The tale of the first government led by the Earl of Derby (whom we first met as Lord Stanley), in which Benjamin Disraeli served as Chancellor of the Exchequer, from its start to its fall such a short time later. And then, the start of the Aberdeen government, in which the same post was held by William Ewart Gladstone, perhaps rather more successfully. He did have one major advantage, granted by simple circumstance, but even so, there's no denying he did better. So this is also the episode where we first meet the intense, and from then on lifelong, hostility between Gladstone and Disraeli. A hostility which led to battles between these two giants that would dominate three decades of British politics. And, in their confrontation, it has to be said that first blood went to Gladstone. Talk of the Town - Northampton

For this special Halloween episode Gareth and Lisa share some spooky local stories and discuss what scares them before heading to Northampton and County Club to meet local historian Enid Jarvis. Enid takes our hosts on a tour of the vaults beneath the building and talks them through rumours of hauntings and the presence of ghosts... thankfully friendly ones!Back in the studio Gareth and Lisa are joined by professional photographer Corinne Gretton-West who (quite literally) moonlights as a paranormal investigator and spirit photograph analyst. Corinne gives an insight into investigating reputedly haunted places, detailing how such investigations are carried out, whilst also explaining her transition from sceptic to believer. Listen out for a strangely scary answer to one of our five questions!Lisa then meets Council Sergeant, Roger Coleman at the County Hall to talk gruesome histories, including the hanging of witches and a fascinating story about courtroom judgements based on a 'devil's tongue'.Finally our hosts meet ghost walker in chief, James Smith, of The Looking Glass Theatre. James gives a comprehensive account of some of the town's most ghostly tales in a fitting finale to this Halloween 'spooktacular'.

On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, our guests are Chris Skabo (Director of Athletics and Healthful Living, Wilkes County Schools), Mark Byrd (Superintendent of Wilkes County Schools), Dennis Huggins (Director of Development for Wilkes County Schools), and Marty Hemric (Wilkes County Hall of Fame President). They joined us to talk about the Wilkes County Hall of Fame, which they all played an integral part in creating in 2012. The Wilkes County Hall of Fame’s goal is to recognize the human capital of Wilkes County and remind the citizens of the stories and excellence of the individuals’ lives, inspiring students to pursue their goals by being encouraged by the accomplishments of those before them. In the past 6 years, 48 individuals have been inducted into the Wilkes County Hall of Fame in 4 categories: Leadership, Enterprise, Athletics/Sports, Performing and Cultural Arts. The inductees go through a nomination process and then are assessed by the Hall of Fame Board members before being chosen out of the dozens of applications received every year. Those involved with the Wilkes County Hall of Fame have found that an extraordinary number of the inductees have maintained connections in the area, which could be attributed to the entrepreneurial spirit, drive, and inspiration that were instilled in them in their formative years by living in the cohesive community of Wilkes County. Another commonality between the inductees is their focus on doing good for the sole purpose of doing good, not for the recognition or to receive any benefits from it. In addition to recognizing these individuals for their contributions to society, the Wilkes County Hall of Fame foundation manages a grant program for Wilkes County teachers and athletics personnel to improve the student experience and further push them to achieve greatness. In fact, on November 5th of this year, they will be holding the Youth Leadership Forum breakfast to inform student leaders about the accomplishments of the Wilkes County Hall of Fame inductees and provide them with the firepower to inspire their peers at school as well.   For more information: https://wilkescountyhalloffame.org/ https://www.facebook.com/wilkescountyhalloffame

She gets some tips on public speaking from her mate Pete Jenkins who is Chairman of GamFed and get's flown all over the world to speak on Gamification. What I'm gonna cover today is how to be very confident speaking live on camera. Someone in the audience has just pointed out that in fact I am not live and that is correct. Because it's much better if you record things in advance, properly. So, I'm actually just going to do a live demonstration. I'm showing people how to create a bit of content that can then go everywhere online in under 10 minutes a week. (video reel sharing highlights from UK ICF) So, as you can see we're out here in the sunshine and we're having lunch. I'm having lunch today with one of my very good friends, Pete Jenkins, who is a gamification expert. He's got his own company called GamificationPlus. And, interestingly, I ended up on stage yesterday with someone who knew Pete and his colleague Vacilis. Which was a real coincidence, it was really very strange. But it's auspicious I'm having lunch with Pete today. So, I thought It'd be really cool if I asked Pete to tell you as he does travel the world speaking live about all sorts of topics, but mainly gamification. Then he's going to give you his top three tips for making speaking live more fun, more enjoyable, and easier to do. So, I'm going to turn the camera around and ask Pete right now for his tips. Tell us where you've been recently speaking, and where you're off to. Pete - Oh let's see, three days ago, four days ago, I was in Canada, in Toronto, speaking at a serious games conference on the topic of big data and gamification. The week before that I was Mumbai, in India. My next trip, I think you asked me, is Romania. Nicola - Wow, cool. Pete - So, I do travel around a bit. Nicola - Yeah, absolutely. And what makes it easier for you, what tips would you share with my viewers? Pete - Well I'm still the sort of person who gets really nervous before going up and speaking. But I do find that one tip, which I read somewhere, it really works for me, which is just before you're going out is tell yourself you're really excited about the opportunity, not nervous. And it just, the newer science is good, it tells you that you're actually, all those symptoms of nerves are actually more about excitement. Nicola - Oh yeah, I came across that one recently and it really works, yeah. Pete - I did used to do that whole breathing, and stretching, and power posing and stuff. But quite often you're in the audience, in the front row, or whatever, and you're about to be called onstage and that can be quite disconcerting to anyone else who's speaking. So, I wouldn't always recommend that. So, you can't rely on that in a pinch. Nicola - Do you do any visualization techniques of any kind? Pete - No, I don't actually. Nicola - Oh. Pete - But one thing I actually would recommend is I like to practice my talks as much as...

Roman London was founded on the banks of the Thames to take advantage of the tidal river for traffic trade and communications. But precisely where were the bridge and the harbour, and what did they look like? The remains of Roman vessels had been found at County Hall, in Southwark and at Blackfriars, but no sign of the port itself. Then, from 1973 onwards, in a long series of major archaeological excavations within the City, the ancient harbour was gradually revealed, often where it was least expected. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/discovering-the-port-of-roman-londonGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. How can an 18th Century cartoonist be the inspiration for modern day mixology? Sam Mitchell has found a way and lucky for us we get to sample his artistic creations? James Gillray might not be as well known as his fellow 18thC cartoonist Hogarth, but does William have one of the great Gin Bars in London bearing his name? I think not. Gillray was known as "the father of the political cartoon" for poking fun at the mad King George III and others in his wake. Hogarth and he reigned supreme with their humorous, witty and biting caricatures. Now, as in the 17th C, the spirit known as Mother's Ruin is also reigning supreme in the city of its birth. Sam Mitchell who helms Gillray’s Bar at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall joins us today on the show to explain his take on this craze. He talks, among other things, about how he draws inspiration from the artist's work in creating the exciting menu. It adds to the enjoyment, but is not essential, to come along already versed in Gillray's work.
