It appears in Irish mythology and maritime lore as a mysterious, often vanishing land, and has intrigued mapmakers, explorers, and storytellers for centuries. Here's a detailed overview: Origins and Name Etymology: The name Hy-Brasil likely comes from the Irish “Uí Breasail,” meaning “descendants (or clan) of Bresal,” an ancient Irish clan. It has no connection to the modern country of Brazil, despite the similar name. It was sometimes referred to as the "Isle of the Blessed" and was associated with paradise-like qualities. Myth and Folklore In Irish myth, Hy-Brasil was a hidden island, often shrouded in mist and only visible once every seven years—though even when visible, it could not be reached. It was described as a place of great beauty and abundance, sometimes even as a utopian society or a land of advanced knowledge and technology. Some versions of the legend say it was home to wise sages or priests with powerful secrets. Cartographic Appearances Hy-Brasil began appearing on medieval maps as early as the 14th century, often west of Ireland or southwest of Galway Bay. It was included on several well-known maps: The 1325 portolan chart by Angelo Dalorto The 1375 Catalan Atlas As late as the 1800s, some maps still included it, sometimes depicted as a circular island split by a river. Explorers and Sightings Over the centuries, several explorers claimed to have seen or tried to visit Hy-Brasil. In 1674, Captain John Nisbet, sailing from France to Ireland, allegedly encountered the island and described it as inhabited and fertile. Other 17th-century reports added to the myth, suggesting that travelers who reached it were granted knowledge or returned with riches. Modern Interpretations Lost Island Theory: Some speculate Hy-Brasil could be a memory of a real island that has since sunk, or a misidentified location like the Porcupine Bank (a submerged plateau west of Ireland). Paranormal & UFO Lore: In 1980, Hy-Brasil was mentioned in the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident, where a map reportedly shown to one witness (under hypnosis) contained coordinates matching the supposed location of Hy-Brasil—adding to its modern mystery appeal. Cultural Legacy The island has inspired works in literature, music, and art, symbolizing the unreachable ideal, a lost civilization, or mystical knowledge. It continues to appear in fantasy and speculative fiction as a place of wonder and enigma.

A research team at University of Galway has revealed that Storm Éowyn generated the highest storm surges ever recorded at key locations on Ireland's western seaboard. By analysing sea level information from 47 datasets provided by the Irish National Tide Gauge Network and the Office of Public Works, the team based at the University's School of Engineering have highlighted the unprecedented power of the storm's surge - more than 2.5 metres above the normal predicted tidal water level. Storm Éowyn, one of the most powerful storms to hit Ireland in recent years, also saw record-breaking winds. The highest gust recorded was 184 km/h, with the highest 10-minute wind speed reaching 142 km/h at Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station in County Galway. Storm Éowyn highest storm surges ever recorded Despite the severity of Storm Éowyn in other ways and the devastation wrought by hurricane force winds and lasting damage to power and water supplies, the timing of the tides during storm landfall meant little to no flooding impacts. The research team highlighted data from three coastal locations during Storm Éowyn - Galway Port, Limerick Docks and Shannon Airport. At Galway Port, the storm surge peaked at 2.60 meters above the normal predicted astronomical tide, the highest ever recorded at this station since its operation began in 2007 At Limerick Docks the highest surge along the western coastline was recorded - reaching 2.99 meters above tidal level At Shannon Airport, the tidal gauge recorded surge of 2.70 meters. Had these surges occurred a week earlier during the high water spring tide, the water levels would have been much higher, with data predicting that the water level at Galway Port would have reached 4.96m, Limerick Dock at 5.85m, and Shannon Airport at 5.43m above mean sea level, inundating the areas. Dr Indiana Olbert, School of Engineering at University of Galway's College of Science and Engineering, said: "Extensive research suggest that flooding has increased in frequency and severity in recent decades around the world and this is attributed to climate change. Our analysis of the drivers of flooding in Ireland show that the anthropogenic climate change - that's the changes related to human activity - will drive more extreme rainfall and generate more intense flooding. Such changes are likely to continue with further warming. In future we will witness more extreme weather events that will result in devastating floods. "Our analysis also shows that a rise in mean sea level rise will significantly increase the risk of coastal flooding in the future. The data we have recovered from the hours around Storm Éowyn shows just how narrowly tens of thousands of people avoided tidal inundation and threats to cities, towns and coastal communities. It is hard to imagine how narrowly we avoided unprecedented storm surge flooding and an inundation, in particular in towns and cities." Dr Niall Madden, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at University of Galway, said: "In spite of how devastating Storm Éowyn was, in an odd way, we were incredibly lucky. The worst of the storm surge coincided with a low and ebbing tide. Had it hit just a few hours earlier, on a full or flooding tide, Galway could have been dealing with a double disaster of record high winds and record high flooding." Inishmore is the largest of the Aran Islands of Galway Bay in Ireland and is an area consisting of 12 square miles. It is the largest island off the Irish coast with no bridge or causeway to the mainland. One of the most remarkable features of Inishmore island is the Poll na bPéist which translates as the "Serpent's Lair," relating to the legend of a reptilian sea monster from Gaelic folklore. Most of the locals just refer to it as the Wormhole. This is likely the most unusual sight you'll encounter if you ever explore Inishmore. It is truly considered one of Ireland's top hidden gems, because what you will behold is what appears to be an almost perfectly cut giant rectangle into the limestone floor. In a ground-breaking development for marine conservation in Ireland, two rare angel sharks (Squatina squatina) have been successfully tagged and released by scientists from the Marine Institute in Tralee Bay, County Kerry. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it is the first (and second) time ever that an angel shark has been fitted with an electronic tag in Irish waters. This marks a crucial step forward in the preservation and study of one of the most endangered shark species in Europe. The tagging, carried out by the Marine Institute in collaboration with local fishers, is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the EU as part of the Biodiversity Scheme. Dr Ross O'Neill, a licenced tagger with the Marine Institute worked with local fisherman Michael Peter Hennessy on board the MFV Lady K to successfully tag a male and a female angel shark. The successful tagging represents a vital contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at understanding the behaviour, migration patterns, and habitat preferences of this elusive species. The invaluable data collected by the tags will provide researchers with information that will inform future conservation strategies, aiming to safeguard the survival of angel shark in Irish and European waters. Dr Ross O'Neill expressed the significance of the achievement: "This is a landmark moment for marine conservation in Ireland. The angel shark is an incredibly rare species, making this recent encounter and successful tagging of two specimens in Tralee Bay all the more important. The tagging will allow us to track their movements and better understand how we can protect this species from further decline. It's an exciting development not just for Irish marine life but for global conservation efforts." Angel Shark Angel shark, also known as the "Devil's Banjo", is a slow-growing, long-lived, and vulnerable species historically found in waters from North Africa to Norway. Catches of the species by commercial and recreational fishermen were common in the Tralee Bay area historically. Reported numbers, however, have declined dramatically since the late 1960s, and today, encounters are extremely rare, and the species is now listed as "Critically Endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The success of the tagging operation in Kerry adds to the growing body of research focused on preserving these ancient creatures. These sightings also build on other recent observations of angel sharks west of Clew Bay by the Marine Institute and last summer in inner Galway Bay beside the Marine Institute's Headquarters at Rinville, confirming the importance of Ireland's west coast as a critical refuge for this endangered species. Tralee Bay Tralee Bay has been confirmed as one of the last strongholds for the angel shark species in Irish waters. Tralee Bay provides a habitat for several other rare and endangered sharks and their relatives, including the undulate ray, sting ray and the extremely rare white skate. Next Steps The tagged angel sharks were released close to their area of capture northwest of the Maharees peninsula and swam away strongly. The tags will log and transmit information for the next year, after which they will automatically detach from the fish. Researchers in the Marine Institute hope these data will uncover critical information about the species' preferred habitats, migration timings and movement behaviour and thus allow for more effective conservation measures to be implemented. It is hoped that more specimens will be similarly tagged in the coming months with the assistance of the local fishing industry. Community Collaboration Collaboration between local fishermen, the community and Marine Institute scientists is key to the success of conservation efforts. Generation Fleadh is launching this week in Galway city, and Sarah Slevin has been chatting to council member Eabha Leech. Eabha, a film studies graduate, gives some early and exclusive details of the festival, bringing film culture to young people across Galway City and County. Generation Fleadh runs from October 23rd to 26th 2024, and is the younger half of the Galway Film Fleadh for people aged 12 – 24. One of the biggest open water swimming clubs in the country will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.  From an initial membership of just three, Atlantic Masters Swimming Club has over 100 members and has achieved so much in the past 10 years from at least 100 crossings of Galway Bay to the big Channel Swims like the English and North Channel. It has also raised a vast amount of money for various charities including Cancer Care West, RNLI, OMCSU plus many more. To celebrate this achievement, the club will hold an exceptional anniversary night out in the Ardiluan Hotel on November 16th with a 3 course meal, wine reception and some very special guests. The Aran Islands lie in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. They're made up of Inis Mór, Inis Mearn, and Inis Oírr. People have likely lived on the islands since c. 3000 BCE. Late Bronze Age and Iron Age ruins scatter the islands, alongside old churches and holy wells. After the era of saints and pilgrimages, Elizabeth I unlawfully seized ownership of the islands in 1565 and in 1588, she sold them to the Lynch family. Oliver Cromwell took them back and passed them to his supporters. Absentee English landlords owned the islands until 1922. They boast such fascinating sights as the Wormhole, believed to be the home of a giant serpent, and the remains of the ancient forts. Galway's Joe Lyons is the Irish Senior Men's Amateur Close Champion.  He beat Galway Bay's Eddie McCormack 5&4 today in Kilkeel to successfully retain his title. Earlier, he beat Jim Carvill by just one hole in the semi-final, while McCormack overcame David Mulholland 4&3 to set up the all-Galway decider. Not long after successfully retaining the title, Joe Lyons joined Galway Bay FM's Darren Kelly on 'Over The Line.' == Galway golfer Joe Lyons and Belvoir Park's Gail Linter took home Irish Senior Men's and Women's Amateur Close Championships at Kilkeel on Friday evening. Karl Bornemann (Douglas) won the Irish Veteran Men's Amateur Close Championship and it was Sheena McElroy (Grange) who claimed the Irish Senior Women's Amateur Close Plate. Lyons and his good friend Eddie McCormack (Galway Bay) set up a massive final when they defeated David Mulholland (Castlerock) and Jim Carvill (Banbridge) respectively in the semi-finals. Lyons got in front early in the decider and was 2up heading down the back nine, he moved to 4up with five holes remaining and sealed his 5&4 win with a short putt on 14. “I was under a bit of pressure this week, I was a bit down in the Order of Merit and our European team is to be selected after this week,” said Lyons. “I'm delighted, I was +6 after nine in the stroke play and I thought I was on my way home, it's always nice to win. “A special mention for Eddie, we battled long and hard down the years and we're the best of friends and best of rivals as well. I'm sure he'll bounce back and he'll win plenty more.” Leading qualifier Deirdre Smith (County Louth) advanced to the final of the Irish Senior Women's Amateur Close thanks to a narrow win against Lisa Cullen (Killarney) while Linter had the same 2&1 victory over Tracy Eakin (Dooks). It was an enthralling final and when Linter missed her chance to seal the win on 18, she battled back and won with a birdie on the first extra hole. “I can't believe it, I wasn't expecting it,” said Linter. “I've come on the Seniors a few years ago but I would never have expected this in my wildest dreams.” Bornemann had a comprehensive win over Hugh Smyth (Mourne) in the semi-finals while David Brabazon (Balbriggan) was taken to extra holes by Patrick Madigan (Tramore). In what was another epic final, Bornemann finally grinded out a 3&2 victory. Fionnuala Halpin (Dun Laoghaire) booked her place in the final with victory over Shirley Real (Castletroy) and McElroy got the better of Carol McEnroe (Headfort). And it was McElroy who won 1up in the final.

Last weekend a team of four riders from Galway Bay Cycling Club were crowned this year's Mondello24 Cycle four person team Champions securing a new course record in the process. The team comprising of; Cathal Dillane, Ronan Burke, Liam Kilkenny and Kirill Korliakov embarked on their 24 hour cycle on the International Racing track in Kildare on Saturday at 12 midday.  A team with a diverse mix of cycling experience across a variety of disciplines, they had no experience of endurance racing, but that was all about to change. Cathal is the most experienced road cyclist of the four, cycling for over three decades with multiple race and stage wins under his belt and a Man of the Rás, this was his first time experimenting with an event of this nature. Ronan, an avid competitive road racer in recent years and Rás rider last year, had never ventured into the world of endurance cycling. Liam, a former competitive swimmer and Kirill are both fans and participants of multiple disciplines of cycling, however they were also completely new to this format of team and endurance racing which was both exciting and daunting in equal measures.  Embracing the unknown of the 24 hour challenge, the team cycled themselves into the history books of the Mondello24 Cycle event with a performance to be extremely proud of.  Managed by two time Solo Champion at Mondello24, Karen Cassidy, the team were in safe hands as she expertly steered them successfully to the finish line on Sunday midday and to a new course record. Completing 260 laps of the 3.5km track to finish with 902.2 km on the clock was a massive achievement. Whilst their endurance racing experience going into the event might have been lacking, their passion, determination and willingness to give full commitment across the 24 hours, to support, respect and learn from each other was in abundance, as was the desire to succeed, to give as much as they each individually could to the team, supporting each other on and off the track, epitomising the "all for one and one for all" spirit throughout the event. If you thought the challenge of Mondello24 was a step too far outside of your comfort zone to consider for yourself, then this chat will most definitely change your mind and give you plenty of food for thought, of what might just be possible when you gather a team of like-minded people with the same goal willing to go the distance collectively and individually.

Galway Bay Sailing Club have big plans for 2024. A major investment to the tune of €380,000 has gone into the club and its facilities and will be holding open information mornings on the 18th of May and the 8th of June.  The club has also appointed Johnny Shorten as their new training Centre Manager with the official opening next month and will host a stopover of the Round Britain and Ireland Yacht Race this week.  Johnny joined John Mulligan in studio on Saturday Sport.

Native breeds are often adapted to specific habitats. They graze in ways that promote plant diversity and can even help disperse seeds through their fur, fostering a healthy and balanced ecosystem. Reintroducing native breeds brings back natural-born pest controllers. Many native species have evolved alongside these animals, meaning they can help keep insect and rodent populations in check without relying on pesticides. Why is it important to reintroduce native breeds? Unlike larger cows, Dexters graze more selectively. They nibble on the dominant grasses, allowing wildflowers like knapweed, red clover, and birdsfoot trefoil to flourish. Healthy wildflower populations attract a wider variety of insects, which in turn become a food source for birds. The Ballyloughane project aims to create safe nesting and feeding areas for coastal birds by encouraging wildflower growth. Did you know… Fireblight is a highly contagious bacterial disease that wreaks havoc on members of the Rosaceae family, particularly those that produce pome fruits. Fireblight is a serious concern for Ireland, particularly for the horticulture and agriculture sectors. The temperate climate of Ireland is very suitable for the bacteria that causes fireblight, Erwinia amylovora. Fireblight can also enter through infected plant imports, which is a concern as highlighted by recent discussions on importing hawthorn for hedgerow planting. Why is it important stop the spread of fireblight? Fireblight can be incredibly destructive to apple, pear, and quince orchards, which are important agricultural industries in Ireland As previously stated, fireblight poses a threat to native plants like hawthorn, a vital component of hedgerows that provide habitat for wildlife and contribute to biodiversity. Fireblight leaves a scorched appearance on infected plants, making them visually unpleasant. This can be a concern for homeowners, public gardens, and landscapes. What can I do help stop the spread of fireblight? Learning the signs of fireblight is important. The early signs can include blackened leaves, wilted shoots and shepherd's crook branches. His Michelin-star restaurant Aniar does both, but it also feeds back into the local community on a much deeper level. His annual Food On The Edge symposium in Galway reaches even further afield, with its roll call of top chefs from all over the world. Which is why JP McMahon is one of the most influential people in European gastronomy today.The Dublin-born chef had his first food epiphany as a child while on holiday in Tipperary. While the rest of the family had burgers, he opted for a spaghetti bolognese, which was a revelation to the youngster. It set him on a course of discovery that would see him work in various kitchens, while also harbouring an ambition to become a writer. It wasn't until 2008 that he opened his first venture, a Spanish restaurant called Cava. It quickly won a reputation for serving some of the best tapas in Ireland, and it gave McMahon the confidence to embark on his most ambitious restaurant project to date.Aniar (meaning ‘west' in Gaelic) is a love letter to the produce and landscape of the West of Ireland and its rugged coast. Almost every ingredient used here is either native to the local region or from somewhere else in Ireland, whether it's foraged seaweed and Galway Bay oysters, or seasonal sea urchins and truffles. Terroir is the central theme, and although the menu changes daily, it is certain to have a distinctive local flavour that mirrors McMahon's cooking philosophy. Ocean Explorers has been running since 2006 and is supported by the Marine Institute. Ocean Explorers run the Ocean Champion School Healthy Oceans School Project and Awards which is the only ocean-themed award for primary schools in Ireland. The awards for schools include an Ocean Literacy Creative Award, the Marine Outdoor Award and the UN Sustainable Development Goals Award. Scoil Bhride in Shantalla took home this year's Marine Outdoor Award by the Marine Institute for their all school marines themed healthy ocean project, where they explored marine biodiversity, coastal erosion, traditional crafts and skills linked to working near or on the sea. Why is Ocean Explorers important for ocean literacy? It's a way for pupils to understand their own connection to the ocean, and how they can have an impact and influence on the ocean. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John Morley speaks to Dyson Ambassador, Dr Frankie Jackson Spence about how to tackle indoor air pollution.   Did you know… Ireland is ranked 28th globally for indoor pollution levels out of 39 countries studied according to a new report by Dyson focusing on indoor air quality.   There was a spike in indoor air pollution in Irish homes between 7pm and midnight in the survey.   Indoor air pollution are caused by PM2.5 particles which are invisible to the human eye.These particles are released through wood burners, gas cookers and heaters, ash and dust.   Indoor air pollution can also be released through gas pollutants emitted through cleaning, gas cooking and products such as body sprays, spray deodorants and candles ant through cleaning products.   Why is tackling air pollution so important? The European Environment Agency(EEA) considers air pollution to be the single largest environmental health risk in Europe.   According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), around a third of the global population(2.3 billion people) cook with inefficient stoves fuelled by kerosene and coal which can generate harmful indoor air pollution   Air pollution has been linked to health problems from various impacts on the respiratory system such as asthma and reduced lung function to cardiovascular diseases.   On average, women have a greater risk of being exposed to such health risk from the polluting fuels and technologies as they're more likely to be doing household tasks according to the WHO.   What can I do to prevent air pollution? Service gas appliances at least once a year   Use a dehumidifier to improve air quality   Open windows when cleaning to reduce effects from chemicals in cleaning products and use eco-friendly cleaning products instead   Reduce or cut out use of wood stoves and fireplaces   Use rollerball deodorants and body sprays instead of canned ones Here's a few websites if you want to know more! It's great to have you with us. Jo Thomas: Jenny, great to be here. Jenny Wheeler: You say up front that the sorts of books you write are about food, love, family, and fun. You like to have happy endings. And they are for people who like sunny and funny. Is that's how you started out your writing? Jo Thomas: It's really yes, because they were the books that I loved to read. And I would read authors like Katie Fforde, Jill Mansell and Milly Johnson. I wanted books that would take me to somewhere different where you felt that you would join in old friends? Like in the evenings, I can remember reading a Jilly Cooper and getting into bed at night and thinking, ‘I'm going to visit old friends down the pub.' And it's a nice place to be. I want people to feel that they care about the characters in my books and that they're with them through adversity and that they leave with hope and a smile on their face. When you start writing, people say, oh, write about what you know, and I thought, I don't know about anything. The only thing I like is food really. But I'm not a chef. I'm just someone who's interested in where their food comes from and then I thought why not write about the thing I'm interested in? I was in a restaurant in Galway, in Ireland with my husband and I was like, ‘I dunno what I'm gonna write about.' A perfect setting for Jo's first best seller I'd ordered some oysters and they put down this platter of oysters in front of me. And just for a moment, it stopped raining for a while. And I looked out the window and I was looking out over Galway Bay and the moon came and shone silvery shadow across the water and the candle was going in the window and it was like being in someone's front room eating these oysters. And I thought, this is sexy.

So the name "Irish Restaurant Company" may not be too familiar, but if I were to say Galway Bay, Killarney House, Brian Boru, Pirates Cove, or Egg Nog, you might perk up! Galway Bay is the best damn bar in Chicago and the two owners, Jason and Nolan, sit down at the live show to answer questions (from our live audience) and share stories from their years of managing one of the craziest places in Chicago.
