    Blessings and Curses

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2025

This message is about the great reversal found in Luke 6:20–26, where Jesus declares blessings not on the wealthy and comfortable, but on the poor, the hungry, and the persecuted. In a world that chases status and success, Jesus flips the script: true blessing is found in dependence on God, not in material abundance. Those who weep and hunger now, who are hated for His name, will find joy, satisfaction, and reward in God's eternal kingdom. But Jesus doesn't stop with blessings—He gives a sobering warning. Woe to those who laugh now, who are full and praised by all, for they've already received their reward in full. It's not that success is evil, but when comfort leads to spiritual complacency, when laughter mocks righteousness, and when popularity replaces truth, the soul is in danger. We're called to trust not in our wealth, reputation, or comfort, but in Christ alone—who became poor, so that through Him, we might become eternally rich.

Are you ready to run the race set before you? Life isn't a casual stroll—it's a race that requires endurance, focus, and freedom from the weights that hold us back. Scripture tells us in Hebrews 12 to lay aside every burden and the sin that so easily entangles, and to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Like the ancient runners who stripped off everything that slowed them down, we too must shed the distractions, doubts, and worldly pressures that keep us from running well.Graduates, church family, this message is for all of us. We are not alone on this journey—surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, from biblical heroes to faithful mentors in our own lives, we are cheered on to persevere. Let us look not to the applause of others or the weight of our past, but to Christ, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him. As we run this race, may we do so with eyes fixed on Him, hearts free of every hindrance, and a spirit eager to hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Run well.

    Mother's Day: A Faithful Generation

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2025

In Psalm 78, we see a call to action: to listen, to learn, and to pass on the truth of God's Word to the next generation. We are not merely keepers of knowledge, but stewards of a living faith meant to be shared and multiplied. Whether you're a mother, a father, a grandparent, a teacher, or a mentor—this responsibility is yours. The psalmist reminds us that our stories, our testimonies, and the wondrous works of the Lord must not be hidden. We must speak them boldly so that the children of today become the faithful leaders of tomorrow.God's design has always been generational—truth passed down, faith lived out, hearts turned toward Him. Let us be those who teach with intention and lead by example, who shape a faithful generation by proclaiming the strength and the glory of the Lord. And if we're worried about the direction of today's youth, let that concern move us to action. Teach them. Disciple them. Show them Jesus. Because you never know how far your faithfulness might reach.

Are you poor in spirit, hungry for righteousness, or burdened by persecution? Then hear the words of Jesus from Luke 6: "Blessed are you." Not because of worldly success, but because the kingdom of God belongs to those who know their need. Jesus turns the values of the world upside down—He doesn't bless the wealthy and powerful, but the humble, the hungry, and the hurting. His message cuts against the grain of the prosperity gospel and points us instead to a reward that is eternal, not earthly. So rejoice when you are reviled, leap for joy when you are hated for the sake of Christ—because your reward is great in heaven. Jesus is not calling us to comfort but to faithfulness. And when we embrace the Beatitudes, we don't just receive encouragement—we receive the promise of God's kingdom. This is the blessing of following Christ: not ease, but endurance; not applause, but eternal life.

    Jesus Appoints Twelve Apostles

In Luke 6, we see Jesus spend the whole night in prayer before making one of the most important decisions of His ministry. If the Son of God, fully divine and fully man, prioritized prayer before choosing the twelve apostles, how much more should we seek God's will through prayer and Scripture in our own lives? Before stepping into a new season, a new challenge, a new calling — stop and pray. God hears, and He answers according to His perfect plan. And then, Jesus calls twelve very ordinary men — fishermen, tax collectors, even a zealot — and transforms them into the foundation of His church. Different backgrounds, different strengths, yet united in one mission: to be sent out with the good news. And so are we! Though we are not apostles like the Twelve, we are sent ones, called to carry the gospel to our world. Trust the Scriptures, live as disciples, and boldly share Christ, knowing He sees not just who we are now, but who we can become by His power.

He is risen! And that changes everything. This Easter, we remember not just an event, but a revolution in history and in our hearts. The tomb was found empty, not because His body was taken, but because death was defeated. The stone was rolled away—not so Jesus could get out, but so we could see in. We're not here just to remember a story—we're here to live transformed lives. So when trials come, when life surprises us, we don't crumble—we trust the God who brings life from death, the God who still moves stones.Jesus told us what would happen: He would be handed over, crucified, and rise again on the third day. And He did. Just as He said. So today, the question is not just “Did it happen?”—the question is “What will you do with it?” Will you live like Jesus is alive? Will you remember His words and walk in His power? The resurrection is not just a moment in time; it's a call to new life. Let's respond in faith, because He has risen—He has risen indeed!

    Palm Sunday

On this Palm Sunday, we remember the moment Jesus rode into Jerusalem—not on a warhorse, but on a humble colt, fulfilling ancient prophecy and declaring himself the true Messiah. The crowd shouted, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” They laid down their coats, waved palm branches, and lifted their voices in worship. But this celebration was more than a parade—it was a proclamation of a King who came in peace, not power. A King who would trade a throne for a cross. But let us not be like the crowd who praised Him one day and cried “crucify” the next. Let us be like the unnamed owner of the colt—quick to give, quick to obey, and ready to let go of whatever the Lord requires. Jesus is worthy of all honor and glory, and even if we stayed silent, the stones themselves would cry out. This week, as we enter Holy Week, may our hearts be stirred to worship, to sacrifice, and to follow our Savior who walked willingly toward the cross—for you, and for me.

Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath

In Luke 6, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and declares something bold: “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” He's not just redefining tradition—He's reminding us what the Sabbath was always meant to be. The Pharisees saw it as a day filled with burdens, rules, and restrictions, but Jesus shows us it's a gift—a day made for us to rest, to be refreshed, to reconnect with God. And when compassion and human need meet tradition, Jesus makes it clear: mercy wins every time.So I ask you—are you keeping the Sabbath like a law or living it as a blessing? Do you see time with God as an obligation or as an invitation? Jesus didn't just talk about compassion; He demonstrated it, restoring a man's withered hand and revealing God's heart. Let's be people who follow His lead—resting well, loving deeply, and putting people before our preferences. Because the same Jesus who is Lord of the Sabbath is Lord over all, and He's calling us not into religion—but into relationship.

In Luke 5, Jesus responds to the Pharisees' questioning about why His disciples do not fast, unlike the disciples of John the Baptist or the Pharisees themselves. Jesus explains that fasting is not needed while the bridegroom—referring to Himself—is present. He uses this moment to introduce a new way of thinking: His ministry is not about patching up the old but bringing something entirely new, like new wine in new wineskins. The old religious system can't contain the radical transformation Jesus brings.Through two powerful parables, Jesus illustrates the incompatibility of the old and new covenants. Just as a new patch on an old garment or new wine in old wineskins would be disastrous, trying to patch together Judaism with Jesus' teachings won't work. The new covenant requires repentance, regeneration, and a new form of worship, emphasizing a personal, transformative relationship with God. Jesus calls us to understand why we practice our faith and to embrace the changes He brings—no longer bound by traditions, but freed by His grace. As we reflect on this, we are encouraged to share the good news with others and grow deeper in our walk with Christ.

    Jesus Calls Levi

Jesus calls us to radical transformation, just as He called Levi, the tax collector, to leave everything behind and follow Him. Levi, later known as Matthew, was a man despised by society, yet Jesus saw past his sin and called him to a new life. This is the heart of the Gospel—Jesus doesn't seek the self-righteous, but those who know they need Him. When Matthew answered the call, he didn't hesitate; he abandoned his wealth, his position, and his past to walk with Christ. What about us? Are we willing to surrender everything that holds us back and follow Jesus completely?Following Jesus isn't about maintaining comfort—it's about transformation. When Matthew embraced his calling, his first response was to invite others to meet Jesus. He hosted a feast, gathering the outcasts and sinners, showing us that the call to Christ is also a call to share His love. But the Pharisees scoffed, missing the heart of Jesus' mission: He came not for the well, but for the sick; not for the righteous, but for sinners. So today, the question remains—are we clinging to our own righteousness, or are we humbling ourselves before the Savior? Will we let go of what holds us back and step into the life-changing grace of Jesus Christ?

For God so loved the world—these words hold the fullness of the Gospel in a single breath. John 3:16 is more than just a verse; it is the very heartbeat of God's redemptive plan. Before the foundation of the world, before sin entered, before we even took a breath, God had already prepared the way for salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. This is not a love that wavers, not a gift that fades, but the ultimate expression of grace—the giving of His only begotten Son, so that all who believe in Him may not perish but have eternal life. Today, we stand in the shadow of the cross, beholding the greatest gift ever given, a gift not earned by works but received by faith, transforming hearts, renewing minds, and securing an eternal hope in Christ. So I ask you, church—what is the greatest gift you have ever received? Not something that rusts, fades, or is forgotten, but a gift that brings life, a new heart, and an eternal inheritance. The Gospel is not about our striving but about God's mercy. Jesus, the perfect Lamb, bore our sins, took on the punishment we deserved, and through His resurrection, shattered the power of sin and death forever. This is the message that changes everything. It is not just an invitation—it is a call. Look to Jesus, believe, and receive the life that only He can give.

Jesus has the power to heal, but more importantly, He has the authority to forgive sins. In Luke 5, we see a powerful moment where a group of friends, driven by faith, stop at nothing to bring a paralyzed man to Jesus. They tear through a roof, lowering him before Christ—and in response, Jesus not only heals the man but forgives his sins, proving His divine authority. The Pharisees question Him, but Jesus demonstrates that He is more than a healer; He is the Son of God, the one who came to seek and save the lost. This passage challenges us: Do we have a faith that overcomes obstacles? Are we willing to do whatever it takes to bring others to Jesus? And when God moves in our lives—whether through healing, provision, or even in suffering—do we glorify Him? The same Jesus who forgave and healed the paralytic is still at work today. Will you trust Him, follow Him, and bring others to Him?

He reaches out, touches the man, and declares, “I am willing. Be cleansed.” Immediately, the disease is gone. This moment isn't just about physical healing—it's about the deeper cleansing that only Jesus can bring. Just as leprosy separated this man from his community, sin separates us from God. But through Jesus, we can be restored, made new, and brought back into fellowship with Him.This is the good news of the Gospel! Jesus didn't come just to heal sickness—He came to heal our souls. His authority isn't just over disease, but over sin and death itself. He calls us to turn from our sin, put our faith in Him, and be made whole. Jesus calls us not just to believe but to follow. In Luke 5, we see Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen encounter the authority of Christ in a miraculous way. After a fruitless night of fishing, Jesus tells them to cast their nets once more—against all logic, against their own understanding. And what happens? Their nets overflow with fish, so much that their boats begin to sink! In that moment, Peter recognizes who Jesus truly is, falling to his knees in awe. But Jesus calls him to something greater: "Do not fear; from now on, you will be catching men."This is the call for us today. Jesus is not just a teacher, not just a miracle worker—He is Lord, and He calls us to leave behind what we once clung to and follow Him. Like Peter, James, and John, we are called to be fishers of men, to step out in faith even when it goes against our instincts, trusting in the One who holds all authority. Will we drop our nets? Will we follow? Let us respond, not with hesitation, but with full surrender to the call of Christ.

Jesus came with authority—not the authority of men, but the divine authority of God Himself. When He entered Capernaum, the people saw it firsthand. Unlike the teachers of the law, Jesus spoke with power, and even the demons recognized His identity, trembling before Him. He silenced them, cast them out, and healed the sick with a simple rebuke. No ritual, no hesitation—just the undeniable power of the Son of God. He came not just to teach, but to demonstrate that He alone has power over sin, sickness, and Satan.Yet, Jesus' mission was greater than one town. Though the people begged Him to stay, He declared, “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.” His purpose was not just to heal bodies, but to save souls. He calls us today, just as He called them then—to recognize His authority, to repent, and to follow. Will we receive Him, like the people of Capernaum, or reject Him, like those in Nazareth? Jesus returns to His hometown of Nazareth, stepping into the synagogue to read from the prophet Isaiah. He declares, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing,” revealing Himself as the long-awaited Messiah. At first, the people marvel at His words, but their amazement quickly turns to outrage. They cannot accept that the boy they watched grow up—Joseph's son—could be the anointed one. Their rejection mirrors the fate of prophets before Him, and in their hardened hearts, they drive Him out, seeking to kill Him. Yet, Jesus walks away untouched, for His mission is not yet complete. This passage challenges us: how often do we reject the truth because it comes from a source too familiar, too uncomfortable? Jesus was not just another teacher; He was the fulfillment of God's promise, bringing sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and salvation to the lost. The question remains—will we accept Him for who He truly is, or, like the people of Nazareth, let our own assumptions blind us to the Savior in our midst?

In a world filled with competing worldviews—from humanism to naturalism and syncretism—James reminds us that only a true biblical worldview draws us closer to God and reveals His promises to us. Temptation itself doesn't come from God; it arises when we're lured by our own desires. But by keeping our focus on God and viewing life through His Word, we can recognize the traps that lead to sin and find strength to persevere, ultimately receiving the crown of life that God has promised.Let's remember that every good and perfect gift comes from above, from our unchanging Father, who sent His Son to redeem us. In facing trials, we're called not only to endure but to grow in Christ, building character and learning dependence on Him. Just as Caleb saw the Promised Land by trusting God's promises, we are called to endure with faith, knowing God never fails. Today is the day to choose Christ, to reject sin, and to see the world through His eyes. This passage reminds us that Jesus holds all authority in heaven and on earth; He is Lord over all creation, our lives, and even our deepest doubts. The disciples themselves, standing on that mountaintop, were still wrestling with uncertainty, yet they stepped forward in faith to follow Jesus's call. Like them, we're invited to go into a world in desperate need of hope, carrying with us the life-changing message of salvation in Christ alone. This mission isn't bound by geography, culture, or circumstance—it's a call to reach all people, everywhere. Here in Key West, we face unique spiritual battles, but we don't go alone. Jesus promises to be with us always, empowering us through His Spirit to shine light in dark places. Through prayer, sharing the gospel, and living as disciples ourselves, we become a part of God's unstoppable work. In Colossians 3, Paul teaches us about the transformative power of Jesus in our family roles. When we come to know Christ, He doesn't just become part of our lives; He saturates every part of it, including how we relate to one another in the home. Wives are called to submit to their husbands—not in a way that's forced or taken, but as a willing gift of trust in his leadership. And husbands, we are commanded to love our wives with the same selfless, sacrificial love that Christ showed the Church. It's a love that doesn't depend on what we get in return; it's a love that gives freely, even when times are tough. This passage speaks to children as well, calling them to honor and obey their parents, a command that carries beyond childhood and into adult life. And for parents, especially fathers, we're urged not to provoke our children to resentment but to lead them with a balance of discipline and encouragement. Together, these roles form a picture of a Christ-centered family—a family that reflects Jesus' love and His order, and one that, despite its imperfections, finds God's blessing in obedience. Today, let's recommit to these roles, allowing our relationship with Jesus to guide and transform every relationship in our home.

In Colossians 3:1-17, we are called to walk in the new life that Christ has given us. We are no longer defined by our old selves, but we are a new creation in Him. As believers, we must set our hearts on things above, pursuing holiness and leaving behind the sinful ways of our past. God has called us to take off the old life and put on a new one, like clothing, adorned with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These are the qualities that should define our relationships with one another in the body of Christ. We forgive as we've been forgiven, and love binds it all together in perfect unity. The peace of Christ should rule in our hearts and in our church, guiding us in all that we do. When we live this way, Scripture becomes our life's manual, teaching us how to follow Jesus in word and deed. Whether through teaching, worship, or song, the Word of Christ should dwell richly among us, leading us to live every moment for His glory. In Colossians 2, the apostle Paul warns the church in Colossae, and us today, to beware of three dangers: legalism, false worship, and man-made teachings. These new believers in Christ were facing immense pressure from outside forces—Roman culture demanding the worship of false gods, Jewish leaders rejecting Christ as the Messiah, and even false teachers within the church adding burdens to their faith. Paul's message is clear: salvation is through Christ alone. Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is complete; we don't need to add anything to it. Jesus plus nothing equals salvation.Paul reminds us that we must hold fast to Christ, the true head of the Church, and not be swayed by the teachings of men or practices that lead us away from the simplicity of the gospel. Legalism, false worship, and man-made systems might look wise, but they are of no value in bringing us closer to God. Christ's death and resurrection have won the victory, and our faith in Him alone secures our salvation.
