purges and online mobbings. And yet, so much of what went on has now been forgotten. In his new book, our guest on the program today encourages us to take a good, hard look at the insanity of those months, and how they shaped the era we're now living through.Thomas Chatterton Williams is a staff writer at The Atlantic. His latest book, out this week, is Summer of Our Discontent: The Age of Certainty and the Demise of Discourse. You can find Tara Henley on Twitter at @TaraRHenley, and on Substack at tarahenley.substack.com

The film follows Joaquin Phoenix as Joe Cross, the sheriff of Eddington, NM who - frustrated by the state's mask mandates in early 2020 - decides to run for mayor to depose the incumbent Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), a boilerplate liberal looking to move the town into the future by granting subsidies to a tech company attempting to build a data center at the edge of town. The film also traces the various conflicts that erupts as the era's wave of Black Lives Matter protests (following the murder of George Floyd) run up against the sheriff's department and the competing ideologies of the townsfolk, all emboldened by the hypermediated, isolated existences that defined the pandemic. We beging by addressing the film's politics, rejecting criticisms of the film as "centrist" or evincing a "both sides are bad" mentality, instead revealing the fundamental retreat of material politics as the defining order of the 2020s. Then, we discuss the film as western, how it embraces the lineage of John Ford, and how its world of localized, independent vacuums of internet-fed ideology suggest a collapse of the dialectic. Finally, we look at what the movie has to say about Big Tech, the victims of capitalism, and its (quite cynical) read on where America all headed.Read Alex on Eddington at More Like Shit StackRead Ed Berger on Eddington at Reciprocal Contradicton 2.0....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani is walking back criticisms he leveled at the NYPD in 2020 during the George Floyd protests. Plus, Gov. Hochul says she's open to charging more teenagers as adults following an uptick in youth defendants committing more serious crimes. Also, officials say they're installing barriers and sand-filled barrels in front of pedestrian crossings at Canal Street and Bowery. And finally, the way you walk may soon be enough to reveal your identity through gait recognition technology.

Today - John discusses Trump ordering the US National Parks Service to reinstall a statue of Confederate military officer Albert Pike in Washington, DC. Protestors tore it down in the wake of the George Floyd protests against police brutality and racial injustice on Juneteenth in 2020. He also talks about the latest in the Texas gerrymandering debacle with Governor Greg Abbott saying democrats have until Friday to return to the statehouse or face expulsion. More than 51 Democratic members of the Texas House left the state, aiming to deny the chamber a quorum and prevent passage of the proposed gerrymandered Republican map before a scheduled floor vote. Then, he chats with Professor Corey Brettschneider about the supreme court paving the way for Texas's gerrymandering mess and the overuse of the shadow docket in the Supreme Court to hide reasoning behind the court's decisions. These decisions are typically made with limited briefing, no oral argument, and often without full explanation, leading to concerns about transparency and the potential impact on legal precedent. Then, John welcomes back Rev. Barry Lynn who is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and served as the executive director for Americans United for the Separation of Church and State until his retirement in 2017. They talk about Texas gerrymandering, Ghislaine Maxwell, and churches now being able to endorse candidates. Then finally, he plays clips from the recent Nebraska town hall where Republican congressman Mike Flood was booed by constituents. Earlier this year, we invited the filmmakers behind Cycle to the podcast for a deeper look at their document about police violence in America. In the months since, Cycle won Best Feature Documentary at the Brooklyn Film Festival and is now gearing up for more screenings and more film festivals around Wisconsin and beyond. So it seemed like a good time to revisit our conversation with directors Laura Dyan Kezman and William Howell. Enjoy. *****On this episode, Dori welcomes some very special guests to talk about a very important film: Cycle.More than five years in the making, Cycle takes an unflinching look at the patterns behind police violence in America through the story of Ty'rese West, an 18-year-old from Racine who was shot and killed by Mount Pleasant police officer Eric Giese in 2019 after being stopped for riding a bicycle without a headlight.Joining the podcast to talk about their film — and their deep connections to it — are directors Laura Dyan Kezman and William Howell, both of whom are from Racine. Uniquely Milwaukee host Kim Shine also sits in for this one as the quartet talk about: Howell's personal connection to West's family and the Racine community, which helped build trust for the deeply personal footage in the film. The challenging process of obtaining public information from authorities. How the death of George Floyd in 2020 reframed their work. Who holds power in the criminal justice system, particularly the District Attorney. The challenges of and potential for filmmaking in Wisconsin. The hope that Cycle serves as a catalyst and inspires viewers to push social justice forward. *****Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Co.

We're back from hiatus with an incredible conversation featuring Roshni Nedungadi — co-founder, founding partner, and Chief Research Officer of HIT Strategies. Roshni is one of the sharpest minds in political research today, with a career built on elevating the voices of communities too often ignored in traditional polling: people of color, young voters, and low-propensity voters. In this episode, we talk about how she found her path from Wisconsin politics to running her own firm in D.C., why representation in research matters, and what it means to build something new in a field that's still overwhelmingly white and male. If you've ever questioned how change actually happens behind the scenes in politics — this is the episode for you.00:01:00 – Meet Roshni: a polling expert and co-founder of HIT Strategies00:03:00 – The 2008 election, student protests, and how political activism shaped her early career00:08:00 – From legislative aide to data analyst: building technical skills through direct mail and targeting00:12:00 – The power of representation: working for a Black-led firm and learning to take up space00:14:00 – How she and co-founder Terrance Woodbury started HIT Strategies00:15:00 – The 2016 election, youth voters, and the warning signs that went ignored00:18:00 – Starting a firm as women and people of color in a predominantly white industry00:20:00 – The role her mother played in modeling entrepreneurship and offering support00:22:00 – Breaking into political consulting and navigating gatekeeping in the industry00:23:30 – Building early momentum with the Steyer campaign and work on Black and Latinx voters00:24:30 – Responding to the moment: 2020, George Floyd, and a demand for deeper polling00:25:30 – Roshni's current focus: polling young women, AAPI voters, and reproductive justice00:26:30 – The gaps in AAPI polling — and why representation in data still matters00:28:00 – What it means to scale while staying rooted in community00:29:30 – Advice for BIPOC folks trying to break into politics, research, or entrepreneurship00:33:00 – Final reflections on pushing the industry forward and showing up with authenticityPolling isn't just about numbers — it's about who gets seen, whose voice counts, and how decisions get made. Roshni's work challenges the old norms of political research by centering voters that traditional firms often overlook. This conversation is a masterclass in how to build power through data, strategy, and representation — and a must-listen for anyone curious about the future of politics.Roshni is a founding partner and chief research officer of HIT Strategies. Roshni has led expansive, multi-phase research projects exploring how people across the United States feel about abortion access, gun control, mass incarceration, and other important issues on behalf of advocacy leaders such as Everytown for Gun Safety, NARAL, and Vera Institute for Justice. Roshni's research seeks to find nuance in how Americans, particularly BIPOC individuals and low-propensity voters, conceptualize these issues at a time where division and partisanship run rampant. Roshni's research on behalf of HIT Strategies ultimately is meant to lift up the voices of marginalized communities in the United States, one of the fastest-growing and oft-ignored voting blocks in American politics. https://hitstrat.com/our-team/Instagram: @hitstrategies If you enjoyed the show and you...
Hey, Scorekeepers! On our off weeks for the next few months, we're revisiting ART CLASS, the 12-episode series all about arts and arts education that we released last year. We hope you enjoy this stroll down memory lane!--This episode was originally released on January 30, 2024.Welcome back, Classmates! And thank you so much for joining us for episode 2 of Lincoln Center's ART CLASS! This week is all about preserving the legacy of Black art and culture, specifically Black music. COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd in 2020 brought about a racial reckoning here in the US, the likes of which hadn't been seen in decades. In 2024, however, with the conservative backlash against progressive ideals and initiatives like Critical Race Theory and DEI gaining momentum in many places, it seems the pendulum has swung hard back in the other direction. This week, we talk with two scholars and artists working tirelessly to keep Black stories, Black culture, and Black art at the forefront of the national imagination. First, we chat with Dr. Michael C. Mason, PhD the first chair of the new Africana Studies Department at the Berklee College of Music, all about the creation of this exciting new program at one of the most prestigious music schools in the country (0:26:37). And later, Paige sits down with Christopher Fuller, the creator of the Black Music Project, for the first installment of their series, Kinfolk (0:57:49). They talk all about how this invaluable repository of Black history and art came to be and make the case that the story of Black music is the story of American music. All that plus, the Morning Announcements with Emile (0:54:52) and a bit of Pure Black Joy (1:32:06) to get you through the rest of the week. James addresses Detroit's downfall, pinning it on a fatherhood famine where 80% of kids grow up without two parents. He blasts the city's $250 curfew fines as a Band-Aid on a broken leg, ignoring the real issue. He slams Mayor Mike Duggan for dodging the fatherhood crisis while chasing votes, warning that without real change, Detroit's headed for more chaos à la George Floyd's legacy. Introducing Credible Witness, a new podcast produced by Mark Labberton and the Rethinking Church Initiative. In this episode of Conversing, Mark features the full premiere episode of Credible Witness, and is joined by host Nikki Toyama-Szeto and historian Jemar Tisby. Exploring how Christian witness to the gospel of Christ has become compromised—and what might restore its credibility. Reflecting on five years of candid, challenging conversation among diverse Christian leaders during the wake of George Floyd's murder and rising Christian nationalism, the three discuss the soul-searching, disillusionment, and hope that emerged. Together, they examine the cultural fractures, theological tensions, and moral failures that have pushed many to extremes, elevating strident voices as an increased number of people to leave the church. They articulate the mission and vision of Credible Witness, testify to a persistent hope in Jesus and the power of honest community, face painful truths, and imagine a church that more truly reflects the love, justice, and mercy of God. Key Moments “We absolutely get that… but we're still on board with Jesus. And Jesus has always been with us and hasn't left us.” “This isn't about leaving Jesus. This is about following Jesus.” “We've got a better story to tell.” “It was the church that was putting the church at risk.” “The church has a reputation in the United States… and not a good one by and large.” About the Guests Nikki Toyama-Szeto is the host of Credible Witness, and is executive director of Christians for Social Action, equipping the church to pursue justice and follow Jesus in the tension of our times. Jemar Tisby is the author of The Color of Compromise and How to Fight Racism, and founder of The Witness: A Black Christian Collective. He is the host of Pass the Mic. Show Notes “This isn't about leaving Jesus. This is about following Jesus.” —Jemar Tisby Nikki introduces Credible Witness as a space for honest stories of faith amid moral complexity and social tension Mark recalls the origins of the conversation in summer 2020: COVID-19, George Floyd, church division, and racial injustice Jemar Tisby clarifies the mission for imagining a more credible Christian witness Nikki reflects on trust-building in a space that welcomed “tricky truths” and honesty without pretense The group's five-year journey begins as a short experiment but grows into a lasting community of deep discernment “We weren't trying to replicate any harm.” —Jemar Tisby The group names white Christian nationalism and silence on injustice as threats to the church's credibility Ephesians 2 and the power of “coming together of the unlikes” as a witness to the resurrection “It was the church that was putting the gospel at risk.” —Mark Labberton Nikki explains how church neutrality began to speak volumes: “Choosing silence was actually a loud voice.” Discussion on the failure of integrity: “Too many things in isolation” eroded credibility Jemar highlights story as central to public theology: “We've got a better story to tell.” The group wrestles with algorithmic distortion and toxic digital narratives shaping Christian identity “Not just message, but embodiment”: The church's credibility depends on lived ethics, not just theological claims Mark emphasizes self-examination: “Are we credible?” Dissonance and disagreement as gifts: “What kept people in the room was the gift of dissonance.” —Nikki Toyama-Szeto Jemar recalls moments of tension over how to prioritize justice issues while remaining unified in Christ The group's diversity as a deliberate strategy: different traditions, backgrounds, and responsibilities within the church Nikki names divine timing: the conversation is more urgent now than when it began “We're not all supposed to be the same... That's how everything gets covered.” —Jemar Tisby Mark frames the church's failure as internal implosion—not external threat “Why is the church seemingly so unchanged?” —Mark Labberton Nikki describes how marginalized voices carry wisdom for the way forward Jemar articulates the podcast's goal: a mirror and a window for listeners to see both themselves and the larger church Nikki closes with an invitation to slow down and listen generously: “Pull up a chair...” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.
In this explosive episode of The Clay Edwards Show, host Clay Edwards delivers unfiltered, no-holds-barred commentary on the hottest issues shaking America. Kicking off with a raw take on transparency in leadership and the fight against cancel culture, Clay dives deep into the spotlight on overlooked topics from Jackson, Mississippi, and beyond, exposing corruption and calling for real solutions in a broken system. Clay tackles the shocking mass shooting at NFL headquarters by 27-year-old former high school football player Shane Tumara, who blamed CTE despite never playing professionally. He unpacks the media's spin, questioning ties to Blackrock, pro-Palestine activism, and how hits to the head are being used to deflect from deeper motives. Drawing parallels to past controversies like George Floyd's death, Clay challenges narratives and demands accountability, emphasizing that reality must trump political bias. Shifting gears, Clay addresses a brutal hate crime in Cincinnati, where a roving gang viciously attacked innocent white attendees leaving a music festival, including a man stomped unconscious and a woman punched for checking on him. He highlights the media's silence, trends in urban violence, and why suburbs exist as safe havens. Featuring audio from Vice President JD Vance, who condemns the lawlessness and calls for prosecuting thugs to restore safety in American cities, Clay urges equal application of hate crime laws and criticizes excuses like poverty or provocation. He stresses situational awareness and the need for communities to speak out, echoing "silence is violence" from past movements. The episode also mourns the death of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, critiquing vile reactions from figures like a Florida school board chair who celebrated it as "one less MAGA in the world." Clay explores Hogan's past racist comments, his apology, and the hypocrisy in forgiveness, contrasting it with societal leniency toward violence in certain communities. He calls out "Black fatigue" and demands consistent consequences, while sharing his wrestling Mount Rushmore: Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock. Throughout, Clay shares personal stories, from birthday shoutouts to excitement for local boxing events featuring friends like Topher, Luke Greenlee, and Bubba Easterling on August 16th in Neshoba County. With fiery rants on stereotypes, victim culture, and the soul of America, this episode is a strap-in ride for truth-seekers tired of sugarcoated talk. In this episode, Breht sits down with Ahmed and Luisa - two members of the Democratic Socialists of America's National Political Committee and leaders within the Springs of Revolution Platform. With the August 2025 DSA Convention approaching, this episode dives into the growing struggle between the organization's revolutionary left and its more moderate, staff-driven tendencies. Representing a strategic coalition of rank-and-file organizers from across the country -including Red Star, Liberation Caucus, MUG, and Emerge - Springs of Revolution is fighting to remake DSA into a bottom-up, anti-imperialist, and internationally rooted revolutionary organization. From prioritizing local chapters and doubling their funding, to instituting anti-Zionist political commitments and unified electoral strategies, their platform directly challenges the right-wing of the organization and sets out a more radical vision for this evolving organization. We discuss what it means to build DSA into a revolutionary mass force, why Palestine is the “moral compass” of the left, the material lessons of recent uprisings like the George Floyd rebellion and Pro-Palestine Campus Uprisings, and how deep organizing is key to seizing future ruptures. If you're a delegate heading into convention, a DSA member on the fence, or an outsider wondering what the internal political battles of the U.S. left really look like, this episode is essential listening. Send us a textSheriff Joe Cross patrols a small New Mexico town where tension simmers beneath the surface. It's May 2020, and the pandemic has unleashed a torrent of fear, conspiracy, and mistrust that threatens to tear Eddington apart. When we meet Joaquin Phoenix's Sheriff Cross, he's a man grasping for control – of his town, his marriage to Emma Stone's increasingly distant wife, and the looming threat of COVID-19. His power struggle with Pedro Pascal's Mayor Ted Garcia initially plays as absurdist comedy, filled with mask debates and protocol disputes that feel simultaneously ridiculous and unnervingly familiar. But Aster isn't interested in simple pandemic nostalgia or pointed finger-wagging.As protests ignite following George Floyd's murder, the film transforms into something far more dangerous. Phoenix's fragile authority figure, obsessed with maintaining power he never truly possessed, descends into paranoia and violence. What follows is a white-knuckle thriller that examines how quickly social order can collapse when trust erodes and technology weaponizes our worst impulses.Aster's genius lies in refusing to choose sides. His unflinching camera examines everyone – from performative activists to conspiracy theorists, from power-hungry officials to corporate puppeteers. The result feels like a definitive artistic statement about America's fractured landscape, where phones replace six-shooters and the true villains might not be who we expect.Darius Khondji's breathtaking cinematography captures both the vast emptiness of the New Mexico desert and the claustrophobic tension of a community at war with itself. The performances, particularly Phoenix's slow-burning descent into madness, elevate this beyond typical genre exercises into something genuinely haunting.Eddington is that rare film that feels immediately essential – a time capsule created in the moment, yet with the clarity that usually comes only with distance. It leaves us with troubling questions about where we've been and where we're headed. Watch it now and be part of the conversation about one of the year's most provocative cinematic achievements.Support the show

“I'm personally desperate for art that at least attempts to grapple with whatever the hell is going on right now,” the writer-director Ari Aster tells Adam Howard, a senior producer of the Radio Hour. “ ‘Eddington' is a film about a bunch of people who . . . know that something's wrong. They just—nobody can agree on what that thing is.” Many of us would prefer to forget a fearful time like the spring and summer of 2020, but Aster is relentless about putting his characters and his audience in states of anxiety, whether in his horror films “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” or in the more genre-bending “Beau Is Afraid.” “Eddington,” his latest, is a neo-noir Western featuring a gun-toting, libertarian sheriff, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who confronts COVID, the George Floyd protests, and a mysterious A.I. data center that's being built in his county. It's like a hand grenade tossed into the traditional summer-movie season. The film is unapologetically political, but its satire doesn't spare either side of the aisle. “My concern,” Aster admits, “is that I don't know how much of a hunger people have anymore for anything controversial or challenging.”
