Adam Mizel Bio: Adam Mizel's journey from Wall Street to corporate leader to building a grassroots unity movement wasn't exactly planned. After a successful 30-year business career, from Morgan Stanley, to launching private equity firms and hedge funds, to starting and running public and private companies, he found himself screaming at the news during the chaotic days of May 2020. George Floyd had been murdered, the country was in the midst of a pandemic, politicians and pundits amped up the rhetoric and many of us felt that the fabric of the country was ripping apart. At that moment, his wife Taunya delivered the wake-up call: "No one's hearing you if you scream at the TV." That insight sparked his biggest epiphany yet—instead of just making another donation, Adam was going to DO SOMETHING about America's divisions. He did not have a more developed concept than that, but as a serial entrepreneur, Adam was confident he would figure it out. What happened next surprised even him. Doors started opening in ways they never had during his business career. Through a social justice task force formed with CMO leadership organization PTTOW, he met Ken Nwadike, Jr. (the "Free Hugs Guy"), who in turn introduced him to Sheriff Chris Swanson of Flint, Michigan. Chris made global headlines when 3.2 billion people watched as he and his officers took off their riot gear and marched arm-in-arm with George Floyd protesters on May 30, 2020. Flint was one of the few American cities that did not burn that night. Their instant connection led to the co-founding of US United in 2021 and together they have grown it into a movement for unity that is proving that Americans aren't as divided as politicians and media want us to believe.Today, US United has built a network of close to 100 sheriffs committed to bringing unity into their communities. They have reached thousands of families across the country through giving events like the Holiday Spectacular, broken people out of their bubbles with a unity pledge and national online conversations called 30 For US, and just completed a summer cross-country road trip documenting real stories of unity happening at the grassroots level. Derek Chauvin, the former Minnesota police officer wrongfully convicted in the death of life-long drug addict and criminal George Floyd, has yesterday filed an appeal for post-conviction relief with the state courts. The arguments for relief include, some never previously argued on appeal, include: (1) Chauvin's police officer superiors lied about his training to argue criminal intent, (2) The state medical experts used pseudo-science to fabricate claims that Chauvin caused Floyd's death;(3) The jury instructions were defective allowing an impermissible non-unanimous verdict of guilty.

Episode #438: Jonathan Crowley shares his journey as a practitioner and teacher in the Goenka Vipassana tradition, highlighting the conflicts that eventually led him to step away after 35 years of dedication. He describes his gradual disillusionment with the organization's rigidity, particularly its failure to address structural racism in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing—unlike many other spiritual organizations, which undertook meaningful changes. Alongside his wife, Jonathan wrote to the North American Acharyas, advocating for meaningful engagement on racial issues and emphasizing that the teachings of the Buddha support addressing social injustices. Their letter called for transparency, change, and inclusivity, yet received only two responses, one of which was completely dismissive, which further isolated them. Jonathan also questioned the tradition's claim that their Vipassana technique was the only method preserving the “pristine purity” of the Buddha's teachings: a very questionable claim, at best, which he feels fosters an environment resistant to change or critique. The emphasis on purity, combined with a fear of deviation from the prescribed path, discourageseven Senior Teachers from asking questions, voicing doubts or exploring new ideas. Jonathan felt that this rigidity ultimately hindered his spiritual growth. As he experienced deeper states of meditation, he realized the tradition's approach was too narrow, with no space for discussing experiences outside the standard teachings. This further compounded his sense of frustration and alienation. Leaving the tradition was painful for Jonathan, given his respect for Goenka and the community's significance in his life. He struggled with feelings of loss and confusion, recognizing that while the practice had transformed him, the organizational structure was now limiting his growth. Despite this, he maintains a deep appreciation for the tradition and Goenka, acknowledging their role in his spiritual journey while also embracing new paths in Dhamma that align with his continued evolution.“I am wanting to hold this deep reverence, appreciation, gratitude and a deep sense of benefit that I have received from Goenkaji and from the tradition; with a need to speak out and to be critical, and to hope that the organization will become a more open system and invite civil discourse and dialog and conversation and questioning, and not think that that's going to be a threat to the path of Dhamma.”

“We were really tired of the media narrative around Black men.” From that frustration, Darlene King-Turner – CEO & President of The Unity Collective – helped birth the National Black Men in Leadership Conference, now in its fifth year and returning to Huntington Place this December as a direct response to the murder of George Floyd and generations of distorted images of Black manhood. In this Detroit is Different episode, she traces her roots from Georgia and Alabama to the downriver 48217/Southwest Detroit corridor – a Black community of steelworkers, teachers, Black doctors, and midwives – and connects that history to today's environmental injustice, noting that those zip codes carry some of the state's highest cancer rates while being “forgotten when it's time for capital and funding.” Darlene walks us through being sent as a 17-year-old to a mostly white Christian college in the U.P. so she could “learn how America really operates,” then coming back to Wayne State in the early '90s as Africana Studies, Kente stoles, and Black graduation reshaped campus culture. From building Wayne RESA's first professional development and events department to crafting its first diversity strategy, she breaks down how “diversity brought people in the door, inclusion tried to make them feel like they belonged, but equity is what really shook the table,” and why equity isn't “taking something from you to give to someone else,” but giving people what they need to thrive. We unpack DEI's current backlash and Project 2025, why Black men still hold only 3.2% of leadership roles nationally, and why some are now afraid to even attend a conference with “Black” in the title, even as Darlene insists that “until Black men are in the boardrooms and the C-suites, this country will not grow in the way it needs to.” She frames this year's theme, The Power of Us, as both a call to action and an extension of the Civil Rights fight – from Detroit's African-centered education battles to today's reparations and racial equity work – making this episode a blueprint for how legacy Black Detroit is shaping the future of Black leadership and why loving on Black men in public is essential to the next chapter of our culture. AG Campbell has been a leader in the push back against the Trump administration having filed more than 40 lawsuits to halt some of their dangerous actions. She led a group of AG’s in a lawsuit to release SNAP funds during the shutdown, and she’s been fighting to preserve DEIA initiatives in MA schools, and protect immigrants here legally on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) who have been getting picked up by ICE. There’s a push in several red states to allow pregnant women to park in handicapped spaces. Sounds fine, right? To exist as a black male in America is to be perceived as a threat, where criminality is attributed by default and violence is justified from racial bias. This Saturday marks ten years since the fatal shooting of Jamar Clark.  On Nov. 15, 2015, the unarmed 24-year-old was shot during a confrontation with two Minneapolis police officers. He died the next day. In the weeks that followed, hundreds of people protested outside the Minneapolis 4th Precinct in Minneapolis — demanding the names of the officers and the release of any video. Protesters marched to the government center and shut down Interstate 94.  It was a level of activism that Minnesota hadn't seen before, building on the long despair and anger in Black communities following shootings of other unarmed Black men, here and elsewhere. And it set the stage for protests that followed the police killings of Philando Castile in 2016 and of George Floyd in 2020.  MPR News guest host Brandt Williams talks about how protests following Jamar Clark's death took shape and how they changed the public response to police shootings and policing. The officers said Clark reached for one of their guns during a confrontation outside a party. Some witnesses disputed that Clark reached for the officer's weapon. Minnesota law enforcement agencies are hiring an outside group to review the law enforcement response to the shooting deaths of state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the shootings of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.The after-action report by the International Association of Chiefs of Police will look at the 43 hours between the first 911 call and the gunman's arrest.Robert Davis is a retired police chief and led the after-action review of the city of Minneapolis' response to the unrest following George Floyd's murder. Robert now leads his own consulting firm doing the same type of work. He joined MPR News host Nina Moini to provide insight on the review.

It's Election Day across the state. Voters are selecting school board members, county commissioners and deciding other local races. In St. Paul, there's a mayoral election. Minneapolis voters also selecting a mayor today — and all 13 members of the City Council. Six candidates are facing off today over three seats on the Anoka-Hennepin school board, which oversees the state's largest school district. Two slates of candidates — one conservative and one progressive — are vying to claim those seats. Groups have poured nearly half a million dollars into the races, far outpacing normal spending for a down-ballot election. Dozens of Minnesota school districts are asking taxpayers to OK operating levies.Former Minneapolis police officer Tou Thao is returning to Minnesota.
