In this episode, we commemorate Al Nakba for the 77th year. We trace the story of one Palestinian family displaced from the al-Baqa‘a neighborhood in West Jerusalem during the 1948 Nakba. From Victoria's memories of fleeing her rose-filled home to her grandson Majdi's search for what was lost, we explore how memory, loss, and resilience are passed down through generations. Through personal testimony and historical context, this episode reflects on what it means to reclaim narratives, and why Palestinians continue to remember, resist, and return.Thank you for tuning into This is Palestine, the official podcast of The IMEU! Zeina Azzam, a Palestinian American who is poet laureate of Alexandria, writes longingly about her ancestral home in Palestine while celebrating her American identity, often peppering her English poetry with Arabic. Azzam, 68, came to the U.S. at the age of 10 after living in Homs, Syria and Beirut. Her parents fled their home in Haifa in 1948 when Zionist paramilitary forces drove more than 750,000 Palestinians from their homes to establish the Israeli state. The Zionists were largely European Jews who themselves suffered through centuries of displacement, antisemitism, and genocide. This mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians is called Al Nakba, or The Catastrophe, and ignited a refugee crisis that's lasted decades. Today, Israeli settlements continue to displace Palestinians in the West Bank. This history has fueled both Israel and Hamas to conduct violent strikes and retaliations. Next month, VCIJ at WHRO will profile an Israeli-American. Azzam has made a colorful and happy home in Alexandria, decorated with cultural emblems from the Arab World, fig trees and jasmine plants. Her poem, “Write My Name,” has gone viral with its vivid description of children surviving in war-torn Gaza. Azzam read the poem before the United Nations Palestinian Rights Committee, and the verse has been translated into multiple languages. Speaking independently, not as the Poet Laureate of Alexandria, she shared stories about her life as a child of refugees in America, Al Nakba, the Israeli-Hamas War and her hope for the future.

Palestinians refer to it as “Al Nakba”, which literally translates as “The Catastrophe”. It refers to the mass exodus of at least 750,000 Arabs from Palestine. Though most believe this event began in 1948, in fact, Al Nakba began decades earlier. Mercedes and James speak to Omar Jabing of Free Palestine Mebourne about the commemoration of 75 years of Al Nakba. We speak about how Israel capitalises on the sale of weapons off the backs of Palestinian people, the ever-increasing illegal occupation and theft of land, the surveillance and censorship by Israel and the powerful ongoing resistance by Palestinian people.

Today on the show, we welcomed Darin Sallam, film director of the new film Farha, that narrates the story of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba and is inspired by a true story told through the eyes of a 14 year old Palestinian girl, and depicts and articulates the truth about this historical Palestinian catastrophe when more than 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from Palestine and entire villages and towns wiped out, in the creation of the state of Israel. The film is streaming on Netflix and is the official submission to the 2023 Oscars by Jordan. While the Israeli government has been up in arms in their attacks and attempts to censor the film, millions have positively rallied around the powerful depiction of the 1948 Palestinan Al Nakba in the film, as Farha beautifully shares a 14 year old girls account of the atrocities committed in the creation of the state of Israel.Farha is a must watch for any one keen to learn the truth on the Palestinian catastrophe, ie Al Nakba of 1948 as to understand the signifcance of this historic genocide that is still playing out daily in the Occupied Palestinian territories where the Israeli state continues to ethnic cleanse Palestinian cities, towns and villages and entrench its illegal occupation and apartheid practices.
Alon Schwarz's searingly straightforward feature documentary TANTURA takes a deep dive into the tape-recorded words “erase it” as those two words take on new weight in the context of history and war. When the State of Israel was established in 1948, hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated in its aftermath. Israelis know this as the War of Independence. Palestinians call it “Al Nakba” (the Catastrophe). In the late 1990s, graduate student Teddy Katz conducted research into a large-scale massacre that had allegedly occurred in the village of Tantura in 1948. His work later came under attack and his reputation was ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain. Director Alon Schwarz revisits former Israeli soldiers of the Alexandroni Brigade as well as Palestinian residents in an effort to re-examine what happened in Tantura and explore why the Nakba is taboo in Israeli society. The now elderly ex-soldiers recall unsettling acts of war while disquietly pausing at points they either don't remember or won't speak of. Audio from Katz's 20- year-old interviews cuts through the silence of self-preservation and exposes the ways in which power, silencing, and protected narratives can sculpt history. Between 1917 and 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to leave their homeland at the threat of violence in an event called "Al Nakba", meaning "The Catastrophe" in Arabic. In this episode, my guest and I discuss how the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and the 1947 United Nations partitioning of Palestine created an environment which delegitimized Palestinian rights to their own land, and paved the way for ongoing Palestinian expulsion. The term "Nakba" was banned from Israeli schools in 2009, illustrating the significant ongoing struggle for recognition that Palestinians face, and highlighting the exact reason why this topic should not be allowed to be erased from history.

Then, Zeyad of Palestinian Youth Movement speaks to us on May 15th, Nakba Day, where nearly 10,000 people, families, children, and allies took to the streets that day in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and against the on-going Israeli settler-colonialism and violence. Each year on May 15, Palestinians around the world commemorate Al Nakba, or 'the catastrophe' – the day in 1948 that the state of Israel came into being, marking the start of forced expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homeland. The genocide against Palestinians continues today. Just this week, violence against Palestinians has spiked, specifically in the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Poet and human rights advocate Sara Saleh has recently co-compiled a resource titled 'Supporting Sheikh Jarrah from the Australian Colony'; we speak to her about how we can support Palestinians on the frontline from here, how the conversation around this ongoing violence is changing, and how she sees writing as a form of resistance. Sara reads her poem Border Control: Meditations, which just won the 2020 Overland Judith Wright Poetry Prize. You'll be able to read it in Overland soon. You can subscribe here. If you feel you have some gaps in your understanding of the continuing Israeli violence against Palestinians, we highly recommend having a listen to Episode 10 of REVOLUTION NOW PODCAST, 'Palestine in a Podcast' – a generous and comprehensive run through the history of Palestine, the current situation in Sheikh Jarrah, and everything in between. May 15 marks the 72nd anniversary of what is billed in the U.S. and Israeli mainstream media as Israel’s “independence,” and what the Palestinian and Arab peoples as a whole know as al-Nakba—the Catastrophe. To make way for the creation of the Israeli settler state, more than 80 percent of the Palestinian population was driven out of their homeland by means of terror. Washington played an irreplaceable role in the formation of Israel. The U.S. government continues to provide billions of dollars annually and vast supplies of modern weaponry to perpetuate Israel’s continued role as a key instrument in U.S. domination of the strategic Middle East region. In 1948 the Arab-Israeli war caused the displacement of approximately 700,000 Palestinians as they fled from their homes in an area that would later become Israel. In this episode of Deep Trouble Dr Mark Halloran is in conversation with internationally recognised Palestinian activist Dr Olfat Mahmoud, founder of the Palestinian Women’s Organisation (PWHO). Dr Mahmoud is a Palestinian refugee, born in a refugee camp in Lebanon 58 years ago, whose life mission is to fulfil the dream of her family to return to their hometown, Tarshiha in Palestine. Dr Mahmoud recounts the war of 1948, known to Palestinians as Al-Nakba (the catastrophe), which resulted in her grandparents fleeing from Tarshiha at gunpoint into the refugee camps of Lebanon. We talk about the psychology of exile and how her book charts the stories of three generations of women in her family; a story of great love, as well as grief and loss, for friends and family as well as for her homeland. Dr Mahmoud also discusses the history of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) and its work of protecting refugees in Lebanon as well as how she feels that the international community has been complicit in its silence whilst Israel has broken various UN resolutions. We also discuss her horrifying experiences during the massacres in Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon in the 1980s, where she worked as a nurse, and her claim that the Israeli army under then defence minister Ariel Sharon, were complicit in allowing the Lebanese Christian Militia to perpetrate these war crimes. Finally we talk about the hopes for Palestinian refugee’s right to return, with Dr Mahmoud stating she feels hope is still there but that these hopes are ‘frozen’. Tears for Tarshiha is the chronicle of Dr Mahmoud’s lifelong fight to return to her homeland.
