It’s simply not true that every property makes money. In fact, in the last quarter of 2024, 5.2% of sellers sold for less than they paid, and in one segment, a staggering 36.7% sold at a loss. In this episode, we unpack the data from the latest CoreLogic Pain and Gain Report and walk you through which types of properties are proving to be the riskiest, especially for first home buyers. We talk about the dangers of short hold periods, why holding onto a property for longer (ideally around that 10-year mark) gives you a much better chance of riding out market dips, and how certain areas, like Melbourne Inner, Parramatta, and Ryde, are seeing rising rates of loss-making sales. Spoiler alert: units, particularly off-the-plan ones, are a major culprit here. We also get into the psychology of selling; why people are often forced to sell too early due to life changes, fear, or financial pressure, and how that can lead to big losses, especially in oversupplied markets. And yes, we even touch on why buying brand new with government grants might not be as clever as it sounds. It’s a classic case of good marketing, poor outcomes. Our goal is to help you avoid being one of those awful statistics. We’ve seen it too many times, first home buyers who do all the right things, and still end up worse off because they didn’t have access to the right information. So if you’re serious about making smart decisions, this one’s for you. (AURN News) — New data from the University of Michigan shows continued trouble for the U.S. economy, as consumer sentiment dropped 11% since March and more than 40% since December. No generation or demographic was unscathed by the decline, which reflects deepening concern over business conditions, inflation, and the labor market. “Consumers report multiple warning signs that raise the risk of recession: expectations for business conditions, personal finances, incomes, inflation, and labor markets all continued to deteriorate this month. The share of consumers expecting unemployment to rise in the year ahead increased for the fifth consecutive month and is now more than double the November 2024 reading and the highest since 2009,” the University said. Inflation expectations for the year ahead rose from 5% in March to 6.7% this month, as Americans continue to worry about the high cost of living they've been burdened with. The latest report comes as President Donald Trump's second term continues on an economic roller coaster, marked by tariff wars and elevated inflation. Learn more about your ad choices. If you care about decarbonizing the power grid anytime soon, you have to care about data centers. The AI boom and the ongoing growth of the internet have driven a big new cycle of data center construction in the United States, with tech companies trying to buy amounts of electricity comparable to those used by large cities. Peter Freed has seen this up close. As Meta's former director of energy strategy, he worked on clean energy procurement and data center development from 2014 to 2024. He is now a founding partner at the Near Horizon Group, where he advises investors and companies on emerging topics in data centers and advanced clean energy. On this week's episode of Shift Key, Rob and Jesse talk with Peter about whether AI and new data centers are going to blow up the grid and break decarbonization. What are the real-world constraints on developing a data center in 2025? Are tech companies beginning to run out of natural gas to burn? What do their investments in clean energy mean? And could the rise of AI prompt an accidental return to coal? Welcome back to Intellicast! Joining Brian Peterson on this jam-packed episode is Gabby Blados. They talk about conferences, data quality, as well as discuss some recent headlines from around the research world. Kicking off the episode, Brian and Gabby talk about the upcoming conferences, including SampleCon and Quirks Chicago. With Gabby attending Quirks, she gives Brian a preview of some of the topics, sessions, and activities she most looks forward to while in Chicago in early April. Next, Brian and Gabby turn their sights to the latest market research news, starting with the launch of the Global Data Quality Initiative updated Data Quality Pledge. Brian and Gabby discuss how they feel this is a step in the right direction to improve overall data quality. They are hesitant, though, since it is a pledge, and there is no one to hold people accountable to its standard other than self-regulation. They both agree that the pledge is probably a step toward some sort of regulation around data quality. In the second data quality story, they discuss the results and key takeaways from the new Data Quality Benchmarking Study released by the Insight Association. Brian and Gabby discuss some of the stats, including some that were somewhat surprising to both of them. You can get your free copy of the Insights Association Data Quality Benchmarking Report here. Next, Brian and Gabby talk about some of the recent headlines from around the market research industry, including ComScore's 2024 results, Glimpse's rebrand to Panoplai, and Disney shutting down FiveThirtyEight. In our final story, they touch on the reports about Kantar potentially looking to sell their Worldpanel/Numerator division. Thanks for listening! “Unheralded cardiac arrest among previously healthy young people without antecedent illness, months or years after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination, highlights the urgent need for risk stratification,” Dr. Peter McCullough and Nicolas Hulscher say in recently-published medical paper. “The numerous studies highlighting serious cardiovascular safety concerns related to COVID-19 vaccines have raised public and physician awareness,” they concluded, warning that physicians should have a “pre-established approach” for handling patients with these side effects.
