Michael is the co-founder and CEO of Prepared, the AI assistant for 911 calls that helps dispatchers capture information faster, translate emergency calls in real time, and deliver lifesaving context to first responders. Founded out of Yale in 2019, Prepared grew from a school safety app into a critical platform for emergency communications, disrupting a notoriously tough market. This mission-driven journey just reached a major milestone: Prepared was acquired by Axon, the global public safety technology company. In this conversation, Michael joins Meka to share the inside story of building in a tough market, the counterintuitive strategies used to crack government procurement, and why their mission is a competitive moat. In today's episode, we discuss: Why school shootings were the catalyst for building safety software Navigating the most challenging customer base: government and public safety agencies Why Prepared gave away its first product for free — for years Lessons from evolving a wedge product into an AI-driven suite How Michael balanced conviction with customer feedback Building long-term investor relationships Staying true to the mission through headwinds and tailwinds And much more… Where to find Michael: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelchime/ Where to find Meka: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mekaasonye/ Twitter/X: https://x.com/bigmekastyle Where to find First Round Capital: Website: https://firstround.com/ First Round Review: https://review.firstround.com/ Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/firstround YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FirstRoundCapital This podcast on all platforms: https://review.firstround.com/podcast References: Axon: https://www.axon.com/ Dylan Gleicher: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dylan-gleicher/ March for Our Lives: https://marchforourlives.org/ Neal Soni: https://www.linkedin.com/in/neal-soni/ OpenAI: https://openai.com/ Peter Thiel Fellowship: https://thielfellowship.org/ Prepared: https://www.prepared911.com/ Sam Altman: https://x.com/sama Slack: https://slack.com/ Uber Eats: https://www.ubereats.com/ Yale University: https://www.yale.edu/ Timestamps: (3:03) Staying mission-oriented under pressure (3:54) Negotiating an acquisition from a hospital bed (06:25) How Sandy Hook shaped the Prepared story (09:15) From school safety app to 911 platform (10:02) Why are 911 systems so outdated? Michael Landsberg discusses how the government shutdown could impact the release of economic data – and thus hit the Fed's decision making. He talks about the potential of lower rates throwing “gasoline on the fire” of a market that's already doing well. “The positioning of most people on Wall Street” is negative, he argues, meaning that retail investors could have an opportunity within the Mag 7 and major indexes. His other picks include Axon Enterprise (AXON) and SharkNinja (SN).======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. This episode comes from a joint Auror x Axon webinar hosted by the Loss Prevention Foundation (LPF) in August 2025. Auror's Bobby Haskins brings together Raul Aguilar, Brian Friedman from REI, Seth Hughes from Axon, and Lt. Eugene Kim from the Beverly Hills Police Department to share how connected responses to retail crime are changing what's possible. They open up about the toll crime takes on staff, the need for trust across jurisdictions, and the technology that is finally making collaboration faster and evidence more secure. From body-worn cameras to real-time intelligence sharing, the panel shows what happens when partners commit to building safer environments together. It's a candid look at the urgency of stopping organized retail crime before it escalates, and a call for retailers and communities to stand united in protecting both employees and customers. In this episode, you'll learn about:Why closer partnerships between retailers and law enforcement make stores saferHow technology is speeding up evidence sharing and prevention effortsWhat repeat offenders show us about the rising complexity of retail crimeJump into the conversation:(00:00) Brian Friedman, Seth Hughes, Lt. Axon, a company that makes policing equipment, developed new software called Draft One that takes recordings from police cameras and uses artificial intelligence to summarize them into incident reports. Many police departments trying out the tool are not disclosing that they're using AI to write reports, according to a Mother Jones investigation. That potentially leaves both prosecutors and defense attorneys in the blind — despite safeguards Axon built into its software to prevent this very scenario, and to remove errors or AI hallucinations. Marketplace's Nova Safo spoke with investigative journalist Tekendra Parmar who reported the story for Mother Jones.

Don and Tom kick off this episode by responding to a one-star Apple Podcast reviewer who promised to upgrade to five stars—if they correct their allegedly false Bitcoin claims. Challenge accepted. Don clarifies his earlier “nobody uses Bitcoin” remark by digging into the actual numbers: only 15,000 businesses worldwide accept it, out of over 359 million—roughly 0.0004%, making it statistically more rare than a lightning strike. They also break down the real costs of converting Bitcoin to dollars: while some exchanges charge under 1%, Bitcoin ATMs routinely charge 5–25% in fees, with total costs sometimes exceeding 30%. Then, a listener calls in with a ChatGPT-generated portfolio featuring VUG, VEA, SMH, and AXON. Don tears it apart for being tech-heavy, overly concentrated, and missing broad market exposure—ironically, even ChatGPT agrees with him. Listeners also get advice on why ETFs are gradually replacing mutual funds, when (if ever) annuities make sense, and why indexed annuities are the financial industry's version of timeshares: opaque, overpriced, and always sold, never bought. Despite the facts and the humor, Don doubts his five-star redemption is coming—but if Greg's Mowing and Septic accepts Bitcoin, there's still hope. 0:26 Don confronts repeat negative podcast reviewers 1:35 NavRep's public offer: “Correct your Bitcoin lies and I'll give 5 stars” 2:31 Bitcoin rebuttal: 15,000 businesses accept it—out of 359 million 5:13 Teaser: Bitcoin conversion fees part 2 coming up after the break 6:26 Don admits his imprecise “nobody accepts Bitcoin” claim 8:19 Clearing up the 8% Bitcoin conversion fee claim—context was ATMs 9:49 Bitcoin ATM fees average 17.5%, sometimes hit 30% 11:04 Exchange conversion under 1% is possible—but not for quick cash 13:10 Volatility and impracticality still make Bitcoin a poor currency 16:00 ChatGPT jokes: “Beer at a Baptist wedding” & “Greg the mower” 16:49 Caller Jason asks ChatGPT for a portfolio; Don and Tom cringe 17:46 ChatGPT suggested a tech-heavy, overly concentrated portfolio 20:40 Better suggestions: VT, AVGE, DFAW—not VUG/SMH/AXON 21:50 Don's GPT criticizes Jason's GPT: “No bonds, no value, no real estate” 23:43 Caller Scott nails TRM's philosophy and nearly retires Don 26:12 The rare “pros” of annuities—and their bigger downsides 28:24 Indexed annuities: regular income taxed as ordinary income 30:02 Betting against the house: how annuity math favors insurers 31:44 Caller Jane asks if ETFs are better than mutual funds 32:05 ETF settlement is faster, but that's not a reason to choose 33:30 Vanguard accounts support ETFs beyond their own funds 34:51 Updated: mutual funds now settle T+1, ETFs also T+1 36:26 Jane warned about National Life Group's indexed annuity pitch 37:07 Why Don hates indexed annuities: high fees, low returns, opaque structure 39:27 Still selling like hotcakes: $27B in indexed annuities sold Q1 2025 40:35 Wrap-up: annuities remain unethical despite legality and popularity Learn more about your ad choices. When officers respond to a call that seems routine — like a mental health check — they often have no idea how quickly that encounter could escalate. For Officer Alessandra Winterbauer of the Lincoln (Nebraska) Police Department, what began as a calm conversation with a confused subject turned into a life-or-death confrontation. Her ability to remain composed and rely on recent virtual reality training helped avoid a deadly outcome and led to her recognition with Axon's 2025 Jack Cover Save of the Year Award. Officer Winterbauer and a colleague were dispatched to check on a man experiencing a possible mental health crisis. After a calm 20-minute conversation, the man abruptly asked, “If I come at you guys with a knife, will you shoot me?” Moments later, he sprinted toward officers. Winterbauer deployed her TASER 10 from over 30 feet away — just minutes after completing VR-based TASER training. Her successful response neutralized the threat without serious injury, demonstrating the real-world value of immersive, high-frequency training. Absolute, Season 1: Taser Incorporated is at once a tale as old as time - a true believer learns the hard way that the costs of lofty ambition and hubris just might outweigh even the most optimistic upside - and a thoroughly modern story of technology overtaking the very people it is meant to serve. In this case: the ubiquitous electric gun carried by cops everywhere and inspiring comedic shenanigans in movies like The Hangover. Host and documentarian Nick Berardini has been obsessed with this story for his entire adult life. With Absolute, Season 1: Taser Incorporated, he left no stone unturned. Taser, Inc., now known as Axon, the 800-pound gorilla in the paramilitary police equipment industry, is led by its charismatic CEO and co-founder, Rick Smith. Fueled by a self-described religious dedication, Smith’s Star Trek obsession, and an ambitious vision of a world without gun violence, Rick leads Taser, Inc. to be the key tech supplier to virtually every police force in America. But as stories of alleged misuse, deaths, and serious injuries from Tasers begin to emerge, Taser, Inc. and Rick arrive at a crossroads between Rick’s vision and reality, with cops and the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect paying the price.
