Tuam has become the first town in County Galway to establish a €75 fine for drinking alcohol in public. Galway County Councillor Sean Cunniffe first brought the proposal in October 2024. Following public consultation, the Community Safety Partnership drafted the by-law and presented its report to councillors at a recent district meeting. The fine, which can be enforced by a community warden or An Garda Síochána, starts at €75 and must be paid within 21 days. Failure to do so will see the penalty increase to €150. If it remains unpaid, a person could ultimately be liable for a fine of up to €1,900.

The small Irish town of Tuam is home to one of Ireland's most shocking secrets. During the 20th century, thousands of children born out of wedlock were taken from their mothers, branded the 'children of sin' and sent to institutions run by nuns. At St Mary's, it's claimed 800 died of preventable causes, their remains discarded. Now, following a decade-long campaign for justice, an excavation has begun. Will it finally uncover the truth? I'm going to be a voice for these childrenChris Page, the BBC's Ireland correspondent speaks to the Irish historian Catherine Corless, who has changed history in her own country. When she began to research a long-closed mother and baby home near where she lived, she encountered local resistance. But her dogged investigation led to the discovery that hundreds of babies and young children were buried in mass, unmarked graves inside a disused sewage tank at the site in Tuam, Ireland. Her work led to the discovery of the scandal of Ireland's historical mother and baby institutions, which housed unmarried mothers and their babies at a time when they were ostracized by Irish society and often their families too. An inquiry launched by the Irish government into the network of homes concluded about nine thousand children died in the eighteen homes investigated. The revelation led to apologies from the Catholic Church in Ireland, the Irish Government, the council which owned the home in Tuam and the religious order which ran the home. The order has also contributed millions of dollars to a compensation scheme, and to the excavation now underway in Tuam.Thank you to Chris Page and Chrissie McGlinchey from the BBC's Ireland bureau for their help in making this programme. Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”The question haunts us all: Why do we suffer? And more importantly, does our suffering have meaning? In this profound conversation with Dr. Aaron Kheriaty—psychiatrist, author, and courageous voice during recent cultural upheavals—we explore the Christian understanding of suffering that offers liberation rather than mere explanation.Join Jack Rigert and Dr. Aaron Kheriaty as they explore the profound themes of suffering, faith, and the significance of the cross in Christianity. They discuss how suffering is an inherent part of the human experience and how it can lead to deeper spiritual understanding and connection with Christ. Dr. Kheriaty emphasizes the importance of prayer, particularly the simple prayer "Doce me passionem Tuam"—teach me your suffering. This brief aspiration, when repeated throughout our days of struggle, shifts our focus from demanding explanations to entering more deeply into Christ's redemptive love. The conversation also highlights the role of the Mass as a central aspect of Christian life, where believers can encounter the sacrifice of Christ and find healing and joy in their own suffering. For anyone struggling with physical pain, psychological anguish, or spiritual questioning, this conversation offers not easy answers but something better—a way forward that acknowledges suffering's reality while discovering its redemptive potential.
