Fast Charge is a weekly show from the Tech Advisor team on all things phones (and sometimes other stuff too). Dom, Toddy, and the rest of the team will be here every week to run through the latest news and rumours for all things Android and iPhone, along with reviews, rants, and more.
Samsung has announced when it will launch its next flagship phones, and we think we know a lot about what to expect – plus Nothing has finally released the Phone (1) in the US (sort of) and Dom has gone hands-on with the Razer Edge handheld. First up, we're previewing the three Galaxy S23 phones, now confirmed to debut on 1 February. Extensive leaks have given us a pretty good idea of what to expect, with minimalist designs, camera upgrades, and a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 inside. Meanwhile, Nothing has begun selling the Phone (1) in the US half a year after it launched in the rest of the world. Well, kinda – this is officially a ‘beta membership' to test the phone's version of Android 13, but you have to pay $299 and they give you a phone, so it sounds a lot like putting it on sale to us. But is this something special or a raw deal for consumers? And finally, Dom has had the chance to try out the Snapdragon-powered, Android-running Razer Edge gaming handheld, and has his thoughts on the hardware ready ahead of the official US launch, which is now just a couple weeks away. And then a bit of sad news: this will be the final Fast Charge – for now at least. After 140 episodes it felt like the right time to retire the show, but we'll be sticking around on YouTube and making great videos as often as we can, so stay subscribed and keep an eye out for what's next. We're back, and the biggest tech trade show of the year is in full swing... but our main news has nothing to do with CES at all. On the other side of the planet from Vegas, OnePlus decided this busy week was the perfect time to reveal the OnePlus 11, its latest flagship phone - and confirm that a global launch is coming in February too. An 8 Gen 2, 100W charging, and upgraded cameras all sound good to us - so is OnePlus back to winning ways? After that we'll be chatting about a secret phone - one we're not allowed to reveal until the embargo conveniently lifts as the show starts. So stay tuned for that one. Finally, we're going to finish up with a discussion of the new Qi2 wireless charging standard - not as dry as it sounds thanks to the news that the new tech is quite directly based on Apple's MagSafe standard. Hopefully that won't make all the Android OEMs feel quite so bad about copying it. This podcast is produced by Foundry. It's the last episode of 2022, which of course means we're already stuck talking about the biggest launches of 2023. First up, Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro, its first two phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Throw in updated cameras and an overhauled design and you should have a pair of pretty promising flagships - so why aren't we all that enthused yet? We're more excited by the Oppo Find N2 and Find N2 Flip - especially the latter, as it's both Oppo's first flip phone and the first foldable it's launching internationally. But why isn't the regular Find N2 leaving China with it, and has Oppo done enough to unseat Samsung? And finally, it's only right that we turn to next year, throwing out some baseless predictions about what will happen to all things smartphone in 2023. This podcast is produced by Foundry. December has begun, the advent calendars are open, and Spotify Wrapped has taken over social media, which means we're ready to declare 2022 basically done with. It's been a big year for tech. We got our first 1-inch smartphone camera sensor, Apple began its first halting steps away from the notch, and there's even still time left for Elon to destroy Twitter for good. But what were the best, the worst, and the weirdest products to hit the market this year? Dom, Henry, and Lewis are ready to pick through the wreckage of the year and share their favourites - and more. This podcast is produced by Foundry. Welcome to our Black Friday safe space: you won't find any deals discussion here this week. Instead, we're focussed on a trio of major launches from Vivo, Honor, and Oppo. First up, Vivo unveiled its X90 series, including the debuts of both the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 - a dual debut we've not seen happen before. Beyond the chips the big upgrades are to the camera, with the top Pro+ model using the same 1in IMX989 camera sensor we saw on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. If Vivo's track record is anything to go by, this might just be the new best camera in any phone right now. Honor had a big week too, revealing its second-gen Magic Vs foldable alongside the more traditional Honor 80 range. The Vs (pronounced vee-ess, not the way you want to say it) is confirmed to get a global launch next year, and boasts a super-slim design that closes completely flat - still not a given in foldable phones. It only runs the slightly older Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 rather than the latest 8 Gen 2, but powerful cameras and a sleek design could make this Samsung's first real competition worldwide. Finally, Oppo has also taken advantage of what it probably thought would be a quiet week for phone launches to reveal the Oppo Reno 9 range. The Reno 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro+ look pretty similar to the Reno 8 phones, but boast upgrades going up to a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the Pro+ model. Big batteries, up to 80W fast charging, and high-res main cameras complete the spec sheet - but will we ever see these models outside of China? This podcast is produced by Foundry. Qualcomm has announced its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset hot on the heels of MediaTek, whose Dimensity 9200 chip we discussed last week. There are many similarities between the two high-end mobile platforms but Qualcomm's brand power means it is a few steps ahead of its rival, promising the 8 Gen 2 will appear in phones from most of the major Android players. This week on Fast Charge Anyron, Lewis and Henry Iook into the specs of the 8 Gen 2 to discuss whether you would notice the difference between it and the 8+ Gen 1 we've seen in phones like the OnePlus 10T. How much power do you really need? We'll also touch on the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 chip designed for augmented reality and our hopes for WearOS smartwatches now an Oppo watch has the new Snapdragon W5 chip. After that, the team discuss the latest Pixel Fold leaks and a device that looks an awful lot like the Pixel 7, as you might expect. If accurate, will Google bring anything new to the form factor, or is it more of the same on the bandwagon train? Is software more important than hardware in the long run? Finally, it's the best time of year to grab a tech bargain – that's right, Black Friday is nearly upon us, so impending that we may not even be able to record a show next week as we will be so busy. That's why we round off today's episode by highlighting some of the best deals we've seen so far (yes, they have already started) and give you our best buying advice tips for the buying time of year we all hate to love (or is that love to hate?). Join the team as they discuss MediaTek's Dimensity 9200 launch this week, a chip that's all but confirmed to appear in a premium Vivo phone by the end of the year. The gang also discuss the latest Huawei flagship phone, the Mate 50 Pro, which Henry has had in for review. It ships without native support for Google Mobile Services or the Google Play Store, but Huawei says it has made strides with its own AppGallery and ways to download and use popular apps – is the Mate 50 Pro a viable smartphone for European buyers in 2022, especially ad £1,199? Finally, the team chat about Honor, once a subsidiary of Huawei but now free to do what it wants. It's just announced its Magic Vs folding phone, which will come to global markets including Europe. Do we think it will be a decent rival device to Samsung's Z Fold 4, or is it just more of the same? This podcast is produced by Foundry. This week's show will kick off with Lewis and his thoughts on the Nokia X30, the top-end mid-ranger from HMD Global. But rather than being much of the same as last year's X20, the X30 has a few key upgrades that could allow it to compete with the OnePlus Nord 2T and Nothing Phone (1). We then move on to VR headsets, with Lewis taking us through the latest announcements from Meta, Pico and PlayStation following the expensive PSVR 2 RRP reveal earlier this week. Then it's time to turn our thoughts to the mess that is Twitter right now. With Elon Musk behind the wheel at the social network, booting out the Twitter board and instigating a monthly fee for Twitter verification, it's a crazy time for the Tweeterverse. This week we're revisiting the iPhone 14 series as Henry shares his thoughts on the 14 Plus, before we dive into a couple new Xiaomi models. The iPhone 14 Plus marks the return of the big, cheap(ish) iPhone flagship, after two years of the ultimately unsuccessful Mini model. But with Apple reportedly slowing production already, it looks like Henry isn't the only person unconvinced by the need for a big iPhone that costs almost as much as the Pro models. Then Anyron jumps on the show to talk about the Xiaomi 12T, which launched alongside its Pro sibling the other week. These aren't quite new flagship phones, but they're pretty powerful for mid-rangers. Is that enough to win over a crowded market though? Finally, we get a look at Xiaomi's budget plans for the next year with the Chinese launch of the Redmi Note 12 series. There were almost twenty Note 11 phones across the full range in various markets, so the Note 12, Note 12 Pro, and Note 12 Pro+ are probably just the tip of the iceberg, but tell us a bit about Xiaomi's strategy for 2023. After a couple weeks off, we're back… with a vengeance? Well, we certainly may have it out for Apple, after it unveiled a new iPad range that's left us scratching our heads. The new regular iPad boasts a slick new design, a landscape camera, updated keyboard with function keys, and USB-C. But it's also much more expensive, and strangely similar to the Air. Meanwhile the new Pro models pack all the power you'd expect thanks to an M2 chip upgrade, but miss out on half the new features added into the base model. What gives, Apple? After that, it's time for our rather belated reviews of the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel Watch. Chris can't join us this week to chat about the regular 7, but Henry has his thoughts ready on Google's latest and possibly greatest. This podcast is produced by Foundry. We spoke about the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra a couple of weeks ago, but it's back with a vengeance after Dom's been testing the phone and is surprised to discover it might be one of his favourites of the year so far. Launched alongside the cheaper Edge 30 Fusion and Neo, the Ultra is a high-specced phone that can match almost any flagship out there, while undercutting them all on price. It may be headlined bya 200Mp main rear camera, but to be honest that's not even the real draw: this is simply a well-balanced, slick flagship phone with few flaws at an excellent price. That's especially true when we see its latest competition, as Huawei launches the Mate 50 Pro in Europe - though not the regular Mate 50. Like most Huawei phones the hardware here looks excellent, and the variable aperture camera in particular has our attention. But is €1,399 simply too much for a 4G phone with no Google services? Finally, the cloud gaming market is finally heating up, as Logitech unveiled its G Cloud handset, only to be followed days later by the first official tease of the Razer Edge 5G - almost certain to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chip, as seen in the Razer dev kit device shown off last year. How do these two handsets differ, and should the Switch and Steam Deck be worried? This podcast is produced by Foundry. Is the iPhone 14 Pro the best iPhone you can buy right now? And can the Oppo Reno 8 Pro compete in a very competitive mid-range market? First up on Fast Charge this week, Lewis gives his thoughts on the iPhone 14 Pro after a week of use. Is the Dynamic Island all it's cracked up to be? Is the new 48Mp camera as revolutionary as Apple suggests? And most importantly, is it an iPhone that can last all day? The crew discuss. Next up, the Fast Charge team discuss the rising prices of tech. No matter where you look, the price of tech is on the up-and-up. Henry, Lewis and Hannah discuss the best time to buy tech to bag yourself a bargain, and give tips on the most affordable smartphones right now. Finally, Hannah has been testing out the Oppo Reno 8 Pro, the company's latest competitive mid-ranger. Is Motorola finally on the edge of flagship phone success with the new additions to the Edge 30 range? And is iOS 16 the enormous update we were promised? First up on Fast Charge this week, we talk about the new Motorola Edge 30 phones, launched last week. This is headline by the Edge 30 Ultra, an all-singing, all-dancing flagship with a 200Mp camera, super-fast charging, and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, all for an unexpectedly affordable price tag. The Edge 30 Fusion and Neo have taken our fancy a little too, a pair of capable mid-rangers with surprisingly sleek design. After years in the wilderness, is Motorola finally back? Meanwhile, iOS 16 is officially out – and while we're still waiting for our new iPhones, Henry and Lewis have been busy testing out the new software on existing hardware. So if you're an iPhone owner, should you upgrade? And should Android users feel like they're missing out? Finally, Lewis has been testing out the Vivo V25 Pro, and has his review ready just in time for its smaller sibling's launch in India. We're back, and ready to review Samsung's latest two foldables, along with the Buds 2 Pro and both new Galaxy Watch 5 models. Just in time to then look forward at what we're expecting from Apple's just-confirmed iPhone 14 launch. Lewis, Dom, and Henry have all spent the last two weeks testing various bits of Samsung kit, and we have our hot takes at the ready as we review the Z Flip 4, Z Fold 4, both Galaxy Watch 5 models, and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. Is this a bumper year for Samsung, or so-so sameness? Not to be outdone, Apple took the opportunity yesterday to confirm its next event, officially scheduled for 7 September. With the iPhone 14 almost certain to appear, what are we expecting from the new phones – and what other hardware will Apple announce alongside them. This podcast is produced by Foundry. We are well and truly into smartphone summer silly season with software releases, beta tracks, rumour mills, and flagship phones galore all vying for our and your collective tech attention. Android 13 is officially rolling out to Pixel 6 phones around the world. It's a little earlier in the year than usual, but will many people notice many differences given Android 12 was such a huge visual change? The new version appears to be an iterative update to 2021's big step into Material You and colour scheming, but there a few important changes worth highlighting. When your phone will get the update is another matter. One such phone slated to get Android 13 later this year is the OnePlus 10T. It's a curious phone from the company that used to outright replace its flagship phone for the year with the 'T' model six months later, but this time it's something different altogether. On paper some parts are better than the older OnePlus 10 Pro, but it's at the expense of a few key features - like the absence of the fan favourite alert slider - that drive the price down. We've reviewed the phone and will delve into its curious proposition. Vivo is a Chinese brand that like OnePlus is owned by BBK Group, but has gone a different route with its latest phones the V25 and V25 Pro. They've caught headlines thanks to colour changing tech of the back panels that will surely see copycats elsewhere in the industry, and remarkably high-spec selfie cameras for the asking price. The mid-range phone market is incredibly competitive of late, and these phones are further proof of that. This podcast is produced by Foundry. This week has been a foldable fest, with not one, not two, not even three, but four new foldable phones announced in quick succession - in fact, they all debuted within 24 hours of one another. First up, Samsung gave a global launch to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4. After transformative updates to last year's models, this year is more about iteration, but there's still a lot to like here. The Flip 4 in particular has been re-designed to fix its predecessor's biggest flaws, while the Fold 4 benefits from improved proportions and a serious camera upgrade. Not to be outdone, Motorola held its delayed launch for the Razr 2022 in China. With a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 inside this is a match for Samsung's Flip 4 on specs, and may trump its Korean rival on camera performance too, with a 50Mp rear shooter. Throw in a larger cover display, a 144Hz internal display, and a sleek design, and Samsung may have real competition when the Razr gets a global launch later this year. Finally, Xiaomi held a Chinese launch of its own, revealing its second foldable: the Mix Fold 2. This book-style folding phone is a Z Fold 4 rival with an astonishingly thin design - just 5.4mm thick when open - along with strong specs and another Leica-branded camera. The smallest flagship of the year is here: the Asus Zenfone 9. Dom has been testing the dinky Android phone for the last week or two, and he's a little bit in love with the portable powerhouse, which packs in an 8+ Gen 1 and gimbal-stabilised camera. But can the chassis contain that much power, and are there problems lurking in the unique new polymer finish? Anyron has been testing out another 8+ Gen 1 phone, the Red Magic 7S Pro. It's a compelling gaming phone if you don't mind the under-display selfie camera, but there's not much new compared to the 7 Pro - which only launched a few months back. Finally, Huawei unveiled a new MatePad Pro tablet, along with launching its HarmonyOS 3.0 software in China. So what's new, and will it ever arrive in the West? This podcast is produced by Foundry. It's a battle of the mid-rangers as we review both the Google Pixel 6a and the Nothing Phone (1), and in the process pit these two similarly priced phones up against one another. The Pixel 6a was announced a whole two months ago but we finally have the phone, just as pre-orders start, and Henry is ready to explain why he thinks this is the new best mid-ranger on the market after two weeks of putting it through its paces. Dom has in turn been testing out the Nothing Phone (1), which sits at the same price but looks very different, and balances its specs in whole other way. Does it survive its own hype campaign, and can it dethrone the Pixel 6a already - not to mention the OnePlus Nord 2T, iPhone SE, and Samsung Galaxy A53, all at about the same price. Finally, Samsung has confirmed its next Galaxy Unpacked event in August. We run through everything we're expecting to see on the day, including the Flip 4, Fold 4, Watch 5, and Buds 2 Pro. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is finally here, arriving in five phones from two manufacturers this week - with plenty more to come. Xiaomi got there first, equipping its entire Xiaomi 12S line with the new flagship Qualcomm chip. The trio of phones may be exclusive to China, but the Leica-branded, camera-centric 12S Ultra is a phenomenal powerhouse that any phone fan will want to know about. Asus may have launched second, but it's the first to bring the 8+ Gen 1 global in its ROG Phone 6 gaming phones. There are regular and Pro models, but only differentiated by RAM and the inclusion of a rear display or not - Anyron has reviewed the 6 Pro, and thinks this is the best a gaming phone gets right now. Finally, we decided to revisit the year so far, and look at the phones we loved - and didn't love - from the first half of 2022, before looking ahead to what's got us excited over the next six months. Note: Apologies this episode is so late, and that last week's never happened - blame summer holidays! Expect 122 any day now though. This podcast is produced by Foundry. HTC's smartphone revival is here. Sort of. The Desire 22 Pro is an Android mid-ranger that's launching in the UK and Europe, with the key hook that it's set up to stream directly to the company's Vive Flow headset and hook into its Viverse ecosystem. Is that enough to attract customers though? Meanwhile, the Osom OV1 is no more. The first phone from the start-up was due this year, but instead the company is now working together with blockchain company Solana on the Saga, a handset built for web3. But what does that mean, why should we care, and what went wrong with the OV1? Finally, Henry has been testing out the Fairphone 4. It's not a new device - it launched late last year - but it's the closest Fairphone has come yet to delivering on its ethical promise while also offering a handset that can keep pace with rivals. Sony's 2022 flagship is finally out now and we have thoughts - plus Poco has unveiled two new phones, and Anyron explains why Windows Mobile is due a return. The Xperia 1 IV officially went on sale here in the UK last week, and not one but two of us have gotten samples to test out. Henry and Dom have both been putting Sony's flagship through its paces over the past week, and are ready to decide if Sony has nailed it this year, or produced another flagship that only a fanboy could love. Meanwhile Poco has been busy, unveiling both the F4 and the X4 GT today. These two affordable mid-rangers feature a few similarities but a lot more differences. The F4 is all about its upgraded camera (while it sticks with the same old chip as last year), while the X4 GT prioritises performance with a Dimensity 8100 chipset and 144Hz LCD display. Finally, Anyron has prepared his hottest of takes: Windows Mobile is due a return. He wants to see the next Surface Duo device ditch Android and run Windows 11 instead - has he lost the plot, or is Microsoft ready for mobile? This podcast is produced by Foundry. The biggest news in the tech world this week was about nothing at all, as we got our first look at the Nothing Phone (1), while we've taken the excuse to give our thoughts on another pair of slightly odd phones. The Nothing Phone (1) is the first phone from Carl Pei's new start-up, and we finally know what it looks like. Transparent plastic, a visible charging coil, and LED light strips complete the undeniably unusual aesthetic, which is already divisive - and thus apparently doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is another oddity, with the latest generation of ZTE's under-display selfie camera tech. The camera is now genuinely almost invisible, but is photo quality good enough yet? Finally, the Astro Slide 5G is the latest device from Planet Computers. With a sliding mechanical keyboard and Linux support it's half inheritor to the BlackBerry throne and half a programmer's dream toy - but could anyone actually use it as their daily driver? We're back, and just in time to spend an hour obsessing over iOS 16. That's right, Apple has unveiled the latest version of its iPhone operating system - due to launch officially later this year - and there's a lot to like. The customisable lock screen has to be the most exciting change, though iPad owners may be more pumped for iPadOS's new multi-tasking features and - gasp - weather app. Meanwhile both the Realme GT Neo 3 and Black Shark 5 Pro have been given global launches, and Dom and Lewis are on hand to give their reviews of the new phones. One has the fastest wired charging anywhere right now, the other is a bullish spec beast built for gaming. How do they stack up? Finally, on a sad note, this is Toddy's final episode of Fast Charge, as he makes an escape for pastures new. So make sure to tune in to see him off. This podcast is produced by Foundry. Qualcomm and MediaTek have been head-to-head in the smartphone silicon war for a while, but never more so than each announcing new chips on either side of the same weekend. Qualcomm led the way with top-tier Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and the more mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, while MediaTek followed quickly with the mmWave-enabled Dimensity 1050 alongside the more affordable Dimensity 930 & Helio G99 - its first serious salvo at the US market. Meanwhile over in China Oppo unveiled the Reno 8 series - one of which is powered by that brand-new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, though each of the three phones so far has a different chipset. But will the phones ever make it to the rest of the world? Finally, Dom is ready to review the Honor Magic 4 Pro - the company's first full flagship since it got Google back. But can a post-Huawei Honor compete with the big dogs, or are there too many rough edges to be a true rival? This podcast is produced by Foundry. Did you think OnePlus might have run out of phones to launch? Think again. The company has just unveiled the Nord 2T, a new mid-ranger for Europe and India - alongside a European launch of the Nord CE 2 Lite and budget Nord Buds. Our new phones editor Henry has been busy testing out the 2T, and has his first impressions ready to go. Meanwhile Toddy has been on a jaunt to Milan to go hands-on with the Huawei Mate Xs 2 foldable as it too gets a global launch, along with the Watch GT 3 Pro and a slew of other wearables. And finally, Henry has also been reviewing the Poco F4 GT and is ready to review the gaming phone that doesn't look like one. This podcast is produced by Foundry. Well, this has been a busy week. Google has obviously drawn the most attention. At a bumper Google I/O event the search giant not only showed off Android 13 and its new Wear OS, but also (deep breath) the Pixel 6a, Pixel Watch, Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, and an entirely new Pixel tablet. Only hours early Sony held its own livestream, revealing the new Xperia 1 IV flagship and more affordable Xperia 10 IV - though there's no sign of the expected compact Xperia 5 IV. But with a familiar design and only minor spec tweaks, are these destined to be yet more Sony also-rans? Finally, ZTE also unveiled its new flagship line-up, the Axon 40 series. As expected this includes the company's third-gen under-display selfie camera - but what else do the Axons have to offer? This podcast is produced by Foundry. Welcome to the eye of the storm. Last week was full of launches, next week will be full of launches. This week is a (perhaps welcome) lull. We're taking advantage of the breather to talk about the Samsung Galaxy A53, a mid-ranger that looks on paper to be an impressive entry in the space - and to wipe the floor with the iPhone SE. But is it all it's hyped up to be? Then we're turning to arguably next week's biggest launch: Google I/O. We've chatted about it a bit before, but with Android 13 now out in beta form we want to re-assess what we expect to see from Google, including the latest hardware rumours around the Pixel 6a and Pixel Watch. Speaking of: one of those rumours is that we'll get a glimpse of the Pixel Fold. This week has seen a spate of new rumours surrounding not only that phone but also the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4, a new Oppo clamshell foldable, the next Xiaomi foldable, and more. Let's break down everything we know so far about the next generation of folding phones. This podcast is produced by Foundry. After a few slow weeks, phone season is in full swing again, with more launches this week than we have time to talk about on the show - so we're focussing on the big ones. First up, Vivo unveiled its flagship X80 series in China, and confirmed plans to bring them worldwide next month too. The X80 and X80 Pro (no Pro+ yet, but it's coming later in the year) both feature serious camera specs and use the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset - with an extra 8 Gen 1 option for the Pro. The X70 series won the camera battle last year, so can the X80 repeat the trick? Meanwhile Huawei is unveiling its fourth book-style foldable today: the Mate Xs 2. At the time of writing we know nothing about it, but by the time of the show we'll have all the info from the Chinese launch to chat through on the show. Finally, Poco unveiled the F4 GT - the first flagship-level phone it's bringing to the global market. With a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 120Hz AMOLED display, and 120W charging this is no slouch - but can it meet Poco's aim to deliver a gaming phone that's not just for gamers? As OnePlus unveils two more phones, we review the Oppo Find N and ask what Netflix has to do to save itself. First up, while the OnePlus Ace launches in China (which we discussed last week) the cheap Nord N20 is arriving in the US. With basic specs and T-Mobile exclusivity this is a far cry from the flagship 10 Pro, but the Nord line has been tearing it up in the US so far - can the N20 do the same? Meanwhile we've finally gotten our hands on the China-only Oppo Find N foldable, and Lewis has been busy putting it to use. Find out what he thinks of of BBK's first foldable - does Samsung finally have some real competition? Finally, it's been a bad weak for Netflix. With dwindling subscribers and plummeting stock prices, what does the streaming giant have to do to turn things around - and will it involve ads? Or will it all blow over when Stranger Things 4 rolls around? This podcast is produced by Foundry. This week a new player has entered the foldable fight, while OnePlus is readying its next launch and Anyron is reviewing the Red Magic 7 Pro. Vivo unveiled its first foldable, the Vivo X Fold, and on paper this offers enough to make Samsung and Oppo nervous thanks to top specs and a powerful rear camera. It's joined by the enormous X Note slab phone and the more affordable Vivo Pad tablet, and we'll run through what all three have to offer. Meanwhile OnePlus has announced a slew of phone launches, most notable the OnePlus Ace and OnePlus 10R - which look an awful lot like they're the same phone by different names. And having said that, they're also awfully similar to the Realme GT Neo 3... Finally, Anyron is ready to review the Red Magic 7 Pro after spending the last few days testing out the premium gaming phone. He'll break down how it compares to the regular Red Magic 7, and what it brings to the mobile gaming market this year. This podcast is produced by Foundry. This week we're looking forward, to both Apple and Google's big summer events and the prospect of a Twitter freed from the shackles of permanence. Or something like that. Apple has finally confirmed the dates for its annual WWDC event, taking place in early June, so there's no better to excuse to look ahead to what to expect, with both iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 set to debut, along with other software and likely a hardware announcement or two. Google will beat Cupertino to the punch though. Its Google I/O developer conference is set for May, and alongside more of Android 13 we're expecting to see the Pixel 6a debut, perhaps alongside a tease of the Pixel Watch - and maybe even our first Pixel foldable. Finally, Twitter has had a tumultuous week. First the world's richest man decided to buy the largest stake in the social network site for a few billion dollars, and then (perhaps not coincidentally) Twitter revealed it's working on the long-requested edit button feature. Hannah thinks a Twitter edit button would be disastrous - but will the rest of us agree? This podcast is produced by Foundry. Dyson has revealed a ‘world first' pair of headphones, while Google's Pixel Watch is rumoured to make an appearance alongside the Pixel 7, and we finally give our thoughts on the long-awaited OnePlus 10 Pro. The show kicks off with Toddy giving his thoughts on the latest OnePlus flagship, the OnePlus 10 Pro, following its global reveal this afternoon. Is it the next big thing, or should you look elsewhere? Toddy has the answers you need. Next up is Dyson, a company you wouldn't expect to release a pair of headphones – but it did. In signature Dyson flair, the Dyson Zone headphones aren't just high-end with ANC but offer air purifying technology to keep you breathing easy among rising air pollution levels. Lewis got to try them out ahead of the announcement, and he'll be sharing his thoughts. The show then rounds off with a discussion of the latest Pixel Watch rumours amidst the news that the long-awaited wearable might finally make an appearance later this year, possibly alongside Google's upcoming Pixel 7. Nothing finally has something to share, while Realme unveils its 150W charging tech and we give our early impressions on Apple's latest hardware. Carl Pei's start-up Nothing has confirmed longstanding rumours that it's working on an Android phone, though we don't know an awful lot more than that. The Nothing Phone (1) will launch this summer running NothingOS, but is there actually anything behind all the smoke and mirrors? Realme at least has something more concrete. The GT Neo 3 has launched in China, with international plans to follow. Curiously it comes in two versions with different battery and charging tech, but the exciting model offers ludicrously fast 150W charging - and two slick race car-inspired finishes. Finally, after a few days testing them out, Dom and Lewis are ready to give their first impressions on the iPad Air and iPhone SE. From the new iPad's creakgate crisis to some odd performance problems on the iPhone, not all is well in Cupertino - though the Air may yet be the best iPad around. It's been a long time coming, but Xiaomi decided this week it was finally ready to bring the Xiaomi 12 series to the rest of the world - and not to be out-done, Samsung also took the opportunity to unveil its updated mid-range line-up. The Xiaomi 12, 12 Pro, and 12X are all making it to the global market, with prices starting from $649. Chris has reviewed the Xiaomi 12, while Dom tested the 12 Pro, so the pair of them are ready to share their thoughts on Xiaomi's latest and decide if they can compete in an already competitive 2022 market. Meanwhile Samsung unveiled new A-series phones, and Dom had the opportunity to go hands-on with the new A33 and A53. Mid-range Samsung handsets aren't always exciting, but with updated designs, IP67 ratings, and up to four years of Android updates, these could be the phones to beat Apple's iPhone SE at its own game. And finally, better late than never, we're ready with our full review of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Lewis has spent the week putting Samsung's biggest and baddest phone through its paces and is ready to spill all. This podcast is produced by Foundry. This was Apple's week, and just about every other tech company decided (perhaps wisely) to steer clear. Then again, given the state of the iPhone SE, maybe Apple should have too. So yes, the iPhone SE is...the same as the last one. Well, the chipset has been upgraded, and it's got 5G, but otherwise this is basically the same phone: big bezel, Home Button, and piddly 720p LCD display all included. Of course, this being Apple, it'll probably sell phenomenally anyway. At least the iPad Air is more promising, with an upgrade to the M1 chip making this better than ever. Throw in 5G, Center Stage cameras, and, uh, a slightly faster USB-C port, and this might even be enough to deter buyers from Apple's own iPad Pros. And then there's the Mac Studio. The big daddy of mini Macs, the new Studio is a compact desktop PC that costs thousands but delivers potentially unmatched performance thanks to the choice of an M1 Max or new M1 Ultra chip. MWC is back. Sort of. It's a bit smaller than usual, and there weren't quite as many major launches as we're used to, but the year's biggest smartphone trade show did throw up a few surprises. The biggest launch of the show was undoubtedly the brand-new Honor Magic 4 and Magic 4 Pro flagships, but we also got the global launch of the Realme GT 2, some new budget models from Poco, TCL and Nokia, and absurd new charging tech from Oppo and Realme. And that's not even mentioning a host of new Android tablets. This podcast is produced by Foundry. Oppo has finally broken cover with the Find X5 (yes, 5 - not 4) series, which followed hot on the heels of the Indian launch of the iQOO 9 series, and there's plenty to look forward to with MWC next week. First up, Oppo. There are three Find X5 phones, but all the excitement is about the Find X5 Pro - which Dom has been reviewing for the last week. Oppo's outlandish design is back, along with an impressively well-rounded feature set that makes this flagship a bit of a people-pleaser. Meanwhile Vivo gave a global (well, Indian) launch for the iQOO 9 series. These may be branded as gaming phones, but with a sporty design and top specs there's no reason to limit their appeal to gamers - as Hannah found when reviewing the iQOO 9 Pro. Finally, we look forward to next week. Mobile World Congress is upon us, but which brands are attending, and what are we expecting them to actually launch? We predict what's coming from Honor, Realme, Samsung, and more. This podcast is produced by Foundry. As we teased last time, this has been a busy launch week for phone lovers. Today saw OnePlus reveal the Nord CE 2, which is either a sequel to the Nord CE or a cheaper version of the Nord 2, depending on how you look at it. Dom has the lowdown on a phone he was meant to have reviewed by now, if a pesky flu hadn't had something to say about it. Fortunately Hannah has managed to review the Realme 9 Pro+, the top tier entry in the new Realme 9 range. It borrows the colour-changing design from the Vivo V23 series, and packs in solid specs that will rival almost any other phone around this price. Meanwhile Toddy has been hard at work on another Plus phone, though right at the other end of the price spectrum. He's been testing out the Galaxy S22+ all week, and is ready with our first review of Samsung's new product range. This podcast is produced by Foundry. This was Samsung's week, so it was no surprise to see just about every other tech company in the world step back and give the Korean giant some space. That means we're focusing on a Galaxy Unpacked deep dive on the show, starting with the Galaxy S22 series. There are three phones this time around, but really it's all about the Ultra, the souped up flagship that looks more like a Note phone than anything else in the S22 series, with a rounded body and space for an S Pen stylus to slot inside. The regular S22 and S22+ are no slouches though. They may look similar to last year's S21 models, but they've had seriously upgraded camera setups that should keep them competitive in the 2022 market. And by returning to a glass body while keeping prices the same, Samsung has done a lot to win its core fans back over. Then there's the Tab S8 series. The S8 and S8+ are solid, if unexciting, Android tablets. But the S8 Ultra is its own strange beast. With a massive 14.5in widescreen display it's essentially positioned as a laptop replacement, helped by including powerful front-facing cameras that will beat any laptop webcam - though admittedly we could do without the notch. It's official: Fast Charge is 100 (episodes). To celebrate, we're going to throw out our best bad tech takes, live on air, ready to be eviscerated in the comments for all the nonsense views we're desperately clinging to. But before that, we'll be reviewing the two latest Huawei flagships. First up is the P50 Pro, the camera-first slab phone that Huawei launched in China almost a year back. With its global launch now upon us, Toddy is ready to find out if the camera can still compete with the latest and greatest camera phones on the market. Then there's the P50 Pocket. Confirmed Z Flip obsessive Dom has been testing the Pocket out all week, and is ready to declare if Huawei is the new clamshell king - along with some live comparisons to last year's Z Flip 3. New week, new phones. Xiaomi has unveiled the Redmi Note 11 series, while the Fast Charge team is ready to review new offerings from both Samsung and Motorola. There are four phones in the Redmi Note 11 series, ranging from a regular model up to the Note 11 Pro 5G. Even that top-end model is affordable, coming in below $400, but offering a 120Hz AMOLED display, 67W charging, and a 108Mp camera. Dom is ready to review the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE - just in time before the launch of the Galaxy S22 next month - and answer the question of whether this phone has something to offer in 2022, or if it's just too little, too late. Finally, Lewis has been testing out the Moto G200 - a mid-range marvel from Motorola that offers a lot more bang for your buck than you might be expecting. Is this actually one of the best mid-range phones around now? This podcast is produced by IDG Communications. This week Dom is ready to review Vivo's selfie-focussed V23 Pro, while we take advantage of the lull in launches to look ahead to what Samsung and Apple each have ready to launch this spring. The V23 Pro is the first Pro phone in Vivo's selfie-centric V-series, and launched alongside the regular V23 in India a couple of weeks back. It boasts a slick design and powerful front-facing cameras, but is that enough to make it a mid-range must-buy? Meanwhile we're just weeks away from what's hotly tipped to be an early February launch for Samsung's Galaxy S22 range and Tab S8 series, both of which have been leaked extensively. Here's everything we're expecting to see, with a focus on Samsung's new flagship phones. Apple has its own launches lined up though, and with new leaks hinting at what to expect from a new iPhone SE and iPad Air, we round up what we think Apple is working on too. It's the week after CES, which means things are a little quieter. A little. Because it's still the week that's seen a major new foldable phone launch. Honor has unveiled the Magic V, its first attempt at a foldable phone - and already the most powerful foldable on the market, as it's the first to arrive with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 inside. With a Galaxy Fold-esque form factor, this looks like a solid foldable offering - but is it enough from Honor, and will we ever see it break out of China? Meanwhile, fresh iPhone 14 rumours point to a pretty unusual new notch/punch-hole camera design. It's enough to prompt us to wonder if that's really what the iPhone 14 might look like - and if it is, does it matter? Knowing us, we'll probably also start chatting about under-display selfie cameras and the like, including a new Google patent in exactly that area that we think might be for the Pixel 7 or Pixel Fold. Finally, it's been a tumultuous start to the year for BlackBerry fans. First existing handsets basically stopped working, then OnwardMobility confirmed it is still working on a new BlackBerry phone for 2022, and in the meantime British company Planet Computers brought their Astro Slide phone - complete with a physical QWERTY keyboard - to CES. What's going on with it all, and is there really a market for BlackBerries in 2022 anyway? This podcast is produced by IDG Communications. CES is normally a quiet trade show for smartphone fans, with launches focussed on cars, TVs, and the smart home - but 2022 has decided to buck some trends, with major phone launches taking place at the show. First up, Samsung finally launched the long-awaited (and much-rumoured) Galaxy S21 FE. This mid-range successor to the S21 line packs strong specs and a really sleek design, but after months of delays can it really command Samsung's $699 asking price? We also know a lot more than we expected to about the OnePlus 10 Pro. The phone's design and specs were revealed at CES this week ahead of a full launch in China next week, and we like a lot of what we've seen of the phone. OnePlus will have an uphill battle to win its fans back over though, and the absence of a regular OnePlus 10 isn't likely to help matters. Finally, Realme didn't attend CES, but did go ahead and launch the GT 2 series anyway - in China at least. The heavily leaked GT 2 Pro was joined by a regular GT 2, but it's still the Pro that held our attention thanks to the appearance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and other specs that mark this out as the true flagship that Realme promised.
