He co-founded and served as the coordinator of the grassroots group Youth Against Settlements from 2007 to 2018. Amro advocates for nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience to address the Israeli Occupation of the Palestinian Territories. In 2010, he was named "human rights defender of the year in Palestine" by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In 2013, the United Nations Human Rights Council expressed concerns about his safety due to harassment from Israeli soldiers and settlers and a series of arbitrary arrests. Currently, Amro faces 18 charges in an Israeli military court. In May 2017, Bernie Sanders, along with three U.S. senators and 32 congressmen, wrote to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urging Israeli authorities to reconsider the charges against Amro.

SUPPORT US! This is part one of our look back at 2023. From Palestine to a myriad of protests; from the climate crisis, to police terror, to the African Sahel: this year was a time of continuing and tremendous crisis for the world's global majority. And it was a time of resistance and for challenging U.S. empire like never before.  When international human rights activist Issa Amro visited Washingon, DC in January 2023, dozens of Palestinians in the West Bank had already been murdered in the new year by IDF soldiers and illegal Jewish settlers. Also at the start of 2023, the brutal beating and murder of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police, captured on surveillance camera, reinforced the systemic nature of police abuse in the United States. This show also includes my conversation with 2016 GREEN party presidential candidate Jill Stein at the  MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR PEOPLE'S NEEDS, NOT THE WAR MACHINE March 18th 2023 near the White House. Those opposed to President Biden's approval of the Mountain Vally Pipeline rallied outside the White House on June 8. And this year "On the Ground" joined individuals and organizations around the United States and world in honoring the 125th birthday of  the artist and revolutionary Paul Robeson.  Voices: Issa Amro, the Rev. Al Sharpton, NeeNee Tay, Gerald Horne, Crystal Cavalier-Keck, Jason Crazy Bear Keck, archival audio of Paul Robeson. The show is made possible only by our volunteer energy, our resolve to keep the people's voices on the air, and by support from our listeners. Every day the Palestinian civilian death toll is rising dramatically as Israel continues with its genocidal bombing and ground invasion of Gaza, and as settler and military violence towards Palestinians in the West Bank intensifies. "It's a closure, it's a curfew, in many places in the West Bank," Issa Amro says. "It's not normal life these days. Soldiers are everywhere, settlers are everywhere, people are afraid to leave their homes, they don't go to work, they don't go to school, they don't go to universities." After losing touch with Issa during the day because he was escaping from settlers who were chasing him in Hebron, we managed to reconnect over the phone and record a nine minute conversation about the hell working people in Palestine are going through right now and what their fellow workers in the US and Canada can do to stop the slaughter. Issa Amro is a Palestinian human rights defender living in Hebron, in the Occupied West Bank. He is the co-founder and former coordinator of the grassroots group Youth Against Settlements. Days prior to this recording, Issa was evicted from his home in Hebron and tortured by Israeli troops.   A note about the audio: After hours of silence and failed phone calls, Issa contacted Max to inform him that he was temporarily safe and had 10 minutes to speak over the phone. Dropping everything he was doing, Max quickly opened his computer, began a QuickTime recording, and called Issa on speakerphone. We apologize for the sub-par audio quality. Strength & Solidarity Season 5 will start in November. Meanwhile we're repeating some of our favourite shows, continuing with episode 27,  first released,  December 8, 2022. Palestinian activist Issa Amro grew up studious and apolitical – until his university was permanently shuttered in 2003 by the Israeli military in response to the second intifada. The campaign he and others launched to get it reopened was successful but as the full reality of the Israeli Occupation struck home, he decided to commit to non-violent activism and has been organizing in his community ever since. Almost two decades on, a senior UN official has called 2022 the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since 2005. In this episode, Amro explains how he and others have, over the past two decades, built a resilient movement, focused especially on young people, to resist the violent seizure of Palestinian property by illegal settlers and harassment by Israeli security forces. And in the Coda, a Colombian human rights worker tells us how dancing Salsa lifts her spirits.  For a list of supplemental readings and additional information about this episode's content, visit https://strengthandsolidarity.org/podcasts/ Contact us at pod@strengthandsolidarity.org

Today on the show, we welcome the well-recognized Palestinian human rights defender and activist Issa Amro who joins from the heart of the old city of Al Khalil, Hebron in the occupied West Bank. Issa is also the Founder of Youth Against Settlements. We discussed the situation on the ground in occupied Hebron, the Huwara pogrom, Masafer Yatta and how activists in the diaspora can support these communities facing daily harrassment, apartheid and ethnic cleansing by the occupation army and armed Israeli settlers. We discussed the pogrom committed in Huwara that led to Israeli settlers burning farms, vehicles and over 30 homes  and destroyed the livelihoods of hundreds of families.Issa updated us his recent visit to the US and visits to occupied Hebron by local and foreign activists and groups, including guided tours organized by Breaking the Silence Israel.Follow @issaamro on Instagram and twitter for daily updates on occupied Hebron and living under a brutal occupation and apartheid.

For this episode of "The F-Word," we hear from world renown Palestinian activist Issa Amro, awarded by the United Nations for his non-violent resistance to the Israeli government, which he says is an openly fascist regime. He spoke recently at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Northeast DC and was introduced by the Israeli American author and activist Miko Peled. With more than 50 Palestinians, including 11 children, killed by Israeli soldiers this year, and violent attacks on communities by Jewish settlers rubber-stamped by the Netanyahu far-right government, activists say that it is urgent to organize the type of international Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement that was mounted against the apartheid government of South Africa.  The show is made possible only by our volunteer energy, our resolve to keep the people's voices on the air, and by support from our listeners. He is the recipient of the One World Media Award in 2009 and recognized as Human Rights Defender of the Year in Palestine in 2010 by the United Nations. He is the founder of the Hebron-based direct action group Youth Against Settlements. UN Special Rapporteurs reported that Amro had been arrested and detained by Israel more than 20 times in the year 2012 alone. Amro was featured in Amnesty International's global Write for Rights campaign in 2017 to support him through his trial in Israeli military court. In winter 2021, Amro was convicted on six charges related to his community activism, including three counts of participating in a protest without a permit.” The trial was criticized by prominent human rights organizations, international lawmakers and independent UN experts. He was also prosecuted by the Palestinian Authorities for “causing public strife” and insulting higher authorities” on social media under the draconian cybercrime law and 1960 Jordanian penal code. Amro has sporadically been arrested, jailed, tried and harassed by Palestinian authorities since 2017. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media and to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon at - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Follow Katie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/kthalps
