Don and Tom kick off this episode by responding to a one-star Apple Podcast reviewer who promised to upgrade to five stars—if they correct their allegedly false Bitcoin claims. Challenge accepted. Don clarifies his earlier “nobody uses Bitcoin” remark by digging into the actual numbers: only 15,000 businesses worldwide accept it, out of over 359 million—roughly 0.0004%, making it statistically more rare than a lightning strike. They also break down the real costs of converting Bitcoin to dollars: while some exchanges charge under 1%, Bitcoin ATMs routinely charge 5–25% in fees, with total costs sometimes exceeding 30%. Then, a listener calls in with a ChatGPT-generated portfolio featuring VUG, VEA, SMH, and AXON. Don tears it apart for being tech-heavy, overly concentrated, and missing broad market exposure—ironically, even ChatGPT agrees with him. Listeners also get advice on why ETFs are gradually replacing mutual funds, when (if ever) annuities make sense, and why indexed annuities are the financial industry's version of timeshares: opaque, overpriced, and always sold, never bought. Despite the facts and the humor, Don doubts his five-star redemption is coming—but if Greg's Mowing and Septic accepts Bitcoin, there's still hope. 0:26 Don confronts repeat negative podcast reviewers 1:35 NavRep's public offer: “Correct your Bitcoin lies and I'll give 5 stars” 2:31 Bitcoin rebuttal: 15,000 businesses accept it—out of 359 million 5:13 Teaser: Bitcoin conversion fees part 2 coming up after the break 6:26 Don admits his imprecise “nobody accepts Bitcoin” claim 8:19 Clearing up the 8% Bitcoin conversion fee claim—context was ATMs 9:49 Bitcoin ATM fees average 17.5%, sometimes hit 30% 11:04 Exchange conversion under 1% is possible—but not for quick cash 13:10 Volatility and impracticality still make Bitcoin a poor currency 16:00 ChatGPT jokes: “Beer at a Baptist wedding” & “Greg the mower” 16:49 Caller Jason asks ChatGPT for a portfolio; Don and Tom cringe 17:46 ChatGPT suggested a tech-heavy, overly concentrated portfolio 20:40 Better suggestions: VT, AVGE, DFAW—not VUG/SMH/AXON 21:50 Don's GPT criticizes Jason's GPT: “No bonds, no value, no real estate” 23:43 Caller Scott nails TRM's philosophy and nearly retires Don 26:12 The rare “pros” of annuities—and their bigger downsides 28:24 Indexed annuities: regular income taxed as ordinary income 30:02 Betting against the house: how annuity math favors insurers 31:44 Caller Jane asks if ETFs are better than mutual funds 32:05 ETF settlement is faster, but that's not a reason to choose 33:30 Vanguard accounts support ETFs beyond their own funds 34:51 Updated: mutual funds now settle T+1, ETFs also T+1 36:26 Jane warned about National Life Group's indexed annuity pitch 37:07 Why Don hates indexed annuities: high fees, low returns, opaque structure 39:27 Still selling like hotcakes: $27B in indexed annuities sold Q1 2025 40:35 Wrap-up: annuities remain unethical despite legality and popularity Learn more about your ad choices. When officers respond to a call that seems routine — like a mental health check — they often have no idea how quickly that encounter could escalate. For Officer Alessandra Winterbauer of the Lincoln (Nebraska) Police Department, what began as a calm conversation with a confused subject turned into a life-or-death confrontation. Her ability to remain composed and rely on recent virtual reality training helped avoid a deadly outcome and led to her recognition with Axon's 2025 Jack Cover Save of the Year Award. Officer Winterbauer and a colleague were dispatched to check on a man experiencing a possible mental health crisis. After a calm 20-minute conversation, the man abruptly asked, “If I come at you guys with a knife, will you shoot me?” Moments later, he sprinted toward officers. Winterbauer deployed her TASER 10 from over 30 feet away — just minutes after completing VR-based TASER training. Her successful response neutralized the threat without serious injury, demonstrating the real-world value of immersive, high-frequency training. Today on Elixir Wizards, hosts Sundi Myint and Charles Suggs catch up with Sean Moriarity, co-creator of the Nx project and author of Machine Learning in Elixir. Sean reflects on his transition from the military to a civilian job building large language models (LLMs) for software. He explains how the Elixir ML landscape has evolved since the rise of ChatGPT, shifting from building native model implementations toward orchestrating best-in-class tools. We discuss the pragmatics of adding ML to Elixir apps: when to start with out-of-the-box LLMs vs. rolling your own, how to hook into Python-based libraries, and how to tap Elixir's distributed computing for scalable workloads. Sean closes with advice for developers embarking on Elixir ML projects, from picking motivating use cases to experimenting with domain-specific languages for AI-driven workflows. Key topics discussed in this episode: The evolution of the Nx (Numerical Elixir) project and what's new with ML in Elixir Treating Elixir as an orchestration layer for external ML tools When to rely on off-the-shelf LLMs vs. custom models Strategies for integrating Elixir with Python-based ML libraries Leveraging Elixir's distributed computing strengths for ML tasks Starting ML projects with existing data considerations Synthetic data generation using large language models Exploring DSLs to streamline AI-powered business logic Balancing custom frameworks and service-based approaches in production Pragmatic advice for getting started with ML in Elixir Links mentioned: https://hexdocs.pm/nx/intro-to-nx.html https://pragprog.com/titles/smelixir/machine-learning-in-elixir/ https://magic.dev/ https://smartlogic.io/podcast/elixir-wizards/s10-e10-sean-moriarity-machine-learning-elixir/ Pragmatic Bookshelf: https://pragprog.com/ ONNX Runtime Bindings for Elixir: https://github.com/elixir-nx/ortex https://github.com/elixir-nx/bumblebee Silero Voice Activity Detector: https://github.com/snakers4/silero-vad Paulo Valente Graph Splitting Article: https://dockyard.com/blog/2024/11/06/2024/nx-sharding-update-part-1 Thomas Millar's Twitter https://x.com/thmsmlr https://github.com/thmsmlr/instructorex https://phoenix.new/ https://tidewave.ai/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BERT(language_model) Talk: PyTorch: Fast Differentiable Dynamic Graphs in Python (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am895oU6mmY) by Soumith Chintala https://hexdocs.pm/axon/Axon.html https://hexdocs.pm/exla/EXLA.html VLM (Vision Language Models Explained): https://huggingface.co/blog/vlms https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp Vector Search in Elixir: https://github.com/elixir-nx/hnswlib https://www.amplified.ai/ Llama 4 https://mistral.ai/ Mistral Open-Source LLMs: https://mistral.ai/ https://github.com/openai/whisper Elixir Wizards Season 5: Adopting Elixir https://smartlogic.io/podcast/elixir-wizards/season-five https://docs.ray.io/en/latest/ray-overview/index.html https://hexdocs.pm/flame/FLAME.html https://firecracker-microvm.github.io/ https://fly.io/ https://kubernetes.io/ WireGuard VPNs https://www.wireguard.com/ https://hexdocs.pm/phoenixpubsub/Phoenix.PubSub.html https://www.manning.com/books/deep-learning-with-python Code BEAM 2025 Keynote: Designing LLM Native Systems - Sean Moriarity Ash Framework https://ash-hq.org/ Sean's Twitter: https://x.com/seanmoriarity Sean's Personal Blog: https://seanmoriarity.com/ Erlang Ecosystems Foundation Slack: https://erlef.org/slack-invite/erlef Elixir Forum https://elixirforum.com/ Sean's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-m-ba231a149/ Special Guest: Sean Moriarity.

Absolute, Season 1: Taser Incorporated is at once a tale as old as time - a true believer learns the hard way that the costs of lofty ambition and hubris just might outweigh even the most optimistic upside - and a thoroughly modern story of technology overtaking the very people it is meant to serve. In this case: the ubiquitous electric gun carried by cops everywhere and inspiring comedic shenanigans in movies like The Hangover. Host and documentarian Nick Berardini has been obsessed with this story for his entire adult life. With Absolute, Season 1: Taser Incorporated, he left no stone unturned. Taser, Inc., now known as Axon, the 800-pound gorilla in the paramilitary police equipment industry, is led by its charismatic CEO and co-founder, Rick Smith. Fueled by a self-described religious dedication, Smith’s Star Trek obsession, and an ambitious vision of a world without gun violence, Rick leads Taser, Inc. to be the key tech supplier to virtually every police force in America. But as stories of alleged misuse, deaths, and serious injuries from Tasers begin to emerge, Taser, Inc. and Rick arrive at a crossroads between Rick’s vision and reality, with cops and the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect paying the price.
