Have you ever wanted to tell your child’s therapist *exactly* how you feel about therapy homework? Or remind them just how many other therapy appointments you have scheduled this week. Or maybe just explain to them that... you want to be mom, not play the role of therapist today. In today’s episode, I’m joined with guest and fellow disability parent Alex Farha to go through all the things that parents from this community wish they could say to their child’s therapists. We cover all kinds of topics, but at the end of the day, I think we mostly just want to remind therapists that our disabled and medically complex kids are children too, and whatever therapy activities they are expected to do should account for that. This episode was so cathartic to record with Alex, and I think every parent who has ever had a child in therapy is going be nodding their head the whole time. Dr. Omar Farha of Northwestern University and NuMat Technologies talks about Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF's) that he prefers to call "programmable sponges." Hailed as a potential defining material of the 21st century, these nano-sized structures can be used to neutralize toxic materials, pull water out of the moisture in the air and eventually, capture carbon emissions that threaten the planet.  The Pentagon is investing in this technology to create military clothing that can be used on chemical warfare battlefields.  "The sky's the limit," says Dr. Farha, in discussing the potential uses of programmable sponges.  Dr Farha's personal story is a classic: the immigrant from a poor family in the West Bank of the Palestinian Territories who overcomes big obstacles and achieves great things that could change our world.

Joining Lowkey on this special episode of “The Watchdog”  is the creator of the Netflix film, “Farha”, a movie the Israeli government has gone to great lengths to prevent from reaching the masses. Darin J. Sallam begins the episode with a breakdown of her award-winning film…It's the story of a 14-year-old Palestinian girl whose dream is to get an education in the city…the dream changes from getting an education in the city to surviving in a room that she was locked up in by her father to protect her life when the Haganah soldiers invaded her village.”The Haganah, a Zionist military organization, was heavily involved in the Nakba, a systematic campaign between 1947 and 1949 to ethnically cleanse Palestine of its indigenous peoples. During this period, at least 750,000 Palestinians were forcefully expelled by such militia forces. Over 70 massacres were committed, more than 15,000 Palestinians were killed, and 520 villages were destroyed.  Lowkey draws a comparison between his music and the film, both of which have been smeared by Israeli lobbyists as inciting violence. He asks Sallam how she responds to the Israeli government figures claiming the film is a form of incitement. She responds that,It is based on true events and this killing scene that they're very upset about is just a drop in the ocean…it's nothing compared to what happened…they have a problem watching the truth…They can't silence our voices and they [Israel lobby] try to just stop the film of streaming on Netflix…we will not accept this, and we will keep speaking our side of the narrative and make our voices reach everywhere.”Sallam also describes how she was able to get her creation on Netflix. After the film screening in Toronto, the film started touring festivals around Europe. It's literally like everywhere now. In Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, everywhere, and then after a year and a half, we met with Netflix, and they acquired the film to stream it worldwide. I think this is one of the things that made them [Israeli officials] very angry…” Darin Sallam is a Jordanian writer and director. holds an MFA from the Red Sea Institute for Cinematic Arts (RSICA) and has published a number of award-winning films, including “Still Alive”, “The Dark Outside” and “The Parrot”. Watch the whole interview here, exclusively at MintPress News. Support the showThe MintPress podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. Today on the show, we welcomed Darin Sallam, film director of the new film Farha, that narrates the story of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba and is inspired by a true story told through the eyes of a 14 year old Palestinian girl, and depicts and articulates the truth about this historical Palestinian catastrophe when more than 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from Palestine and entire villages and towns wiped out, in the creation of the state of Israel. The film is streaming on Netflix and is the official submission to the 2023 Oscars by Jordan. While the Israeli government has been up in arms in their attacks and attempts to censor the film, millions have positively rallied around the powerful depiction of the 1948 Palestinan Al Nakba in the film, as Farha beautifully shares a 14 year old girls account of the atrocities committed in the creation of the state of Israel.Farha is a must watch for any one keen to learn the truth on the Palestinian catastrophe, ie Al Nakba of 1948 as to understand the signifcance of this historic genocide that is still playing out daily in the Occupied Palestinian territories where the Israeli state continues to ethnic cleanse Palestinian cities, towns and villages and entrench its illegal occupation and apartheid practices.

A polarising new film has been released worldwide on Netflix. "Farha", by Darin J. Sallam, tells the story of a Palestinian teenager during the Nakba, or catastrophe, of 1948. Supporters say the film tells a true Palestinian story, rarely seen on a mainstream platform like Netflix. But critics say it is inflammatory and smears the Israeli military. We take a closer look and get analysis from FRANCE 24's Oliver Farry.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Jordanian filmmaker Darin J. Sallam joins Parallax Views to discuss her feature-length debut film Farha. Written and directed by Sallam, Farha tells the coming-of-age story of a brave, curious young woman (played by Karam Taher in a tour-de-force acting debut) living in 1948 Palestine who dreams of going to the city, receiving an education, and becoming a teacher. Farha's life is irrevocably altered, however, when Israeli military invade her Palestinian village in a series of violent events that have become known in the Arab world as the Nakba or "The Catastrophe". Farha is a deeply moving story of survival that attempts to shed light on a story Palestinian Arabs have passed down through the generations and may well mark the first feature-length film that isn't a documentary to feature the Nakba as a key element of its story. In this conversation Darin and I discuss a number of topics including: - Her experiences directing the film - Working with the cast, which included such well-known actors of the Arab world as Ali Sulliman of the TV series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and Ashraf Barhom (The Kingdom, Paradise Now); the casting of the lead character - The meaning of the title Farha and how it refers to not only the main character but the Arabic word for "Joy" - The development of the movie, the difficulty getting funding, and depicting the events of the Nakba in a thoughtful manner - The emotions that came out during the filming of the production especially amongst the Gazan refugees who served as extras in the film - The motif of water in the movie - The accusations of antisemitism that have been made against Farha - Whether or not the story of Farha ends on a hopeful note - The approach taken to depicting the Nakba in Farha; why Darin chose not to show gory violence - Farha as a universal, humane story which can speak to many different people - The passing down of the story of the Nakba throughout the generations and putting that story to film - Does Darin see a bit of Farha in herself? - The positive reactions to the film thus far - Telling the truth - Farha as not just a story about the Nakba but a story about love, community, loss, trauma, and memory - Liberation and loss; the open wound of the Nakba - Being thrust into traumatic events without a choice; surviving the trauma and living because one must do so - Farha being submitted to the Academy Award - And much, much more! In the second segment of the show, journalsit Andy Worthington, author of The Guantanamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America's Illegal Prison, joins us to discuss the unsettling history of military torture and detainment at Guantanamo Bay since 2002. Guantanamo Bay has been in the news, at least within the alternative media sphere again, after former Gitmo prisoner Mansoor Adayfi claimed in an interview with Mike Prysner of The Empire Files and Eyes Left Podcast that he was tortured by U.S. 2024 Presidential hopeful Governor Ron DeSantis at the infamous military prison. This conversation is a bit interesting as when it was recorded Andy was skeptical that the timelines surrounding DeSantis' time at Guantanmo Bay lined up with Mansoor's testimony (although this is not to say that he thinks Mansoor was lying, but rather that the story needed more clarification). However, about five days after our initial conversation, Andy and I spoke again. At that point Andy had spoken with Mansoor in order to clarify the issues. This clarification appears to add more weight to Mansoor's claim and means that the DeSantis/Gitmo story merits serious investigation.  Among the topics discussed in this conversation: - The origins of Guantanamo Bay (alternatively known as GTMO or Gitmo) and the types of torture that went on there - A prison designed by the George W. Bush administration in the early days of the War on Terror to detainee terrorism suspects without much interference/oversight from courts with regards to what would go on there - Human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay - How was the veil of secrecy around what went on Guantanamo Bay pierced? - The "enhanced interrogation" euphemism - Guantanamo Bay in the Obama and Trump years -  Why has Guantanamo Bay not been shut down despite the controversy around it? - Obama's campaign promise to close the prison - The question of torture's effectiveness in dealing with terrorism - Former detainee Mansoor Adayfi's claims that Ron DeSantis, as a JAG officer, was involved in torture at Guantanamo Bay - The Guantanamo Bay hunger strikes of 2005 (and 2006) - Waterboarding - And much, much more

Lara shares that her grandfather died stateless, without a passport, and he's one of the millions of Palestinians for whom that is a daily reality. We also commemorate the passing of The People's Bubbie, longtime antizionist Jew, feminist, and abolitionist, Shatzi Weisberger. We end by briefly covering the zionist dust-up surrounding the new Netflix movie, Farha.

This week chief Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt called out the government on its lack of progress in implementing its Healthy Homes Standards, saying it puts New Zealand in breach of our international law obligations. Back in February 2020 those standards were commended by Leilani Farha, who was visiting at the time in her former role as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing.

Does the name Sam Farha mean anything to you? If it does, you're probably a fan of poker. Farha is a rather famous professional poker player. He is most know, however, for a hand he lost. In 2003 Farha was on the verge of elimination from the World Series of Poker Texas Hold ‘Em Main Event … the one you typically see on ESPN. In fact the 2003 tournament, and Sam Farha's role in it, helped make televised Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments a ratings boon for the network. Farha found himself down early after losing a big hand and almost dropped out voluntarily. Friends encouraged him to keep playing. He was a fairly accomplished player, mind you. And he did. And he won hand after hand. Farha reached the final table and meticulously worked his hands until only one man stood between him and his first-ever World Series of Poker title. That one man was a newcomer to the sport. The odds were certainly stacked in Farha's favor. But that one man was observant. He watched Farha for hours on that final table, looking for a tell. That is what poker players call some action a player takes or a reaction they have that indicates they either have a great hand. Or they have crap.  A poker tell is normally subconscious. The player “telling” as it were, doesn't even perceive they're giving away a hint as to what's in their hand. And to be more precise, it's not that they give away what's in their hand, but how good their hand is.  You see, the art of playing poker is the art of keeping your opponents guessing. Do you have a good hand when you place a big bet, so they should fold? Or are you bluffing, so they should call or raise to put the pressure back on you to stay in and not lose any money.  The newcomer standing between Farha and his first World Series of Poker bracelet was Chris Moneymaker. Hell of a name for a poker player, right? Well, it was a hell of a case of foreshadowing, too. Moneymaker studied Farha for hours playing at that final table and noticed he did something different when he was bluffing versus when he had a strong hand. He tapped his cigarette on the table.  At a crucial point in the match, Farha went all-in with a pair of jacks. While that sounds like a strong hand, this is Texas Hold ‘Em, which uses the best five-card hand of seven cards. And going all-in means you're so confident you're going to win the hand, you're going all or nothing. If someone calls and you lose, you're out of the tournament.  Farha was bluffing to intimidate the rookie Moneymaker and chip away at the wagers he'd already bet in that hand. If Moneymaker folded, Farha would be that much closer to winning. But he tapped his cigarette. Moneymaker called. He had two pair. And they survived the final turn of the card to make the unknown accountant from Tennessee, the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion.  The prize that Farha saw fly away because Moneymaker spotted his tell? $2.5 million dollars. Did you know that influencers and content creators have tells too? I shared them in a LinkedIn Post a couple of weeks ago, but the ideas were so useful to many, I wanted to make sure you heard them too. Today on Winfluence, I'll share the five tells that reveal insights about an influencer that throw up red flags and often make me choose someone different.  This episode of Winfluence is presented by Tagger, a complete influencer marketing management solution. In this Reboot Republic Rory talks to Leilani Farha, former UN Rapporteur on the Right to Housing, and director of the Shift, the new global movement for the right to housing. Leilani and Rory discuss a new direction for housing – where housing is understood and implemented as a human right to address the global housing crisis. In particular, they discuss the financialization of housing – where governments have brought investor funds – the vulture and vampire funds – into their housing markets, only to have them take over housing stock, and increasing rents, turning a Generation into their tenants, locking them into unaffordable rents and locking them out of home ownership. Leilani introduces the new Shift Directives which she and her organization have recently developed with input from global experts, as a proposal for Governments to tackle the financialisation of housing and tame the investor-fund takeover of housing.
