Lindsay Aime remembers the moment his Haitian immigrant community came under a national spotlight. It was September 2024 when then-presidential candidate Donald Trump accused Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, of eating people's pets. To Aime, who is originally from Haiti but has lived in Springfield since 2019, the accusation was not just absurd. It felt like Trump was portraying his entire community as criminal.Today, the estimated 10,000 Haitian immigrants in Springfield are under a different sort of spotlight. The Trump administration is trying to revoke the legal status that allows hundreds of thousands of Haitians and other immigrants to live in the US. Those moves are being challenged in court, but many are feeling panicked and confused. Aime is the co-founder of the Haitian Community Help and Support Center in Springfield, a resource for immigrants looking for legal advice, especially now. “We don't have any good news,” he says. “We keep telling all our people who come in our office: Stay safe, stay safe, stay safe. Stay out of trouble.”On this week's episode of More To The Story, host Al Letson talks with Aime about what it was like when all eyes were on his community during the election, why returning to his home country is not an option, and the challenges of trying to reunite with a son still living in Haiti.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Nikki Frick | Interim executive producers: Taki Telonidis and Brett Myers | Host: Al LetsonDonate today at Revealnews.org/moreSubscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weeklyFollow us on Instagram and BlueskyListen: Trump's Deportation Black Hole (Reveal)Read: Bomb Threat Prompts Evacuation of Springfield, Ohio, City Hall (Mother Jones)Read: After Jailing of Newark Mayor, DHS Official Warns of “More Arrests Coming” (Mother Jones) Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

In this video, I explore the true meaning of “politics” and how understanding its roots can help us move beyond overwhelm and into action. We'll look at history for guidance—where systems fail us, where they offer hope, and how we can take small yet meaningful steps toward change. One of the voices that inspires me is Marija Gimbutas, a Lithuanian archaeologist and anthropologist who uncovered evidence of matriarchal societies in "Old Europe"—cultures rooted in peace, equality, and cooperation. Her work reminds me that another way is possible, and that we have the power to shape it.I'll share what I see as the two essential pillars for reclaiming our power: the path of prayer and the path of action. These together form a stable foundation for meaningful work in the world. Along the way, I'll provide links to resources—books, films, and organizations—that can help you connect with movements for change, including plant-protecting initiatives across the country. We are not powerless. Small steps matter. I'll show you how to start.————MY ONLINE COURSES

It's been so disheartening to see outlandish and offensive rumors about Haitian immigrants in Springfield Ohio turn into bomb threats, harassment, and arson. But it's also not surprising. It's the inevitable consequence of dangerous extremist rhetoric.During last week's debate, we saw Donald Trump attack immigrants at every turn. And JD Vance just admitted on television that he shared the story about Haitians in Springfield despite knowing it was a lie. “If I have to create stories,” he told Dana Bash of CNN, “then that's what I'm gonna do.”But that kind of negative messaging, those attacks on our neighbors, don't sit well with suburban women. And they certainly don't appeal to young people. This week we're joined by Olivia Julianna, an inspiring Gen Z activist.Olivia tells our hosts that young people care about the same issues as other generations - issues like affordable housing, abortion rights, gun violence, and childcare. So when we talk to the young people in our lives about voting, she advises us to start by asking what they care about. What issues affect them every day? Chances are, you'll be able to connect those issues back to policies that have a tangible impact on their lives. If you want to support Haitian immigrants in Ohio, Community Refugee & Immigration Services and the Haitian Community Help and Support Center are good places to start.Next week, we'll be taking a short break from The Suburban Women Problem to share a 3-episode miniseries about immigration called The American Fabric. Hosted by Rachel Vindman, this series will debunk myths and misinformation, examine what can be done politically, and give immigrants a chance to tell their own story. It'll appear in the regular podcast feed on Wednesday September 25th.For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. Sure, I could spend time today handwringing over a second Trump assassination, but I've become desensitized since they just keep happening - much the way America is desensitized to gun violence. So, since the GOP says there's nothing we can do about curbing access to weapons for nuts, why bother? Instead, there's more to know about that goings on in Springfield, Ohio, where a rust belt city's renaissance is largely due to the influx of legal immigrants. Instead, the focus is drawn to a since-retracted social media post that Senator JD Vance still insists carries legitimacy because it casts a negative light on Haitian migrants, and well, because his boss, Donald Trump repeated it on the debate stage and can't be embarrassed by being misled by nonsense, right? While Vance is in Atlanta today to speak to southern evangelicals (seemingly not about what the Bible actually says about being welcoming to the migrant) I was joined today by a pastor in Springfield offering a simple, yet timely message to his city's immigrant community: "I'm glad you are here. Christ loves you, and so do I." That message, being handed out throughout the community to Haitian immigrants, is the sentiment of Pastor Carl Ruby of the Central Christian Church in Springfield. Pastor Ruby does a nice job explaining how his community got to where it is now, why he offers his message to the immigrant community and how we can all pitch in to help by visiting the Haitian Community and Support Center if so inclined to. (PayPal here) Of course, I have some of Vance's back-n-forth with Dana Bash from yesterday, as well, and his umbrage to her quoting the (Republican!) mayor of Springfield casting blame squarely at his and Trunp's rhetoric for all that community's dealt with since last Tuesday night. It's inarguable - as is the downward spiral from the 1980 GOP and its position on immigration (not far from where Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is now) to where that party and its presidential ticket stands today.

Over one million people in the United States are living with Parkinson's Disease. This is a chronic, progressive neurologic disorder that can affect people in their 20's to their 90's, however, most are diagnosed in their 60's. Of course, given the progressive nature of the disabilities associated with PD, the disease affects thousands more spouses, children, and other caregivers. There is some good news in that a renaissance is taking place in Parkinson's research and therapeutic development. The Michael J. Fox Foundation is leading the charge toward a world without Parkinson's disease. Joining Cheri Hill today is Dr. Mindy Lokshin of The Parkinson Support Center of Northern Nevada founded in 2021 so that no one has to face Parkinson's disease alone. pscnn.org Sageintl.com

They're responding to a bill introduced by Gov. Kim Reynolds that would overhaul the agencies. But while AEAs provide valuable resources and training to educators and families across Iowa, many say they have room for improvement. One is how they serve the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. That was justone message shared with 12 legislators and about 100 parents, students andeducators at a forum at the Educational Leadership and Support Center in CedarRapids on Saturday.Several of the 30 people who spoke at the forum said deaf and hard-of-hearing children's needs are not being met — and sometimes are ignored — by AEAs.Vania Kassouf, a deaf advocate and virtual instructor in American Sign Language, toldlegislators that Grant Wood AEA uses limited and outdated expertise for deafchildren. She supports AEAs' services for children withspecial needs but says deaf education should be separate from special educationJohn Speer, chief administrator of Grant Wood AEA says the AEAs are “not a perfectagency,” and getting people together to discuss additional updates is essential. But he adds if the governor's updated bill is enacted, “what we'll have is amore chaotic, less equitable and a more expensive system.”The most recent version of Gov. Reynolds' proposed bill would allowschools to opt out of the AEAs' special education services and seek them elsewhere.A Senate subcommittee advanced the bill last Wednesday. This week Steve and Yvonne interview Jordan Strokovsky of Strokovsky LLC (https://actionafterinjury.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review View/Download Trial Documents Case Details: Jordan won his client a $30 million recovery against Temple University Hospital in one of the largest medical malpractice cases in Pennsylvania's history. Despite the hospital's denial of wrongdoing, Jordan refused their offer of $3 million and prepared tirelessly for court to ensure a just outcome for his client. The hospital admitted fault and the jury awarded $25.9M to Jordan's Mr. Parks ($6M for future medical costs and $20M for pain and suffering) after a comprehensive investigation and a hard-fought trial. The hospital hired three law firms in an attempt to overturn the verdict and offered a settlement less than the awarded amount. Jordan's client refused to settle, and Jordan won every argument against the big firms. The court refused the hospital's request to reduce the verdict, and $3.7 million in delay damages were added. The total recovery now exceeds $30 million, including over $600,000 in interest. No appeal was filed. Guest Bio: Jordan Strokovsky Jordan Strokovsky is a trial lawyer serving the catastrophically injured in a diverse range of cases, including medical malpractice, birth injury, truck accidents, fires, explosions, plane crashes, premises liability, product liability, workplace injuries, toxic torts, civil rights, car accidents, and sexual assault. His hard work ethic, integrity, and compassion earn him the trust of his clients and the respect of his opponents. These attributes have also helped him obtain significant verdicts and settlements. For good reason, many lawyers refer or seek to co-counsel their serious injury and wrongful death cases with Jordan. Jordan handles countless catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases and routinely handles cases pro bono to help his community. His volunteer work includes taking a civil rights case to verdict with the Volunteer Attorney Panel of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, representing victims of sexual abuse with the Support Center for Child Advocates, and successfully handling various cases from Philadelphia VIP. He has been recognized by the court for his service and was a featured volunteer by Philadelphia VIP. As an animal lover and dog owner, Jordan has also championed animal rights causes, helping establish that pets should not be viewed as property under the law. He also serves on the Pennsylvania Association for Justice Board of Directors and has previously served on boards for non-profits that help animals, homeless people, and refugees. Jordan is the former co-chair of the State Civil Litigation Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association and was proud to help implement town halls at the start of the pandemic, which allowed the court and legal community to communicate during those uncertain times. He now co-chairs both the Civil Rules and Wellness Committees at the bar association. Jordan has served as an adjunct law school professor and occasionally speaks at seminars to other personal injury lawyers. He is also regularly asked by news outlets to provide legal commentary. Jordan graduated from Widener University Delaware Law School as Valedictorian of his class, where several of his professors would comment that his academic performance and mind for the law were among the most impressive they had ever seen. While in school, he interned with three Philadelphia judges: the Honorable M. Faith Angell (E.D. Pa), the Honorable Arnold L. New (Common Pleas), and the Honorable Paul P. Panepinto (Common Pleas) and used these internships as opportunities to get in the courtroom and watch many trials. He was also a member of the Law Review. After his commencement speech at graduation, the Governor of Delaware declared that he would never want to follow Jordan in speaking again. While practicing law full-time, Jordan obtained a Master of Law in Trial Advocacy at the nationally renowned Temple University Beasley School of Law LL.M. Program in the Spring of 2018, where he received special recognition from the faculty for his trial performances and was a jury favorite—earning the highest scores from the jury at his showcase trial. This is episode 1 of a 4 part series on constructing housing for IDD adults! “Please listen to the parents, and understand their passion will drive them to success. Believe us…You won't just be helping us, and our kids, you will be solving an incredible social problem.” If you hear any background noise or laughter - that's because this podcast was recorded LIVE from the Nuts and Bolts Conference in Colorado Springs in November 2023! Barbara Ziegler is the Board president of the Trailhead Community. Here's more about Trailhead Community that can also be found on their website: Trailhead Community was originally inspired by the success of Stepping Stone Support Center, a sister company established in 2013. The Support Center provides prevocational and life skills training, job placement, job coaching services, social events and community connection. It now serves more than 100 individuals with developmental disabilities to live meaningful and productive lives. With this success in one aspect, it became quickly evident that another important piece was missing for adults with developmental disabilities: Homes of their own! The individuals we work with are first and foremost ADULTS. Like all adults, they deserve to live independently in a place of their own. So in 2016, a group of parents, Stepping Stone staff and other friends all came together for the purpose of creating a non-profit to address this need. Stepping Stone Communities was born and the mission established: creating and designing an extraordinary opportunity for people to come together in an integrated and intentional apartment community! After hundreds of hours of research and discussion, Stepping Stone Communities selected its first project- Trailhead Community, an apartment building with 77 units for both adults with DD and members of the general population with plenty of community space for meals and recreation. This was an ambitious project and it has grown since then! The final result is an 83 unit complex where 50% of the units are allocated for adults with developmental disabilities and the other 50% for neuro-typical residents. The building will include state-of-the-art technology and “Universal Design” features to promote independence and safety for all residents. A cooperative management model will integrate all residents to make decisions about how their community will operate! There will be on-site concierge staff to provide 24/7 oversite for the building, social events, meal preparation and encourage mutual exchange and support between tenants. The building will have many unique and intentional features to promote community including a sport court, sound-proof multimedia room for music, large screen viewing and mini jam sessions, an art studio, fitness room, a community kitchen and common dining room serving optional meals daily, and large common areas both indoors and outdoors! On the outskirts of Atlanta, we drove past the waterfall, walked through the front doors, and stepped into a world of positivity and smiles. Each delivered through a well-rehearsed cocktail of sincere stories that provided a peek into why this “chicken business” is a homebase of hope and life-change for so many. One small business is a powerful, accessible opportunity for so many teenagers and adults to engage in their community, develop relationships, solve problems, earn income, and develop powerful and usable skills. A collection of aligned small businesses, if well led and obsessively focused on vision, mission, and values, has the opportunity to scale the hope and life-change beyond one or two locations. This is the opportunity for Chick-Fil-A. Indeed, their chicken sandwich is remarkable, use of “my pleasure” noticeable, and waffle fries laced with a special serum of deliciousness - and their support of local small business is a Master's class of intentional scale. It is not lost on the Support Center staff that their primary purpose is the support of the almost 500,000 team members among the chicken-diaspora across North America (and soon to be other International markets). You cannot walk a meaningful distance in their appropriately named Support Center without confronting a well-broadcast corporate purpose, mission, unique set of values, and foundational principles. Purpose is as pervasive as a number one combo meal on a Saturday after the little league game or dance competition. Purpose is intentionally over-communicated with three distinctives that were tangible and delivered in a kind, sometimes goofy package of care as defined by competence and warmth. Truett Cathy took one restaurant and built the systems and the team to scale that one restaurant to nearly three thousand. That is good news for business owners with one location or three…with two employees or thirty. What scales up, can also scale down. There are three simple elements on display at Chick-Fil-A central for the exponential spread of culture that require the grit of an entrepreneur and the roll-your-eye goofiness most entrepreneurs struggle to hurdle. The first of these three simple elements is consistency. One task completed with consistency over a long period of time makes a mark. One task completed without consistency is a fad with little impact. Inherent within consistency is the concept of a fanatical and firm footing, a concrete base with very little movement that can be trafficked relentlessly. Faith is placed in solid things because reliability, albeit goofy, beats the in-the-moment hipster vibe of trendy unsteadiness. How can Chick-Fil-A ensure the now famed “my pleasure” is repeated millions of times daily? Relentless consistency…even when it is goofy. The second element that leads to the exponential spread of culture is amplification. Pandemics spread through amplification; genetic copies spread from carrier to carrier at high speeds with consistency. Your local municipal water system might be distributed through amplification. A series of pump stations systematically placed throughout the distribution channels of the pipes that run throughout your city or town. Each pump offers a boost to the system so that the home furthest from the source has the same pressure as the home closest to the source. Messages too spread through amplification. A small group of message carriers spread their consistent message to other carriers over and over again. That message requires the third element that leads to the exponential spread of culture…repetition. “Repetition is the mother of all learning”; a refrain my first manager would share with me…repetitively. I've heard it said, “if you are not annoying someone with your message, then you know your message is not landing.” We tend to look down on repetition as non-innovative. Truthfully, our real struggle is with repetition void of meaning, warmth, sincerity, care, empathy, and intentionality. Business owners look around and wonder why the big companies are “lucky” to have great culture. At the Chick-Fil-A Support Center, consistent, amplified, and repetitive messaging is…well, consistent, amplified, and repetitive. Not requiring a degree, or the “right conditions”, business owners big and small have an opportunity to rinse and repeat.
