Note: Episode was recorded prior to 7th October 2023. In this episode, we have the privilege of hosting Nadim Nashif, exective director and co- founder of 7amleh: The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, a Palestinian digital rights organization dedicated to defending Palestinian digital rights online and  amplifying Palestinian voices on the internet and social media platforms. We delve into the various tactics employed by the Israeli government and digital and  social media oganizations to suppress these voices, discussing legislative efforts and the impact on free speech. Nadim sheds light on the Israeli government's strategies to suppress Palestinian voices online, including the introduction of legislation enabling the Israeli cyber unit to prosecute violators. These measures aim to control and manipulate the narrative surrounding Palestine within Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. We explore the  International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) new definition and its use in attacking and censorship of any voices critical of Israeli policies. Nadim highlights the adoption of this definition by governments and social media companies operating in Europe, effectively preventing criticism of the Israeli government and suppresing, blocking resulting in the removal of Palestinian content. Our discussion delves into the biases exhibited by social media companies, particularly X and Meta. Despite Meta establishing an oversight board for content moderation, a clear bias towards Palestinian content is evident, leading to suppression, removal, and shadow banning. This contrasts starkly with the treatment of content critical of Israel which is rarely moderated.Nadim provides valuable insights on digital rights and cybersecurity. 7amleh supports activists and Palestinian civil society by offering guidance on safeguarding online information and privacy and in re enabling disabled accounts. The organization assists activitis and civil socity in providing them resources to counter various digital security threats to safeguard their work.We address the issue of misinformation generated by artificial intelligence. Nadim highlights biases in AI-generated content, emphasizing the importance of pushing for positive, accurate narratives. We discuss the need to counter smear campaigns that undermine the credibility of Palestinian content online.Our conversation delves into Meta's oversight board and its policies, which display a noticeable bias towards Israeli interests. We explore the direct coordination between Meta and Israeli cyber units, raising concerns about fair content moderation.Nadim offers crucial advice to content creators, emphasizing the importance of diversifying platforms. Only 20 trucks made it in yesterday, and zero the day before.Some aid, like COVID-19 tests, isn't immediately relevant to the pressing needs of Gaza, while hospitals and clinics are running out of all essential supplies and are over crowded and over stretched.Over 1.1 million residents displaced and living without fuel, water, food, elecricity and power. UNRWA's Vital Role:UNRWA is the main logistical partner for getting aid into Gaza. They process and distribute items, including to hospitals and food warehouses.Despite the immense efforts, the need far exceeds the available resources in this unfolding humanitarian catastrophe with residents living without fuel, water, food, electricity, power and over 1 million displaced from their homes.Overcrowded Shelters:640,000 Palestine refugees are housed in 150 UNRWA facilities, often at three times their capacity.This overcrowding leads to significant mental health and trauma issues.Personal Connection:Hani's family is in northern Gaza, an area facing severe challenges. Today on the show, we had the privilege of hosting Basel Adra, a distinguished journalist and resident of Masafer Yatta, located in the South Hebron Hills of the occupied West Bank. Basel shed light on the longstanding issue of ethnic cleansing and forcible expulsion faced by the community at the hands of the Israeli army and illegal settlers.During our conversation, Basel delved into the historical background of Masafer Yatta, emphasizing its geographic significance and the decades long struggle against the Israeli army that designated more than 12 of Masafer Yatta privately owned Palestinian lands, as fire zone areas to undergo miltiary exercises as a means to illegal confiscate more land that is given to the settlers to build and expand their illegal settlments and build farms on Palestinian lands. Settler numbers continue to increase and physcial assaults against the Palestinian residents and school children is a daily occurence.He highlighted and exposed the daily war crimes committed by the Israeli army and settlers, such as the demolition of homes and schools, as well as the relentless attacks on the residents' properties and livelihoods including the regular demolition of schools denying children their universal right to an education.We delved into the distressing reality faced by the inhabitants of Masafer Yatta, who endure constant assaults and trauma as their homes and schools are forcefully displaced and demolished. In the face of this daily onslaught, we explored how the community manages to survive and endure.Our discussion also touched upon grassroots and global activism, exploring ways in which we can unite to provide support to the community of Masafer Yatta.Basel provided personal accounts as both a resident and a journalist, recounting his efforts to document and report on the struggles faced by the residents. Today on the show, we welcomed Rabbi Brant Rosen who founded in 2015, Tzedek Chicago, a non-Zionist and social justice focused synagogue with its core values creating Jewish spiritual communities rooted in values beyond Zionism, where he serves as a Rabbi. Rabbi Rosen is also co-founder of the Jewish Voice for Peace Rabbinical Council and he chronicles his path towards Palestinian solidarityand Judaism beyond Zionism in his blog, Shalom Rov.We discussed Rabbi Rosen's founding of Tzedek Chicago, his pro Paestinian activism, the growing movement within the US to end the Israeli occupation, within the American Jewish community and the current Israeli government and the intersectionality of global social justice movements. Well recognized 1uote by Rabbi Rosen on his solidarity with the Palestinian people:“The cornerstone value of my religious tradition commands me to stand in solidarity with all who are oppressed? Today on the show, we welcome director and producer of Italian and Palestinian descent, Vin Arfuso, whose directorial debut film Walled Off is co-produced by Palestinian American model and musician Anwar Hadid, and a star-studded collaboration that includes Pink Floyd's Roger Waters. The documentary screened  in October to raving reviews in Italy and NY, and follows their journey through occupied Palestine, and, as they explore the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, owned the iconic and anonymous British artist Banksy. The film intertwines the timeline of the occupation through art and sheds the lens on the harsh reality of the occupation along with the documentaries powerful capture of the faces, voices and firsthand account of Palestinian children as they share their personal stories growing up and living under occupation.We discussed the inspiration behind the film, Vin and Anwar's first trip to Palestine and the most challenging and most powerful moments experienced behind the camera, during production in Palestine.We also discuss Walled Off's success in artistically challenging the Western media narrative regarding Palestine and depicts the absurdity of the occupation. We tap into Vin's childhood and what led to his activism, how he deals with any Israeli backlash, and what impact he wishes resonates with the audience as they watch Walled Off. Upcoming screening planned in Doha, Qatar and we discuss additional screening dates and official release on screening platforms. 

On this weeks episode, we welcomed distinguished Jerusalem based film maker, writer and director Najwa Najjar and we delved into her extraodinary work in film, including in both documentary and fiction.Her critically acclaimed films include Eyes of a Thief, Between Heaven and Earth and Pomegranates and Myrrh, among others.We discussed her passions for film making, how living in the occupied Palestinain territories inspires her story telling and work and her creative process.We also discussed the biggest challenges filmmakers face in the occupied territories, recurring themes in her critically acclmaimed films revolving around identity and homeland and the callenges faced by Palestinian produced films to be screened on mainstream western media and on  major platforms.We also discussed Najwa's views on art washing the occupation through entertainment and cultural appropriation. 

Today on the show, we welcome renowned Palestinian multidisciplinary artist Khaled Jarrar whose acclaimed work has earned him international recognition and multiple awards, as he explores the realities and impacts of Occupation and modern-day power struggles through artistic interventions utilizing various forms of media, including performance art, photography, sculpture, installations and film. Khaled's viral and well recognized work includes the State of Palestine Stamp exhibited at the Beaux Arts in Paris, among others.We discuss Khaled's first hand experience of growing up and living under occupation in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, the epicenter of Israeli daily genocide and illegal raids angst the Palesitnian people and how this has shaped and influenced his art and self expression.We discuss Khaled's brilliant work that explores the impact of modern day power struggles on ordinary citizens while seeking to maximmize the social potential of artistic interventions and the evolving art scene and realities of being an artist in the occupied alestinian territories. We also discuss the Jenin refugee camp which was the scene of one of the deadliest genocides being committed by Israel against the residents of the camp, during the 2nd Palestinian intifada, uprising. We also discuss art as a healing outlet, where words fail, for children in Jenin and across Palestine, to process traumatic events they experience living under Israel's brutal occupation and the unsurmountable daily stress, anxiety and unheald trauma through art workshops and artist led initiatives that offer means for Palestinian children to vent their trauma.

Today on the show, we welcomed Darin Sallam, film director of the new film Farha, that narrates the story of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba and is inspired by a true story told through the eyes of a 14 year old Palestinian girl, and depicts and articulates the truth about this historical Palestinian catastrophe when more than 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from Palestine and entire villages and towns wiped out, in the creation of the state of Israel. The film is streaming on Netflix and is the official submission to the 2023 Oscars by Jordan.While the Israeli government has been up in arms in their attacks and attempts to censor the film, millions have positively rallied around the powerful depiction of the 1948 Palestinan Al Nakba in the film, as Farha beautifully shares a 14 year old girls account of the atrocities committed in the creation of the state of Israel.Farha is a must watch for any one keen to learn the truth on the Palestinian catastrophe, ie Al Nakba of 1948 as to understand the signifcance of this historic genocide that is still playing out daily in the Occupied Palestinian territories where the Israeli state continues to ethnic cleanse Palestinian cities, towns and villages and entrench its illegal occupation and apartheid practices.
